Lavender Hill called to action LIAM MOSES
C
OMMUNITY safety MEC Albert Fritz has urged Lavender Hill residents to “stop waiting for government” to find a solution to the gang war that has plagued the area over the past two years, but to form a collective front against the violence. Fritz was speaking to a group of about 300 angry residents who gathered at St Mark’s Church yesterday after a weekend of bloodshed shook Lavender Hill. Police have linked Friday’s fatal shootings to gang revenge attacks involving rival groups the Junky Funky Kids and the Corner Boys. Dale Jordan (15), Shaquille Jacobs (15) and Sergio Domingo (21), who were believed to be innocent bystanders, died in the hail of bullets which broke out on the corner of Grindal Avenue and Hek Road on Friday when a white Toyota drove past. Six other people were injured, including women and children. The Toyota was found in nearby Seawinds late on Friday night. No arrests have yet been made, but police have detained four peo-
ple for questioning. On Sunday night another two boys, aged 15 and 16, were shot in their legs on the corner of Depsiton and Saint Simon Streets in Lavender Hill. Police cannot confirm whether or not the incident was gang related. The boys are recovering in hospital. At the meeting on Monday, while community members called on government to deploy the army and for a curfew to be implemented to stop the violence, Fritz encouraged residents to strengthen their own resolve to fight gangsterism. “What about strengthening the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in the area? There are big companies who want to sponsor neighbourhood watches,” he said. The crowd was visibly frustrated and angry about the deaths that have occurred in the area. They interrupted Fritz a number of times and had to be asked to be quiet. In response, Fritz said that the army would not solve the problem of gang violence because the gangsters were not identifiable More than six years ago, the greater Lavender Hill area, which includes St Montague’s Village, Vil-

A gang intervention programme was launched by the Department of Community Safety in 2008, and last year roleplayers warned government and the police that active recruitment was taking place in the area. Sporadic gang-related shootings, some of which proved fatal, have plagued the area and culminated in the fatalities at the weekend. Kevin Southgate, Steenberg CPF chairperson, says the current mood of the community was created because government had waited too long to have the meeting. “We submitted a memorandum to the department of Community Safety in November last year in which we raised our concerns about the violence in the area and asked to have a meeting,” said Southgate. “I believe that if we had that meeting earlier, what happened could have been averted. It’s quite clear that the community is disappointed and frustrated by the lack of response.” Community leader, Aysha Davids, chairperson of local NGO,
Women Hope for the Nation, said shootings happen so often that the deployment of the army would be the best solution. “I feel like this community is being held hostage,” said Davids. “Children can’t even play in the streets any longer. We feel that they need to bring in the army. Shootings happen quite often here.” Gaironesa Solomons, the grandmother of Shaquille Jacobs, tells People’s Post that the teen was not involved in gangsterism at all. Jacobs was standing on the corner of Hek and Grindel Roads near his home with a group of friends when the white Toyota Corolla pulled up and shot randomly into the crowd. The corner where Jacobs and the others were standing is a known hang-out of the Corner Boys gang. “He was just standing on the corner with his friends,” says Solomons. “I cant think of any reason why someone would want to hurt or kill him.” Solomons added that she did not want to attend the meeting with Fritz because it would be too upsetting. “I can’t describe this feeling but
it’s very painful,” says Solomons. “It makes me want to run away from here.” Clive Jacobs, a Lavender Hill community worker and former Steenberg CPF chairperson, says territory is one of the major reasons for the ongoing gang battle between rival gangs. “The gang fights are about recruitment, turf and drugs,” said Jacobs. “We are being kept hostage by this. The community can’t really do what it wants to.” At the meeting Fritz said he planned to increase the number of Bambanani community safety volunteers and increase the number of search and seizure operations in schools to curb the violence November Filander, SAPS provincial spokesperson, said police had been deployed throughout Lavender Hill and search and seizure operations were being conducted at hot-spots in the area. Filander urged residents to contact the police immediately if they know of any illegal activity. The Steenberg police could not be reached for comment by the time of going to print.

