Killed in her home Alleged attacker appears in M’Plain court for a formal bail application MELISSA PAPIER
W
HAT was once a home where fond memories were made was turned into a murder scene after the killing of an elderly woman. Yvonne Paulsen (66) was found in a pool of blood in her Chrysler Street home in Beacon Valley last Monday. Her body was discovered by her nephew, Grant Titus, after he returned from work at 17:30. It is understood that Paulsen was found naked with her throat slit, lying in a pool of blood on her kitchen floor. The house had been ransacked, but police could not confirm if anything was stolen. Captain Mugelaine van der Vendt, Mitchell’s Plain Police spokesperson, says a 38-year-old man was arrested the next day (Tuesday 5 April) in connection with the murder. The man was arrested at a house in Cadillac Street, Beacon Valley, as a “result of good investigation”. He appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain
Magistrate’s Court last Friday. The case was postponed and the man is appearing today for a formal bail application. The victim lived right next door to the Metro Police headquarters in Beacon Valley. People’s Post visited the house last week and again yesterday but found it locked with noone at home. There was a sombre feeling among neighbours about what had transpired. Driving through Chrysler Street, one is met by a peaceful, calm and serene atmosphere. At the neat peach-coloured house, a camping chair and blossoming flower pots greet visitors. People’s Post approached some of the neighbours to ask them how this murder had affected them. Some were extra cautious and refused to open their gates to talk to the media. The ones who reluctantly ventured comments expressed shock at the killing. Speculation by residents in the neighbourhood is that Paulsen knew her attacker as “she would not allow strangers into her home”. Many remembered Paulsen as a

“kind, loving person who was always willing to help, with a smile”. A woman, who asked not to be named, says it was shocking that Paulsen was killed in her own home. “This was the first time that something like this has happened. She was very safety-conscious and was very careful as to who she let into her house. “What’s scary is that this could have happened early the morning as she was only discovered later the evening. “Everyone is paranoid and have tightened up security at their homes as this could have happened to anyone in the street,” she said. “At present we can’t say what the motive was for the attack. awaiting the results of the post-mortem to establish the cause of death,” Van Der Vent says. The police could not comment or confirm whether or not Paulsen had been sexually assaulted, adding that the incident was not drug or gang-related. “There are no details of the investigation indicating that the incident was gang or drug related. The investigation is ongoing.” Reva Fortune, spokesperson for the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum (CPF), says she was “shocked” and “saddened” by Paulsen’s murder. “Families who have elderly loved ones living alone must pay more attention to their loved ones;

