While Tobin says the selling of her allocation of tickets has been successful, she still needs the help of the community. “I have to organise my own fundraising, donations, gifts and sponsorship to cover travelling costs, clothing, shoes and jewellery. I am also levied with 10 tickets. The ticket selling was successful and has been sold out for the gala event. I would appreciate help from the community also to vote,” she adds. BLISTERS FOR BREAD

The first steps towards charity NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain

F

ifty years ago, along Doncaster Road in Kenilworth, Stanley Meiring stopped to give a junior fellow Savio College learner a piggyback ride during the very first Blisters for Bread. He was one of around 150 learners and staff at Savio College in Lansdowne who embarked on a 19-mile (30.5km) walk to raise funds for the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA). The event took place on Sunday 2 June 1968, with learners walking from the Simon’s Town Catholic Church to their school grounds in Lansdowne. A matric learner himself, Meiring passed his fellow learner, “who had run out of steam”, and helped him to the school premises where they both finished on foot. “In terms of effort, it was a non-event. Today, if I have to do 5km, I think: ‘When am I going to get a stitch’,” he chuckes. It was those young learners, some in Grade 4 at the time, who were the real heroes of the first Blisters for Bread, says Richard Lang, who was also a matric learner when he took part in the first Blisters. “There were eight- and nine-year-olds walking 19 miles. Only about half a dozen didn’t finish. Some were carried along the way but

were dropped off to finish,” he says. Although the walk was a first, the real concept ahead of its time was raising sponsorship, Lang says. “The concept of sponsorship wasn’t done at the time. There was no such thing. I went door to door and had to explain the concept to them,” he recalls. Lang remembers how his mother sponsored him 5c per mile. Meiring approached some churches in the area, asking for sponsorship. “I still have my certificate. I collected R158, which was the equivalent of 1580 meals – it cost 10c a meal in those days. Today it is around R3.” A total sum of R3500 was raised in the first walk. Lang says the Savio College learners were from “working class families” and took the fundraising to heart. “My dad was a fitter and turner. The kids [at Savio College] came from all over,” he says. “We could relate to kids who were poorer than us.” Due to the success of the event, Savio College handed Blisters for Bread over to PSFA. Now called the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk, the event has since taken place on a Sunday morning every year, with the event only being cancelled once during August 2008 due to severe weather conditions. “I was honoured to be part of the first

group. We didn’t know it would grow into what it is today,” Lang says. Last year’s event attracted 12 594 registered walkers and managed to raise a total of R629 700 from entry fees. This amount enabled PSFA to provide 1399 hungry learners with a nutritious breakfast and lunch while at school for an entire calendar year. Established 60 years ago in 1958, PSFA is a registered non-profit organisation that addresses hunger in young learners attending primary, secondary and special needs schools, as well as Early Child-

hood Development (ECD) centres and Further Education and Training (FET) centres in the province. Nutritious cooked meals in the form of breakfast and lunch are currently being provided to over 29 572 young people at 201 educational institutions throughout the Western Cape. PSFA has to date served over 1.7 billion meals to needy youngsters in the Western Cape. V This year’s event will take place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 26 August. The entry fee is only R60. Entries can be done online or the entry form can be downloaded at www.psfa.org.za. Online entries close on Sunday 19 August.

FROM PAGE 1 “The fundraising is the most important part because I have to have the R3000 minimum and flight tickets,” she adds. In her spare time, Tobin says she loves playing sport. She plays hockey and recently joined the Western Province Deaf Women’s Cricket Club. When she is not spending time with her children, she likes to listen to music and dance, even though she is profoundly deaf.

“I am aware that the ‘hearing’ could see it as a challenge, but they should come and see the deaf enjoying themselves dancing to music. “I am profoundly deaf. We, the deaf, feel the vibration of the music when the beats hit the dance floor or even our body. “We feel the vibration similar to hearing people, but we have to concentrate more. “When I listen to music I use headphones above my hearing aid to hear the

beats,” Tobin explains. She adds that her family’s support inspires her even more. “My family has always supported me and they are ecstatic about my becoming one of the finalists. “They are confident that I will be the 2018 Mrs Deaf South Africa and bring home the crown to the Western Cape.” V For more information, visit the Worthy Women Facebook page and SMS “MDS 23” to 47439 to vote for Joy Tobin. Voting closes on Thursday 4 October.

