Preserving history The public may now learn more about the history of their community from where it happened as Art in Athlone gallery has moved to the historic Thornton Road. Mayor listens to residents NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
M
ayor Dan Plato will soon be meeting with the residents of Heideveld to assess the housing issue in the area. This was an agreement between Plato and the delegates (a group of residents) that was sent to appeal for his attention on Thursday 18 July. “I can confirm that a meeting is to
be held with the residents to hear their concerns and questions. I will be visiting the Heideveld area in the coming weeks and our engagements will continue,” Plato says. Community activist, Vanessa Adriaanse says they will be taking the mayor for a walkabout “where we will expose all the evidence we are talking about” today ( Tuesday 30 July) between 14:00 and 18:00 Their concerns include irregularities
with a previous housing project. Despite saying some of the houses were illegally sold, residents say they were poorly built. They say other houses have leaks originating from the roofs or walls and plumbing issues. The sewer leak is blamed for a clogged dam behind Table Mountain Street between Misty Cliff and Ridge Peak Streets. Cheslyn Langeveldt lives just opposite the drain and says sometimes it floods. Dogs
drown and it poses a health risk to children. Residents also complain about delayed or undelivered bills (rate accounts), lack of transparency about subsidy costs and the value of the houses. They also want Plato to witness living conditions at the Cathkin informal settlement where residents say former backyard dwellers are refused basic services. V To page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 They reached to Plato after claiming that their ward councillor Anthony Moses failed to address their issues. Moses says he is aware of the concerns. Mayco member for human settlement, Malusi Booi commented on the complaints about the value and poor infrastructure. He says subsidy for the houses is R170 000 per house inclusive of the top structure and services. He says the amount is reflected in the Deed of Sale.
People's Post is published by WP Media, a subsidiary of Media24.
“Once houses are completed, the City’s Valuation Department undertakes municipal valuations that are used to determine the rates that are being charged. The municipal valuation may, therefore, differ from the subsidy amount. Beneficiaries of state-subsidised housing receive the units at no charge but must take responsibility for rates and water accounts once the property is transferred, as well as for the general maintenance of their new house,” says Booi.

fatty acids and proteins, and the transmission of nerve impulses. The human body contains around 25g of magnesium, of which most is stored in the skeletal system. The rest is present in muscle, soft tissues, and bodily fluids. The company was founded in October 2017 and is based in Tyger Valley. “Medical bills destroyed me and I realised there must be something more and that is when I started with magnesium. I worked for a medical aid company and I would see how medical funds were depleted quickly, especially with athletes,” she says. “Athletes would go back and forth to doctors and never recover. It was like the more tablets they get, the sicker they get. After researching the magnesium, I thought that if I could educate children about living a healthier life, then they could put bread on the table,” she says. Knowing the restorative benefits of magnesium, Niemann started sponsoring athletes, who saw a remarkable increase in healing and reduced durations of sport-related injuries. Niemann says many of the children they now work with have lost either one or both parents and end up becoming the breadwinners in their households. This results in them not looking after their bodies. Niemann believes that assisting in improving their health, it assists them in putting bread on the table, through prize money or sponsorships for young talent. The recent addition to their athletes and ambassadors is also Paralympic athlete Hylton Langenhoven, who is using and endorsing the benefits of the product leading up to the upcoming Paralympic Games. “The product is a tool. With every product that is bought, it makes it possible for us to sponsor an athlete. There are so many athletes who need support,” she says. This is sometimes financial support to assist in getting young athletes to training camps or access to sessions where they can

fter her 16-year-old son was hospitalised around 10 years ago, Benita Niemann set out to investigate the benefits of a mineral few acknowledge as important. Magnesium, she would come to realise, is one of the most important minerals in your body. “As a single mother of three, I basically lost everything because of medical bills. My son ended up in ICU. He was a flatline. At that time, my total hospital bill came to R200 000. It bankrupted me,” says Niemann, founder of Magnesium Café. “My son had liver damage and the doctors said they could not give him any medication because it was too strong for his liver. They pulled him through with a Panado drip and prayer.” Following her son’s ordeal and recovery, Niemann started researching magnesium and founded Magnesium Café. She had sold other products before finding Doctor Frank Muller who assisted her in developing Mag1, a magnesium mineral supplement, designed for maximum absorption into the body. Magnesium plays a role in more than 350 enzymatic processes in the body, which include the metabolism of food, synthesis of