as they are vulnerable and easily become targets for criminals. “The area where she lived is very quiet, with neighbours not being aware of what happened in the area. Residents need to be more neighbourly towards each other and look out for each other,” Fortune said. Paulsen was buried on Saturday from the New Apostolic Church in Eastridge. Fresh eyes solve murder case
Arrests made by Mitchell’s Plain Police officers lead to successful prosecution
MELISSA PAPIER
A DETECTIVE who was assigned to a seven-year-old murder recently has cracked the case and arrested a 24-yearold man. At 04:00 on Sunday 7 March 2004, a 14year-old came home to hear her mother screaming for help in their house in Mandalay, Mitchell’s Plain. She ran to her mother’s best friend nearby for help but was too late to assist her mother, a 46-year-old woman who was later found stabbed with several knives and a garden fork. Captain Mugeliane van der Vendt, spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Police station, said: “The police were called out to the scene and a murder case was investigated. For years the investigation went on but no leads were found to trace the suspect. “At one stage a reward of R30 000 was of-
fered for information in an attempt to trace the suspect – again without any results.” On Friday 25 March the case was again booked out and Detective Warrant Officer Pieter Joubert was assigned to it. “The detective studied the docket and on Saturday 2 April, Detective Warrant Officer Joubert found a source with information. “A connection was made with the source and a meeting was scheduled for later that day. At 11:00 the same day, a 24-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman were interviewed.” “The same day at 15:00 (Saturday) the man was detained and the woman questioned in connection with the murder.” On Sunday 3 April at 23:00, after further questioning, the man made a formal confession. He appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court for his first appearance. The case was postponed until 11 April. Van der Vent said despite all the negative publicity that the police often face, officers at the Mitchell’s Plain police have gone beyond the call of duty recently, resulting in a number of successful convictions. “All these successful arrests and convictions are as a result of the hard work by the officers investigating the cases. We acknowledge their work and commend them
for the effort that they put into the cases,” she said. The case was postponed until 20 April for further investigation. Van Der Vent highlighted other successes by the station: . On Wednesday 15 September 2010 a case of fraud was reported at the police station. “In this case a 55-year-old woman represented herself as a nursing trainer who would provide training to students to become nurses. Her fees were stipulated. Eight clients signed up with her and paid their fees into a bank account.” The case docket was booked out to Detective Constable Donovan Samson, and in his investigation it was discovered that the bank account was registered in the name of the woman. Through a thorough investigation and positive leads that were followed, she was arrested in Langa on Sunday 3 April at 14:10. She appeared in court on Tuesday 5 April and the outcome of the first appearance is still unknown. . On Tuesday 15 February, Athule Poni was sentenced to 10 years for robbery, following an incident on 8 August last year. . On Thursday 3 February, Malusi Sheppard Simani was sentenced to 15 years for
murder, after an incident on 8 July 2007. . On Wednesday 2 March, Eslin Cupido was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder. The incident took place on 12 November 2003. . On Wednesday 9 March, Kashief Kafuka and Naziem Oostendorp were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for robbery. The incident took place on 22 July last year. . On Wednesday 16 March, Shaun Arendse was sentenced to five years for robbery. The incident took place on 5 December last year. . Friday 1 April, Carl Cloete was sentenced to three years’ community service for murder. Cloete was 17-years-old at the time of the incident on 26 February last year. He stabbed Adenaan Hendricks (19). The successful conviction was made by Detective Warrant Officer Trevor Nash. Reva Fortune, spokesperson for the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum (CPF), says she was glad that some of the arrests have led to convictions. “I am glad that the justice department is playing their role. So many times cases are withdrawn and court proceedings prolonged, which leaves the victims of crime despondent. I am glad that cases are beingdealt with speedily,” Fortune said.

‘Massive’ arrears protest action planned TAMMY PETERSEN
THOUSANDS of people are expected to take part in a massive protest which will see residents from 12 suburbs march to the Cape Town Civic Centre under one banner on Tuesday 26 April to demand the scrapping of all municipal arrears for people living in the city’s impoverished areas. The decision to protest was made by Communities for Social Change (CSC), a coordinating structure of civic organisations representing Hanover Park, Athlone, Manenberg, Mitchell’s Plain, Hout Bay, Heideveld, Lavender Hill, Lotus River, Ottery, Grassy Park, Elsies River and Leonsdale. The decision comes after meetings held with City of Cape Town officials failed to resolve issues concerning the poor, says Mario Wanza, the organiser of the CSC. Representatives from the CSC met Mayor Dan Plato and City officials yesterday to discuss their demands. These include the halting of evictions due to illegal occupations,
debt and anti-social behaviour, a call for the scrapping of municipal arrears and the handing over of council-owned units to people who have been paying rent for years. “What upset us is that there was no investigation into the validity of our requests and no committee set up to review our demands. “The City just flat-out refused what we were asking for, and we will respond by doing what’s best for the people and protesting. Ons gaan Kaap toe.” The action comes two months after 3 000 residents from Manenberg took to the streets armed with posters asking the City to lower their rent and write off their rental backlog. Wanza says people have been paying rent for over 30 years and they should be given ownership of the council properties. Also under the banner of the CSC, more than 500 Hanover Park residents took to the streets last month and delivered a memorandum to the local rent office demanding that their arrears be scrapped. One of the area coordinators for CSC, Errol Davids, says people are becoming involved in the “move-
ment” because they are desperate and “over their heads in debt”. Davids, who is the deputy chairperson of the Hanover Park Civic Association, says the organisation is in “total support” of the planned protest, adding that they will start distributing pamphlets within the week. Two weeks ago, Mitchell’s Plain residents expressed their concerns about the scrapping of water arrears when they burnt a cardboard coffin containing hundreds of warning letters issued by the City. The coffin was loaded onto a hearse and taken from Mitchell’s Plain Town Centre to the Beacon Valley Rent Office where it was burnt in front of cheering protestors. The CSC’s Mitchell’s Plain coordinator, Sulyman Stellenboom, says another march will take place in Mitchell’s Plain on 21 April when they will return to the subcouncil office and request feedback on their demand for the removal of water management devices behind the incorrect readings being taken from water meters, leading to high bills. “This City has no respect for the poor and is not taking this matter

