School discipline under scrutiny Two scholars stabbed by Grade 10 pupil at Groenvlei High TAMMY PETERSEN

T

WO students were stabbed by a knifewielding classmate at Groenvlei High on Friday, two weeks after police searched the Lansdowne school for weapons and illegal substances. And while local police officers responded to the incident, a group of 10 scholars – in grades 8, 9 and 10 – were found intoxicated on school grounds. They apparently drank a bottle of brandy on the premises. Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesperson for Lansdowne police, says the stabbing happened shortly before midday in the school courtyard. The three boys claim to have been “playing a game”, but police believe the story was concocted in an attempt to get themselves out of trouble. Lakey says the officers responded to the call-out after being told by school representatives of a stabbing on the grounds. A Grade 10 boy allegedly stabbed a fellow Grade 10 learner under his arm and a Grade 11 student in his side. The Grade 10 learner was taken to Gatesville Medical Centre for treatment by his mother. The Grade 11 learner was taken by ambulance to Victoria Hospital after his lung collapsed. When police arrived, the students had already been taken to hospital. “The principal, Walter Adonis, committed to following up on the matter and handling it internally. The parents also have not yet

laid any criminal charges so we are unable to investigate this serious incident. We would, however, encourage the parents to come forward as what happened is viewed in a serious light.” Sector manager, Warrant Officer Gregory Gray, also discussed the dangers of alcohol and weapons with the scholars in an assembly before they were dismissed. A frustrated Adonis blames the incident on a lack of “good values and self-respect”. “This could have happened anywhere. What is happening is that what the children are seeing in society is what they are bringing to school. This is totally unacceptable and we will take action to ensure it doesn’t happen again.” He confirms that the students claim they were playing a “township game”, which Adonis dismisses as “absurd”. “All three have been suspended and further steps will be taken as we intend to expel them. We have spoken with the parents involved who have decided to address the matter themselves. They have agreed that they will choose what the best way forward is.” People’s Post previously reported on a search conducted by police at the school on Wednesday 16 February, where officers and sniffer dogs walked through the classrooms in search of illegal substances and weapons. Only a phone containing pornographic material was found. Adonis says random searches are conducted and that a hand-held metal detector is also used at the school. “However, this cannot be done all the time. What we need is for the parents to teach their children what is right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable. This is an institution of learning, not of rectifying the ills of society.” He says the group of students who were caught drinking have all been suspended. “A learner reported the incident to a senior

staff member who followed up on it. It was found that the alcohol had been mixed with cooldrink in an Appletiser bottle, which they drank during a break. We are dealing with the parents, who we expect to resolve the issue with their children.” He adds that the school’s name is the “last thing (he is) worried about” and that his first concern is the well-being of his students. “But the most important thing to remember is that the staff is not here to teach the children morals, values and responsibility. This is the role of the parent, who has to be firm and promote good behaviour. When they come here, it should be with the sole purpose to learn and gain their education.”

Lakey says the station previously deployed a group of student constables at the school, where the officers-in-training were given a classroom for their theoretical training while also keeping an eye on discipline. “The officers finished this leg of their training in September last year and when the new batch are deployed, we will again meet with the school management to look at repeating this process.” Paddy Attwell, spokesperson for the provincial Education Department, says Safe Schools is working closely with the school to improve the security infrastructure and to address other safety issues. tammy.petersen@peoplespost.co.za

Fun with numbers FUN AND GAMES took centre stage at Belmor Primary on Friday as the school hosted a “Numeracy Day” to show learners how much fun mathematics can be. Children

were treated to various games involving numbers and spent hours enjoying the sunshine as they challenged one another in the school courtyard.