The athletes are from all over the country and all use the product to assist them in improving their performance and healing. “I wanted to start a non-profit organisation (NPO), but recently joined up with an existing NPO, the Hendrick Ramaala Sports Foundation. They heard about me sponsoring the athletes and asked if I would like to partner with them. They are quite well known with supporting marathon athletes,” she says. “We are hoping companies will get involved through our NPO partnership and that people will get involved because these athletes need a lot of support.” Each bottle of 30 tablets cost only R99. Gallery strives to preserve history NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
T
he Art in Athlone gallery aims to preserve the history of its community while providing space for creativity at their new premises in Thornton Road. The gallery is the brainchild of retired Kenny Alexander, a senior resident. It specialises in, but is not limited to visual art and Kenny works with his family to narrate stories of Athlone as well as the social issues faced by the citizens through art. It is full of different paintings, with most of them carrying an emotion-evoking connotation. These include the paintings from the apartheid era including the unforgotten Trojan Horse Memorial, the old and popular buildings in the community, to significant market places and paintings highlighting issues around depression, gender-based violence and inequality. He recently made a painting of John Fredericks, an award-winning author who passed on recently. The gallery was started from his home in June last year and a year later it moved to the new premises. He is planning an official
launch that will take place on Saturday 24 August. According to Kenny’s wife, Deirdre Alexander, this was due to limited space and growing demand from the public. Kenny, through the help of his family, managed to get a “perfect spot” to showcase the work, “luckily at a very historic” part of Athlone. This is because the place is only a few miles away from the significant Trojan Horse Memorial, where three residents were allegedly brutally killed by the police under the apartheid regime and it is on the same road as the Al- Some of Kenny exander Sinton Secondary School where learners used to gather back then. It is in an old church building that has not been used for a long time. Kenny says he had always loved art and uses it to express himself and tell the untold stories. He says Athlone is among communities
from the traumas of the past. “We get people who become emotional from looking at some of the paintings, saying they bring back memories of the past and portrays the real life of ordinary citizens,” Kenny says. They also run an exhibition between 09:00 and 15:00 on weekdays. It’s open to the public and various activities will be taking place at a minimum cost. Deirdre says they will only be charging a fee to cover costs of the programmes which will range Alexander’s paintings that he says depicts the story of Athlone. painting lessons, PHOTO: NOMZAMO YUKU from craft, knitting to talks by that are not well recognised and its potential different expects and hosts shows. s Winston Moses from Parow is receiving intensive health care for his kidney, his peers in the music industry are joining hands to raise funds to help pay his bill. They are organising the Band Aid for Winston Moses show at Club West End in Rylands Estate on Friday 16 August. According to a statement from the organisers, money raised at the event will go towards Winston’s medical costs and day-today living expenses. The line-up will include Salome, Allou April, Claire Phillips, Leslie Kleinsmith, Vuvu Khumalo, Uncle Cal, Signature SA, Just Us, Ramaine Barreiro, Jabez, Protégé, Naz Stage, Mr Magic, Niyaaz Goolam, Brandon Leigh from KFM and international star Choko from the Caribbean, and is still expected to grow. Calvin Peters, a custodian of the Band Aid projects, says he has seen this movie play out way too often. “These guys dedicate their lives to making music and entertaining the public, but being a musician is an unthankful job and most of them don’t earn enough to afford medical aid. “That is why I appeal to all musicians, club owners and the music-loving public to support this worthy cause,” Peters says.
Antoinette and Winston Moses.
Winston’s health took a knock while he was watching his son’s soccer match on Saturday 18 May. He collapsed and has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 of kidney failure disease. He is currently at home. According to his wife, Antoinette Moses, Winston has undergone two operations before dialysis and doctors recently discovered a blockage following the first operation, which led to him going for a second round. “He has not started with dialysis yet due to a complication following the first operation. Doctors are looking at it and he is going back (to the hospital) tomorrow,” says Antoinette. Winston says his wish is to have a transplant and continue to make a difference in his community. He also wants to make more people aware of donating through his music. His dialysis treatment would cost him between R200 000 to R300 000 per year. Winston who is a producer, arranger and sound engineer has been in the industry since 1989. His journey started when he began touring to different countries and he moulded his career in Johannesburg “where I was exposed to the world of production and recording as I was a recording artist, singing and arranging.” When he moved back to Cape Town in the 1990’s Winston joined a Band called Encore, did gigs all over Cape Town and says the highlights of his career are to always perform on stage and be creative in the musical environment like during studio work. “I love it so much,” says Winston. V The show starts at 20:00 and tickets are available at Webticket. For more information contact 082 950 8625 or info@unclecalmusic.com.

