A shocking demo for youth

Sergeant Alain Petersen set off a second smoke bomb at Marine Primary School.

RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

S

tun grenades, smoke bombs and a very well-trained Rottweiler made for an impressive demonstration by police at Marine Primary School last week. In an effort to curb the crime rates in highrisk areas, the City of Cape Town’s K9 unit

visited the primary school in Ocean View on Thursday 25 July to inform the Grade 7 learners of the consequences of crime, with a special emphasis on the capabilities of their specially trained dogs. Sergeant Alain Petersen opened the presentation with a talk to both educate the learners and gauge their knowledge on the types of crimes that take place – from the use

of drugs to the use of weapons. Speaking to the learners on the role played by the dogs, Petersen said: “We don’t defend ourselves with our hands, we use our dogs. Before we draw this firearm here, we have a dog to use – and I must trust that dog with my life.” He added that dogs are used because they can find criminals in a way that people can-

not; using their heightened sense of hearing and smell. “The demonstration is for the upliftment of the community; to tell them about the consequences of their actions, who they mix with and also to show them what we do with the dog unit – which dogs we use and why we use them,” Petersen continued. The learners were able to get a first-hand experience of the techniques used by the police officers of the K9 unit to confuse and distract criminals. Petersen, assisted by Sergeant Lincoln Olivier, shocked the learners by setting off stun grenades and smoke bombs; which in a real-life situation would be used to cause a diversion while the trained dogs sniff out criminals. Conan is the five-year-old Rottweiler, a

patrol dog for the unit, who showed his capabilities and sheer strength as he was unleashed on Petersen, who was only protected by the specialised gear used to train the dogs. Joshua Holies, a learner who attended the demonstration, was impressed by the display of skills from Conan. He was also encouraged to remain on the right path. “They taught us discipline and what drugs can do to us and the sergeant also told us what

would happen if we’re not disciplined and obedient,” he said. In conclusion, Petersen explained that his passion is what motivates him. “I love this job,” he said, adding that educating the children is of the utmost importance to help reduce crime. The demonstration was organised by Sergeant Riedewaan Isaacs and Sergeant Leon Fortuin of Ocean View Police Station, in collaboration with the Cape Town K9 Unit.

School, last week. The mural was designed by a Grade 9 learner; with Mowers, Hendricks and the volunteer programme, Projects Abroad, being brought on the project to create a large scale replica of the piece on the school wall. Speaking to his motivation to do the mural, Mowers says he wants to encourage people to express themselves through their creativity and by telling their stories in any way they know how. “Here’s an opportunity to tell someone younger, that you can tell your own story and hopefully in future, you can tell someone else’s story so that stories in each community live on and you build a legacy for the community,” he says. The duo has launched their initiative, Project Wall to Wall, to help build these legacies by doing commissioned paintings for anyone looking to create display pieces. Mowers concludes: “What we want to tell people is that if just 10 people can do so much, imagine what we could do as a community. We want to start putting out positive things – and this will not be the last.” V For more information contact Keenan Mowers at the Sozo Foundation on 021 825 5529.

Surfing clinic attracts record number A

daptive Surfing Clinic held in Muizenberg attracted a record number of grass-roots adaptive surfers and volunteers. The clinic, hosted on Sunday 21 July by Surf Emporium, also marked the official launch of the Roxy Davis Foundation as one of the drivers of grass-roots adaptive surfing in South Africa. The foundation is a nonprofit organisation (NPO) that aims to affect meaningful, evidence-based change in people’s lives by improving their mental and physical well-being through ocean based therapy. The clinic also celebrated the launch of an exciting partnership with Virgin Active South Africa as part of its Changing Business For Good initiative. The collaborators aim to bring exercise to people with disabilities. Virgin Active sponsored five adaptive surfboards for the Adaptive Surfing programme. These boards

are specially customised for surfers with disabilities. Employees of the gym and their members joined the enthusiastic team of over 70 volunteers who are integral in making these clinics possible. The foundation’s ambassador and Protea cricketer Dale Steyn, who is an avid surfer, supported the event and enjoyed meetings all the adaptive surfing participants. Adaptive Surfing Cape Town, headed up by two-time world champion Anthony Smyth, is an instrumental part of the Adaptive Surfing clinics. Smyth and national Adaptive Surfing team members Tyler Pike and Daniel Nel, and Surf Emporium’s team of qualified adaptive surf coaches, provided participants and volunteers with the guidance and coaching they needed. Smyth also heads up “Learn to Turn”, focusing on the competitive side of adaptive surfing.