We are representing the people and although we try to engage with the officials towards finding a solution, they are not coming to the party.” Plato, who was handed a copy of the pamphlet which the CSC has been distributing to invite people to take part, declined to comment on the planned protest, saying only that “it’s their right to march”. However, he says the action seems to be “politically motivated” and that the CSC is making “one de-
day on charges relating to possession of a unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Voegt said. In a separate incident the same day, at 15:00, the police arrested two men for possession of drugs. Voegt said the arrest came after officers spotted the suspicious-looking men in a vehicle, while on vehicle patrol duties in Korfbal Street, Beacon Valley. “When the officers tried to stop the vehicle, one of the suspects jumped out and ran into a yard in the street. Police managed to arrest both suspects and confiscated 28 packets of tik, eight units of heroin and nine-anda-half Mandrax tablets in their possession,” he said. The men, 19 and 21 years old, appeared in court yesterday on charges relating to possession of drugs. Later the same day at 23:00, while doing routine patrols in Morgenster Street, Beacon Valley, the police stopped and searched a man, confiscating 20 packets of tik found in his possession. The 28-year-old man was arrested and appeared in court yesterday on a charge relating to possession of drugs. People’s Post was unable to gain the outcomes of the court cases. Residents have mixed feelings about City service MELISSA PAPIER
MITCHELL’S PLAIN, Khayelitsha and Klipfontein have given the City of Cape Town its lowest ratings in the latest customer satisfaction survey. The results of the fourth annual survey were released by the City last week. The survey found that 53% of Mitchell’s Plain residents interviewed were satisfied with the City’s performance, 52% of those in Khayelitsha felt the same and Klipfontein came in at 46%. However, some Mitchell’s Plain residents have expressed their satisfaction with most of the City’s service delivery. Jean Davids, from Westridge, says she is happy with service delivery in her area. “There has been a good improvement in the area. If I do lodge a complaint, it gets attended to immediately and if it can’t be solved, someone from the council will give me feedback on the matter,” she said. She added that lots of improvements has been made in the area. However the lanes still remain a problem. “The lanes are where criminals hang out and use as their escape route when conducting criminal activities. If the dangerous lanes get closed these problems will be addressed.” Gairo Abbass, a Lentegeur resident, says she is pleased with how things were taking shape in her area. “The ward councillor in Lentegeur is very active in her community and assists the community where she can. Parks in the area have been beautified and streets have been cleaned and if there are com-
plaints they are addressed immediately.” Subcouncil chairperson Councillor Natalie Bent, said she could not comment “on the issue at this time” and referred all queries to the City’s strategic information department. Overall, 62% of Cape Town residents interviewed said the City’s performance was good, very good or excellent compared to last year’s 50%. The same percentage rated the City as good, very good or excellent in fulfilling its role as a public service provider (which is up from 56% last year) and 66% rate their level of trust in the City as fairly strong, very strong or extremely strong, which is the same as last year. Marian Nieuwoudt, Mayoral Committee member for Planning and Environment, says the survey has become an essential means of understanding how citizens perceive the services rendered by the City’s departments. She says that in October and November last year, 3 000 face-to-face interviews were conducted with residents of Cape Town and 700 interviews were conducted telephonically with businesses in Cape Town. The survey found that essential services – refuse collection, sewerage and sanitation, stormwater, electricity and street lighting – continue to be a relative area of strength for the City, except for perceptions around affordable electricity, over which the City has limited control. “Water services, previously one of the highest-rated services and still with relatively high scores, are show-
DID YOU KNOW that Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, is a former journalist and anti-apartheid activist, and famously exposed the truth
ing some decreases.” Health is a key concern for the City and scores remain average to low, especially waiting times at clinics, but these services are important to residents. Housing scores have shown some improvement but are still low. Poor perceptions of these services are impacting negatively on how the City is rated overall. Housing is complex and not solely the responsibility of the City. “Perceptions of the mayor and of senior city management in dealing with City issues have improved. This is viewed as very important as these scores contribute strongly to overall ratings of service delivery in the City,” she said. Residents’ priorities remain job creation, crime prevention and fighting corruption. Providing housing and having primary health care are becoming increasingly important. “The City has noted this rating and is positive that this perception will change as municipal spending continues to increase.” “It is good to note that the overall performance trends over the past four years have been positive,” she says. The survey was commissioned by the strategy and planning directorate and conducted by TNS Research Surveys.

