Woman’s throat slit at backpackers TERESA FISCHER

A

50-year-old woman is in a serious condition in hospital after her throat was slit at The Beach Lodge in Muizenberg. Evelyn Born, an employee of the backpackers, located at Surfer’s Corner, was airlifted to hospital after the assault, which happened at 16:00 on Wednesday 18 January. Staff at Gaslight Cafe, who came to her aid, declined to comment, saying they were still traumatised by what had happened. An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, describes the scene as “horrific” and says the victim was covered in blood from neck to feet. Police confirmed an undisclosed amount of money had been taken, but had not yet determined if anything else was missing. At the backpackers, visitors need to ring the bell at a security gate facing the beach and then take the stairs to the reception area, where it understood the incident occurred. This front area can be locked but was open when People’s Post visited the building. Staff, who asked not to be named, said there were no guests inside at the time of the incident, and that Born was working alone. Dave Jones, of the Empire, Cafe says: “I consider the area pretty safe – the event was extremely odd and makes me think there is more to the story.” The man said to own the premises later declined to comment when contact by telephone, saying via his receptionist that he was not in fact the owner, and adding that he did not know why

the newspaper had been given his name. At 13:00 on the day after the assault, police arrested a 21-yearold man at his Muizenberg home. Warrant Officer November Filander says the suspect was due to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 23 January. He was to be charged with attempted murder and business robbery. Filander would not comment on speculation that the suspect was an employee of The Beach Lodge, saying the matter was still under investigation. Jones adds that he saw the victim being transferred to the helicopter by paramedics. “Everyone there was calm and professional. It stood out how well trained and practised they are.” He says that the Muizenberg Improvement District has replaced the informal car guards with “Beach Buddies”, saying the programme is an excellent idea and is seen to be working well. He adds: “There are crimes, obviously. Tourists are bait and Muizenberg is within walking distance of poorer areas.” Bruce Anderson, from the Lifestyle Surf shop next door, says: EMERGENCY: Paramedics prepare to airlift the woman to hospital. Photo: Dave Jones “The beachfront area is pretty safe, but you take your chances if you walk in the village. Muizenberg is the place we love to hate, but that’s just South Africa unfortunately... one has to learn to adapt and survive. It really upsets me that I can’t walk home at night without having to constantly watch my back.” Andre Visser of ER24 confirmed the victim was in a serious condition at Groote Schuur Hospital . The Hospital was unable to provide an update on her condition, as their spokesperson was on leave. Anyone with information regarding the incident can contact the Muizenberg Police on (021) 787 9000 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111. Building greener, prouder schools AS part of the Back to School Campaign, Proudly South African will feature three member companies making a positive difference in education, the lives of children and job creation. This week, Minieze Taylor, corporate social investment manager at greenOFFICE, is featured. His focus is educating the youth about environmental responsibility and the positive difference they can make to their schools and community. “The greenSCHOOL programme was launched to get learners, their parents, teachers and the community involved in making a positive difference on our planet,” says Taylor. “The greenSCHOOL programme is a corporate social investment (CSI) initiative of greenOFFICE, which aims to assist learners in actively participating in recycling programmes, raising funds for their school’s green initiatives such as waste management.” He says learners collect used printer cartridges and take them to school, where greenOFFICE collects them. Some schools have been collecting for the last five years. “The funds go to the school, and for every 100 cartridges collected, greenOFFICE do-

ing learners about recycling and the benefits.” greenSCHOOL attends school assemblies and various school functions.

“The greenSCHOOL programme reaches future recyclers and conveys the message of being sustainable in simple and practical ways,” says Taylor. “The highlight has been the ability to grow the greenSCHOOL programme. It has certainly been an achievement for us. The programme started with only four schools in 2006 and grew to assist over 55 schools in 2011.” He says challenge is that the lack of education prevents a lot of people from recycling properly. “The greenSCHOOL programme is constantly educating the community, to counter a lack of knowledge and skills. We are slowly but surely reaching a group of young minds who will grow up to become the ambassadors of recycling in their homes and communities.” The greenSCHOOL programme hopes to collect 100 000 cartridges in 2012. “We would like to keep all the cartridges we collect out of landfill and have them recycled by our non-profit organisation, greenABLE. “Naturally, we would like to add more schools to our programmes. Continuing a great relationship with current schools is vital to the success of greenSCHOOL, so this is definitely a goal for 2012 and beyond,” says Taylor.