The 24th Cape Town International Kite Festival will be held on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October and learners can “Rise Up” and win at Africa’s biggest kite festival. The competition is open to primary and high school learners. Learners from primary schools can participate in two categories, namely “snippet of 83 words” which is also open to learners from schools with special educational needs. Entries close on Friday 31 August and entry is free. Send your email to events@cmh.org.za and you will be sent a kite-making kit for your team to decorate and fly at the festival.

The second category, “longer release of about 230 words”, is also open to primary school learners and learners with special educational needs. Every team that enters is given a set of four blank kite skins to illustrate with their interpretation of the 2018 theme, “Rise Up”. “We at the Cape Mental Health Organisation believe everyone is born with the potential to ‘Rise Up’ beyond life’s circumstances,” says Ingrid Daniels, director of Cape Metal Health, the mental health organisation that hosts the annual kiting extravaganza.

“We encourage learners to explore the challenges they face and how they can rise above them,” she says. Each team brings their kites to the festival on Saturday 27 October for judging and a mass fly with the other children. The prizes are R3000 (first), R2000 (second) and R1000 (third). “These prizes are awarded in both the categories (primary schools and schools for learners with special educational needs). In 2017 the top places went to Christel House in Ottery and Dorothea Special School in Stellenbosch.” In the third category, entrants have to tweet (169 characters) and enter #RiseUpAndFly. Email to events@cmh.org.za. If you enter via Facebook (43 words) you can use the same method as for a tweet. Last year’s EduKite competition winners were: Primary schools 1st – Christel House, Ottery 2nd – Silverlea Primary, Athlone 3rd – Caravelle Primary, Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain Schools for learners with special educational needs 1st – Dorothea Primary, Cloetesville, Stellenbosch (5th year in a row) 2nd – Oasis Special School, Belhar 3rd – not awarded V You could also win cash prizes. GRASSY PARK

70 not out for duo EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt

T

hey say true love lives forever, and that sentiment couldn’t ring any truer for Eddie and Cecilia Johnson (née Sassman), who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June. Born on 26 March 1924, the lanky Eddie jokes fondly about his wife being 13 days his senior, while Cecilia still manages to perform her domestic chores in their Grassy Park residence they have called home for well over half a century. “I was born in Princess Vlei Road in Southfield, been here all my life, besides being all over the world. That is where I grew up. I could walk straight down to Princess Vlei to take the horses for a ride, which was our job then. From there onwards we moved because of the segregation – they chucked us out of Southfield,” says Eddie. He recalls the landscape during the time

as being undeveloped bush, Parkwood being mostly farmland, which brings back memories of his grandfather and father, both farmers. “When the Group Areas Act was enforced, we were moved out there to Grassy Park. There were no highways, nothing. We used to come down (what is now) Victoria Road and it was all bush. Only two buses riding, private guys. We used to pay a penny for a bus from Southfield to Plumstead in those days,” recalls Eddie. Cecilia, who was born in Wynberg, is the sole surviving member of her siblings, and she attended the old Springfield Convent School. She followed her mother’s example by joining the Independent Order of True Templars, where they first met, both aged 19. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise (Proverbs 20:1). That is one of the things we said at the order. That is how we grew up. My mother lived and raised us here in

Wynberg and because my mother was very much against drinking, Eddie also joined the order and that is why they said that when we prayed, he wasn’t praying because he was watching me,” she quips with a broad smile. The couple married on 12 June 1948 at All Saints Anglican Church in Plumstead. Cecilia worked at the Mercantile-Atlas printing company until four months into the marriage when she fell pregnant and became a housewife. She explains how the family first lived in a small house and then moved back into her maternal home before settling into their current residence.“My husband’s boss was very good to us. The place we are staying in now was half done and his boss helped finance him to finish the place and we are still here,” she says. While Cecilia was a diligent housewife, Eddie was very active in and around his community, helping to establish the Good Shepherd Anglican Parish in Grassy Park, while also being a founding member of Crusaders Cricket Club, among other things, but it is the mantelpiece which bears evi-

