LESS than a month after a woman had her throat cut at The Beach Lodge in Muizenberg, former world super heavyweight champion kickboxer Michael Barnardo was found dead at The Empire building – a stone’s throw away. Barnardo (42) had lacerations to his throat. His father discovered the body on Tuesday 14 February, Valentine’s Day. Barnardo took part in K-1 World Grand Prix in Japan, and holds notable wins over Mirko Filipovic, Andy Hug, Francisco Filho, Branco Cikatic, and three straight wins over K-1 legend Peter Aerts. He later qualified as a clinical psychologist and had a practice in

Lakeside, where he offered trauma and addiction counselling. Barnardo’s second cousin, David Carew, was watching video footage of Barnardo’s fights when People’s Post visited him. Carew says Barnardo was like a brother to him. He says Barnardo started kickboxing in the navy, and went on to become a world champion. Barnardo won the majority of his fights, very often with knock-outs. “He was super fit,” says Carew. He adds Barnardo used to pray before every fight and pointed out a white cross displayed on his shorts. “Overseas, in Japan, he was like a god. People absolutely worshipped him,” says Carew, who says the twometre-tall man was not aggressive. “He had a heart of gold; he was very well liked and popular. He never used to boast; he was just like a normal guy.” Barnardo was also a martial arts fighter and boxer. Carew says last year Barnardo organised a cage fight at the Muizenberg Pavillion. Many tributes and videos have been added to Barnardo’s Facebook page. One describes Barnardo as a “gentle giant with a heart of gold’, another describes him as “a great fighter and an inspiration”. “You were a legend, inside and outside the ring,” is another comment. Born in Fish Hoek, Barnardo attended school in Plumstead. Captain Stephen Knapp, Muizenberg Police Station spokesperson, confirmed an inquest docket had been opened. No foul play was suspected. The case is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Ivan Rogers.

NOTICE OF A MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN
MINDFUL: Piet Smuts travels with only two bags, as he journeys whichever way the wind blows. He is pictured here in Fish Hoek. Photo: Teresa Fischer He lives off a small pension for 25 days of the month. “The other five days I go hungry.” Sometimes people invite him for dinner. Even if he won the lottery, he says he would keep two months worth and give the rest to shelters and crisis centres. “What must I do with it? Stay in a fancy place, for what?” “Everybody is so commercial; chasing around. They miss the beauty of life,” he says. “To live is to look at what God created. To watch the weather and how it changes. “When it rains everybody rushes
inside their houses... why not play outside in the rain?” he asks. Smuts carries no cellphone. “If I need to phone my grown-up children, I put 50c in the tickie box and they phone me back.” Time for him passes slowly. He still has 24 hours but can savour them.“Stand still for a while and see what’s going on,” he advises working people. “At lunchtime, go outside, don’t sit in the cafeteria; make use of your time. Relax, enjoy life.” “Work in your costume, swim in your clothes,” he quips. He adds, “It takes a mind-switch.”

Early on Monday morning she handcuffed herself to the foundations of the Chapman’s Peak construction site, which she says prevented the pouring of concrete planned for Monday. Lanker-Byrne broke her twoweek hunger strike on Sunday night with a glass of fruit juice, and yesterday ate some paw paw. She has been joined by Fiona Hinds, who has been at the site since last week. Hinds (49) and Charlie Gorton (31) last week handcuffed themselves to the building, bringing a halt to construction. Len Swimmer, chairperson of the Hout Bay Residents’ Association, says 800 to 1 000 people attended a sunset picnic on Sunday to support the protest. He says police questioned the women yesterday, but they left without attempting an arrest. “This is the only course of action that government will understand,” he adds. Swimmer says SanParks referred their legal letters to Province, who he says referred the matter to Murray and Roberts. [Legal letters were sent to the aforementioned parties last week.] “They are all passing the buck,” adds Swimmer.
ACCESS
HUNGER striker Bronwen Lankers-Byrne has changed tactics.
When People’s Post phoned Entilini, the company that operates the toll road, on a previous occasion, a spokesperson could not be reached for comment. Subcontractors referred questions to Province. Terry Wyner, of the Civil Rights Action Group (Crag), describes the tolling system planned for Chapman’s Peak as “archaic”. He explains that a prepaid system would be a costeffective and practical solution, and would render the planned plaza obsolete. He questions why, when residents of Hangberg in Hout Bay asked for SanParks land it was refused. Residents of Inzama Yethu were also refused land when they wanted to create a small vegetable garden. Wyner maintains that the issues should be thrashed out around the table. . Late on Monday afternoon, Lankers-Byrne said Hinds was about to be arrested for alleged malicious damage to property. This relates to alleged damage to signage on the toll road. Environmental campaigner Lewis Pugh described this as “ironic coming from a company that was damaging a World Heritage Site”.