Baboon returns to mountain TERESA FISCHER

DUBBED “Johnnie Walker”, a lone male baboon that wondered through Harfield Village, Kenilworth and Rondebosch last week appears to have made his way back to the mountain. On Tuesday 17 January, he paused on the roof of Hobnobs restaurant in Kenilworth, but evaded authorities. “He probably wanted a beer,” joked Graham Schaffers of Plumstead, who followed the baboon, taking some photographs as it rested on the wall of a veterinary clinic. “He was exhausted from running,” says Shaffers. Then on Thursday, the animal was captured inside the kitchen of a Rondebosch house, but managed to escape before he was darted. Dr Elzette Jordan, a veterinarian with the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management Department, says it has not been established if he is indeed a “rogue baboon”. “The male was a dispersing male,

looking for another troop to join as he does not want to stay and breed in his family troop. This is a perfectly natural happening within the baboon world and how they deal with the problem of possible interbreeding. It is, even in the natural world, always a journey fraught with dangers. He is alone, without the protection of a troop, and he has to face other males who might want to fight. Should he find a troop he wishes to join he has to play a very intricate social game in order to be accepted into the ranks.” She adds where he will “pop out next is anyone’s guess”. Jordan went on to say the baboon has not been identified with 100 percent accuracy and therefore the City cannot comment on his history. She says this affects the possible outcomes should he be caught. According to Jordan, the various options are: . Return to the native troop should it transpire that this is his first attempt at dispersing. . Translocation to another troop on the Peninsula where there is a gap for a new male due to a favoura-

ble sex-ratio in the potential receiving troop. . Euthanasia, should none of the other options be open or valid, or should his history as a raiding male warrant such a decision. Brett Glasby, the SPCA’s wildlife unit manager, explains the biggest concern is people feeding the baboon or chasing and throwing stones at it. He adds it is difficult to dart baboons in public places, as it takes eight minutes for the drugs to take effect and there is also the added risk of hitting a bystander. Regarding worries that the baboon would be euthanased, he says the protocol involves weighing up aggravating circumstances, such as continual raiding and whether the areas raided have adequate garbage control. He says the decision goes through three committees. The SPCA no longer darts baboons, but Glasby says he works closely with the Nature Conservation Corporation which manages baboons for the City, to ensure proper procedures are followed.

MAKING A STATEMENT: Protesters gather at the site of the proposed toll plaza and office building to house Entilini staff on Chapman’s Peak. Transport MEC Robin Carlisle has since published an information bro chure online in an attempt to “fully inform” the public. It can be found at www.safelyhome.co.za/chapmanspeak/chapmanspeak.pdf. Dead baboon found in flats THE body of a juvenile baboon was found lying in the corridor of a block of flats in Da Gama Park on Wednesday 18 January. According to the Baboon Liaison Group, the death is considered suspicious and an autopsy will be done to determine the cause. Anyone with information please contact Nature Conservation on 071 588 6540 or the Baboon Reporting Hotline on 071 588 6540.