After school action for Manenberg kids TAMMY PETERSEN

TIRED of going home after school and flopping down in front of the TV because you have nothing else to do? An exciting new programme will be launched in Manenberg to ensure that children use their spare time to harness their talents and learn new skills while enjoying hours of fun. The Amy Biehl Foundation, in conjunction with the Holy Family of Nazareth Catholic Church, will be opening the Manenberg After School Centre on Saturday on the church grounds. The foundation, named after a young American exchange student murdered in Gugulethu, is a non-profit organisation which hosts outreach programmes for young people in impoverished areas in a bid to keep them off the streets. The foundation and its projects are funded by donations and fundraisers. Ricardo Cupido, the project manager at the foundation, says activities such as hiphop classes, brass band training and sport development are just some of the items

planned for local youth. “The programme will be focused on fun and educational pastimes and is open to children aged from six to 18. There is really something for everyone and all activity is monitored by local volunteers and project facilitators from the foundation,” he explains. Plans are also under way to increase activities in environmental awareness, computer training, peer education, digital music writing and filming by the end of July. Cupido says activities started at the end of last year and the centre currently attracts 150 children to the facility from Monday to Thursday. “We are planning to increase numbers to well over 300 and children from any religion are welcome to take part. The two-hour programme starts at 15:00 and is absolutely free,” he says. The centre is modelled on four fully functional centres in Gugulethu and Nyanga, which have proven to be a hit with young people. Parents are encouraged to send their children to the church at 34 Manenberg Avenue, next to the sports field. For more information, phone the foundation on (021) 462-5052.

STANDING PROUD: Anthony Wright and Angela de Mello, wellknown international ballet teachers based in Italy, shared their expertise with the teaching faculty at Dance for All (DFA) from Monday 21 February until Saturday 5 March and taught DFA’s senior ballet students (pictured) at the organisation’s studios in Aden Road, Athlone. South African born De Mello and UKborn Wright were “delighted” with the standard of dance at DFA. HAPPY MOMENT: The Eoan Group and the School of Per forming Arts were invited to per form two of their dances at the FNB Dance Umbrella at the Wits Theatre in Gauteng on Sat urday 26 and Sunday 27 Febru ary. It is the premier dance festi val in South Africa. Called “The Mirror Crack’d” and “Words without Voices”, the dance pieces were choreographed by the sister/brother duo of Abee dah and Ebrahim Medell. They relate to the different challeng es of life, and were performed by nine young people ranging between the ages of 14 and 26, from areas such as Kewtown, Silvertown, Bonteheuwel, Samora Machel and Mitchell’s Plain. These previously disadvan taged young people took the FNB Dance Umbrella to new heights with their stirling performanc es. The tour was arranged and paid for by the Eoan Group, and allowed these young people to tour for four days without placing a financial burden on their parents. Some of these young dancers had their first experience of travelling and performing on professional stages.

Athburg Walk ‘drug den’ raided TAMMY PETERSEN

A RAID at a house in Hanover Park saw a large quantity of drugs as well as more than R15 000 being confiscated on Friday. The joint operation between the Metro Police’s Dog Unit and the police’s Crime Intelligence gatherers saw the authorities pounce on the Athburg Walk house after receiving several complaints from locals who suspected the house was being used for illegal activities. Yolanda Faro, the deputy chief of the Metro Police, says the stash was found in various parts of the house. “The officers spent hours scouring the house, and made a substantial seizure thanks to the sniffer dogs, who are able to trace drugs no matter where it’s hidden,” she says. A total of 21 units of heroin, seven cocaine rocks, 148 tik straws, 20 tik lollies and R15 823

in cash were seized. Three men were arrested at the scene and charged with drug possession. They appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday, but People’s Post was unable to confirm the outcome of the case at our time of going to print. Most successful searches are thanks to information received by residents “fed up” with the drug trade in their areas, Faro says. “The anonymous tip-offs yield results 80% of the time. The people who live around these drug dens are the ones who we need to blow the whistle so that the law can take its course and dealers can be brought to book. The residents are the ones who know what is happening in their areas.” Faro adds that suspicious vehicles in the area were also pulled over and routine searches were conducted during the course of the day.

Wall crushes man, injures two TAMMY PETERSEN

THE death of a construction worker who died while working at a factory in Philippi on Tuesday, is being probed by a private investigator. Warrant Officer Ettienne Conradie, spokesperson for Philippi police, confirms that three men were digging a trench next to the outer boundary wall at Busy Corner Meat Wholesalers at the corner of Duik and Springfield roads when tragedy struck. It is understood that while they hollowed out the earth, the wall suddenly toppled on top of the trio. Two of the men were seriously injured and were taken to Groote Schuur Hospital with head, pelvis and shoulder injuries. The third man, believed to be in his late 20s, died at the scene.