Students lead the way to health TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
A
group of fourth-year medical students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) did a health promotion project to educate mothers about HIV and the importance of getting tested throughout pregnancy – and beyond – to reduce mother to child HIV transmission. The students, Angela Strydom, Themba Ndovi, Nomalizo Duze, Bradley Thompson, Michelle Yi-Tin Yuan and Alana Williams held talks with the mothers and nurses at the Vanguard Maternity and Obstetric Unit (MOU). They want to implement a long-term project to improve clinical management of HIV testing in mothers and they have been working with one of the doctors at the clinic. The students designed a stamp that will be placed in the Road to Health Booklet (a booklet mothers are given once the baby is born and is used at every check-up visit) to encourage HIV testing and keep a record of these tests. They have been working on this project since the beginning of June but it was implemented on Wednesday 24 July and their stamp is going to be rolled out in the next few weeks. Williams says students are allocated different communities and have to design a health promotion project that addresses the needs or problems of the community. “We were placed at Vanguard and through our engagement with one of the doctors who works there, Dr Mosedi Namane, we identified that a problem is mother-to-child transmission of HIV after pregnancy or while the mother is breastfeeding,” she says. “We also did a presentation (today) where
Seated are Themba Ndovi and Alana Williams, and in the back row is Dr Mosedi Namane, Michelle Yi-Tin Yuan, Angela Strydom, Bradley Thompson, Duze and Sister Mpo. we educated the mothers about HIV and held a discussion with the nurses. This is the first time that we were actively involved in health promotion for patients,’’ says Williams. Asked about why they chose Vanguard MOU, Williams told People’s Post that the doctor who was working at the clinic brought this issue up with them and therefore they decided to create an intervention
to highlight this issue. Williams adds on the importance of testing for mother and child. “Firstly, for the mother, it is important for her health and it will also ensure that she is healthy to take care of her baby. The sooner the mother gets tested, the sooner HIV can be picked up. The mother can start treatment and the chances of transmission decrease significantly. It is also important for the lifelong health of the
baby,” explains Williams. Williams adds: “We feel incredibly proud to be able to implement an intervention that will have a lasting impact on the community. HIV is a very important health concern in South Africa. By doing this project we hope to empower women to take charge of their own health, their sexuality and help them during their transition in motherhood.”

Matric challenge a success ylands Library hosted the eighth Matric Challenge on Tuesday 23 July. The programme is designed to bring the set work papers for Grade 12 learners to life and help prepare them for examinations. “The importance of reading cannot be emphasised enough and by making it fun and interactive, we hope to instil a love for reading in as many young people as we can reach,” says Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. “Set work in high school is often seen as a chore, but with the Matric Challenge learners are shown a creative way of looking at the prescribed work and learning at the same time.” The Matric Challenge started eight years ago as a Friends of Rylands library initiative – in association with the passionate staff at the facility. “Some of the aims of the Matric Challenge are to encourage teenagers to read with understanding, improve their study skills, understand the set work from different viewpoints, create a competitive learning environment and provide learners with an opportunity to meet with peers from other schools,” says Badroodien.
The first competition took place with two participating schools, Rylands High School and Dural Islam High School. This year, eight high schools from the surrounding area and a few from the greater Cape Town area participated. The schools are Crystal House, Athlone High, Rylands High, Gardens Commercial High, Oaklands High, Manenberg High, The Leadership College, and Al Azhar High. “I commend all the learners who participated as it shows a commitment to their education and a willingness to acquire new learning skills. As they start a period of intense study before the final exams I wish them all the best and encourage them to make use of the facilities available at our libraries,” says Badroodien. Each school had two teams consisting of five participants and they were given questions on their set workbooks, with the permission to discuss answers before writing them down. The challenge included four-set workbooks: Othello, Hamlet, The Life of Pi and The Picture of Dorian Gray. First-time entrants, Crystal House in Ottery walked away as winners.