THE body of a man who drowned in Kommetjie on Saturday 21 January was found later in the day. Tom Coetzee, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Kommetjie station commander, says at 15:43 the NSRI received a report of a man missing in the surf at Inner Komm, near the Kommetjie boat slip-way. “It appears that a 29-year-old father was swimming with his eightyear-old son when he got into difficulty and disappeared underwater at around 11:30 this morning. “Two eye-witnesses and the

Frank was the first manager of the CID after it was founded in January 2000 by the late Clive Wakeford, who passed away last year, and Janet Holwill, who remains a member of the CID’s executive committee. During various speeches by influential members of the Fish Hoek business community on Wednesday night, Frank was honoured for his relentless commitment to making the central business district of Fish Hoek a safe and pleasant trading area during the 11 years he served as CID manager. The right way ACCESS and the right to education should be honoured and respected. Last year Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) students protested and again this year. Both protests were marred by violent incidents, with looting the institution’s cafeteria making the news in 2011 and pelting stones at security last week sparking reaction from CPUT management. When violence and destructive behaviour overshadow what may constitute a noble motivation behind a demonstration, sympathy and empathy dissipate. Yes, the students have a sound reason for protesting, but the manner in which they have, is unacceptable in civilised society; and has courted nothing but disastrous consequences for them. Some of the protesters have been barred from registration, while others were evicted from residence. Criminal complaints were filed against students for the stone throwing. The protesters were opposed to the hike in registration fees. Yesterday, CPUT published an ad in the local press, explaining its fees’ increase. It stated: “Council was aware that not all students would be able to afford the upfront payment and created a safety net by asking the CPUT management to negotiate and accommodate as far as possible, those students who have difficulty in raising the upfront payment.” CPUT management and student leadership met on 12 January about concerns around the fees increase, with management willing to continue discussions with students. Education is pivotal to creating a better life and future for oneself and generations to come and more so, for those previously marginalised. It is indeed a sad day when the importance of education is undermined by selfish behaviour, more suited to criminals than the country’s future captains of industry.

Your SMSes Fred’s brain was not the problem IN response to Lynette’s tribute to Eric (“Farewell to our special Eric”, People’s Post, 17 January) missing since November, Bafana, from the Da Gama Park troop also went missing in November. A decomposing body of a baboon was found in Kommetjie in January. Could officials confirm if this was Eric? The series Baboons with Bill Bailey, about three local baboon troops, the Da Gama, Tokai and Smitswinkel troops, is currently on Animal Planet. Fred, alpha male of the Smitswinkel troop, is one of the stars of the programme, made a few months before his culling in March 2011. However, this month people around the world were appalled to also see Fred as the posthumous “star” of Rogue baboon – Inside nature’s giants, a graphically gory dissection programme with an evolutionary bias. Also featured were a veterinary scientist, a comparative anatomist and a researcher from the Cape Peninsula Baboon Research Unit (BRU). On the programme, Fred’s arm and hand, said to be similar to a human’s, were cut open to show the tendons. He was emasculated, an apple put into his cheek pouch to demonstrate its capacity, the skin removed from half his face to show the muscles that give baboon expressions and his head sawn open to reveal his “big brain”. “Poor Fred,” said the scientist, “too clever for his own good.” Fred’s intelligence was not the real problem when all humans needed to do to prevent

School rules . Well done on your good matric results and your perseverance in collecting registration fees, Mr Klein. Parents need to prioritise: stop buying expensive cellphones and clothes and rather invest in your kids’ education. Proud parent . I admire Mr Klein for his no-nonsense approach to the non-payment of school fees. The two primary school principals must get a few tips from him. Viva Mr Klein!

Just a thought . To the family in Peers Hill who allow their kid to scream at 07:00 on a Saturday morning: You are inconsiderate! . SAPS is checking drivers’ licences at four-way stops on Kommetjie Road, but why can’t they stop drug pedlars who brazenly trade in full view? Pedlars also operate on motorcycles. Make traffic cops do their work. By the way

. For heaven’s sake, just close poor Chapman’s Peak and let corruption happen unseen. . So you think corruption is rife in the country? Just wait for the Secrecy Bill to become law. You ANC nothing yet! Jeffrey Solomon . My niece’s phone went missing on the 06:10 train from Retreat to Heathfield. It’s a metallic blue Nokia C3. A reward is offered. Please call (021) 701 4092 or 078 364 3324.