Choirs battle it out Things can be much worse for the Silver Fez TONY ROBINSON
MOST of the people who are raging against the idea of exploring for shale gas in the Karoo know very little about the technology and what Sasol has called its “game changing” potential. In fact, most of the knowledge in circulation has come from those strongly opposed to “fracking”. Public relations companies have even been retained to blacken the picture and whip up emotions to a point approaching hysteria. They have plenty of material to work with. In the early days of fracking there were disasters, most of them the result of wild cat operations. But the technology has improved and in responsible hands it might even be acceptable in some circumstances. So it is easy to understand the fears in circulation. I grew up in the Karoo and I know that water gives land its value. Take away the water or contaminate it and one is left with worthless desert. In a drought, a good borehole is the only thing that stands between a farmer and financial ruin. It is an emotional
The Silver Fez trophy was donated by Die Burger in 1940, which saw the Young Lions from Manenberg being honoured with the first win. Thereafter, the Boarding Boys dominated proceedings, walking away as 11-time winners of the Silver Fez. “This is the most sought-after trophy in the Malay choirs and the teams will be going full steam ahead in their mission to be crowned champions,” says April. The event kicks off at 15:00, with the gates opening at 13:30. Adults pay R30, children R15 and tickets for the reserved area costs R40. There will also be CDs, DVDs, top eight Nederlandsliedere collections and Nederlands books on sale. “The public should know there will be strict security not allowing liquor or firearms inside the stadium,” he says. says geothermal electricity is cheaper than coal or nuclear power and the price does not go up every year along with the cost of fuel and labour. Even if there is no gas we could win. So here’s the question: would you rather have Shell fracking in the Karoo or Eskom trying to run half a dozen atomic power stations? Nuclear power requires consistent good management for at least 50 years. There is no place for CEOs who trim the maintenance budgets to improve the bottom line and their bonuses. And there is no place for cadre deployment. Imagine a future Minister of Minerals, Energy and Nationalisation – someone like Julius Malema – having a hand in the appointment of nuclear mangers. His matric woodwork studies would be of little help. We may be able to survive an implosion in the Land Bank or a foul-up in the Karoo, but mismanagement of a Koeberg could be goodbye Cape Town.

relationship. You can mess with his wife but don’t touch his borehole. The water of agricultural importance lies at depths of no more than a few hundred metres. Fracking, however, takes place something like 10 kilometres below the surface! That is five time deeper than our deepest gold mine. The temperature down there will be about 300°C and any water would become instant steam. If the hole is lined with steel there should be no contamination of agricultural water. But one can understand the fear. The biggest problems will be logistical ones. The equipment is massive and new roads will be required. What does one do with 10 kilometres of earth from borehole cores? The impact on the Karoo will be considerable. And where will the water needed for fracking come from? On the other hand, holes 10 kilometres deep will give us access to an inexhaustible supply of geothermal heat. And that can be turned into electricity. The US Department of Energy