dence to one of his favourite pastimes over the years – trophies won when racing pigeons for the Wynberg and District Board. “My late friend and I were partners. We had fun with that. It took a lot of hard work, but we really had a wonderful time. It got too much for us with the training and all that. The food also got expensive so we had to pack up and finish with all that,” he says. Both Eddie and Cecilia have sage advice for living a long life and staying married throughout. “First of all, stay away from alcohol and choose your friends wisely and partake in a sport which you enjoy and like. Stay away from going out too much. Thank God that He has been guiding me for all these years,” says Eddie, who mentions that marriage is not for the fainthearted either, but a firm foundation of belief, trust and faith has helped them both persevere through all the challenges that have come their way. “In 1958 I was at the Rand Easter Show for six weeks and my wife stayed at home. I was there again in 1960 when they shot Hendrik Verwoerd. I earned £6 a week, but there was always bread on the table,” Eddie remembers.

Directed by Robert Shenton, the play will run from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 August at the Galloway Theatre, followed by a second run from Tuesday 21 August to Sunday 2 September at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective. The play is set in 1950s Middle America in a community centre where the ladies of the Susan B Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein are gathering for their annual quiche breakfast. A satire on the melodramatic fears of America during the Cold War, all hell breaks loose when the women are under attack. What follows is a hilarious journey of self-discovery as secrets are revealed and relationships are tested, all while protecting the coveted quiche. “The play is about having fun and not taking yourself too seriously. It’s an interactive show, so the ladies also engage with the audience with a bit of improvised comedy,” says producer Regina R Malan. Making his directorial debut, Shenton is excited about bringing these characters to life. “I love a good comedy, and this particular play uses such a playful and humorous approach to how people deal with conflict, which I think we can all relate to in our daily lives. Although these characters may appear ridiculous at times, underneath it all they just want to belong.” The five ladies include Lulie (played by Regina R Malan) who is the president of the society and takes her position of leadership very seriously, Wren (played by Candice Burgess) the naive and bubbly events chair-

woman, Vern (played by Imke du Toit) the community centre’s grounds woman who loves a good-fitted pantsuit, Ginny (played by Jessica Stanley) the neurotic UK foreigner who is new to the group and has to endure her fair share of hazing, and Dale (played by Lee van der Merwe), the young historian with a fear of men and water. Written by Chicago playwrights Evan Linder and Andrew Hobgood, Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche, grew from being a punchline at a late-night party to an award-winning short play to a full-length comedy hailed Off-Broadway by The New York Times for “its raw and magnetic dementia that seems destined to attract a cult following”. The show has been performed all over the USA and on five continents, has been translated into six languages, and was selected as Best Overall Production at the 2012 New York Fringe Festival. This is another all-female production for Mish Mash Media Productions. The choice to do Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche after Othello was twofold. “After the heavy subject matter in Othello, we felt it would be good to dive into a comedy, and this play had the perfect blend of humour and human discovery.” Malan is a firm believer in representation in theatre and doesn’t classify this play as specifically a feminist or LGBTQ statement, but rather one of representation. “I am a lesbian and growing up, I never saw people like me in plays, so I think it’s important to tell these stories and show the world that people like me actually exist.” V Tickets for the first run are available at www. waterfronttheatreschool.com or call Sharon on 082 772 8867. MUNICIPAL