It took rescue workers more than three hours to remove him from under the wall. Springfield informal settlement resident Florina Plaatjies, who witnessed the incident, says she was “deeply shocked” at what happened. “It was such a tragedy. You could see he was a young man and to die at such a young age is heartbreaking. There are dangers involved in any job, but who would have thought that something like this could happen to someone who was simply digging a trench? This is absolutely shocking.” Conradie says an inquest docket was opened, and no foul play is suspected. The human resource manager at the meat business referred queries to a private investigator probing the incident. People’s Post was unable to reach him at the time of going to print.

THE Pick n Pay Argus Cycle Tour taking place on Sunday 13 March is much more than a cycling event. This year there’s a team of 75 riders cycling for The Chaeli Campaign in Plumstead. Some are raising funds for specific individuals with disabilities and others for any number of current Chaeli Campaign programmes. Mukhtar Lee and Tracy Cohen, who both have significant physical disabilities and cannot ride conventional bicycles, will be riding for The Chaeli Campaign. Lee is a second year marketing student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Bellville and an avid sportsman, playing tennis, basketball, table tennis and pool. He started ballroom and Latin American dancing at the age of nine. Lee has spastic diaplegia, a form of cerebral palsy that affects the muscles in the lower limbs, and uses crutches to help him walk. Last year Cohen raised sponsorship as a ghost rider for The Chaeli Campaign and assists with fundraising, social media updates and administrative duties at The Chaeli Campaign. She has cerebral palsy and walks with difficulty, yet has the passion and drive to make

Residents claim the man demanded “hundreds of thousands of rands” to release her, but police were unable to confirm this. The man’s brother phoned the police at 10:00 on Friday morning asking for assistance to take the suspect to a hospital, as he was refusing medication. Warrant Officer Ettienne Conradie, spokesperson for Philippi police, says when police arrived at the scene the man hurled abuse at his brother and the officers, refusing to go with either of them. “He then ran into the house, where his two-year-old daughter was, and said he was going to kill himself and the child, before slamming the security gate,” he says. The man is believed to have caused extensive damage inside the house. The mother of the toddler was not home at the time. As locals started to mill around while trying to figure out what was happening, police called for back-up and hostage negotiators, who spent two hours trying to reason with the man. The child’s mother stood outside crying

when she arrived home, and despite the man’s demands that she be allowed inside the house, police refused to let her enter. At about 12:45 the situation was defused when the officers offered the man food, which was put on the ground outside the house. When he bent to pick it up, the officers grabbed him, took the baby and handcuffed him. The 35-year-old was arrested and taken to GF Jooste Hospital for treatment and evaluation. The little girl was unharmed. Neighbours say the situation was “chilling”, as the man has a history of violent behaviour. “I thought he was really going to do it,” one woman says. “He was in trouble with the law before so who says who wouldn’t do it again? To threaten a defenceless child is a heartless and cowardly thing to do. Hulle moet hom opsluit!” People’s Post attempted to gain comment from the man’s family but no-one was available at the time of going to print. Conradie says the man was charged with kidnapping, extortion, malicious damage to property, domestic violence and assault with intent to inflict serious bodily harm. The suspect is currently receiving treatment at a mental health facility. Conradie adds that it is unclear whether the man will appear in court owing to his mental condition.

‘How are we supposed to live like this?’ Hanover Park residents wait for the city to do maintenance work on council flats for more than three years TAMMY PETERSEN

L

EAKING toilets, broken doors and cracked ceilings are only some of the maintenance issues plaguing council home tenants in Hanover Park. They have been waiting for the City of Cape Town to repair the damage for up to three years and are fearing for their health. As the multi-million rand triple-storey flat upgrade continues to be rolled out, locals living in council houses and maisonettes claim their repairs are being neglected, forcing them to live in unsanitary and dangerous conditions. Anne Sampear, of Rywood Walk, says family members visited the rent office about 10 times last year to report their broken toilet. Sampear explains that hundreds of litres of water have already been wasted while they wait for the maintenance men to come knocking. “This is a disgusting situation. We have to use a bucket to flush the toilet because it overflows and floods the toilet when we do it the normal way. “The cistern is faulty and we have to scoop the water out of it to keep it from running over. It’s easier to use a bucket!” The bathroom floor has been damaged to such an extent that the linoleum had to be removed as the floor never dries. “It has a mouldy smell and there is so much water damage in here. It’s like you keep complaining but nothing gets done. What’s the point if you are just ignored?” A few doors away, Tanya Wessels places handfuls of rat poison in front of her door. She has been plagued by the pests because her door frames and doors are so rotten, the door no longer fits. “At night I see them slipping into the house through the gaps. It angers me to no end because I have been complaining about it for three years and nothing has been done. How am I supposed to live like this? One kick and this door will just fall over. This is dangerous and morsig, man!” But this is not her only problem. Her shower has been broken for two years, forcing her to wash her three children in a plastic tub. “Why do I have to live like this when I pay my rent? Every month council expects payment but they don’t do their duty. I’m tired of walking up and down to the rent office where they promise to fix things but they never come. It’s ridiculous.”