“THERE are a lot of elderly gentlemen walking around Fish Hoek,” says René Lion-Cachet, there to feed the birds. “My wife is getting more boring by the day – since I bought her an iPad, I can’t get a word out of her – so I ignored her and went to sit next to this grey-haired gentlemen on a bench. I expected him to talk about his investments, but it turned out he is currently completely without abode...” People’s Post caught up with this wanderer, Piet Smuts, who was still sitting on the same bench at the beach later. “I love the place, I love when the trains come by,” he says, having taken a bit of convincing to share his story. He has been travelling for five months, leaving behind his restaurant in Gansbaai to go wherever he feels inclined – either on foot or using public transport. “It’s about thinking differently from normal people. If I get sick, I go to the clinic, wait nine and a half hours to see a doctor and by then I am fine again.” Smuts (60) used to be a computer programmer and also owned a bakery. He is now retired, but says this is the way he has always liked to spend his holidays. “I never plan a trip, this is more interesting,” he explains. He spends nights in backpackers or he finds a cosy hideaway behind a tree. Nobody bothers him. “I am happy on my own. I get to know people, it’s not like I am all alone on earth.”

Buck stops here IN a bid to fight fraud and corruption, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will re-register all social grant beneficiaries. There are over 15.3 million beneficiaries of social grants, of which 10.3 million are children. Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini has given an assurance that none of the 15.3 million social grants will be cut during re-registration. In fact, the introduction of an automated biometric-based payment system will enable Sassa to directly pay the right social grant to the right person. The first phase is from 1 March to the end of May. During this phase, beneficiaries should continue collecting their grants where they always do. During this period, new beneficiaries will be enrolled on the new biometric system at Sassa offices. The second phase, from June 1 to December 31, will see existing beneficiaries being enrolled on the new system at Sassa pay points, local offices and designated sites. Sassa will re-register beneficiaries over 75 years of age and bedridden beneficiaries at their homes and institutions. With thousands of convictions for grant fraud, it makes sense that Sassa constantly reviews and eliminates potential weaknesses in its system. An initial investment into a more sophisticated system equates to short term sacrifice for long term gain. Along with rolling out new payment models, educating those on the receiving end of fraudulently acquired grants, is compulsory. Social grants are for those who desperately need financial assistance, but sadly, there are shameless individuals who exploit the system, without a thought for the countless women whose childrens’ fathers have vanished. Without social grants, most of these mothers would have no means of providing for their offspring, which makes the actions of those cashing in on grants not due to them, more deplorable; and places the onus on every law-abiding citizen to intensify the fight against fraud.

