‘Senseless’ killing in store REYANA STEYN

P

OLICE are dispelling fears that a murderous syndicate is targeting business owners in Athlone following the killing of a well-known business owner. Other shopkeepers and their workers are terrified that they may be next. Abdullah Daware (62) died at his Surrey Estate business – Dicky’s Meat Market – on Monday 14 March. Four men have been arrested for the murder and are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court today (Tuesday). “The killing happened just before the store closed at 19:55,” says Warrant Officer Llewelyn Lakay, Manenberg police spokesperson. Ganief Daware, Abdullah’s brother, who was inside the store when the murder took place, explains: “It was my brother, a staff member and myself in the store. Three men dressed in blue overalls entered. Two entered the store and one kept watch at the door. “I remember noticing the overalls because they were brand new and I still thought to myself they must be working for a new company. “I was about to cash up at the time. The one walked down the aisle to the staff member and the other was walking to me.” Ganief says the staff member then screamed when one of the men pointed a gun at her. “She screamed ‘Ganief, look here!’ I was about to walk to her and Abdullah, who was about two metres away, also went to her and then the man who was closest to us shot him point blank. “They took a shot at me and I ducked to the ground and they then ran off. They shot at me again, which missed me.

“It happened so fast. I went to get my gun out of the safe and I wanted to chase after them, but they were gone by the time I got outside. I ran and called the police, but I went blank and couldn’t even remember the number.” Lakay says Abdullah was hit four times in his chest, once in his right side and once in his hand. “The men then sped off in a Maroon VW Golf 5.” Ganief says that what happened still seems surreal. “I wasn’t thinking when it happened and it still hasn’t sunk in. It’s as if he went away, but he will be coming back. What was strange is I kept telling him to go home as he broke his wrist and I told him he shouldn’t be at work, but he refused.” Ganief says his late brother was a father figure to him. “He was the one who reared me from a young age and he was loved by everyone.” Abdullah was buried on Tuesday 15 March according to Muslim tradition. Lakay says two suspects were arrested at a house in Tarentaal Road, Athlone. “Police followed information which was given to them and arrested the suspects on Wednesday. On Thursday, another two men from Mitchell’s Plain handed themselves in at the police station in connection with the murder.” The news of his death still has to be told to his 32-year-old son, who is in hospital since he was in a car accident in Calvinia in January. “The two cousins were in a car accident and one died,” says Ganief. “Abdullah’s son has been in hospital with multiple injuries and to this day he doesn’t even know that his cousin died and now we still have to tell him that his father died too,” says Ganief. Abdullah leaves behind his wife,

Photo: Reyana Steyn Khadija, four children and five grandchildren. Surrounding businesses are concerned as they say there has been a spate of robberies and this is the second “senseless” killing of a business owner. People’s Post previously reported that Sedick Venos, the owner of Crescent Crete Precast Walls on Carbon Road, Athlone Industria, was brutally slain for no apparent reason. The 51-year-old’s body was found by a co-worker at his business on Saturday 11 December 2010. He had been viciously bludgeoned and stabbed to death (“Family mourns after murder”, 14 December 2010). Chantal Muller, who works for Dr MS Hayat Surgery, next to Dicky’s Meat Market, says all the workers are terrified of what else could happen. “We are so scared after the murder of Abdullah. It was a pointless killing. We come to work and we’re terrified because we don’t know if a car can pull up and anyone can be targeted.

“For the past couple of weeks we have had men come into the surgery and ask if they could use the bathroom, but when we tell them no, they get aggressive and we can see they’re scouting the place. “Abdullah was such a good person, always friendly and cracking jokes. Since he’s been gone the atmosphere has been different.” Abe Parker, the owner of Gas and Motor Centre, also situated in Surrey Estate, says he is becoming immune to the robberies taking place. “There have been many robberies in the shopping complex, but one becomes immune to it, even murders – it’s an every day thing. We have lost hope in the police; we want to believe them, but then we see how cases just get thrown out of court. “It is sad about Abdullah. I have known him for more than 30 years. He was a superb, admirable guy. Always friendly and helpful even with small things – a real family figure and very well known. It’s traumatic that he was killed.”

Mariam Mtwisha, who works at Primrose Supermarket, says she fears coming to work. “We are so scared because it’s not safe here. This shop has been robbed numerous times, but no one was hurt. It is scary what happened to Mr Daware.” Lakay says police are on high alert and dismisses claims by business owners that there is a syndicate doing the rounds. “We are investigating the murder and following all leads. No money was taken when the men entered the shop. The motive at this stage is unclear. We understand the business owners' fears, but other robberies have not been reported.” Lakay urges the community to come forward if they have any information regarding the shooting. “All information will be handled confidentially and the residents can remain anonymous.” Anyone with information is urged to call the investigating officer, Sergeant Victor Tyobeka, on 082 559 4713.