THE long arm of the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum (CPF) has extended to Lavender Hill, with strong support shown to the community as they take ownership of their streets after the recent spate of gang violence. The Mitchell’s Plain Tactical Response Unit (TRU), reservists, CPF members, neighbourhood watches and sector commanders from Mitchell’s Plain spent the past two weeks assisting in the area, establishing street and block committees in the Steenberg and Lavender Hill area. Some officers and reservists from Mitchell’s Plain have been assigned to work within the area daily at various times. The contingent, together with Steenberg police and the Steenberg CPF, took to the streets three weeks ago making residents aware that they need to take ownership of their streets through forming street committees. Spokesperson for Steenberg CPF, Kevin Southgate, says: “Mitchell’s Plain has experienced gang violence before, and they came in to assist our community. Due to the infrastructure we have established block committees.” This arose out of a walkabout two weeks ago by the police and the CPF, when they met and spoke to residents about the various services offered by the police and the CPF. Southgate added: “Instead of being reactionary we are now being pro-active. What we have discovered is that parents know that their children are involved in crime, where guns are stored and where they are available. “The residents were encouraged to be accountable and to respect each other. The walk-about was to enhance the partnership between the police and the community. People were very responsive and we want to sustain the relationship,” says Southgate. The Mitchell’s Plain team was sent to work with Steenberg Police Station, and to assist in understanding the role of the sector commander. The sector commanders were encouraged to work with the

street and block committees, which were established to better understand and enhance and improve strategies to help with policing. “We are hoping that after the walk-about and meeting with residents more people will feel free to contact the police and share information about criminal activities. People are scared to report and tip-off the police as they are risking their lives and the safety of their family. We are building on the relationship with the police to reassure the community that they will be protected. The relationship should be built on mutual respect,” he says. Southgate says there have been no major incidents in the past three weeks. “We have found that with all the activity in the area now, shootings and stabbings seem to be spilling over into nearby areas. “Government must stamp out the problem of drugs and alcohol, as they know the houses and it’s their responsibility to remove the drug houses and the shebeens. All spheres of government need to work to rid the community of these elements, which are contributing to the decay of the area.” Michael Jacobs, Mitchell’s Plain cluster CPF chairperson – who started the initiative – says the proper implementation of sector policing in Lavender Hill, including the deployment of dedicated sector commanders, is essential to improving the relationship between the police and the community. “Council’s failure to provide proper lighting and decent road infrastructure in informal settlements like Hillview and others makes proper policing almost an impossible task. Bylaw enforcement in the area is a joke. It does not exist. “The gesture of acting Provincial Commissioner Sharon Jeptha to walk hand-in-hand with the community must be commended. The response of the community was overwhelming and residents had lots to say about the current policing strategies within the area. Residents are now more keen on getting involved in their structures to improve and take back their community,” he said.

Cry, beloved country WHILE most South Africans live in abject poverty, public officials such as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shiceka seem to have been living like a millionaire – if the findings of a Sunday Times report are true. No expense was allegedly spared by Shiceka who – according to documents in the newspaper’s possession – has spent more than R2.5 million on first-class flights and accommodation since 2008. The article states that Shiceka spent R640 000 in one year for him and staff to stay at the One & Only, of which R280 000 was spent on Shiceka alone – by his own admission. Furthermore, it is reported that Shiceka embarked on a first-class flight for him and his personal assistant, rounded off with a stay in a five-star hotel to visit his girlfriend in prison in Switzerland, at a cost of R335 000. The visit to the prison, in a chauffeur-driven limo, cost R32 000. If true, Shiceka’s lifestyle smacks of “blatant abuse of taxpayers’ money”. His alleged wasteful expenditure has attracted widespread condemnation. Shiceka is not the only South African public official whose lavish lifestyle is under scrutiny. In a country that can ill afford to blow millions of rands, ANC youth league leader Julius Malema cost taxpayers more than R886 000 for police bodyguards from October 2009 to October 2010. Malema did not hold any public office to justify having two bodyguards. He was just an ordinary citizen, like the millions of other ordinary South Africans who fork out millions to keep themselves safe. But the buck doesn’t stop there. Flying in the face of a country lacking housing, health and basic services, is Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu’s decision to lease two new aircraft for transporting VIPs, at a staggering R800 million. When South Africans voted a democratic government into power 17 years ago, they voted for democracy, and a better life for all. A better life is being had, but only by a privileged minority.
MINISTER of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shiceka has come under fire for leading a lavish lifestyle at taxpayers’ expense, following
a Sunday Times report into the R2,5 million in state money he has allegedly spent on luxury hotels, limousines and overseas trips since 2008. In a country whose
public representatives are often caught out enjoying too much of the good life, his particular blend of lavishness has a bit of a Hollywood ring to it.