Farieda Pierce also had a frightening experience last week when one of the electricity sockets in her kitchen burst into flames. “This is the second time that this has happened. Two months ago, the same plug caught fire and after we stopped the burning, we reported it to the rent office. We are still waiting for them to come,” she says. While she fixed her own toilet recently after fearing that the cistern would fall off and hurt someone, she is also waiting for council to have a look at her bedroom ceiling, which has a long, clearly visible crack in it from corner to corner. “When the people upstairs walk in their bedroom, the dust and sand falls on my floor. It’s scary because you don’t know when it will cave in. One of these days the ceiling is going to collapse and I’ll find the neighbours in my house!” Errol Davids, the vice chairperson of the Hanover Park Civic Association, says the organisation started going door-to-door last month and has already accumulated more than 500 complaints of unresolved maintenance issues. “All the aggrieved residents were able to show us their printouts, which they received from the rent office. They date back as far as 2008, with one woman waiting since 1994 for the floor of her home to be fixed. How can the landlord treat its tenants like this? The city has a legal obligation to the people to resolve their complaints as soon as possible.” Grace Blouw, the city’s manager for Existing Housing, says people who claim they have been waiting for maintenance for a very long time, should visit the housing office and make inquiries. While the housing office has capacity problems, this is not the cause of delays in response. “Tenants are issued with notification numbers which they can use as a reference when inquiring about work not done,” she says. Blouw says fresh water supply leaks, blockages and non-functioning toilets as well as no electrical supply and sparking electrical connections receive the highest priority. “If there are instances where these are not attended to timeously, this needs to be reported to the housing office. Requests for maintenance are prioritised in terms of urgency and response times vary from hours to weeks, in terms of the perceived urgency.” She adds that there are two types of maintenance: reactive maintenance deals with day to day complaints and planned maintenance refers to problem areas which have been identified where a contractor is appointed to do the work.

Ten in custody after botched robbery TAMMY PETERSEN

“IMPRESSIVE” and “extremely efficient” are words the staff of Ross Demolition Second Hand Yard in Lansdowne are using to describe the provincial police’s actions after they managed to thwart a planned robbery at the site on Thursday. Ten men were arrested after a high speed chase saw all the suspects nabbed in less than an hour. On Thursday at 08:40, an attentive resident spotted four suspicious-looking men at business premises in Induland Crescent and immediately phoned the police. Four of the suspects entered the offices, posing as clients, whereafter a white Golf pulled up outside. When police arrived, they noticed three men running down

the road, says Captain FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson. “They were pursued and arrested and two firearms were found in their possession. Three vehicles – a white Fiat Punto, a white VW Golf and a white Venture – sped away but the police caught

up with them and pulled them over,” he explains. Two firearms and ammunition, totalling 21 live rounds, were found in the vehicles. Three pistols and one revolver, with serial numbers removed, were seized. Ross Demolition’s Annette Bothma said she had never seen police officers “moving so fast”. “They were absolutely fantastic. They chased after them and

got them and it was amazing to see them do such a great job. There were even choppers!” she says. This would have been the third time the business was hit in its 14 years on the premises, Bothma continues. “We were robbed by armed men in May 2005 and November 2007. “We have every security measure imaginable on site, ranging from surveillance cameras to a security guard,” she adds. The 10 suspects, aged between 27 and 48, appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and attempted armed robbery. People’s Post was unable to ascertain the outcome of the case as the docket had not yet returned from court at our time of going to print.