Adaptive surfing participants from across Cape Town attended the clinic, including the Warrior on Wheels Foundation members and employees of the Altitude Group who participated in an adaptive surfing clinic for the first time. Alistair Roberts, managing director of the Altitude Group had a sign interpreter attend the clinic to assist with the translation of the surf lessons for deaf participants. The surf conditions were ideal, providing plenty of surf for all participants. Six teams were running concurrently each with a group of adaptive surfers supported by their head coach, head volunteer, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and volunteer support team. More than half of the participants were first time surfers. V For more info on how to get involved as an adaptive surfer or volunteer visit www.roxydavisfoundation.org or contact Roxy Davis on 082 562 8687.

Thousands to benefit from new taxi rank T

DOING THEIR PART: Kommetjie Primary School collected toiletries for Living Hope Centre as the school’s contribution for Mandela Day. They received an overwhelming response and even had extra products which were delivered to False Bay Hospital where the need is huge. The school thanks every single person who donated.

he new minibus-taxi facility in Masiphumelele is now open for business after nearly 10 months of construction work and the finalisation of an operating agreement with local minibus-taxi operators. The City of Cape Town has spent nearly R16m on creating a modern and resource-efficient transport hub for taxi operators and commuters. The new minibus-taxi facility is located on the corner of Kommetjie and Pokela Roads in the Far South. About 65 minibus-taxis will operate from the facility after it was officially opened by the Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase, on Friday 26 July. Seeing that the facility counts among one of the 13 facilities that provide long-distance transport to commuters in Cape Town, it will be operating 24 hours weekly, as well as over weekends. “I’ve recently visited the facility and spoke to residents from the area. We’ve all been waiting patiently for the building work to be completed and the final snags to be sorted. “We’re proud of this hub. It is modern, has been designed to ensure easy access for operators and commuters, and is equipped with a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panel system for electricity generation. “Also, rainwater will be collected from the roof and stored in tanks with a capacity of up to 9 000 litres. Preserving our scarce resources is a priority, given our experience during the drought, and ad hoc loadshedding imposed by Eskom,” said Purchase. At least 4 000 commuters will make use of

the facility from where they can board taxis to destinations in Fish Hoek, Kommetjie, Scarborough, Sun Valley and Simon’s Town, as well as to destinations in other parts of the Western Cape and beyond. There are two entrances for minibus-taxis in Chasmay and Pokela Roads, and two exits into Tambo and Pokela Roads to ensure an easy flow of traffic to and from the facility. There are also six loading lanes. “Public transport should be as convenient as possible and the better the flow of traffic, the shorter the waiting time for commuters,” she said. “Also, the drop-off and pick-up facilities have roofed coverings for protection against sun and rain, and the walking lanes are universally accessible to cater to people with special needs. Apart from ablution facilities, we’ve also provided a waiting area for commuters who are traveling a long distance,” said Purchase. The upgrade of the stormwater system in Pokela Road will help prevent the flooding of the road in the rainy season. “It’s also worth mentioning that residents and contractors benefitted from this project through temporary work opportunities and the provision of goods and services during the construction period. At least R942 000 has been spent on temporary work opportunities for residents. This equals wages for 3 675 working days. “A further R118 300 has been paid to subcontractors from Masiphumelele who assisted with tree felling, the installation of manholes and kerbs, and security,” said Purchase.

Over the past couple of days I received call from various clients who's friends thought that they where overcharged in someway or the other by other towing companies for services rendered. Although we have recommended tow costs set out by our associations and insurers , it really is a free to charge what we like.

Bridge Mansions Building, 445 Albert Road, Salt River, Cape Town (facing Salt River Circle)

If you are insured, your insurer can arrange towing for your vehicle if in an accident or mechanically broken down. Do not sign any authorization slip that gives the tower the rite to tow your car unless he/ she advises you in writing there on the cost for the tow, the charge per day for storage, recovery Chargers that facilitates the tow, the place where the vehicle will be stored at prior to your insurer inspecting it. This is most important. Most tow companies are authorized to tow insured vehicles providing they are authorized by the insurer directly or via a call center that the insurer uses to act on there behalf.

Always have someone or yourself accompany the tower to where the car will be towed to if to your home. No police or any other official can force you to use a particular tow service as you are the one liable for the cost the end of the day. There are many companies to get quotes from so don't be scared to google the closest tow service near you location. If you not sure of what to do at that point in time and need info to utilize a tow company give me a call and I can guide you so that you can get the best possible service. Remember that accident tow charges are always higher than normal mechanical breakdown towing. There is the Consumer Protection Act that the government has put in place that protects you as the consumer that you can use for recourse if you feel in anyway that you have been done in by anyone in business. screening of The Adventures of Supermama will be held at Simon’s Town community hall in celebration of Women’s Month on Saturday 10 August. The Adventures of Supermama, is a comedy, action-adventure and features some great stunt and fight sequences, while amusingly tackling South Africa’s real social challenges. “This movie shows that every girl can do this,” said Supermama actress, Nomsa Buthelezi at the premiere which was held in Jo-

hannesburg in June. Director Karen van Schalkwyk said: “It has been the culmination of many years of hard work. It was great fun making this film with such a talented cast and crew. It is fantastic that Supermama can finally have a life of her own and get out there into the world. It will be great for the community to have the opportunity to see the film.” She added that she is thrilled that the audience will have the opportunity to see the film in her hometown and mentioned that the