Fire destroys Athlone home REYANA STEYN

A

N Athlone family has been left destitute after their home caught fire and they lost everything. But on Friday, community workers, organisations and the Athlone subcouncil chairperson donated blankets and food to the family. The fire was caused at the Lawrence Road home after a pot of food was left on the stove. “It happened on Tuesday in the afternoon,” says Louise Maarman, owner of the house. “I was visiting neighbours when I got a phone call to say that my house is burning. I didn’t want to believe it and then I went outside and saw the smoke coming from the house. “A neighbour pulled up with a car as I was running to the house and said I must get in.” She says when she got to her home she couldn’t believe what was happening. “I got there and I saw the house burning. There was nothing we could do as the entire

house was burning within minutes. There was no time to save anything. “There were nine people living inside the house. When I got there I was told that the fire began after one of the tenants put on a pot of food and then stepped outside into the yard.” She says they don’t know what to do now. “We have lost everything. I am so glad that no one was injured during the fire, but right now we have nothing. I am staying at my mother in Athlone and the other residents are also staying at family and neighbours, but we will have to start from scratch.” The family lost almost everything – furniture, microwaves, fridge, beds, clothes, TVs, computers, school books and uniforms. They managed to save one bed and one chest of drawers “It will be a struggle, but I pray that we will pull through; right now we just don’t know where to start,” says Maarman. Bradley Booysen, who also lived in the house, says; “It’s sad to think that the house was burnt out due to negligence. The house isn’t insured and now it’s a problem we are sitting with. “I am sleeping in a car right now and people have been helpful, which we are very thankful for, but we are disappointed in councillor Suzette

Little. She promised us that she would come back and provide us with tents that we could set up, but she never got back to us.” Councillor Little says there was no promise made. “On the night of the fire, we donated blankets, took their measurements for clothing and donated food. “I said to them that I would look into getting tents after I was asked, but when that was not possible, I got them fire kits so they could rebuild their structure. I did a lot for them and I am disappointed that they feel that I did nothing.” Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone police spokesperson, warns people to be careful as fires start quickly. “These people lost everything, but luckily their lives were not claimed. They should try and not be negligent.” Zelda Hintsa and Esme Daniels, community workers, say people came together and made sure the family is okay. “We went and asked people if they would be able to assist and they did – Mustadafin and the South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF) donated food to the people, and Cynthia Clayton, chairperson of the Athlone subcouncil, also donated blankets to the family. Thank you to all the people, who assisted this family so far.” Booysen also thanks everybody for their help. . Blankets were also donated to the fire victims of the Kewtown flats. People’s Post reported last week that a fire broke out at the flats and a woman died due to smoke inhalation (“Fire kills woman, families left destitute,” 15 March). . If anyone wants to assist the family with anything, they can call The leftovers of the house in Lawrence Road. Booysen on 072 192 5683.

Still a long walk to freedom HUMAN rights day is celebrated annually on 21 March in South Africa. On this day in 1960 police killed 69 people demonstrating against the pass laws in Sharpeville. When apartheid ended and the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela came into power in 1994, the national holidays were changed to days that would be meaningful to all South Africans. Human Rights Day was created to ensure that the people of South Africa are aware of their human rights and to ensure that such abuses came to an end. People’s Post took to the streets and asked residents what they thought of the day.

Rudy and Desiree Anthony say equal rights are being observed selectively. “Everyone is aware of their rights, which is good, but in some instances they are being abused,” says Rudy. “Chil dren’s rights are very important, yet children abuse them. Some feel that they are adults and don’t have to adhere to the rules of their parents. That is something that is not on.” Photos: Reyana Steyn Shihaam Salie says although Human Rights Day is celebrated, people are still not standing together. “We must all stand together. We are living in a country where our human rights are of vital importance, yet you still find peo ple putting each other down. Commu nities are torn apart and they don’t re spect each other. It’s the little things like keeping the com munity clean which will keep people together.” Richard Rodwell feels “human rights have been dumped into the dirtbin”. “In a country that is supposed to be a democracy, it’s unfortunate, but we still find that only certain people are being treated fairly. Apartheid may be over, but it seems as if history is re peating itself. Only the roles have been reversed with who is being treat ed fairly.” Maggie Ward says not everyone’s hu man rights are being observed. “It’s sad to say, but affirmative action is just a pretty word for apartheid and it is still continuing. I have been bat tling to get work and I was told that it is because of my colour and age that I can’t get a job. Human rights are suppose to be for everyone, yet the wool is just being pulled over our eyes. We are told we are the rainbow nation, but then why is eve ryone still not being treated fairly? Igsaan Abdurahman and Sharief Salie says not everyone’s rights are equal. “The march in Sharpe ville was for the rights of all peo ple, yet many years later, it is still not being practised. Peo ple’s rights are still being abused every day. People have to sit long hours at day hospitals and not get the service they de serve,” says Abdurahman. Salie agrees and says even some police are corrupt. “They are supposed to implement the law, yet many are with the criminals and people’s rights are not being practised. This needs to change and people need to stand up for what they believe and what is right – so that all the proper procedures are followed and people are aware of their rights.”