Schools excel in battle of the blood donors E
ducational institutions were called on by the Western Cape Blood Services (WCBS) to challenge each other to see who donates the most units of blood, and the institutions brought it on. Some of the schools that took part in the battle included Bergvliet High, Plumstead High, Wynberg Boys High, SACS High, Livingstone High, Windsor High, Pinelands High and Oudemolen Technical High to mention a few. This annual campaign titled “Battle of the Blood Donors” aims to increase blood collections within this period and ultimately recruit new donors. This year the battle took place from Tuesday 2 April until Thursday
23 May. A total of 56 educational institutions took part and 28 challenges took place. This year 939 new donors were registered and a total of 3 037 units of blood were collected within the campaign period. A total of 4 362 people attended clinics and showed interest in donating blood. WCBS corporate public relations officer, Michelle Vermeulen says this number is a remarkable improvement since 2018 and truly shows the commitment and great spirit among the youth. “The winners of each challenge were determined by a pro-rata formula looking at the potential eligible donors, the number of new donors, attendance and units collected
at the blood donation clinic. Using a pro-rata formula made the process fair towards smaller educational institutions,” she says. Vermeulen says they are proud to announce that Meridian Pinehurst School in Durbanville won the overall battle and came in the first place. They now have the official bragging right of the battle and won an additional R1 000 voucher toward the school’s educational efforts. “In second place is Claremont High School who battled against Zwaanswyk High School – both schools only recently joined our blood donation family and really excelled in this challenge. In third place is Protea Heights Academy who beat their oppo-
nents Brackenfell High School in a true knock-out round,” she explains, adding that the efforts made by each of the schools were truly remarkable. “One school did a talk at a nearby mosque, SMSs were sent to parents, peer promoters dressed up, clinics were decorated and random raffles were held at the clinic. “Live Instagram posts were done, a welcome banner was made and Blood Buddy welcomed donors,” she said. She continued: “Battle props were used to create a vibe, schools sent each other photos of their clinic to show them they mean business and one school even had a welcome,” she concludes.

MUNICIPAL SERVICES
Libraries have the write stuff
Regular blood donors urgently needed Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) only has enough blood for two days and is appealing to new and regular donors to donate blood to bring the level back to five days. Michelle Vermeulen, corporate public re-
lations officer at WCBS says: “The contributing factors to the blood shortage are that regular donors suffer from colds and flu and therefore can’t donate blood, as well as the current winter chill that we have experi-
enced, deterring some donors from donating.” Group O stocks are critically low. They are appealing to everyone in the group O blood type to donate blood at their nearest blood donation clinic. V To find out where you can donate or what the criteria is visit www.wcbs.org.za or phone 021 507 6300.
T
he City of Cape Town’s libraries have partnered with the Open Book Festival organisers to give storytellers, writers and poets an opportunity to see their work in print through the #WritingMyCity project. The best contributions will be printed in an anthology, which will be launched at this year’s festival in September. The competition has closed and the final selection for the anthology is being made. “A total of 187 entries were received from librarians and patrons. These included stories and poems in Afrikaans, English, Xhosa and Kaaps. All the work that will be selected will focus on an aspect of our beautiful city,” Badroodien said. Budding storytellers and writers were asked to submit their stories about Cape Town and creative writing workshops were facilitated at libraries to find the voices, said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. He continued: “It has given participants a platform to celebrate and deepen our understanding of who and what makes Cape Town such a wonder. It is also providing an opportunity for writers, young and old, to see their work in print and share their diverse stories. “Open Book appointed a judging panel to make the final selection of 40 contributions and I am excited to see and read more about our diverse city,” said Badroodien. Speaking on the writers’ narratives, he said: “The city is home to a multitude of different voices and the anthology will give us a glimpse into some of the stories which make up the colourful fabric of Cape Town.” The printed anthology will be available through the library network and also available for sale at the Open Book Festival taking place from Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 September.