Illegal dumping costs pile up AMBER COURT

W

ith illegal dumping costing the City of Cape Town around R380m in the last financial year – an increase of around R30m year on year – the City is embarking on a new project to map dumping hotspots. Dumping of builders’ rubble and litter on City of Cape Town-owned land is an ongoing issue in the city as a whole, explains Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy, Xanthea Limberg. In addition, blocked sewers have also been a drain on City coffers, she says. “The Water and Sanitation Department spent approximately R270m on having to deal with sewer blockages. This resulted in the contravention of the Wastewater and Industrial Effluent Bylaw in 2017/2018,” Limberg says. “The approximate budget for solid waste, for clearing of City-owned land affected by illegal dumping, is furthermore approximately R112m. This amount was budgeted for Solid Waste, for clearing of City-owned land affected by illegal dumping of rubble and general litter for the same period. Please note that these figures are provisional.” The Wastewater and Industrial Effluent Bylaw states that “no person may discharge substances into a municipal sewer that will interfere with the free flow of sewage”. The sewer reticulation system is only geared to accept toilet waste (urine, faeces and toilet paper) and sink/basin/bath waste (water, washing liquid and soap). Common causes of blockages include rags, nappies, tampons and sanitary pads, wet wipes, condoms, general litter, building materials, and the build-up of cooking fat/ oil. When cooking oil/fat is poured or flushed down your sink and drain, it hardens and builds up on the inside of the sewer pipes, which subsequently attracts rags, hair, paper and other debris. The hardness of these blockages can also make them very difficult to clean out or unblock.

The City advises residents to rather let grease cool and harden in the pan, then scrape it along with any food scraps into some newspaper or paper towel, then dispose of this in the kitchen bin. In 2016, the cost for handling illegal dumping was R350m. The total cost of dumping for these two departments is approximately R380m for 2017/18. This shows a shocking increase in the cost of illegal dumping, Limberg says. “The City has embarked on a new project aimed at mapping all the hotspots. New mapping results are expected at the end of December 2018,” explains Limberg. “Dumping continues to plague the City and there are no signs of abatement. All money used to address the problem of illegal dumping could be much better spent assisting communities with other issues.” The fine for illegal dumping is R5000, however the courts can impose a higher penalty if they make such a determination. The problem with illegal dumping is so widespread that the allocated figure only represents what the City spends on its efforts to try to keep up with clearing waste, explains Limberg, and by no means is there an indication that this staggering cost sees the City succeeding in the fight against dumping. It is also difficult to round up the cost of the knock-on effects of this practice, Limberg states, as it obviously has impacts on the sewer system, public and environmental health, and general pleasantness of spaces whose property values are arguably negatively impacted. “In order to address illegal dumping effectively, we need residents to report those who do not make use of the available facilities to dispose of their waste. Residents can drop off any non-hazardous refuse that cannot be managed via the scheduled refuse removal service each week at one of the City’s drop-off sites,” says Limberg. VTo report illegal dumping in your community, call 0860 103 089. If you have the culprit’s vehicle registration number and/or can identify him/her, call 021 400 6157 or email solidwaste.bylaw@ capetown.gov.za.

SPCA wins cruelty case Mitchell’s Plain residents Darryl and Valmor Abrahams have been handed a R6000 fine each and three months’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, after being found guilty of animal cruelty. Last year, on 29 July, the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA encountered one of the most appalling cases of animal cruelty when trainee inspector Siviwe Noko, responded to a report of two dogs alleged to be fighting, with the owners doing nothing to stop them. According to CoGH SPCA’s spokesperson Tara McGovern, when Noko entered the property to speak with the owners, he saw the two dogs in question and witnessed a disturbing scene where one of the dogs was eating directly from the body of the other dog, which appeared to be dead. “It appears the dog was so hungry and thirsty that it had to kill the other dog to eat its flesh and lick up its blood for fluids. Alarmingly, the owners did not appear disturbed or concerned about what was happening with their dogs,” states McGovern. Noko proceeded to remove both dogs from the property and noted that both the animals were visibly emaciated and neglected. “Once the dogs were inside the SPCA vehicle, Noko then spoke with the owners regarding the matter to establish the facts.

The owners were unable to explain how their dogs came to be in such a condition. They claimed to have fed the dogs the previous Friday. However, when Noko asked if they had any dog food they said no. They then explained that they only gave the dogs water once a day from the dirty washing water used to clean clothing – Noko noted that their water bowl was incredibly filthy,” McGovern adds. Following his inspection, Noko proceeded to lay charges of animal cruelty against the couple for being in contravention of the Animals Protection Act, and for the cruel and unnecessary suffering caused to the two dogs on their property. “Just over a year later (Wednesday 1 August), both accused appeared in Mitchell’s Plain Regional Court and both Mr and Mrs Abrahams pleaded guilty to the charges of animal cruelty brought against them. “The court has sentenced both individuals to pay R6000 each and to three months imprisonment which is suspended for five years. “We support the court’s decision today and will continue to demand that the highest possible sentences are handed down to those guilty of animal cruelty.” V Report animal cruelty to 021 700 4158/9 during office hours and 083 326 1604 after hours.