More trains for southern suburbs LIAM MOSES
SOUTHERN suburbs residents have welcomed an announcement by Metrorail that they will soon be able to travel home from Cape Town as late as 21:00 at night. Metrorail said last week that three extra trains would be added to the southern suburbs line timetable from Monday 28 March. The new trains will depart from Cape Town Station at 19:30, 20:30 and 21:15 and will return to Cape Town after reaching Simon’s Town station. The extended timetable is part of a combined pilot project between the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Provincial Ministry of Transport and Public Works and Metrorail, that will also see park and ride facilities being opened at 10 stations along the line. Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, said the matter of commuter safety had been taken into account and addressed. “We realise that people are concerned

about safety and we understand that,” said Scott. “We partnered with the City of Cape Town and the province to provide security. There will be increased security and railway police on the trains. And the City will secure the park and rides.” MEC for Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, said he hoped the later trains would alleviate some of the traffic congestion. “The extended service is an incentive for motorists to leave their cars and use the train instead,” said Carlisle. According to Scott, Metrorail has a plan to inform the public. “We don’t have a huge budget for advertising, but we will target major employers so they can inform their staff. “The city and the province will also inform their staff. We will also let the Chamber of Commerce know so that they can notify their members,” said Scott. She added that commuters could call 0800 656 463 for more information or visit the Metrorail website – at www.metrorail.co.za – to find out more about the extended timetable.
Early detection can save your sight MELISSA LE ROUX
THE League of the Friends of the Blind (Lofob) observed World Glaucoma Day on Saturday 12 March. Glaucoma – which manifests when the optic nerve is damaged by an increase of fluid in the eye – is one of the top three causes of blindness worldwide, with just over 10% of the world’s population inflicted with the condition. “It’s best to have the condition detected at the early stages, as it is manageable then. “You have to have your eyes tested regularly – every two years – so that you know where you stand,” says Philip Bam, executive director of Lofob. Some medical experts believe the cause of glaucoma in children and adults is an inadequate blood supply to the optic nerve, or that the tissues supporting the nerve are weak.
There are no warning signs other than the gradual loss of sight, which people may not usually notice. Stellenbosch resident, Magdalene Newman (82), who has been living with glaucoma for 40 years, says she has completely lost sight in her right eye and has only 10% in her left eye. “I am not so healthy, but I’m still alive and I still have the strength to take each day as it comes,” she says. Newman visits the Lofob institution weekly to help her learn Braille. While Lofob continues to offer comprehensive rehabilitation services to blind people, it also strives to promote the prevention of blindness. “We try to advise them and provide them with low vision devices and equipment that they will be able to make use of. But it is very important that people do not get to that point.” Call the Lofob offices on (021) 705-3753.

Taxi guard shot by passenger MELISSA LE ROUX
A TAXI GUARD (29) has been shot in the neck by a passenger. The incident occurred last Friday morning, when the passenger got into the minibus van, paid his fare and sat down. He remained seated as the taxi drove along its route and later disembarked on the corner of Prince George Drive and Concert Boulevard in Retreat. As he was getting off, he pulled out a gun and shot the guard. Steenberg CPF chairperson, Kevin Southgate, says there were five passengers in the taxi at the time of the shooting, and all fled
the scene. “We are trying to locate the passengers, especially the two learners, as we want to provide them with trauma counselling.” Southgate says the crime is believed to be gang-related, and Steenberg police are stopping gangsters at random for questioning. The taxi guard belonged to the Steenberg Taxi Association. A representative of the association, who does not want to be named, says the driver of the vehicle was very traumatised. “There was no robbery or motive and I don’t really know if he was a gangster.” No arrests have been made. Despite many attempts, People’s Post was unable to obtain comment from the police at the time of going to print.

Man shocked by overhead cable TAMMY PETERSEN
METRORAIL has committed to “closely monitoring” the safety training of a company in charge of security at train stations after a guard was shocked at Steenberg station last Tuesday. It is understood that two guards were standing on separate platforms when one asked the other for the key to the station’s guard room. Riana Scott, spokesperson for Metrorail, confirms that one guard then threw the key across the track, but it landed on the overhead cable. The guard tried to retrieve the key but when he reached for it, his head touched the cable, sending a jolt of electricity through his body. How he got to the overhead cable is still under investigation, Scott says. The man fell from this position and when he landed on the track below, he was shocked again by a live cable. Panic stricken, another guard
tried to help by throwing water on the man, which exacerbated the situation. Miraculously, the man survived the fall and the shocks. A third guard apparently pushed him off the tracks with a stick. Scott says the matter of safe work practice has been raised with the head of the security company. “Their performance and safety training will be closely monitored to ensure that they comply with safety legislation,” she says. It is also believed that the security service provider, Sechaba Security, is refusing to pay the man’s medical bills. However, the company referred all People’s Post queries to Scott, who said the matter would be raised with the company. People’s Post was unable to gain clarity on the man’s medical condition at our time of going to print. Scott adds that two trains were delayed as a result of the incident.