CITY BOWL
Unemployed assisted with online registration U
nemployed people were assisted to register on the Lulaway database at the Cape Town Library on Thursday 18 July. The registration drive was held by the City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services Directorate which is working in partnership with Lulaway. Lulaway is a workforce development project that assists young people with job readiness training. The public was shown how to use the computers with free internet in a City library. The internet is provided by SmartCape, a public access initiative by the City to increase digital literacy and skills for its residents, with a bias towards those who remain severely impacted by the digital divide. One of the City’s strategic focus areas is leveraging technology to help improve the lives of its residents. “The SmartCape programme was initiated in July 2002 when
we had installed computers in six public libraries across the City, on a pilot basis. “Six months later there were 3 000 registered SmartCape users.” says Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle. She adds: “Today, there are over 450 000 registered users who can get up to 45 minutes of free internet use per session per day, across 670 computers in 104 libraries.” This initiative has grown computer literacy in communities across Cape Town. It is enriching the users’ knowledge and supports small business growth across the metro. Since the launch of SmartCape, it has also expanded its digital literacy efforts through various learner and training initiatives. It still remains the platform where many residents are exposed to the internet on a desktop for the first time.
Many unemployed people gathered at the Cape Town Library and were assisted by the City’s staff members to register on Lulaway.
Mopping up operations continue The disaster operations centre logged 43 flooding-related incidents; 122 power outages across the metropole; nine incidents of trees that had blown over or fallen branches and two incidents where roofs were blown off as a result of the recent weather conditions. Disaster Risk Management Centre is coordinating the City of Cape Town’s response to recent incidents. The reported incidents includes: . 3640 structures affected in Masiphumelele, Imizamo Yethu, Khayelitsha, Burundi, Nomzamo and Wallacedene. . Fallen trees were reported in Parow, Edgemead, Crawford, Panorama, Durbanville and Brackenfell. . Roads flooded across the city – most notably in Wallacedene, as well as Pelican
Park, Ottery and Diep River. . Power outages in Strand, Bonteheuwel, Observatory, Noordhoek, Joe Slovo Park, Athlone, Wynberg, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Sunnydale, Rondebosch, Philippi, Mitchell’s Plain, Hout Bay and Plumstead. “This situation will change as repair teams make their way through the list of reported incidents. We ask that residents please bear with us, as assessments have to be completed for purposes of record before assistance like flood kits can be provided. The City did make emergency shelters available to the affected communities; however, these offers have not been accepted,” says Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. Following the latest winter task team
meeting on Wednesday 24 July, blockages in the stormwater system emerged as one of the biggest concerns. These blockages are the result of illegal dumping, but also people storing items in the drains. “Another concern raised is the quality of information provided when members of the public log service requests or alert us to emergencies. This has the potential to slow down response times or results in the incorrect agency responding. A simple example is, if the emergency is at City rental stock, we ask that callers indicate such because that too will help determine the correct department to lead the response. Therefore, my appeal to the public when reporting any incidents during heavy weather episodes, but also just in general, is to
give as much information as possible, that our response matches their need,” says Smith. The City reminds residents of the following tips when making a call for help: . Once you have dialled the number and are through to the operator, give them your contact number first so they can call you back if you lose connection; . Always give your full name; . Describe your location as accurately as you can as the operator might not know your neighbourhood as you do. . Give the details of your emergency and let the operator guide the conversation; . Stay on the line for as long as you can, as operators will be able to identify helpful information from the call while staying connected.
Skills test for coders Programme Olympiad 2019 is looking for learners who can code. The olympiad is a problem-solving contest and challenges learners to practise and improve their skills. “The Programming Olympiad builds coding skills. Even writing a programme to solve just one of the tasks is an achievement. The experi-
ence of taking part widens horizons for the future,” says Programme Olympiad manager, Michael Cameron. Learners from any school can enter if they can code. The first round started at schools from yesterday (Monday 29 July) to Friday 2 August. Learners use a computer to solve
three problems in an hour. The top 50% per age group nationwide receive certificates. The second round will be on Wednesday 21 August and will be more challenging. Participants will have two hours to write programmes to solve four problems. Learners can practice past problems online if they are keen. V Schools can register at http://olympiad.org.za/programming-olympiad/register/

These magicians will be taking part in the 2019 Western Cape Junior Magician Championships, at Bergvliet High School on Saturday 7 September. This annual battle is held by the prestigious College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation, and sees the Western Cape’s top magical teens face off in two categories: the intimate and bespoke art of
Close-Up magic and the spectacular grandeur of Stage magic. This year’s line-up of competitors include Alfred Baba, Liam Hewitson, Eneo Hollenbach, Luvo Mrolota, Sahil Samlal and Jenna Shorkend. Now in its 39th year of teaching the art of magic the College of Magic, a non-profit organisation (NPO) and the only one of its kind in the world, is ecstatic to once again present this popular annual charming event. Director and founder of the College of Magic David Gore says: “The championship is the first opportunity for our students and contestants from
around the province to get a taste of the real-life competitive spirit of professional magic and showmanship. “I’ve had a sneak peek behind the wizard’s curtain to see what the contestants have prepared and I can guarantee the judges and spectators that they are in for several incredible treats. Join us this September and see the wonderful magical sports for yourselves.” V For more information about attending the Western Cape Junior Magician Championships and the College of Magic, visit www.collegeofmagic.com, phone 021 683 5480 or follow them on Facebook @thecollegeofmagic.