PEOPLE'S POST | RETREAT Tuesday, 14 August 2018

Saving water is punishing residents At the beginning of 2018 after many discussions and complaints it was agreed that water rates would be increased instead of imposing a levy. Therefore the charges were increased in March from R4.00 +VAT to R26.50+VAT which is more than six times the original tariff. Now five months later every household is being slapped with a fixed charge which we were assured would not happen because the cost of water was being increased exponentially. In addition, every household lost 6000F per month which was free until July 2017. Now we have to pay for every liter we use. Reducing and saving water is getting us nowhere except punishment. Stand together to stop levies I do agree with the previous writers, this levy issue is a disgrace and exploitation of tax payers. Rates and tax are already applied to the valuation of the properties. What makes it right to apply levies to one’s property based on valuation when you are already being taxed? Electricity, another sore point: We are taken for a ride, what a disgrace. As much as 70% of your electricity purchase is used to subsidise the less privileged communities who own cars and pay the same price for fuel, who own a spaza shop on his or her property which generates an income. This is unacceptable, we must stand together to stop these unnecessary levies. B. JACOBS Cape Town

Electricity cost too high I refer to the letters of Hilary Finck and Deane in your issue of Tuesday 7 August, protesting the exploitative home user charge. Both those correspondents are urging us not to pay the charge. I agree with them. My home was built 15 years ago. Presumably the pre-pay metre was installed then. Previous owners and myself have read the metre, so the City does not have to pay a metre reader. Our electricity is prepaid, so the City does not have to employ a debt collector. The City writes off billions of rand in uncollected water and electricity revenue each year. We, the compliant, are apparently expected to make up the shortfall. People have a strong sense of fair play and the electricity home user charge is simply cheating. The City is adding R168.95 (the charge plus VAT) per month to my electricity cost, with no benefit to me. The slogan was once “This City works for you”. I think it has been altered to “You work for this City”. RICHARD PHILLIPS Fish Hoek

Lawless cyclists Can somebody please help me? I need to understand what transforms supposedly “normal” humans, both male and female, irrespective of age, into idiotic, brainless, simpletons when they get on to a bicycle? Oh, and before you start throwing your toys out of your cot, I have probably cycled a lot more than many of you! When they get on the road, these “cyclists” think they have been given the right to break any traffic law they wish. Traffic lights? Nah, ignore! Stop streets? Nah, ignore! Ride two, three or four abreast? Why not? Many of these cyclists, I presume, drive a vehicle for which they have received a licence after passing the required examinations. Why is it then that once they are

on a bicycle, traffic laws become irrelevant to them? Try and say something to them and they abuse you, threaten you and become violent. In the unfortunate event of an accident, the motorist of course will be blamed. Obviously, not every cyclist qualifies for the above, but the ones who do, know who they are! If you are a cyclist and you are reading this, I ask you please, please, please, look at yourself in the mirror and have a good, honest think about how you conduct yourself on the road. I, for one, and I am sure, many others, would appreciate the change in your attitude. IGGY Fish Hoek

Earphones a danger on the road On 17 September 2017, I started participating in road-running races and joined the MSA Multisport Running Club. During races, I noticed some runners with earphones connected to their mobile devices. They were listening to up-tempo music which encouraged them to jog to the beat, resulting in a diminished ability to hear oncoming vehicles. Race conveners have requested runners to refrain from this habit. More so, I

noticed that pedestrians also have the same habit of walking with earphones plugged in. The danger is that the plugged-in earphones diminish one’s ability to hear oncoming vehicles or potential attackers, and thus pose a huge safety and security risk. Be warned when plugging in earphones – it may cost you dearly. Mark RH Kleinschmidt Kenwyn