The championship will end with an official prizegiving and promises great cash and consolation prizes. Entry forms are available from the Vangate Mall marketing department. XACTLY why the City Council decided to table its draft budget on the day the national budget was presented in Parliament is difficult to understand. Cynics would say it was a case of dumping bad news on the public while their attention was on Pravin Gordhan and the upheaval in North Africa and the Middle East. Bad news? Well, every single increase announced is above the present inflation rate – and that makes it bad news for most of us. On the other hand, it could have been worse, as the increases are certainly lower than they were last year. But one would expect this to be the case a few months before the municipal elections. My own view is that the City bosses think they have done a good job and they certainly don’t see it as bad news. They just want to get it out of the way before the electioneering begins in earnest. So let’s look at the facts. Rates are to go up by 5.9%. Electricity will go up by nearly 20%; water and sanitation charges will go up by 8% (and 10% for each of the two years following the election) and refuse collection fees will go up by 5.5%. And the cost of running the City (the operating costs) will rise by

more than 12%. All this while the current inflation rate is under 4%! Last year we had a 14% increase in operating expenditure; an average increase of 24.6% in electricity tariffs; an 18% increase for refuse collection; a 10% increase for water and sanitation and a theoretical 9.3% increase on the average rates bill. So the budget may be less painful than last year’s one, but that is little cause for comfort to people who do not get the kind of pay increases the City Council has handed out in the last few years. Mr Gordhan told us in the national budget that the cost of public service salaries has doubled in the last five years. Whether or not municipal salaries were included is uncertain, but municipal workers and councillors have done pretty well. Perhaps well enough to lose touch with the economic realities that beset the rest of us. While the private sector has had to endure wage freezes, retrenchments, reduced working hours for reduced wages and other desperate measures to survive the recession, the public service has prospered. The bitter irony is that the private sector pays the taxes to keep the public services going in the style to which they have become accustomed. How much longer can we afford to finance these growing bureaucracies that are not exactly noted

Confiscated drugs and cash.

“Four liquor-related cases were opened; three for dealing in liquor without a licence and one for contravention of the Liquor Act by the licence holder. “Four people were arrested in the four cases. Police focused a lot on liquor and drug related offences as this at times contributes to domestic related cases that have been opened.” He says various stop and searches were set up and 14 people were arrested for driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. “From Monday 28 February until Friday 4 March another 24 cases were opened for possession of drugs. In one case officers received information regarding drug dealing. “A search warrant was executed and one person has been arrested and two parcels of dagga and 19 dagga stoppe were confis-

A cut above the rest SOME of Cape Town’s most loved personalities participated in Media24’s Cancer Association of South Africa Shavathon campaign held on Thursday 3 March at the Naspers Centre in Cape Town. Liezel van der Westhuizen and Kia Johnson, both presenters on SABC 3’s breakfast show, Expresso and on Kfm 94.5, sprayed their hair in front of staffers, while singers Loukmaan Adams

and Byron Clarke, as well as the Santos football players also participated to show their solidarity with cancer survivors. This year’s Shavathon coincides with Cansa’s 80th birthday. Participating staffers donated R50 for a haircut and R25 for a hairspray. They were served by professional hairdressers from Salon Eve and Steve from 09:00 to 14:30 in the foyer of the Naspers Centre.

for their productivity? Perhaps we are better off in Cape Town, but that is no reason to sit back and be satisfied. There is every reason to demand greater efficiency and better value for our money. . Tony Robinson is a veteran journalist and commentator on civic affairs in Cape Town. His columns, “City Diary” in the Cape Times and later “Civic Diary” in the city’s first free newspapers, won the Sanlam national award for the best column in a community newspaper in 1993 – and some unusual praise from the judges, with one of them remarking, “I would hate to be a councillor in your town!”. He has a wide range of interests, which will be reflected in future columns.