Wonder of the world CONGRATULATIONS to John Rayner on his superb full moon photo (“Full Moon Rising”, People’s Post, 14 February 2012). I admire his desire to capture an airliner flying across the full moon. However, the silent moon, the silent tree, and the silent ibis flying overhead in his photo speak volumes of the wonder of the world we live in, and it is worthy of contemplation. Your SMSes Local thoughts . Are there regulations to force slumlords to paint and keep their properties in a reasonable condition? Muizenberg is really a very seedy and dirty suburb. What do I pay rates and taxes for? . About the rock fall in Boyes Drive, will it now be made into a toll road? Nic Pretorius . In response to the bottle stores in Ocean View that are open on Sundays. These people are licensed to be open from 12:00 till 17:00 and others aren’t. That’s why you’ll find some open and the others closed!
. We at Mez Wallach Retirement Complex are very disappointed to read about the ticket seller who was apparently rude. He is such a decent and respectable person, and always helps us when the train comes at 09:00. Mrs Winnie Johnson, Lakeside . Can we not have an apology from the whoever he is to Kurtley Meyer? Laurence . Well SSB, if you have to know what “typical” with regard to the Da Gama Park Flats means, its somewhat simple. When we lived in Blue Fin Courts in the 1980s (the good old days), the place was neat and tidy at all times, “typical” of a well-run military installation. The
whole place looks like a slum at the moment due to the “calibre” of people living there. You see, in the socalled dreadful past, the calibre of people living there had pride in the Navy as well as themselves. Most people used their own initiative to go beyond what was expected of them and kept their gardens shipshape and not “slum shape”. They most certainly did not go around shooting baboons. With all that said and done I salute those in the “new Navy” who do actually care. Pat H . I found a silver necklace at Windmill Beach and handed it in at Simon’s Town police station. One cents’ worth . The idea behind prices ending
with 99c is that cashiers are forced to give the customer change. If an item costs R100, instead of R99,99, the note might not reach the till! HH . Prices have not dropped much after the silly season, and the budget is not far off. We would be ripped off again. . Government must bring price control on all basic commodities. . I agree with Anon: all the prices of the goods ends with 99 cents. Why don’t they just make it R39 instead of R39,99? . The price ending with 9c reverts back to Ackermans’ sales of 1/11. For the new generation: one shilling and 11 pennies. The assistant had to ring up to give one penny
change and could not pocket the two shilling which could amount to a tidy sum over a week. Just a thought . There is not a lot to laugh about in life, but I was tickled pink on the cartoon about the drive-through hunger strike. Well done! A lot of people with no sense of humour will take offence; too bad for them. Gavin Thomson, take a bow – you are classic! Molly Geldenhuys, Kommetjie

Simon’s Town has lots to offer visitors WHAT a pleasure it is to see Simon’s Town being brightened up with the previously tatty Naval buildings being given a long overdue refurbishment. THE proposed Muizenberg homeless initiative was the hot topic at a community meeting held recently at the False Bay College. The meeting was convened by the Muizenberg Improvement District (MID), Muizenberg Community Safety Initiative (MCSI) and Safer Together, with an excellent turnout of interested individuals and organisations. In recent months there have been various discussions both in the Muizenberg community and with the City of Cape Town – to seriously look for a workable solution regarding the homeless people in Muizenberg village. Truida Prekel, who has been spearheading the initiative on behalf of the Muizenberg Community says, “We are pleased with the outcome of the community’s meeting with representatives of the City of Cape Town in seeking solutions regard-
ing homeless people in Muizenberg. The City has identified Muizenberg as a priority for establishing an assessment centre to help with establishing the needs, and help develop individualised plans to assist people. What is remarkable is the way the community is backing this initiative, mainly started by the MCSI, MID and Safer Together, and supported by business owners and private individuals alike.” The meeting was unanimous in agreeing to work with the City’s Social Development Department to establish this facility within the next two months. Cornelia Finch, District Head of Social Development, with service provider Melanie Brand, were appointed in December last year to assist the City with issues of homelessness. After community meetings in July and

October, a letter was sent to the Mayor and several top people in the City of Cape Town at the end of October, urging the City to work with the community to help establish a facility for the homeless. The letter was backed by letters from most local organisations and several businesses and individuals, and included a request that the Zandvlei Community Centre be made available – as it seemed the ideal location.“The community is very disappointed that this building has been allocated to the Traffic Department, and that this can evidently not be reversed. However, we will work with the City and together try to find a workable solution.” said Prekel. LIZ LINSELL AfricaWise Communications on behalf of the MID