Don’t pay additional levies Here is a simple answer for all the people who are now inundated with municipal levies during these challenging times. Don’t pay the additional levies and vote for any other party in the next elections apart from the blue brigade. There are more poor people here in Cape Town than the rich and the affluent, who can easily afford the new tariffs. Make your

voice heard in the ballot box and send out a clear message that we will not tolerate their stupid schemes to further complicate our lives. I, however, urge all to use these amenities sparingly and continue with your savings mechanisms, whatever they are. ROY SAROOP Kenwyn

Racing women overtake M

otorsport racer Nashreen Schloss is proving that women can dominate the “male” industry of racing. When asked about what inspired her to be in the career of motorsport, Schloss responds: “It wasn’t intentional. A series of events led me to the track. Initially I just wanted to purchase a bumper for my car. The people I came into contact with suggested I join them at Killarney and, as they say, the rest is history.” Schloss explains the sensational feeling she gets while racing: “It is nerves initially from the starting line, followed by panic and eventually that adrenaline rush,” she explains. She loves everything about racing, but with her Gymkhana car she has had to get her hands dirty at times. “There is satisfaction in knowing that one can contribute to the end result of what your car becomes.” Schloss currently races in the Makita Supercars series at Killarney. When asked about the challenges she faces in the sport, she says: “It can be expensive and sponsorship is not always easy to come by. As a female you are stereotyped. An example is that I rarely walk into a car parts shop where I don’t get patronised or get contradicted on my request even though I am the customer.” Schloss’s achievements include being the only woman to ever win first place overall at a Witzenberg Gymkhana, in the

VA C A N C Y

22-year history of the series. She was also a part of Team Speed and Sound in 2007. Out of the approximately 30 team members spanning Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, she was the first and only driver of a sponsored vehicle. “It’s both an advantage and disadvantage. In general people are very eager to

offer help so I always have assistance when needed. No-one likes losing to a girl so the other person is always under more pressure. They don’t expect much from you, so you are the underdog, which is not a bad thing in my opinion. You do get patronised sometimes but respect is earned and you need to earn it,” explains Schloss.

Teams start campaign AVRIL FILLIES

F

ive soccer teams from Cape Town are in action this weekend when the competition in the National Football Division (NFD) kicks off. The teams are Milano United from Grassy Park, Cape Umoya United from Cape Town, Ubuntu Cape Town (formerly known as FC Cape Town) from Athlone, Stellenbosch, and Ajax Cape Town from Parow. Ajax was relegated from the Premier Soccer League, and with an appeal still pending on whether they will be allowed back into the PSL, despite matches already being played, they opted to compete this season in the NFD. Ubuntu was the “giant slayer” last year in the Nedbank Cup, a competition where sixteen teams besides the PSL teams compete against one another. They dispatched Jomo Cosmos, AmaZulu and Polokwane City before stumbling against Free State Stars in the quarter-finals of the competition. This success is due to coach Casey Prince, and the team hopes to repeat this achievement in the NFD. Waseem Isaacs from Bonteheuwel and a former player of FC Cape Town is one of the players on whom the team will depend this season. He is a veteran and with his experience the young players around him will thrive. Cape Umoyo, a Cape Town-based consortium with Roger de Sa, bought Platinum Stars and their league status in February this year. De Sa is co-owner of the club and a former coach of Ajax and Orlando Pirates. Due to the pitch at Athlone Stadium being relaid, all home matches of the Cape

Town sides will be played at Cape Town Stadium. This means that they share the stadium with Cape Town City. . Cape Town City is through to the semifinals of the MTN 8 and will play against Kaizer Chiefs. The Citizens beat Maritzburg United on Sunday 12 August by 1-0, thanks to Keenan Cupido’s header. The NFD fixtures for the weekend are: Saturday 18 August: Stellenbosch vs Royal Eagles at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Sunday 19 August: Ajax vs Jomo Cosmos at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa; Cape Umoyo United vs TS Galaxy at Kameelrivier Stadium in Mpumalanga; Ubuntu Cape Town vs Richards Bay at uMhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay.