Hilda’s Place forfeited to the State REYANA STEYN

T

HE infamous Hilda’s Place shebeen in Birdwood Street, Athlone, has been forfeited to the State and the house is scheduled to go on auction soon. This was decided in the Cape High Court on Thursday after Hilda and Edward van der Burg appealed the decision to have the house forfeited in 2008. The couple lost their appeal to keep their home after the High Court ruled that they had used the property illegally for the past six years. People’s Post previously reported on the numerous raids on and investigations into the shebeen, which has been operating since 2001. Finally, on Monday 22 December 2008, the Cape High Court ruled that the house be handed over to the State

(“Hilda’s Place finally forfeited to the state”, People’s Post, 13 January, 2009) Hilda’s Place made headlines after a woman, Anne Bee, who was the Van der Burg’s domestic worker, was found bleeding on the floor of the house in 2006, allegedly after being accused of stealing money. Bee died. Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone police spokesperson, says police will continue to take action where illegal activity is taking place. “Hilda’s Place has been searched numerous times and has been served several notices to stop, but they refused. The community also signed several petitions because of the menace the shebeen was causing in the area. There were also several criminal activities which took place there. Police then made an application to have the house forfeited to the state.” Bennett says: “If people don’t want to

A COLLEGE student died after he was hit by an oncoming train on Thursday in Heideveld. “The 20-year-old man, who was on his way to the Cape Town College in Crawford, took a shortcut and crossed the railway track,” says Warrant Officer Llewelyn Lakay, Manenberg police spokesperson. “According to witnesses, the young man had his earphones on and could not hear their screams of warnings to him as the train approached.” The driver of the train that was travelling from Cape Town

A BOKMAKIERIE man appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 15 March for possession of drugs. “Police officers executed a search warrant in Bokmakierie at a known drug outlet,” says Warrant Officer Ian Bennett. “The house was searched on Saturday 12 March and 11 packets of tik to the value of R1 000 were confiscated.” The 27-year-old was released on R500 bail and will appear in court again on Wednesday 29 June. “Police will continue to conduct this type of operation to reduce the drug trade that has an effect on all other crimes within the area,” says Bennett. “Police will encourage more community members to become involved to identify problematic areas.”

We will not hesitate to make an application to forfeit the house, should the illegal activity continue.” Suzette Little, councillor of the area, says it is about time that action has been taken. “I am aware that the house has been forfeited to the State and I hope that this court order serves as an eye opener to the rest of the community that they too could lose their home if they are involved with wrong activities.” Taki Amira, the chairperson of the Liquor Policy Task Team, says the forfeiture of the house shows that the problem of shebeens has been coming on for a long time. “This is a case which has been going on since 2008 and it shows that communities are fed up with liquor selling in the areas. I welcome any help that will help alleviate the alcohol and drug problem.”

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into a fire which destroyed a car parked in a Crawford streetlast Tuesday. The silver Audi A3 was burnt beyond recognition after the owner parked the car in Haywood Road and left for Worcester with his ex-wife. By the time the owner arrived, the car had already been destroyed.” “An investigation is under way to determine whether the fire was caused by an electrical fault or if it was arson. The Dire Department is also investigating the matter,” Lakey confirms. Anyone with information on the origin of the fire is asked to phone the station on (021) 700-9000.