Vehicle with blind children stoned LIAM MOSES
A VEHICLE carrying blind children and visually impaired adults was stoned, apparently by protesting taxi drivers, in Langa yesterday. The vehicle, which belongs to League of Friends of the Blind (Lofob), was transporting the passengers home when the incident happened. Phillip Bam, Lofob chairperson, said while he understood and respected the rights of protesters, innocent people should not be hurt in the process. “Lofob understands that people might wish to protest, but we will not accept violence against inno-
cent people as part of protest action,” said Bam. “The taxi associations who called this strike must take full responsibility for the collateral damage.” None of the passengers were hurt during the stoning and only minor damage was inflicted on the car. The driver of the vehicle was reportedly “shocked” by the attack and surprised that the police, who he says were nearby, did nothing to stop it. According to Bam, Lofob’s vehicle have been attacked by protesters in the past. “This is not the first time that Lofob vehicles, which are clearly
signwritten, has been attacked,” said Bam. “Not so long ago some taxi people intimidated one of our drivers in Gugulethu, thinking that our vehicle must have been a rogue taxi operator. Many years ago, one of our vehicles was torched in Khayelitsha during the then infamous “Barcelona Torch” campaign. We are justly outraged at this senseless attack.” Bam pleaded with protesters to find ways of addressing their “gripes” with the government, and not to let “the poor suffer because of irresponsible protest methods”. Bam said it would cost thousands to repair the damaged vehicle.

Polishing young girls into elegant ladies MELISSA LE ROUX
INCREASE your confidence both personally and professionally with Cleo Bower’s branch of Bella Donna Finishing School. With franchises all across the country, Bowers only saw it fit to use the opportunity and start a princess project where young ladies in communities such as Lavender Hill, Retreat, Coniston Park, Heathfield and Ottery, can have a chance to uplift themselves in a fun and positive way. Growing up in Mitchell’s Plain and then spending her teen years in Lavender Hill, Bowers got a front row look at what young women turn into when they are not given a push in the right direction. “I’ve always liked working with youth and this school will give me a chance to teach a variety of essential life skills to prepare girls for life beyond school, university or college,” says the mogul.
While the classes are fundamentally for high school/college girls, customised lessons are available for corporate clients. The classes are presented in a fun and upbeat way, designed to make the young ladies feel comfortable and at ease. Lessons include etiquette, style, public speaking, self defence, goal setting, time management, nutrition and exercise, money matters, handy hints for around the home, décor and design, entertaining, relationships, career choices, interview tips and many more. “My aim is to develop young girls into ladies and raise their self esteem, morals and to uplift their talent. “The girls will have fun participating in fashion shows, organising entertainment evenings with their friends, learning how to apply make-up, how to care for their skin, all while developing their personality. “And while these classes are good fun, they are vital in transforming the girls into wellgroomed and well balanced women.”