Police patrol pays off TOTAL of 24 people have appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on drug possession charges, following a police operation from Friday 25 to Monday 28 February. “Drugs that were found were Mandrax tablets, dagga, heroin, tik and an undisclosed amount of cash,” says Warrant Officer Llewelyn Lakay, Manenberg police spokesperson. “On Friday police also received information regarding a stolen motor vehicle in Vanguard Estate. A search warrant was obtained and executed in Calcium Road. Officers recovered a stolen Mercedes Kompressor which was stolen in Goodwood.” Three men in their 20s were arrested and appeared in court. Lakay says during the week, the section dealing with liquor, firearms and second hand goods conducted several operations.

cated,” says Lakay. “Three cases were opened for dealing in drugs. In one case a 19year-old woman was arrested in Anysberg Road, Heideveld. She had eight units of tik in her possession.” He says a licensed firearm was also confiscated in the area. “A 22-year-old man was arrested and police will investigate this in terms of the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000.” People’s Post could not establish the outcome of the court details. “The management of Manenberg SAPS would like to thank all people that gave information that led to arrests. Community members are once again urged to come forward with information,” says Lakay. To report any crime call the police station on (021) 699-9400 or (021) 699-9454. Learning about glaucoma WORLD Glaucoma Week – a global initiative of the World Glaucoma Association – runs this week until Saturday 12 March. Glaucoma refers to a range of diseases that affect the optic nerve. This year the campaign focuses on the importance of screening family members of glaucoma patients, because a high percentage of their children will also get glaucoma. Glaucoma has no warning signs. It is mostly painless, and therefore 50% of glaucoma patients do not know they have the disease. The cause of glaucoma is still not known. However, patients with elevated eye pressure are at risk of developing structural and functional damage of their optic nerves. Untreated pressure elevation can lead to blindness. Early detection and treatment with eye drops can prevent func-

tional loss to the nerve and visual function. The glaucoma tests are painless. Most types of glaucoma are chronic, which means long-term treatment. Since there are no known preventative measures it is important to have your eyes tested, especially if you have a family member with glaucoma. Other risk factors for glaucoma include: increased age, shortsightedness, high or low blood pressure, long-term steroid treatment and eye injuries. Protecting quality of vision enhances quality of life in every glaucoma patient. For more information call (021) 426-2200, if you live in the city; in the Atlantic seaboard call (021) 434-4500 or (021) 4395605; in Milnerton call (021) 5528115; or call (021) 785-5661, (021) 7126997 or (021) 715-8015 if you live in the southern suburbs.

Big Walk indeed!

ONE STEP AT A TIME: Gaboedien (64) and Ra bia (64) Manuel from Hanover Park enjoy the scenery as they head to ward the finish line.

VER 20 000 people participated in Cape Town’s annual 10 km Big Walk on Sunday. The 1UP Cash and Carry Big Walk, presented by Spice Mecca, was in aid of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and Islamic Library. A cheque of R125 000 was handed to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital on Sunday. Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato pulled the starting gun trigger just before 08:00. Dr Ivan Meyer, MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport, was spotted among the Big Walk participants walking along the beachfront to the Green Point track. Seen here are just some of the thousands of people who enjoyed the glorious weather and the healthy outdoors on Sunday. . People’s Post is the print media sponsor of the Big Walk.

Bumpy ride WESTERN CAPE MEC for Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, boarded a train from Khayelitsha to Cape Town last week to experience for himself the troubles that frustrate regular commuters. Fortunately for Metrorail, which is thought to have been unaware of the MEC’s trip, everything ran smoothly, aside from the fairly empty peak-hour train arriving at its destination seven minutes late. In reports, Carlisle dubbed the journey “excellent” when compared to conditions on the same line a year ago. But while Carlisle’s efforts should be commended, his single novelty rail trip cannot compare to the everyday horrors that mostly poor commuters are forced to endure. For them there are no alternatives, and the recent 41c per litre increase in fuel costs may see their numbers swell in future. The flood of complaints from frustrated rail commuters seems never-ending. Last year, when Metrorail increased ticket prices and cited Eskom’s increase in electricity tariffs, imported materials used on the railway, labour, and the absence of automated ticket sales as reasons for the price hike, they also promised to raise service standards with the introduction of better facilities at stations just in time for the World Cup. But all too often commuters still find themselves stuck in overcrowded trains during peak-hour, targeted by criminals, and at times are even forced to disembark and walk to nearby stations alongside railway tracks because trains suddenly grind to a halt without any explanation. To the average commuter it would appear that Metrorail shows no respect to its customer. Carslisle has promised to meet with Metrorail to gain answers on faulty doors, security problems and generally poor conditions, demanding of Metrorail consistent service delivery. National Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndbele has promised 8 000 new coaches for the rail transport network, 1 000 of which should be sent to the Western Cape by 2015. One can only hope there is light at the end of the tunnel. Until then, commuters face a long road ahead.