Right people key to success of business PROMOTION To be in business for almost 22 years is an achievement in itself but would not be possible without the right employees. This is how Nathaniel Roberts, owner of Timbacore in Stikland, sums up his success through the years since his company was established in 1998. To make a success of a business is a miracle and you’ll have to deal with trials and new challenges on the way. “International statistics show that a very small percentage of companies make it past the 10-year mark. The odds are in my favour as I am celebrating 21 years in business,” he said. If he and any employee make a mistake, he refers to the mistake as ‘paying school fees’ and stepping stones. “It is difficult to get the right staff. A lot of people start or get chances but not all live up to your expectations. I have employees with 21 years or less experience at Timbacore and they eat, sleep and live Timbacore. Staff that I’ve depended on over the years are Theo Gomes from Retreat, Thembinkosi Qhashana from Khayelitsha, Roland Fortuin from Delft and Fikile Damba from Khayelitsha. Two of my salesmen who started right at the bottom as general workers, Jerome Meintjies from Delft and Shawn Williams from Blue Downs are all advertisements for Timbacore,” he said. He and Gomes worked together at another company in 1994 and when Roberts started his own in 1998, Gomes joined him. “Theo is an example to all. He is always at work and the only time I can recall that he took off, was when his parents passed on. The customers love him, he loves his job and he is a very humble person. He cannot stand dishonesty and you know exactly where you stand with him,” Roberts stated. Timbacore does site installations and when an unforeseen problem arises, the company takes responsibility.
The staff of Timbacore in Stikland. “A brand is very important. I can recall when I started my first business, customers would not necessarily pay a deposit because they didn’t know me. Therefore, trust is important, in the brand and in the person that the customer is dealing with. They usually compare a new brand with established ones and tend to forget that each brand has its own rules. “Through the years I have made sure that my brand, Timbacore, is advertised on the radio, in magazines, brochures, on the front page of the Yellow Pages and on front pages of various newspapers – all to make the public aware of the brand,” he said. He also has incentives – performance bonuses and commission – for his employees as an encouragement to work harder. Roberts started in Maitland in 1998 with four staff members doing installations. He opened the first retail shop in 2001 at premises in Durban Road, Tyger Valley and then moved it to High Street in 2003. “When I started all properties were barren land and I had to put up structures for offices and storage myself. I only moved to Stikland in 2005 and from 500m² in Durban Road we are now on 9 000m² in Stikland. I also opened my first factory in 2005 which is now situated opposite our main gate.” – Avril Fillies
Use reputable timber suppliers The Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA), the SA timber engineering industry’s professional body, wishes to reiterate the importance of using reputable timber suppliers or merchants whose timber complies with the relevant characteristic values. “We encourage our members and the industry at large to remain steadfast in selecting and using only compliant structural timber that is certified by either of the only accreditation bodies currently in South Africa: The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and South African Technical Auditing Services (SATAS), who certify products in compliance with the relevant standards,” says Amanda Obbes, ITCSA General Manager. It is critical that standards are maintained at all times and that all timber produced and destined for the SA structural market, is compliant. As such, it is expected that local as well as interna-
tional manufacturers of structural timber destined for the SA market, will be certified by a South African-based ISO 17065 accredited Product Certification Body, which is also applicable to the neighbouring states (Swaziland and Zimbabwe). “We request that all members to be aware of the need for compliance with national legislation and to not make use of either locally produced timber or imports that do not comply with SA standards and requirements,” Obbes concludes. The institute was established 45 years ago to self-regulate the engineered timber roof structure industry and to provide design, manufacturing, erection, inspection and certification for compliance with inter alia SANS 10400 and SANS 10082, where engineering rational designs are applicable. International guest artists join ‘Sleeping Beauty’ cast
DANCE THEATRE
‘Beyond’ takes people on a journey I

ndoni Dance Academy in Pinelands and partners will present a new production at the Artscape Theatre called Beyond on Sunday 25 August. With performances – and the grand finale – woven together and directed by Indoni Dance Academy artistic director, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, Beyond highlights the creativity, diversity and the sheer joy of breaking down the silos, going beyond ourselves, and coming together in dance. Beyond today is tomorrow with all its possibilities, and the start of a powerful dance collective. In a show of strength and unity, Beyond features performances by over 120 dancers from the Indoni Dance Academy, Dance Theatre Africa, Figure of 8, Jika Madinga, Unmute, Nqaba, Janine Booysens, Alexander Sinton High, Jazzart and Is’thatha. Each company has also chosen dancers from their outreach groups to guide them on the path to a future in dance.