Councillors begging for votes YES, it’s election time again and as usual Mitchell’s Plain is flooded with politicians, who are skarreling for votes. I’m not a politician, and as the readers can recall I resigned publicly from the “mighty” DA. For this reason I would like to take this opportunity to remind the people of Tafelsig and specifically Ward 99 about a couple of things they might have forgotten: . Firstly: “I wish Lackay well in all his endeavours for the future, as he did well in using the Democratic Alliance to obtain ownership of the house he now occupies.” This is the first sentence of Councillor Maria Weavers, who responded to my letter to the People’s Post on 24 August 2010. Although the DA couldn’t or wouldn’t assist me in my plight to get legal tenancy of this said house, Councillor Weavers’ response does give the impression that the DA gives houses to their members. In other words, you have to be a member of the DA to get a house, because there are a lot of people, including a lady who’s been on the waiting list since 1974, who still does not have houses. She also said in her response that she never made promises, which is a blatant lie, because in that same response she said that she would focus on service delivery. In this paper last week (“To hell with arrears”, People’s Post, 29 April) the subcouncil chairperson, Councillor Natalie Bent, got agitated with a group of residents who protested to call for the scrap-
ping of water arrears and told them to “shut up”. This is just a week after she said in an interview with another community paper that she’s been assisting the community on a daily basis with applications for the indigent grant and pensioners’ rebates. I attended a meeting on substance abuse and was surprised to see … no, let me say not to see, Helen Zille there, because if I remember correctly, before she became Premier, she was a staunch fighter against substance abuse, especially in Mitchell’s Plain. She attended marches, was even locked up and sat at bonfires in front of merchants’ houses, but now she wasn’t anywhere near Mitchell’s Plain. Now people of Tafelsig and the broader Mitchell’s Plain, I want to ask you just two questions: 1. Is this the kind of treatment you deserve from people you elected to represent you? 2. Are we really this ignorant that we will vote for donkeys to represent us? Make the smart choice, vote for people you know or give the new kid on the block a chance to prove that we are not ignorant. By the way, I don’t have any ambition to stand in any elections. I’m quite happy doing a councillor’s job without the fat pay check – R29 057 per month Thank you, CHRISTO LACKAY Tafelsig resident
General .To the leadership and members of Colonians CC, you were a very big disappointment to many of us cricket lovers during the past season. You not only disappointed us on the playing field, but also off the cricket field with poor behaviour. You did not look like true cricketers. Don’t do things the way you did things during the past season. Disappointed .Before there was a democracy in SA, service delivery with no councillors appointed, things were excellent, but now it is not. Surely there is a better way to spend the money used for their annual salary of R108 million? For your information - I know how! Niefie van die Kaap. We’ve got to do something about arrogant staff at rent offices. Any ideas?Mrs P. In response . So true, send all drug users to Robben Island, Disgusted mother and grandma whose grandchildren are suffering because of drugs Bus service . Dear Golden Arrow, please reconsider running buses on the Lentegeur route again. It’s a nightmare for my three school kids who need to travel to school daily in Rocklands. They have to face many traffic dangers. . I live in Colorado Park. It’s disgusting that there are no buses from Westgate Mall to Colorado Park and London Village. We must pay special fees for taxis with our groceries, or take unsafe Samora Machel taxis or face getting robbed walking along Weltevreden Parkway. Do these bus routes belong to the taxis only? . I agree, please schedule a Lentegeur bus for us seniors every hour or two. Security needed
. The Promenade is being revamped but the security is still as poor as before. People are being robbed between the front entrance and the robots and foreigners are fighting over drugs inside. . We need security officers on the trains – not on the platforms at the stations. The criminals walk from carriage to carriage while the train is moving, looking for an easy target to rob or attack. Please place a security officer or two on each train to minimise these attacks. Mysteries of life . Please can anyone give a logical explanation as to why mall and big supermarket tiled floors are slippery? . How come retail stores and major supermarkets are still not giving customers the five cents at the check-outs after the rounding on the till print out shows this is owed to them? This is theft and must be dealt with urgently. A. Albertyn Thank you . I would like to thank the people who helped my husband last Sunday when he was involved in a bike accident. They were kind enough to take him to his father’s house. Thank you again and may the Almighty reward you in abundance. Please contact the family on 083 240 2755. His wife, children and the rest of the family . Grateful thanks to Westgate Mall for the spacious and conveniently situated parking for the disabled – what a pleasure! Help please . If anyone can assist me with art/drawing classes for my 12-year-old son, or advise where I can take him, I would really appreciate it. Please call 084 250 9301/ (021) 9406431. Thank you. Karen