Your SMSes . If you do not like the DA then move to the Northern Cape and we will see how quickly you would move back. Vote DA. Eddie, Manenberg . Is there anyone out there who has not been paid by the IEC yet ? It is not fair! I am still waiting to be paid. Anonymous . Trevor Manuel is right: Manyi is a racist. Why should our coloured people leave the Western Cape when we were born here? We have rights too. Fed up . What’s Jimmy Manyi’s problem? He must be colour(ed) blind! Lewis, Lansdowne . About the outcry over the Kuli Roberts column which appeared in the Sunday World on 27 February. I respond by stating: let’s break out of our moulds by distinguishing ourselves according to boxed labels.

Firstly, I am a human being and am part of a human race as history has taught us. Secondly, I am a South African citizen and call myself a Homo Sapien. Glorya Alfreds . With reference to the SMS about the DA. You are voting for the wrong party! They don’t care. As long as they get your vote and the vote of others like you. DA supporter . What has the ANC done but live in the past? Improve our health and education system, etc before anyone points a finger at the DA. F.K. . I am shocked at how the traffic department wastes money. We have one car and received two notifications for licence renewals. There is no control over money that we could use for fixing roads. . My name is Clive Jacobs and I found out that I’m very sick and could die of this illness. I lost contact with my wife Beverly and son Mickaylo. I want them to phone me on 076 852 7023.

Men need to get involved I AM a 64-year-old pensioner who has raised my grandson alone since he was three. He is now 14 years old and in Grade 9. There have been tough times, but, with God’s grace, we made it through. I became involved in community work last year. I had training at a nonprofit organisation (NPO) in Heideveld on projects

such as home-based care, orphaned children and abusive men. Becoming involved in community brings out positive energy in oneself, but sadly so few men are involved in community work. At the training with other NPOs there were 27 ladies and only three men in attendance. In the Men Who Abuse

project I could meet and talk to men, old and young, about the problem in our society concerning women and child abuse. They were positive in their views, and knew of problems in their own neighbourhood. So men, be involved in your community and see how much more you will appreciate your own family.

The above-mentioned projects came to a halt, due to a lack of funds. But I hope in future with horrors such as HIV, drug abuse, gangsterism, women and child abuse, more NPOs would attain men in their projects to become visible men in our community and take responsibility. Thanks to Community Aids Action network for the experience. JAMES Manenberg

Zuma should have delivered a tongue lashing WELL done to Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel, who I commend for chastising President Jacob Zuma’s chief spokesman, Jimmy Manyi, for his racist remarks regarding the demographic density of “coloureds” in the Western Cape. Manuel’s vehement reprimand of Manyi illustrates that members of the ANC led government are not all yesmen.

What sparked off Manyi in the first instance? Has the seemingly pro-DA “coloured” vote in the Western Cape fuelled the utterances by Manyi? Surely this was not a case of cheap politicking before the forthcoming local government elections? It would have given the ANC much more credibility had President Zuma himself delivered the tongue-lashing in respect of Manyi’s alleged

racist remarks. What was Manyi thinking before making the controversial utterances about migrating “coloured” people to other areas in South Africa “where they are needed”? A logical conclusion is blatant racism, or perhaps even “ethnic cleansing”, indicative of the dark days of apartheid and Nazi Germany! Manyi has been reported to have allegedly made racist remarks about Indians in

the past. Let’s see what punishment will be meted out to the embattled Manyi. Not a feeble slap on the wrist I pray, but it is ironic that in a turn of events that the perpetrator, Manyi, has retaliated against the lambasting by laying a complaint against fellow compatriot, Manuel! The plot thickens. MARK KLEINSCHMIDT Kenwyn