Individual works are choreographed by each company. Beyond takes young dancers from these groups and affords them practical experience to the process, dedication and the hours of rehearsal required. They will have the opportunity to work alongside their role models within their own company, and also the leading dancers, choreographers and trainers of all the companies involved. It promises to transport audiences on a journey into the uniqueness of current African contemporary dance in South Africa. Audiences will experience South Africa’s richness and catch a glimpse of its bright, exciting future. The Indoni Academy was established in 2014 with the vision to become a worldclass, sustainable performing arts academy for talented youth. V Shows will run at 15:00 and 18:00, and tickets cost R100 per person, R50 for students and are available through Computicket.

Sleeping Beauty will return to the Artscape Opera House from Saturday 17 to Saturday 31 August, featuring an exciting cast of talented performers from across the planet. Performed to a score set by Russian composer Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty is a timeless story that follows Princess Aurora’s 100-year sleep and magical awakening told through ballet. “We are honoured to be welcoming our international guest artists who will be joining us for selected performances,” says Debbie Turner, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cape Town City Ballet. “Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond Sarah Lamb’s control, she is no longer able to join Cape Town City Ballet for this season but hopes to do so in the near future. “As a wonderful replacement, we are thrilled to welcome Tatiana Melnik who trained with Vadim at Perm Ballet School and is currently a principal of the Hungarian National Ballet.” The title roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund are divided between four performers. South African born ballet-dancer, Andile Ndlovu, is set to portray Prince Florimund on the opening two nights. Ndlovu, who was recently nominated for a Benois de la Danse Award in the category of Best Male Dancer, will be sharing the spotlight with co-lead American-born ballerina Precious Adams of the English National Ballet, portraying Princess Aurora.
Also playing the roles this year are Vadim Muntagirov – principal dancer at the Royal Ballet, and Benois de la Danse Award recipient (Best Male Dancer); and Hungarian National Ballet principal-ballerina, Melnik. “I’m so looking forward to returning to Cape Town and dancing with Tatiana at these performances,” says Muntagirov. “We trained at Perm Ballet School in Russia and this will be our first time dancing in Sleeping Beauty together. Tatiana is a beautiful ballerina, and it’s going to be a joyful experience.” With set and costumes designed by acclaimed South African artist, Peter Cazalet, and lighting design for the production done by multi-award winning set technician, Wilhelm Disbergen – this seasonal production of Sleeping Beauty promises to be one not-tomiss-out-on experience. As an additional treat for eager audiences, Cape Town City Ballet will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra during the 19:30 performances on Saturday 17, Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Wednesday 28 August. The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will also accompany the Cape Town City Ballet at the 15:00 performances on Sunday 18 and Saturday 31 August. V Tickets are priced from R180 to R695 with concessions for pensioners, scholars and block bookings of 10 or more people through Computicket on 0861 915 8000, online at www.computicket.com or any Shoprite Checkers outlet.