Teen drug statistics are no surprise memory of their crimes will haunt them for the rest of their lives. What I find concerning about Dr Hamdually’s findings is that 70% of the respondents suffer from co-morbid affective disorders or mental illnesses. My own finding in the youth centre is that the incidence of mental illness is under 2%, so I would question the high percentage of 70% in his research. Another worrying finding in my experience is that children who end up with psychosis from tik or cannabis are not easily managed with anti-psychotic medication. Most end up on disability grants because the condition is usually irreversible. Invariably there are very few caregivers for these children and if there caregivers, they tend to exploit these children and use their grant money for their own addictions. It’s a no-win situation. It is fine to have a whole lot of statistics but doing nothing about them is a colossal waste of time. A lot of the findings on drug addiction are old hat by now. The problem lies with our apathetic society and our un-innovative policy makers. Both seem to have buried their heads in the sand like ostriches in the hope that a solution will find itself. None of this is going to happen until we take serious action. A number of community organisations have tried to engage the Department of Social Services, which is charged with the task of setting up the policy on drug addiction, but it seems the department is not at all interested in hearing the views of the community other than to render lip service when they are on their publicity drives. What we need is action because a nation that neglects its youth is preparing itself for a headless future, where gangsters will run the country and drug-addicted morons in their millions will be ready to do their bidding. They too, will inherit the wind and eventually die, because there will be no one to do the work of running the country in a civilised manner. DR EV RAPITI Eastridge

THE high addiction rate among teens in Mitchell’s Plain, revealed by Dr Hamdullay’s research conducted in 2007, was received with outrage by community leaders in Mitchell’s Plain. But for anyone working in the field of drug addiction the results should be common knowledge. The high rate of addiction is no reflection of the community or parental upbringing. but a grim reminder of the decadent times we live in. As far back as a decade ago a study among high school children in England revealed that almost 50% of high school children had tried cannabis. If this was the case in England, a First World country, why should it be any different or less in a Third World country like South Africa? This survey, however, does not reveal the true picture of what is happening in our country because it only targeted a small group of 400 children from Grade 8 to Grade 11. In the youth centre for awaiting-trial prisoners, I have found the following findings, which will make Dr Hamdually’s findings pale into insignificance. Ninety-five percent of crimes committed by the youth are drug related; 80% are on tik, Mandrax, cannabis (dagga) and alcohol; 100% of them are on cigarettes; about 30% have been on dagga from age 9; 95% of the youth have left school between the ages of 13 and 16; the average period of drugging has been about four years; the average grade is Grade 4. The majority of these children were drugging from the age of 13, so they were drugging for about four years before dropping out of school, which means that these children learnt very little in their last four years of school before dropping out. The most common crimes are housebreaking, theft, robbery and violence for drugs or under the influence of drugs. Alcohol seems to be associated with the worst crimes like murder. Children as young as 14 are in jail for murders committed under the influence of alcohol. They end up suffering from severe PTSD, as they try come to terms with their crime. They are wrecked for life because the

pects of the game, were simply the better side on the day – Coetzee is the first to admit this. “We were not at our best; tactically the Reds were much better and their physical intensity was much higher – all credit to the Reds,” he said. A territorial game, keeping the Stormers in their own half for most of the match, saw the likes of Quade Cooper and Will Genia using tactical kicks to put pressure on the men in navy blue. City to host global fest