Fish Hoek’s age-old beach blues YOUR article on the appalling state of Fish Hoek beach was welcome as I have been talking about these issues for years. (“Cinderella beach not on the ball”, People’s Post, 7 February 2012) All to seemingly deaf officials!
Muizenberg Police on the ball I WOULD like to comment on the amazing work the Muizenberg police did when our house got broken into. I think we should let the public know that we can still count on the police when we are in trouble. In the early hours of the morning on 19 January, our alarm went off and we rushed downstairs to see what had happened. We realised that we had been robbed when we saw the burglar bars removed and the open window and missing laptops. We immediately called the Muizenberg police station where Miss Mostert answered the call. Our call was processed immediately and when we called again with more infor-
mation, Miss Mostert passed the information on to the already dispatched vehicles and told us that the police were on their way. They arrived within minutes. We thought they were there to take statements, but they had already caught the thieves and recovered everything they had stolen. I would like to thank Warrant Officer Arrlson and Constables Frederiks, Davids, Lotriet and Essex for a job well done, as well as Miss Mostert who answered our calls. It was a huge relief to get our belongings back. It is also good to know that we can count on the Muizenberg police. MELINDA SCHOEMAN Muizenberg

For those that might stereotype and judge you, ignore them. You are an example to all of us. We hope many of us can learn from this. God bless you and your family. BRADLEY Welcome Glen
Cardboard provides flimsy cover AT 03:26 on Tuesday 14 February, the burglar alarm of a factory in Honeywell Road, Steenberg, was activated. The client was advised and two officers from Wain Carew Security Services met the client at the factory. On opening, two intruders were caught hiding under cardboard on a mezza-
nine floor and were arrested. A further two intruders were found outside hiding under bushes together with stolen property to the value of close on R40 000. All four men were handed to the Kirstenhof Police. BRIAN JAMES Lakeside Neighbourhood Watch
No bins at traders’ market I AM surprised at Ms Purchase’s response to Ms Hammond’s letter as it is obvious that they are both discussing the same issue. (“Improve Local Traders’ Market”, People’s Post, 14 February 2010) How are traders expected to maintain the area when they have no bins for rubbish? One portable toilet to share and a container for wood that looks like the contractor could not get it off the truck fast enough as it is poorly located. What happens to the small fee that these traders are expected to pay and what is it used for? There is no evidence of any management of this area. The wall behind the traders was damaged by high winds a few years ago and no repairs have been made. The trading area is basically sand and a need for a proper solid flooring – even sub-base would be better than the sand – is required to make trading

attractive. The green area is full of devil thorns that needs pulling and a proper planting scheme required. Why, as an additional tourist attraction, can the area directly opposite, along with an area along Kommetjie Road, not also be developed as a trading area which would allow more people who have the initiative and skill to produce tradable local craft to provide income for their family? This has to be better than people parking their cars for sale on these areas. As for providing services, how come the canals at the back of Silverglades are once more overgrown with reeds and rubbish with a council yard not 200m away. They were cleaned once when the DA took over the council and have not been done since. TONY DONMALL Silverglades

Wetland paradise TERESA FISCHER
IT HAS been called Fish Hoek’s best kept secret... hidden at the outskirts of the town is a wetland haven, teeming with birds and other wildlife such as mongoose. Even otters are thought to be breeding in the dam of the Silvermine Wetland Conservation Area. Porcupines and Cape Grysbok have been spotted at night. A 1.8 kilometre circular path winds between the reeds, used by dog walkers and joggers. The dogs help to keep the area safe, and visitors feel reasonably safe walking in the wetland. Most recently, nine new illustrated colour boards have been added along the pathway and two new signboards have been added near the Main Road. These were made possible by a R25 000 donation from the Rowland and Leta Hill Trust. The group will keep these boards updated with information about flowers and animals relative to the season. Terry Rothwell explains that about a 100 years ago the area was just sand dunes, with the river following a mean-
dering path. Dykes were built in 1902 and 1925 to channel the river. Originally some plates from the Kakapo Wreck, that occurred on Noordhoek beach in 1902, were used to channel the river and remnants of this can still be seen. When the railway was built it became necessary to make sure that the river stayed on one course. The Silvermine River Group was formed in the 1980s to try and persuade the City not to build a canal to control the river, but rather to make it a more natural feature. In 2000 a Friends’ group called the Riverine Rovers, under the auspices of the Friends of Silver Mine Nature Area (FOSNA), took over from the Silvermine River group. They are a small group of neighbouring residents and they nurture the area, clearing invasive plants, maintaining paths and even picking up dog poo. “Despite much asking we only have seven reasonably regular volunteers with a couple of visitors who help us with this work,” says Rothwell. Councillor David d’Alton praised the efforts of the residents, calling it a “marvellous community initiative”.