New look for Athlone cash office TAMMY PETERSEN

T

IRED of shouting your personal information and financial status to tellers who can barely hear you through the thick glass panels? This may soon be over as the City of Cape Town will be rolling out a new look to its cash offices. At a subcouncil meeting at the Athlone civic centre on Thursday, ward councillors and representatives raised their “absolute concern” about the current system, which sees locals communicating through plate glass. William Swartbooi, a senior professional officer from the City’s revenue department, says the new system will be rolled out at the Cape Town cash office within the next two weeks. The new-look office will boast interview cubicles to promote privacy and has also been made wheelchair-friendly. Swartbooi adds that once it has been budgeted for as structural change, it will be rolled out to the rest of the City’s cash offices. A satisfied Cynthia Clayton, chairperson of the subcouncil, says she is glad that something will be done to address the matter. “If someone comes forward to discuss their arrears or inquire about water cuts, you must have privacy. I would never want to come to a place where I am asked personal questions and I have to respond so loudly that everyone in the office can hear,” she says. Ward 48 councillor Mustapha Murudker stresses that all people should enjoy privacy when discussing confidential

matters. “The tellers also have to have an attitude change. The manner in which you relay information also affects the experience of the person. This really is a matter of great concern.” Ward 49 councillor Suzette Little says she too is aware of the “attitude problem” of certain employees. “I have sent in complaints in the past about unpleasant staff. What if they should be in that position? How would they feel?” Swartbooi says the matter will be addressed by sending tellers for training to make them “more effective”. Hanover Park resident, Mymoenisa Jawaar, says she is “relieved” that her personal financial matters won’t be heard by strangers any more. “I always dreaded going to the cash office because you have to scream through that glass plate for the teller to hear you. It was very embarrassing. When this new system is introduced, I will have no problem with reporting my situation any more. It will be between me and the employee.” Athlone resident Simeon Duminy says he never enjoyed visiting the cash office because he felt like “a naughty child in the principal’s office”. “The staff must learn manners, man. They speak to you like you are rubbish just because you don’t have the money to keep up with payments. “When you go to the office for help, you are treated like a poor gemors. They must employ people with proper communication skills and who know how to deal with people in a decent way.”

HUMAN RIGHTS CELEBRATION: A Human Rights Day rally was held at Athlone Stadium yesterday (Mon day) with President Jacob Zuma as well as a number of min isters and dele gates delivering speeches. How ever, when Acting Premier of the Western Cape Pa tricia de Lille stepped up to ad dress the crowd, she was booed. Var ious attempts by programme director, Marius Fransman, and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Jeff Radebe, to silence the crowd fell on deaf ears. De Lille continued with her address until the booing died down. Here Zuma signing the Human Rights Pledge. Photo: Edrea Du Toit

Joan Cupido, the psychiatric sister at the Heideveld Day Hospital, was found in her flat in Rondebosch Close after her sister had not heard from her for two days. Her sister, Madelein, says she spoke to Joan for the last time on Saturday. “Even prior to my call, she told me that she had a stomach ailment. She had been booked off from work and had been at home for a couple of days,” the devastated woman says. Madelien says she worried after her calls and SMSes to Joan went unanswered on Sunday and Monday. “I went to her place on Tuesday evening after work. "When I got there, the door was open

NURSE, well-known for her many years of service to the Heideveld community, was found dead in her Rondebosch East flat on Wednesday, apparently two days after complaining of ill health.

but the security gate was locked. "I called but she didn’t answer,” she explains. She then phoned the police because she had a “bad feeling”. Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesperson for Lansdowne police, says officers forced open the security gate and found Joan lying on her back on her bed with her hands folded across her chest. The bed was scattered with water bottles. “It seems she was trying to stay hydrated and fell asleep,” Lakey says. A post mortem is being conducted to confirm the cause of death and an inquest docket has been opened, he adds. Madelien says she shared a “very close bond” with her 58-year-old sister, who always enjoyed good health. “I’m very sad,” she says. “She was a good person and was loved in the community in which she worked. She helped a lot of people.” The date for her funeral has not yet been confirmed.

Choirs ready for final battle TAURIQ HASSEN

T

HE time has come to separate the boys from the men, as the Cape Male Choir Board (CMCB) has reached the grand final stage of the Malay choir competitions. Six teams will be battling it out for the prestigious title of best choir when they take part in the very first Keep The Dream Champions Cup on Sunday 27 March. Jordan Sporting Club from Manenberg, Silver Sounds Singkoor from Athlone, Ken/Fac Singkoor from Kensington and Factreton, and Capetonians Singkoor have all qualified for the final round of the competition. On Friday 11 March, Playboys Singkoor from Silvertown and Hamediahs Singkoor from Mitchell’s Plain qualified for the Champions Cup, after competing in the Challenge Cup. This part of the competition gave two teams an opportunity to sing their hearts out for a place in the grand final. Ebrahim Hull, president of the CMCB, was delighted at the outcome of the organ-

isation’s first year in existence and said: “It all went very well and the launch has been successful, but it’s not over, because the grand final is promising to be even more spectacular.” The board is integrated with the Keep The Dream Malay Choir Forum, which assists struggling choirs in finding their feet to perform on the big stage. The forum was established last year. “The standard of our first event has been really good and the top six teams have really produced quality entertainment for the crowds, which promises to follow through to the final,” says Hull. The Keep The Dream Champions Cup takes place at the Athlone Civic Centre on Sunday 27 March, with only 150 tickets still available at the door. Tickets can also be purchased from the respective choirs at R35 for adults, R20 for children and R25 for pensioners. Hull said the crowd is encouraged to hold on to their tickets, as attendees stand a chance to win a plasma screen television. For any further information or tickets call Hull on 073 651 9989.