Festive Navy lights sorely missed

MISSING: Bafana, like Eric, also went missing in November. Here he looks at his hand, which was injured in October. Photo: Supplied Fred raiding cars, was lock the car door and close the window or baboon-proof their house or bin. What happens to other baboons after they die or are culled? Are they also used for research purposes? LORNA THOMAS Fish Hoek

WHO can tell me why there were no Christmas lights or decorations on the Navy Vessels in the harbour this past Christmas? We have lived in Simon’s Kloof for the past 16 years, have had a guest house for that period and enjoyed having guests comment on the Navy Christmas lights displayed during the festive season. Sadly it is not only visitors from overseas and local holiday makers, but also the resi-

dents of the Far South that have suddenly had a small pleasure taken away. What is the reason? Who was told that this would be the situation? Why are we left in the dark? Who rules the waves now? Aagh what a shame. MRS. V. EGLINGTON Simon’s Kloof

Beware the grey-haired menace TO the grey-haired gentleman in the steel grey vehicle who came speeding up the Main Road past Klein Vishoek at 11:08 on Sunday 22 January, overtaking on the inside, narrowly missing some cyclists, and then weaving in and out of traffic, eventually turning left into the Glencairn Expressway: I am not particu-

larly concerned about your fate, as anyone who drives in such a dangerous fashion will sooner or later get his comeuppance. However, you might like to spare a thought for the innocent road users you might take with you. ANONYMOUS Simon’s Town

Doors open for an exciting 2012 at Chas Everitt FALSE Bay and surrounding areas have started off the New Year with a bang! After a successful year-end rush, Chas Everitt False Bay has been inundated with new buyers and investors who are shopping for homes and “lock-up-and-go” type secure accommodation. There are many homes up for sale and we are kept busy as a result. Buyers are, through our exposure on multiple websites, visiting us and sellers are turning to us because of our exclusive listings.

Also, many welcome Gautengers visit us with special requirements; security being a top priority. Sadly, many are battling to sell homes in Gauteng but are still keen to assess the availability of homes in False Bay, which we are pleased to say is withstanding the general slowdown prevalent in other parts of the country. The residential property market here in False Bay is therefore pretty buoyant and there are always properties for sale, for the usual reasons. But this year there is a re-

newed impetus because of the global economic situation, and because it is now officially a buyer’s market. Some sellers are having to lower their estimation of their properties worth as a result. A hard reality to face up to! Buyers are putting “cheeky offers” on the table and much negotiation is taking place. Homes in the higher priced categories are taking the brunt of the downturn as a result. Selling (asking prices) at between

R1 million to R1.5 million is where the bulk of sales is taking place. Some sales are being concluded at 15% to 17% below asking prices, although there have been sales at between R3 million and R5 million on the mountainside. Clovelly is a sought-after location, especially for golfers, who know the famous 18-hole course well and choose to be near to this haven and the beach. As you drive around Fish Hoek and Clovelly, Noordhoek and surrounds, and see the number of sold

signs on boards, contact our False Bay office. We can offer you excellent service backed up by a responsible and experienced team of Realtors. Stop press... Location location location. Something fishy in Muizenberg TERESA FISCHER

THERE is a new big fish at Muizenberg’s beach front, but it’s no shark. A cheerful green Koi fish mural emerged this week on the wall of the toilets, facing the sea. Dave Jones from the Empire Cafe posted a photograph of it on his Facebook page, “Muizen Berg”, and by Friday it had received 122 “likes” and plenty of positive comments such as “spectacular”, “rad” and “shweet”.

Shani Judes of SJ artists funded the mural, which was painted by an artist from Sau Paulo, Brazil, called Binho Ribeiro. Judes says they have permission to create murals on six other walls, but that the cost will be about R10 000 per mural. “If anyone knows of anyone who loves Muzi and wants to see more, the artists are keen. We just need funding.” On facebook, some posters commented that the fish appeared to be swimming upside down, but Judes explains that the fish is not

FACELIFT: More of these colourful murals are planned for Muizenberg.