THE first official South African SUP Stand up Paddle and Paddleboard team is in Peru to compete in the ISA championships which started with a Parade of Nations through the streets of Lima and the Sands of the World ceremony on Sunday. The inaugural world championships in these disciplines runs until Saturday 25 February and the Far South is well represented with Justin Bing (Noordhoek) in the SUP surfing contingent while the Bertish brothers, Chris and Greg, from Hout Bay are amongst the SUP racing squad, Anna Notten from St James is the female prone paddler and Gary van Rooyen (Kommetjie) is the coach. See www.supsa.org.za for more details on the South African team and follow their fortunes live during the event at www.isawsuppc.com. The second of three trials to select the Western Province team for the SA Grommets Games in Port Elizabeth over the Easter weekend was run at Muizenberg recently and there was a massive turnout by the youngsters, the oldest of whom are 16. Birk Jorgensen in the under 16 Boys and Sebastian Bidoli the u/14 Boys are the only two surfers to have won both trials to date and lead the rankings in their respective divisions. Kelly Williams heads the u/16 Girls standings with a first and second placing, as does Cealliegh Redelinghuis the u/12 girls and Sebastien Fletcher in the u/10 Boys. Luke van Wyk and Alex Townsend are tied at the top of the u/8 rankings, the youngest age category, as are Ethan Row and Redd-Val-
entino Debray in the u/14 Boys while Caitlin Brouckaert is the current leader in the u/14 Girls The third trial for the Groms is this weekend and the WP trials for the u/20’s, Open and Masters teams to represent the province at national championships later this year get underway on the weekend 3 and 4 March. Membership and entry forms along with all the Groms results can be found at http:// www.wpsurfing.co.za. The WP Longboard Surfing Association is holding its second set of trials on Sunday for the team to compete in the SA Champs at Victoria Bay from April 29 – 5 May. Far South surfers fared well in the first trial at Misty Cliffs and Witsands last month with Michael Grendon (Scarborough) winning both the Open and Masters divisions, Alan Robb (Kom) the Grandmasters, Deon Bing (Noordhoek) the Senior Men and Gary van Rooyen (Kom) the Super Vets. More info at www.wplba.co.za. Wave-riders have enjoyed excellent weather and surf this year with one hardcore Far South surfing family reportedly waking at 3am on the recent full moon to don their wetsuits and get some waves all by themselves at a normally crowded Kommetjie surfspot. Full moon surfing was a regular pastime back in the days before Great White sharks became a protected species and then moved inshore after becoming habituated to chum, bait and human contact without any adverse consequences. Decades passed between shark sightings back then, but with scores now spotted in the shallows every summer it takes dedicated and brave souls to venture into the ocean at night these days!
New starting point for race THE organisers of the tenth annual Lighthouse race have advised participants that the start and finish points have been moved from the lighthouse to the lawns near Rocklands Beach, opposite the SABC studios in Beach Road. The fast and flat route follows a 10km loop along the Sea Point promenade and is perfect for those wanting to post a personal best, or for those just looking for a fun evening jog or walk next to the ocean. The race will take place on Wednesday 7 March and starts at 18:15. Participants can enter on the day from 16:45 onwards.
Entry costs R30 for licensed runners and R45 for unlicensed runners, while juniors will pay R15 if they have a licence and R25 if not. This year’s medal depicts the lighthouse on Dassen Island and will be handed out to the first 2 000 participants. There are also some great lucky draw prizes including a 32-inch flat screen TV. Supporters, spectators and families are encouraged to bring a picnic, watch the sunset and enjoy the race. Contact Tony Breslin on 082 888 2307 or visit www.atlanticathletic.co.za for more information.