Join the navy for a day THE South African Navy is promising a bigger and better Navy Festival in Simon’s Town from 1 to 3 April. The navy will once again open its doors for civilians to explore naval culture at the East Dockyard in Simon’s Town. Last year over 120 000 people visited the base. The family festival coincides with the navy’s 89th birthday celebration – the SA Navy was established on April 1 1922 – and henceforth the festival will be called the SA Navy Birthday Festival. Entrance to the festival is free and gates

will open daily at 10:00 and close at 18:00. There will be various events in the main arena and the dockyard that both young and old will find entertaining. The programme of events includes: Ships and submarines open to the public; tug boat rides; a flea market; a Navy Band performance; a fire fighting display competition; a dog display by the navy’s Dog Unit; the Izivunguvungu Youth Band; and live canon firing. For further inquiries call Sub-Lieutenant Leverne Benjamin on (021) 787-4620.

SA belongs to all of us

People’s Post Athlone Page 11

Your SMSes

IT is a sad indictment on our beloved country when on Human Rights Day, a speaker at the national celebration is shouted down by those who may not agree with the speaker’s political affiliation. Even before the Acting Premier of the host province could make any remark, people in the audience waving the flag of a particular political party shouted her down. This says so much about where we are as a country. It is clear that we are a deeply divided nation. We have not yet progressed beyond our black-white politics. Sadly we have not yet moved towards becoming a nation united around common principles irrespective of our political or economic perspectives. The behaviour of a huge section of the Athlone Stadium crowd will be to our shame as a nation. What does that say about our respect for human rights? Are we so divided that just because the highest office in a province is not held by one from my party, that I will show disrespect to that office? And the respect given to the deputy minister, who happens to be white, was in such sharp contrast to the disrespect shown to the Acting Premier of the Western Cape. What was the difference? It was not the colour of the skin so it must have been the intolerance towards those who hold a different political perspective. Our national celebration days should unite us. Yet we have seen over the years how this country failed to use our national days as opportunities to unite the nation. Why are these days turned into party-political rallying events? Should we not unite around the events organised by our govern-

ment? Why are political parties holding rallies on these days? More should be done by our government to ensure fuller participation by all political parties and leadership in the national events. Our people will see the example. They will follow. There should be no separate party-political rallies on our national days. And while opposition groups would want to complain about the lack of inclusion, they should accept that by organising their own rallies, they are becoming instruments of division. What was remarkable, though, was the recognition given to Robert Sobukwe and the leadership of his party in the events that are being commemorated in the current human rights celebration. Nation building begins by recognising that our freedom was not brought to us by one party but by a wide range of freedom fighters. That battle was fought on many fronts and it is time South Africa gives due recognition to those stalwarts. Nation building really begins when we start recognising the role played by the first nation, the Khoi people, in the fight against settlers who sought to dehumanise them and take their land. When we move from the fallacy that we are beholden to one party or a particular group only for the freedom we enjoy today, then we would have advanced on the road to building a true united South Africa. Human Rights Day should move us to do more to unite as a nation. PHILIP M. BAM Grassy Park

. Pagad will never have my respect for what they did to Rashaad Staggie all those years ago. Although he was a drug merchant, nobody deserves to die that way. I remember how members of Pagad bombed a residence in my area and a lot of people were traumatised. Pagad has always been a vigilante group and they won’t stop. People are desperate enough to call on them in a crisis. Pagad thinks they are doing the right thing by intimidating people. The only way the merchants would stop selling drugs is if they suddenly get a conscience, and not by pressure. They caused damage to properties in the surrounding area yet the guy selling drugs just kept on doing so. So what was the point of that effort in their bombing campaign? The only way you are going to get drug merchants to stop is for them to serve jail time, and that is in the hands of the police. Damocles . They must really do something to these officers who just want to hit people and push them around ["Man claims police 'torture'", article, People's Post 15 March]. They don’t have the right to do it. . I have just read the article of the maternity facility in Rondebosch East and I am so happy that there is a home like this. I had three babies and all of my experiences were horrific. In the government hospitals it’s just a job and at a time like this you need some special care, not the red carpet but nurses who can bear with you and speak in a sweet and loving voice. Not all of us have medical aid. Luckily my last baby was on medical aid. She was premature – I don’t even want to think of what it would have been like had I gone the government way again. They need to get their act together. I hope the new maternity home won’t lose sight of the purpose and accept all religions, not only Muslims. Thanks and good luck. . Well thought-out poem, Pierrene Ma-