THE Safa Cape Town is forging ahead with plans to stage an eight-nation international showpiece for under-20s – believing it will generate a huge financial spinoff for amateur soccer in 2012. So much so that the Safa CT application to run the event – in partnership with the City of Cape Town – has already been approved by the SA Football Association. Safa CT president, Norman Arendse, disclosed that the eight-nation championship will comprise the respective winners of the six Fifa Confederations Cup championships, the SA under-20s and an additional African team. “It is vital that we recognise under-20 soccer as a milestone for the development of our players. It is our responsibility as an amateur association to showcase this talent,” said Arendse. The blueprint for the 2012 championship comes on the back of the successful inaugural Cape Town International Challenge for under-20s that was hosted by the Safa CT and the city in 2010. Ghana, Brazil, South Africa and Nigeria vied for honours on the eve of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Ghana defeated Brazil 3-2 in the challenge final, watched by a 50 000-strong crowd at Cape Town Stadium – with the overall gate-takings from all matches allowing the city to contribute R600 000 to the coffers of the Safa CT. Arendse also disclosed that the Safa CT has secured increased financial support from other stakeholders to stage its senior and junior competitions this year. . Coca-Cola has agreed to increase its sponsorship for the Coke knockout Cup championships from R500 000 to R600 000. . Freeworld Coatings has upped its sponsorship for the club championships for under-11s and under-13s from R50 000 to R75 000. . Peace activist Mary Burton will patron the new Unity Cup for under-16 high school teams from various communities to the tune of R150 000 this year; and . Build It will sponsor junior tournaments in areas close to its branches across the Peninsula.

Brent’s making it happen BRIAN GAFFNEY
BRIAN GAFFNEY
RE/MAX Ultra Select
A
T age 30, Brent Carelse resists thoughts about hanging up his boots in the forseeable future – but rather focuses on what more he can aspire to achieve with Ajax Cape Town FC on the road ahead. What is uppermost in Carelse’s mind of course at the moment, is to help Ajax win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions title for the first time in its 11-year history. “I believe we can finish top if we stay focused and avoid complacency,” says Carelse, who has become no stranger on the champions’ rostrum. Carelse – eyeing a fourth winners’ medal – represented champions Mamelodi Sundowns (2006/2007), whereafter he shared in two of SuperSport United’s three consecutive league triumphs (2008/2009 and 2009/2010). Now Ajax could enhance their championship chances if they notch full points against Golden Arrows at Newlands Stadium on Friday (start 20:00). Carelse, buoyed by Ajax CEO George Comitis’ disclosure that he will sign the midfield maestro next season – after he came on loan from SuperSport in January – is expected to continue his rich vein of form for the Urban Warriors. “I was not only looking for a new challenge when I returned to Ajax from SuperSport, where I felt my game was stagnating because of my irregular appearances in matches. I also felt a need to settle in Cape Town with my family,” said Carelse. The presence of a versatile leftsided midfielder – who has thus far netted four goals for Ajax – has also brought out the best in the freescoring Thulani Serero and Khama Billiat. So often Carelse’s penchant for
engaging his pacey fellow players in quick one-two plays has allowed Ajax to prosper during their recent run of successes. The other motivation for Carelse is to be mentored by Dutch coach Foppe de Haan. “He is professional in his approach and a very honest coach. He constantly tells us that we are better players than what we think we are.” “De Haan’s one-on-one chats with each player really makes us believe in our abilities,” enthused Carelse. The Johannesburg-born Carelse is also thankful to his father Dougie Carelse – a former pro with Cape Town Spurs and Vereeniging Old Boys in the old Federation Professional League – for inspiring him to pursue a soccer career. “My dad insisted that I enrol at the School of Excellence in Johannesburg during my teens. “It was a tough experience but he encouraged me to persevere to ensure my future in the game. “He has always allowed me the freedom to do things my way on the field. But he will occasionally tell me what aspect of my game I need to improve on,” said Carelse junior, who first turned professional with Hellenic FC (then coached by Gavin Hunt) at age 17. But back to the showdown with Golden Arrows. Remember that it was Arrows that drew 2-2 with Ajax in 2007/2008 to deny Ajax the title on goal difference when the clubs tied on points. First choice custodian, Hans Vonk, is also ruled out by suspension and will be replaced by Andre Petim on Friday night. Good news for Ajax though, is that Clayton Daniels returns from suspension and that Saamehg Doutie is fit to play. . Tickets are on sale at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers branches. No tickets will be on sale at the stadium.