Local softball landscape shaken up NOORE NACERODIEN
T
he Cape Town Softball Association, formerly known as the Western Province Softball Federation, held its 27th annual general meeting on Sunday 28 July at the Turfhall Softball Stadium. The newly-elected executive committee is the youngest committee ever to be elected to administer the sport in Cape Town since unification in 1992, with all the elected officials still playing, which augurs well for the sport in Cape Town. Newly-elected chairperson Hayley Carolus, who plays for Battswood Softball Club, thanked the clubs for having the confidence in the new group. “We will work together for a better association and in the interest of the game of softball. Our starting foundation blocks should be softball first. I am here to serve softball and our clubs,” said Carolus. She will feel comfortable having Devonshire Rovers’ Bradley Johnson by her side as her deputy chairperson. Tantasport’s Nawaal Nacerodien will see to the secretarial duties with Samantha
Jones from Falcons taking care of the association’s coffers as the treasurer. Excell Dodgers’ Dwain Kerchhoff will look after the youth with Nicole Alexander from Westridge Yankees taking the reins of development director and Pirates’ Denver Anthony looking after the technical portfolio. Filling up the compliment of the committee is Westridge Yankees stalwart Candice Bull will head up the transformation portfolio. Social media has been flooded with congratulatory messages with the hope that the sport will flourish once more. “May you serve with pride and integrity as you lead softball into a new chapter of hope,” said Dianne Morgan. Cape Town has been the stronghold of softball in the country for many years at all levels of the sport. It is hoped that this new young group can reignite that flame. Former coach and umpire, Preston Ringquest, said: “May the youth prosper and take softball in Cape Town back to where it deserves to be.” The local softball season is expected to kick off in October. V If you are interested call 081 748 1798.
Newly-elected Cape Town Softball Association chairperson, Hayley Carolus.
HANOVER PARK LEAPS OVER HOSTS: Hanover Park’s Ashwin Misland (centre) and Yanga Xaga of Wanderers FC (left) are both beaten by the pace of the ball in mid-air during the quarter-final of the Engen Knockout Challenge played in Langa on Saturday 27 July. Hanover Park won 1-0, but went on to lose 4-1 on penalties to Cape Town City in the semi-finals. Ubuntu was crowned the eventual winners of the cup after beating Cape Town City 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. PHOTO: RASHIED ISAACS
COLLEGIANS YOUNGSTERS BRAVE IN DEFEAT: Uzair Jappie of Collegians’ u.19 team (right) can’t escape the attention of Hampton High School’s Patrick Silcox during the English school’s rugby tour of Cape Town on Saturday 27 July at Kriefgat in Mitchell’s Plain. The young Collegians team showed character in defence by restricting their stronger opponents to 17 points without reply. PHOTO: RASHIED ISAACS

Local lad flipping boards in LA A
fter shattering yet another Guinness World Record recently, Athlone-born Jean-Marc Johannes was in Los Angeles competing in the second round of the prestigious, global Street League Skateboarding (SLS) series. The competition, which ended on Sunday 28 July, was stop two of the 2019 World Tour, with the first having taken place in London earlier this year and will be Johannes’ first time competing in LA. Founded in 2010 by renowned pro skateboarder and host of MTV’s Ridiculousness, Rob Dyrdek, the Street League Skateboarding is the premier international competitive series in professional skate-
Jean-Marc Johannes
boarding and showcases an international roster of skating’s elite pros. Before leaving for the States, Johannes said the chance to skate with the world’s elite is a big opportunity for him. “In skateboarding, it’s considered an honour to receive an invitation to the SLS. I’ve grown up watching events like these and to be selected to be part of this season’s is a dream come true. It’s the highest level of street skateboarding in the world and it will be assisting me greatly in accumulating points for the Olympic Games ahead,” he said. At each indoor SLS event, arenas are transformed into custom concrete skate plazas, challenging the pros to be in-
novative and take the progression of skateboarding to new highs as a selection of worldclass skateboarders compete for the largest purse in skateboarding. The event carries all the more weight with pro-skaters vying for the chance to prove themselves ahead of Tokyo 2020, where skateboarding will make its Olympic debut as one of the most exciting new developments in the Summer Games. Johannes also achieved his second Guinness World Record when he broke Dyrdek’s 15 year-long record for the most fakie flips in one minute recently, one of skate boarding’s most difficult manoeuvres.