lander ("We deserve a better future", letters, People's Post 15 March). You’re very special. Lovely syntax too. Send it to “Showerhead”. The likes of Zuma probably won’t understand it. LS, Lansdowne . To Metrorail and associates, I am very pleased about your new timetable. Before you start, please clean your filthy trains both inside and out, especially the windows. I can’t see through them during the day, what about at night? Disgusted commuter . I agree with Concerned Young Adult. I have been out of college for a year and I still don’t have a job for the field I studied in. Everyone says I don’t have experience but how will we gain experience if no one hires you without it? . We won’t employ Concerned Young Adult or her friends as we cannot fire her/ them if she/they are no good. . I rather buy Jive. It tastes far better than Stoney. I don’t buy Stoney any more. . I have experienced the same taste of Stoney as you have. Jive ginger beer is far better, and cheaper too. Thank you! . Thank you very much for the Mummenschanz tickets. It was an amazing experience. What a talented troupe. My sisterin-law and I had fun! Chantal Burricks, Manenberg . Heartfelt thanks to People’s Post, Kiwi and Toughees for the school shoes I won recently. They will be donated to a needy child. Vera Eksteen . Thank you People’s Post for the Jamali tickets I won! We had a wonderful time at Kirstenbosch. Tracy . Thanks so much for choosing me as your winner of the two tickets to the Riverdance show at Grand West on 24 February. It was awesome. People’s Post made my day on my 60th birthday. B. Watlington

Mugen teases with hot hybrid hatch

Speedway 10x8 22-03-11.cdr

MUGEN is developing a more potent version of Honda’s CR-Z sports hybrid with promises of Type Rlike performance. The CR-Z Mugen will see adjustments to both its regular 1.5-litre iVTEC petrol engine and Honda’s IMA hybrid system to boost the hatchback’s power and torque. Bespoke brakes and a revised suspension will be thrown into the deal. Furthermore, Mugen surmises that the enhancements made may

result in better fuel economy and cleaner emissions – in certain instances – but the tuner admitted that final performance figures were unavailable at this early stage of the car’s development. Lightness and aerodynamics are vital to the Mugen’s performance. A carbon-fibre bonnet and special Mugen alloy rims are just two of the light components employed. Improving aerodynamics, as well as giving the car its more as-

Reach for the mountain LUWANDA MXHOSANA, a second-year Bachelor of Business Administration student at the Tertiary School in Business Administration (TSiBA) in Cape Town, hopes to show other young people from the townships that their dreams are possible despite their background and circumstances. With fellow Khayelitsha-based TSiBA staff member, Loyiso Koyana, who teaches leadership and self-development and is himself a keen hiker and runner, they will demonstrate this by starting their climb on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania – the highest mountain in Africa. Motivated by TSiBA’s philosophy of “pay it forward”, Mxhosana and Koyana recently launched the “Dare To Dream” initiative and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro became a reality when they left this past Sunday. The enterprising duo will be raising funds on their return to show that making a dream a reality is possible. With the assistance of Old Mutual, they will present motivational talks and films to schools and the public. Through these presentations they will raise funds that will be used to improve education opportunities for township youth. CHILDREN today are rapidly outstripping their parents in Internet savvy and use. Older generations are increasingly being left behind. Sam Paddock, co-author of the new University of Cape Town Internet Super-User course, believes parents have a responsibility towards their children to learn about the Internet. He says parents cannot help children understand the Internet or protect them from online threats if they haven’t educated themselves. Many web browsers have built-in tools that allow parents to select which websites their children may visit and which ones to automatically block.