“belly up” as the white section in the middle is his back. She explains it symbolises upliftment and says there has been an “awesome” reaction. The Muizenberg Improvement District (MID) supports murals and public art, with a view to beautifying the environment and attracting visitors to the area. The MID manager, who asked not to be named for security reasons, supports Judes’ efforts. “Graffiti has been an issue in Muizenberg for many years and is a sensitive matter

with the local community,” she says, adding that various groups and individuals, including the MID, have made it their business to clear defaced surfaces with graffiti-busting initiatives. ’ She says: “In contrast to ugly tagging and messy graffiti, graphically designed murals are works of art which have a positive impact on perception of the quality of experience in any given public space.” Contact: shani@shanijudes.co.za or 083 509 5106

Side splitting fun in Fish Hoek THE Comedy in the Valley series is back in 2012. The year kicks off with Barry Hilton and Mike King, from New Zealand, on stage in a comedy show at Fish Hoek High School on 11 February at 19:00. Barry Hilton’s unrehearsed performances, quick wit, animated physical antics and facial expressions leave audiences gasping for air. Hilton is as well-known for his humorous TV adverts and for the well-

received movie Finding Lenny as he is for his hilarious stand-up comedy. Mike King is known for his entertaining, candid and thought-provoking brand of comedy. He is one of New Zealand’s most popular comedians, and has performed at more international festivals than any other comedian from his country. A familiar face on New Zealand television, he has hosted numerous comedy series and specials. The series is supported by People’s Post as

print media sponsor and all proceeds from the shows will be donated to Shark Spotters. Tickets are R100 prebooked or R120 on the door. Bookings: Call 078 174 4244, email sharkspotters@gmail.com or go to AP Jones, Fish Hoek Main Road.

HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Barry Hilton and Mike King will take each other on in the Comedy in the Valley Series on 11 February at Fish Hoek High School.

Ship-shape 2012 THE Ship Society of SA, a non-profit organisation, is raising funds by selling a special calendar. It is approximately 42x56cm and the cover painting is by one of their members. Cost is R25. Email Pauline on brupa@telkomsa.net

All things Scottish at the Kelvin Grove Five years ago, we managed to convert millions of South Africans to using CFL energy saving light bulbs and saved you money. Now, five years later, we’re back to change your energy savers that have reached the end of their life. Continue to use energy savers to collectively save South Africa’s energy. Energy saving lightbulbs have an environmental benefit because they cut your lighting cost by using less electricity and last up to eight times longer, resulting in a reduction in greenhouse gases. The small amount of mercury that energy saving lightbulbs contain is almost used up by the time the lightbulb is ready for disposal. So try not to break the lamp and dispose of CFLs at participating retailers.

Everyone looking to renew their spent CFLs for free

TIME to get out your bagpipes and kilts as renowned scottish personalities will address the Burns Supper at Kelvin Grove. The Cape Town Burns Supper Club will host its 19th Annual Burns Supper at the Kelvin Grove Club on Saturday 4 February to celebrate the great bard Robert Burns’ birth as well as all things Scottish. Visiting our shores to address the gathering will be the distinguished scientist and educator Dr Peter Hughes, OBE, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering and guest of honour, Sir Lachlan Maclean of Duart and Morvern, the 12th Baronet, and 28th Chief of the Clan Maclean. This prestigious event - which has focused on raising funds for a nominated charity every year - has become one of Cape Town’s most popular and glittering social gatherings. The 2012 dinner will as usual be a grand affair with an exciting line-up of eminent local and international speakers; an action packed programme, fine food, wine and whisky galore, as well as lots of superb prizes to be won. The pre-function gathering starts at 18:30 followed by the stirring sounds of the Regimental Drums & Pipes of the Cape Town Highlanders leading a Grand March down the Club driveway. The dinner includes a three- course meal as well as the traditional haggis, neeps & tatties, whisky and wine. It begins in the suitably Scottish-themed ballroom at 19:30. Seats are limited, so book now to avoid disappointment. For bookings, please call Lauren on 083 274 9126 or email lauren@signatureproductions.co.za.