The forms for the lodging of objections are obtainable at these venues. In addition the valuation roll is available on the Council website as from 22 March 2011 (the address is provided below). Properties are selected to appear on the Second Supplementary Valuation Roll to the 2009 General Valuation Roll (SV02) Roll in terms of section 78(1) of Act if the property a) was incorrectly omitted from the Valuation Roll; b) has been included in the municipality after the last general valuation; c) has been subdivided or consolidated after the last general valuation; d) has undergone a substantial increase or decrease in market value since the last general valuation; e) was substantially incorrectly valued in the last general valuation; f) must be revalued for any other exceptional reason; g) of which the category has changed. In terms of Section 49(1)(a)(ii) of the Act, any property owner or person who so desires may lodge an objection with the municipal manager in respect of any matter reflected in, or omitted from, the SV02 within the abovementioned period.
Bowers is currently busy with getting the project off the ground. She liaised with high schools in Grassy Park and they have agreed to her holding the lessons in tone of their classrooms. The princess project also issues Matric ball dresses to girls who cannot afford it. They are provided with make-up on the day and even helped out with the car to transport them on the night. “I am currently working on my own and I am looking for young girls in the community whom I can train to help me. I also need sponsors who would like to help be a part of a project that is as fun and exciting as the princess project.” The classes will be held for three to four months and lessons will be given once a week. Classes for girls aged 12 will cost R50 per month, girls between the ages of 13 and 18, will be R100 per month, and older girls will cost R150. Classes are kept small to ensure everyone gets the attention they deserve. ROM its humble beginnings, when only six women helped 18 girls affected by abuse, Lavender Hill organisation Philisa Abafazi-Bethu has grown in stature in the community. They are now equipped with a three-year plan to run a residence that will serve as a refuge where abused women and girls from the community can heal. “We want them to develop themselves, acquire a skill and be sustainable,” says Philisa AbafaziBethu director, Lucinda Evans, who established the organisation in 2008. “It’s my dream for it to be a multi-disciplinary centre for women from Lavender Hill and the surrounding areas.” But for now, the organisation and its volunteers are focusing on what they currently own, with programmes running from its Southern Hills base five days a week helping nearly 200 females – and two men. “Every Monday is our servicing day, where we deal with women who have been affected by abuse,” Evans says. “We talk to these women and counsel about 15 clients. “We previously also dealt with drug addicts, but we just do not have the capacity for that at present. However, we would like to revive this service once we are able to.” Tuesdays is support day at the organisation, where women from current or past abusive relationships get together to interact, receive counselling and participate in self-esteem and communication workshops. “Tuesday also sees a group of lawyers, who do pro bono work, with us,” Evan adds. “This service has been very successful, with
four successful cases thus far. We also follow-up on women who have gained protection orders against their perpetrators and our facility team goes out to do home visits.” Wednesdays are dedicated to the elderly, with an elderly support group aimed at nurturing and life skills. “We have implemented the notion of being safe in volatile situations, taught them to use an ATM and the bank in general,” Evans comments. “We also made sure that those who abuse the ladies in the elderly group know that there are people who THE TEAM: Local and international volunteers from Philisa AbafaziBethu care for them.” are geared up to grow the organisation. Strike terror BELEAGUERED commuters are once again getting the short end of the public transport stick as a citywide taxi strike got under way yesterday (Monday). Members of the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) protested about “draconian” traffic laws and the red tape and “sloppiness” around the issuing of operating licences by provincial government. Santaco secretary general Philip Taaibosch says the Western Cape “is the only province in South Africa where taxi operators are harassed in such a big way”. Taxi drivers are entitled to protest about matters affecting their livelihoods, but peacefully so. That the strike turned violent on its first day displays a blatant disregard for the government’s warning that Santaco will be held personally responsible for any violence. Even the National Taxi Alliance’s urging taxi drivers “not do anything and to park the taxis at ranks or at home” fell on deaf ears. Many taxi drivers are notoriously reckless. Their conduct during strikes bears testimony to their overall lack of regard for themselves, their passengers and fellow road users. They threaten the very commuters who faithfully support them and rely on them as their only mode of transport from the townships to work. Among the alarming incidents reported since the strike began: a bread truck was set alight; vehicles were set alight and stoned by striking drivers; stone-throwing occurred in Fish Hoek and along Klipfontein Road; Golden Arrow buses were stoned on Lansdowne Road. As with previous taxi strikes, this strike was characterised on its first day by violence, intimidation, destruction and opportunistic crime – none of which will garner sympathy or even empathy.
Wonderful women at work Gang violence – deaths could have been averted THE eruption of gang violence over the weekend was a tragedy which could have been avoided had the relevant authorities responded sooner to the memorandum handed over to the MEC’s office in December 2010. Gang violence in the area has been at a very sensitive point for a while and the community has made several unsuccessful calls for serious intervention. It is clearly the lack of response to the calls by community leaders that has led to the deaths of innocent bystanders. All human life is valuable and should be regarded as sacred. To use the current situation as an opportunity for political exposure is both insensitive and irresponsible. It further saddens me that the march to the police station on Saturday afternoon was organised by certain groups of “community leaders and church leaders” who went around in the area to mobilise people after they had had a meeting with senior police officials late on Friday night to discuss the situation. This action was irresponsible and potentially compromised the safety of all those who participated as the march was clearly illegal and the police had the right to disperse the crowd. I, however, wish to thank the SAPS for the manner in which they managed the situation and assisted in restoring calm to a volatile situation. The Steenberg CPF wishes to express its sincere condolences and support to the families of those innocent victims who died in the gang violence on Friday. We further wish to appeal to the community to exercise restraint and to use the available channels to seek solutions to the ongoing violence and to call on community leaders and political parties not to use the situation to sweep up people’s emotions for short term political gains. Together we can achieve more. KEVIN SOUTHGATE Steenberg CPF chairperson
SOROPTIMIST International Cape of Good Hope was once again hard at work at the Community Chest Carnival at Maynardville Park in Wynberg, which entertained the general public over a period of four days last week. This is our 35th year at Maynardville, and we have successfully run a tombola and second-hand goods store during this time. The weather was great, so we were kept busy by young and old visiting our store. We raised just over R19 000 for the
Community Chest, which supports over 400 charities in the Cape Town area. Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation for women in management and professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. If you are interested in attending one of our meetings, please contact Lisette Genseberger on (021) 762-4930 or visit our national website – www.soroptimist.co.za LIZETTE GENSEBERGER Cape Town
Plaudits for the late Des Ross MANY thanks and eulogies have been published about the late Des Ross. I thought that it would be fitting to give thanks to him just one more time for the work he did, especially the work he did with the youth of this area. As already mentioned, Mr Ross cared a lot about the youth, but what was not mentioned was his on-going work and assistance he gave to the youth who wanted to further their studies after matric. He assisted matriculants in helping them get bursaries at various FET colleges, more specifically False Bay College and the Raymond Ackerman Academy. He would then regularly arrange specific days for youths to come to open
days which he arranged in the Retreat Community Hall with college representatives. I applaud him for the work he did with the youth, especially in this community. I hope that through his work and example, new leaders will arise to fill the need in this community like he did. The youth in our community need assistance. We all know that knowledge is power, so by assisting the youth in furthering their studies you are empowering the community and in turn, we will be empowering our society, which will empower the nation and will make a better world. TAMARYN THOMPSON Steenberg
Your SMSes . I totally agree with JM in People’s Post 1 March 2011: tenants should unite and demand the removal all SOHCO staff because they are unprofessional. . Yes Mr Jacobs, my mom, Amy Solomons, who is 75 years old, is a volunteer for Hospice for more than 10 years, and should be applauded as well in your area. . What happened to the blazers and the ties Western Province athletics received when they qualified? Today the parents have to pay for everything. . There is a definite lack of ginger in Stoney ginger beer these days. Has anyone else also tasted the difference? L.S. . If we are proudly South African, then why don’t we fly our flag in front of our homes like they do in other countries such as America? If we can do this then we can really make ourselves proud, don’t you agree? Amos
. Vandalism at state facilities is a great concern. I think it would help if security cameras are installed inside and outside the buildings and a security monitor deployed where there is not anyone on duty, and they can monitor and communicate with their colleagues. I am sure this will stop vandalism in its tracks. Concerned health worker . I’m concerned, not just for myself, but also for my girlfriends. We finished school, but now we can’t find jobs because we are inexperienced. How will we ever gain experience if nobody is willing to take a chance on us? Concerned young adult . It’s election time again and now you see all the existing councillors popping up like flies. Please people, don’t vote for big parties because once they have your vote they will say goodbye. Rather vote for smaller parties and give them a chance, because they might just be able to solve your council issues. Ceres