programme for young students, their levels of success in education can be improved. They are being supported by the Western Cape Sports and Recreation Department, which is organising and facilitating sponsorships, British Airways, which is sponsoring the tickets and Old Mutual, which is paying the for the backpacks, water bottles and gaiters, head lamps, walking sticks, pay-as-yougo funeral cover and US$500. Mxhosana says: “For many young people who come from the townships, life is negative. Life is dominated by dark images of HIV and AIDS, crime, high unemployment rates and lack of proper educational infrastructure. “As a result of this, dreaming in the townships is considered a luxury and an increasing number of young people engage in antisocial activities that destroy the future of this country. “Without a dream to strive towards, what is the purpose of living?” He believes there is a dire need for young people to become good role models and inspire positive social change and he aims to be the change that he wants to see. If you would like to support this initiative, please contact Loyiso on (021) 532-2750, 073 744 3469 or email Ntombiza@tsiba.org.za. Parents who assist their children with their homework will also find that the Internet is an amazing tool. Web-savvy parents can help steer them towards good materials and sources, helping with the work at hand and exposing the children to subjects that interest them. Even children who consider books boring will happily spend hours online reading about their favourite topics. Paddock says GetSmarter “is making a broad range of technology skills available to the average person that will add value to their lives”. The part-time UCT Internet Super-User short course is presented online throughout South Africa and starts on Monday 11 April. For more information contact Abby on (021) 685-4775, email abby@getsmarter.co.za or visit www.getsmarter.co.za.

Open culinary concepts comprises a row of storage cupboards on the ground with a countertop above, and a row of storage cupboards that are installed above the countertop, with the workspace lying between the two rows of cupboards. The two-wall layout Much like its one-wall counterpart, the two-wall layout is best suited to a rectangular-shaped space, although it has to be considerably larger to accommodate the two rows of cupboards. It is common to have overcounter cupboards lining both walls, however, lighting can sometimes be an issue, and some of this storage might have to be negated to make space for a window or two. The L-shaped layout The L-shaped kitchen can usually accommodate more than one

ANTONELLA DESI

OPEN-PLAN living is the new buzz word when it comes to home layout. Planning workstations and traffic flow is a very important consideration when it comes to designing an efficient, functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchen. However, probably the most important factor is choosing the correct kitchen layout for your particular space. There are generally six main layout options that will suit most kitchens – they are: The one-wall layout Ideal for small rectangular spaces and for single homeowners or those who don’t cook or entertain too often, the one-wall layout

person, as it most commonly leaves a nicely proportioned amount of free space in the centre of the kitchen. Having the benches on adjacent, rather than parallel walls can save a tremendous amount of space. This layout is most commonly built into a corner, so it is essential to consider how to deal with the often awkward-to-reach issue of corner cupboards in order to maximize your culinary space. The U-shaped layout For larger, square-shaped spaces, the U-shape layout allows for maximum storage and workspace. However, since the cupboards and benches line three of the four walls, the floor area is reduced, especially when compared to its L-shaped counterpart. So, unless the space

is large enough to cope with the surrounding cupboards and benches, a U-shaped kitchen layout can sometimes feel a little cramped. For spaces that are just slightly too small for this layout, a clever design trick is to remove the cupboards from one wall and use it as a breakfast bench instead. The island layout Essentially, the island layout only really works for relatively large spaces. By definition, an island is a freestanding work area that can fit into any kitchen layout – it can either be fixed or mobile, and can serve a number of purposes, such as providing additional workspace or storage. If the island is fixed, it can host stovetops, electrical appliances, or

even a sink – making for a very practical and centrally located work area. The true open-plan layout This layout consists of a kitchen area with no defining spaces between it and the rest of the living area, most often the living/ dining room, and is best suited to really small living spaces. It usually comprises one wall of below- and above-counter cupboards, with all the appliances, such as the fridge, stove and dishwasher all positioned on the same wall. It is a highly effective layout, but can be problematic, as the kitchen will need to look clean at all times as it is completely in line of sight. – Property24.co.za

the first time in eight years will certainly put an extra spring in the team’s step for the rest of the Super Rugby competition. The men from the Cape, who are now the only unbeaten team in the coveted competition, managed to trump the Pretoria men 2313 in a tightly contested, physical encounter last Saturday evening. And to add to the notches on the Stormers’ belt – a try from recently under-performing speedster Bryan Habana. The try was only the team’s second for the season, after the one by flanker Pieter Louw in the team’s opening match of the competition against the Lions. And, despite only scoring the sole try, head coach Allister Coetzee was impressed with his team’s attack. “We created a lot of opportunities and we know that we need to keep improving. The attack displayed against the Bulls is definitely a step in the right direction,” he said. Discipline was another reason for the Stormers’ victory. The Bulls constantly transgressed, giving flyhalf Peter Grant opportunities to add to the Stormers’ tally. The visitors remained the more disciplined of the two sides, only conceding six attempts at goal. Grant managed to slot six of 10 attempts at goal, while the Bulls’ usually accurate Morné Steyn only managed to convert three of six attempts. The set pieces and the breakdown points were dominated by Coetzee’s chargers. “We always knew that we would have a challenge up front and there was certainly a physical intensity,” Coetzee said. “Although a battle, we managed to do well – we scrummed well and stole a couple of line-outs. The victory was a collective effort from the entire team. A lot of hard work went into the preparations for the Bulls match and the players accepted the challenge and stood up on the day.” But on Saturday the Stormers will face a team with a different style and approach to the game. They take on the Western Force from Australia who, despite being relatively inexperienced, always pose a threat on attack. After beating the Lions 27-15 at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon, Nathan Sharp and his men will believe that they are able to compete with the Stormers. An interesting battle between flyhalfs Grant and wunderkind James O’Connor is likely to ensue, while the experience of captain Sharpe and fullback Cameron Shepherd will assist their team in the challenge. The battle between blind-side flankers Pieter Louw and Richard Brown should interest rugby lovers as well.