Old CFLs can be exchanged for new ones in two ways: a. There will be a door-to-door exchange (people will come to your door to do the exchange). b. Self exchange points will be set up in certain areas, where you will be able to go and do the exchange.

Don’t miss out! Save energy and save money!

No matter the weather, Awalih stands on the side of the road near the Kommetjie Road intersection in Sun Valley, selling his fish. Moulded from sheets of scrap metal, his fish have wonderfully expressive faces – droopy eyelids and pursed lips, and detailed finishes. He welds the scales and other markings on his work, and then finishes them off with a clear varnish. Their scales shimmer in the sunlight. Thick wire is used in making their fins.Awalih (28) lives in Sun Valley, but is originally from Malawi, where he learnt to make the fish from a friend. “It’s about survival,” he says. He is married with a wife and baby in Malawi. For a while he lived in Kynsna, and his ocean inspired creations were also popular there. He explains that he buys sheets of the scrap and works on batches of them from his home. In a month he can sell between 10 and 20 fish. To add to the school, there are also smaller fish to choose from. He sells to tourists and locals in equal numbers. “They say they are very beautiful,” he says with quiet modesty. .

Stormers’ youngsters run riot LIAM MOSES

THE Western Cape has long been considered to be one of the most prolific producers of talented rugby players in South Africa, and one of the most prolific in the world. And this belief was proven again on Saturday, when a youthful Stormers team brushed aside the Boland Kavaliers in their first warm-up game of the 2012 Super Rugby season. The Stormers went into the match without the services of experienced players such Andries Bekker, Schalk Burger, Bryan Habana, Duane Vermeulen, Gio Aplon or any of the regulars who lead the team to victory in the South African conference of the 2011 Super Rugby campaign. However, despite the absence of so many first choice players, Alister Coetzee’s charges still managed to run in seven tries and win the match 45-17. The Stormers pack dominated the collision point from virtually the first minute, and it wasn’t long before they were to profit from their superior fervour for physicality. Young tight-head prop Frans Malherbe was the first to set the scorekeepers to task when he barged

The speedy development of youngsters at the union has also swelled the Stormers’ forward ranks. Coetzee will know that, despite winning the Currie Cup First Division in 2011, Boland are a world away from the quality they will face every week in Super Rugby. The Stormers will face stiffer opposition this week, when they clash with 2011 Currie Cup champions the Lions at Newlands on Friday.

Badminton pioneer honoured as a ‘legend’ MARK WARD

BADMINTON stalwart Finn Stender was amongst several sports personalities honoured as “Legends” by the Western Cape sports community and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. Finn (77) started playing badminton in 1944 and was ranked second in the country during the 1960’s. Between 1981 and 2009 he served in various administrative capacities at both provincial and national level. He is currently a life member and the honorary president of the Western Province Badminton Associa-

tion. Finn was one of 33 legends honoured during the ceremony. This was the seventh edition of the awards function, which took place just before Christmas at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. These awards honoured pioneers of different sporting codes who have contributed to the transformation and development of their particular code of sport. The recipients were recognised for their contribution, not only on a national level but specifically to the Western Cape. This year legends in rugby, canoeing, dance sport, badminton, sailing and netball, were honoured.

Ivan Meyer, MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape, was the keynote speaker at the event, and lauded the recipients for their contribution in upholding true sportsmanship. “A legend is not a hero. A hero is someone who will be remembered for now, but a legend is someone who will be remembered forever. Today I am honoured and proud to be amongst you because you are true legends,” said Meyer. “We lived through painful times when the colour of your skin prevented you from stepping out onto the sports field, no matter how much talent you were blessed with.

“We lived through a time where our own brothers and sisters left South Africa to go and play for other countries, which welcomed them and saw only a great sporting star. They didn’t see in black and white. Thankfully that time has passed. For this I am honoured to be in your presence.” “Through your refusal to be put down by a racist political system, through your commitment to uplift your community and train your neighbours and their children, through your fighting and sporting spirit, we now live in a true democracy. A democracy that is colourblind.”