Malay choirs rock Cape Town TAURIQ HASSEN

THE first event for the Cape Male Choir Board rocked the Athlone Civic Centre last week. Audiences flocked into the civic centre to watch choirs compete for a place in the Champions Cup to be held later this month. Choirs were greeted to a sold-out venue, with approximately 1 000 people in attendance. Ebrahim Hull, president of the board, was delighted at the turnout of the event. “The choirs kept the audience entertained and they were ecstatic, which proves that the first event was a complete success,” Hull explained. The board is integrated with the Keep The Dream Malay Choir Forum, which assists struggling choirs in finding their feet to perform on the big stage. The forum was established last year. In the first event, which took place on Friday 25 February, Silver Sounds Singk-

oor walked away the winners, with KenFac finishing off in second place. The following evening, it was the turn of Capetonians Singkoor to blow the crowd away with their melodic performance, as they finished in first place, with Jordan Sporting Club coming in second. He added that the rest of the teams taking part in the competition would be competing in the Challenge Cup on Friday 11 March. Each choir stands a chance to win a spot in the much anticipated Champions Cup, which takes place on Friday 25 March at the Athlone Civic Centre. Choirs which finished first and second in the most recent competition automatically qualify to compete against Cape Town’s finest.. Tickets can be purchased from the choirs, as well as at the door. Adults pay R35, children between four and 14 pay R20 and pensioners will pay R25. For more information on the events contact Hull on 073 651 9989.

Twenty-five years of giving REYANA STEYN

IN CELEBRATION of 25 years of service, the Islamic Social and Welfare Association (ISWA) will be hosting a gala event at Cape Town College in Kromboom Road on Saturday 12 March. The anniversary also marks the start of a five-year project for ISWA, which is situated in Belgravia Estate, to acquire their own premises and develop a learning centre for their school. ISWA offers counselling services, social intervention strategies, further education and training, poverty alleviation (through educational subsidies) and youth and children’s development programmes. These services are offered to people of all religions. ISWA’s doors were first opened in 1986 by Nurounihar Minton and Fowzia Ryklief, who are still involved with the organisation. “The two women saw the need for trauma counselling and the non-profit organisation was born during the apartheid era. Families were dying from abuse and drugs and ISWA decided they must do something as the communities were disintegrating,” says Rushdy Siers, the CEO of ISWA. “As they continued to counsel people throughout the years they saw the need to do more to help the communities and started a few projects.” In 1987, ISWA rallied to support the international call for the rights of children, becoming one of many organisations which rallied to support the Rainbow Children’s Day campaign. In 1994, ISWA alone carried on the tradition of the Rainbow Children’s Day. The campaign came to an end in 2004, when the weekend was disrupted by a severe storm which hit Cape Town. A week later an appeal was made to the Great Moscow Circus and a special show was staged for more than 1 000 children and their caregivers. In 2004, the Minton School of Development was launched to help children. At the school they offer two-year courses in project management for counselling, parale-

With ISWA’s formation of the Sing-Osman Education Fund, the burden of pupils who want to attend the school has been made lighter, as they receive a bursary and pay only R13 000 instead of the usual R23 000. ISWA has also introduced a Learn Self-Esteem Forum. “We have recognised that many things influence people; the circumstances they live in, drug abuse and family disintegration and we need to look at ways to help in the home, school, working and social environment,” says Siers. He says the aim is to reach thousands of people for the next 25 years and make a difference in their lives. “We are in talks with schools to include this programme in their curriculum.” Mirza Parker, the gala-event organiser, says he is planning a “great” event with a lineup that includes local talents; Ganief Parker and guests, the George Werner Band, Little Giants, Emily Bruce and flamenco duo Wathiq Hussein and Rajissi. Book a ticket, at R300 per person, by calling Mirza Parker on 071 384 1237.

Arendse gets tough SAFA Cape Town was forced to adjourn a general council meeting in Old Crossroads on Sunday after two ineligible LFA Crossroads members refused to leave the meeting. The situation became heated when Safa CT president Norman Arendse told Mike Siheke and Mlungisi Bleki from Crossroads to leave as they “were not accredited to attend”. Siheke and Bleki both served as president of LFA Crossroads

before a task team headed by Safa CT vice-president Eric Gum was appointed to take over the administration. Arendse said yesterday it would have been “disrespectful to the accredited task team” if he tolerated the presence of Siheke and Bleki at the meeting. Arendse said only accredited delegates will be allowed to attend the adjourned meeting on Sunday 13 March at Athlone Stadium, starting at 10:00. .