Provincial baseball player poser BRIAN GAFFNEY

WESTERN Province baseball suffered a triple blow when three top ballers, including star pitcher Carl Michaels, withdrew from the WP A squad which will defend the national title at the inter-provincial tournament in George from 3 to 9 April. Michaels, who has spearheaded his club Athlone Athletics’ successful challenge for the WP Major League title, disclosed last week that he needs to take a break from the game to recover from the injuries he sustained this season. Bellville Tygers infielder Jonathan Phillips and Bothasig utility player Kyle Botha have also confirmed their unavailability. Neil Adonis, the head coach of the WP A side, said the replacements for Michaels, Phillips and Botha – drawn from the WP B squad – will be finalised by Wednesday. Westridge Yankees pitcher Jarred du Plessis and Tygers’ pitcher Ryan Groves are the current new caps in the WP A squad, while VOB catcher Konrad Weitz returns after a

four-year absence from the squad. WP softballers toppled WESTERN Province succumbed to new champions Gauteng North and Eastern Gauteng in the play-off phase yesterday at the national softball tournament in Tshwane. Province, after dominating the championship for several years, went down 7-5 to North Gauteng before losing 4-3 to Eastern Gauteng, with Northerns defeating their neighbours

10-2 in the final. Defending champions WP went through unbeaten in the round robin phase – beating Gauteng North 10-1. The WP men’s side did not qualify for the play-offs, after losing four and winning three matches. Clint Alfino won the best men’s batter award at the tournament

Dutch fasttracking Ajax ace T

HULANI SERERO is close to leaving Ajax Cape Town FC to pursue a professional soccer career with Ajax Amsterdam FC in the Netherlands. Serero’s move to the world-renowned Dutch club was confirmed by George Comitis, the CEO of Ajax Cape Town FC, over the weekend. “There is little doubt that Serero will soon be joining Ajax Amsterdam. He was invited to a trial so that they can further assesses his ability to withstand the pressure of European soccer,” said Comitis. The good news for Ajax fans is that Serero (21) will not be lost to the Urban Warriors until after the end of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) season. Serero and Sameehg Doutie were on trial at Ajax Amsterdam early last year on the recommendation of Hennie Spijkerman, a former technical director at Ajax Cape Town. Spijkerman is now the assistant-coach for Frank de Boer – the new head coach at Ajax Amsterdam. De Boer last week informed Ajax that he needs to have another look at Serero, who has shown excellent form for the title-chasers in the PSL this season. Ajax Cape Town FC, which is a satellite club of its Dutch namesakes, has since its founding in 1999 regularly concluded successful contracts for its star players with its

Dutch namesakes. Serero is set to follow in the footsteps of ex-Ajax aces Benni McCarthy, Daylon Claasen and Steven Pienaar, as well as Cameroon international midfielder Eyong Enoh – a member of the current Ajax squad that is placed third in the Dutch Premier League. The Soweto-born Serero, Pienaar (now Tottenham Hotspur FC) and Claasen (now Lierse FC, Belgium) were included in the 22player Bafana Bafana squad that will face Egypt in an African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier at Ellis Park, Johannesburg on Saturday 26 March. . Bafana Bafana Squad Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Wayne Sandlands, Darren Keet. Defenders: Morgan Gould, Sibonisi Gaxa, Bongani Khumalo, Prince Hlele, Anele Ngoncangca, Siyabonga Sangweni and Reuben Cloete. Midfielders: Andile Jali, Thanduyise Khumboni, Renelwe Letsholonyane, Steven Pienaar (captain), Daylon Claasen, Kagiso Dikgacoi, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Sifiso Myeni and Tiou Sengolela. Strikers: Kermit Erasmus, Bernard Parker, Davide Somme, Thulani Serero and Katlego Mphela.