The rapid development of players like Thulani Serero, Khama Billiat, Sameehg Doutie, Sonwabile Lolo and Granwald Scott has marked Ajax’s progress thus far. Soweto-born Serero (21) and Billiat (21) from Zimbabwe (21) have each scored vital goals, while the pacy Doutie (22) is enjoying his best season since joining Ajax at age 17. Their efficiency is matched by Kensington-born midfielder Scott and defender Lolo, whom Ajax nabbed from African Tribes amateurs in Khayelitsha. The efforts of Tembinkosi “Terror” Fanteni and Serero to hit the target 11 and eight times respectively this season also augurs well for the match. The not-so-good news for De Haan is that the suspended Doutie will miss the crucial showdown. star-studded Ajax-Amsterdam FC side that won the European Cup for three consecutive years (1971-1973) – missing out on the 1971 final due to a fractured leg. Notably in his heyday the versatile Krol could be depended on to play in all defensive and midfield positions for club and country. So no wonder Pirates boasts one of the best defensive records in the league this season – thanks mainly to Krol’s coaxing of defensive midfielder Andile Jali (21) and leftback Reuben Cloete into tough ball winners. Pirates have scored 34 times and conceded 16 goals while Ajax, on the other hand, have hit the target 36 times but have conceded 24 goals. This of course is a worry for De Haan and goalkeeper Hans Vonk – his custodian at Heerenveen FC for several years before he moves Ajax Amsterdam FC and their Cape Town namesakes. But De Haan showed his hand when the
long-serving flank defenders Brett Evans and Nazeer Allie – who were sidelined with leg injuries for several weeks – returned to the team that lost 2-1 to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup knockout championship over the weekend. The possible inclusion of both flank defenders with the centre back duo of Derek Descamp and Clayton Daniels could be De Haan’s ploy to snuff out Pirates’ free-scoring Katlego Mashego, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Tiou Segolele. Pirates, since the inception of the PSL in 1995, have been crowned champions in 2001/02 and 2002/03, while placing second in 2004/05, 2005/06 and 2008/09. . Tickets at R60 (main stand only) and R40 are available at Computicket and Shoprite/ Checkers branches. bgaffney@peoplespost.co.za