‘Beyond’ transports you through SA Indoni Dance Academy and partners will present a new production at the Artscape Theatre called Beyond on Sunday 25 August. With performances – and the grand finale – woven together and directed by Indoni Dance Academy artistic director, Sbonakaliso Ndaba said Beyond highlights the creativity, diversity and the sheer joy of breaking down the silos, going beyond ourselves, and coming together in dance. Beyond today is tomorrow with all its possibilities, and the start of a powerful dance collective. In a show of strength and unity, Beyond features performances by over 120 dancers from the Indoni Dance Academy, Dance Theatre Africa, Figure of 8, Jika Madinga, Unmute, Nqaba, Janine Booysens, Alexander Sinton High, Jazzart and Is’thatha. Each company has also chosen dancers from their outreach groups to guide them on the path to a future in dance.

Individual works are choreographed by each company. Beyond takes young dancers from these groups and affords them practical experience to the process, dedication and the hours of rehearsal required. They will have the opportunity to work alongside their role models within their own company, and also the leading dancers, choreographers and trainers of all the companies involved. It promises to transport audiences on a journey into the uniqueness of current African contemporary dance in South Africa. Audiences will experience South Africa’s richness and catch a glimpse of its bright, exciting future. The Indoni Academy was established in 2014 with the vision to become a world-class, sustainable performing arts academy for talented youth. V Shows will run at 15:00 and 18:00, and tickets cost R100 per person, R50 for students and are available through Computicket.

Sleeping Beauty will return to the Artscape Opera House from Saturday 17 to Saturday 31 August, featuring an exciting cast of talented performers from across the planet. Performed to a score set by Russian composer Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty is a timeless story that follows Princess Aurora’s 100-year sleep and magical awakening told through ballet. “We are honoured to be welcoming our international guest artists who will be joining us for selected performances,” says Debbie Turner, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cape Town City Ballet. “Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond Sarah Lamb’s control, she is no longer able to join Cape Town City Ballet for this season but hopes to do so in the near future. “As a wonderful replacement, we are thrilled to welcome Tatiana Melnik who trained with Vadim at Perm Ballet School and is currently a principal of the Hungarian National Ballet.” The title roles of Princess Aurora

and Prince Florimund are divided between four performers. South African born ballet-dancer, Andile Ndlovu, is set to portray Prince Florimund on the opening two nights. Ndlovu, who was recently nominated for a Benois de la Danse Award in the category of Best Male Dancer, will be sharing the spotlight with co-lead American-born ballerina Precious Adams of the English National Ballet, portraying Princess Aurora. Also playing the roles this year are Vadim Muntagirov – principal dancer at the Royal Ballet, and Benois de la Danse Award recipient (Best Male Dancer); and Hungarian National Ballet principal-ballerina, Melnik. “I’m so looking forward to returning to Cape Town and dancing with Tatiana at these performances,” says Muntagirov. “We trained at Perm Ballet School in Russia and this will be our first time dancing in Sleeping Beauty together. Tatiana is a beautiful balle-

rina, and it’s going to be a joyful experience.” With set and costumes designed by acclaimed South African artist, Peter Cazalet, and lighting design for the production done by multiaward winning set technician, Wilhelm Disbergen – this seasonal production of Sleeping Beauty promises to be one not-to-miss-out-on experience. As an additional treat for eager audiences, Cape Town City Ballet will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra during the 19:30 performances on Saturday 17, Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Wednesday 28 August. The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will also accompany the Cape Town City Ballet at the 15:00 performances on Sunday 18 and Saturday 31 August. V Tickets are priced from R180 to R695 with concessions for pensioners, scholars and block bookings of 10 or more people through Computicket on 0861 915 8000, online at www.computicket.com or any Shoprite Checkers outlet.

Turn to BetterBond for home loans T

he new General Household Survey (GHS) report just released by StatsSA has huge implications for the residential property sector, according to Rudi Botha, chief executive officer of SA’s leading bond originator BetterBond. “For a start, the survey found that about half of all South Africans over the age of 18 are single, either because they have never been married or because they are now divorced or widowed. What is more, that percentage rockets among 18 to 34-year-olds, with 95% of men in this age group and 86% of women have never been married and not currently living with a partner either.” As a result, he says, the rate of new household formation in SA – which usually happens as people move out of their childhood

homes and set up on their own – is growing at 2.4% per year while the rate of population growth is only 1.3% a year, “and what this means is that we are probably not only going to need a lot more homes to be built, but a lot more homes suited to young singles, single parents and single seniors. “According to StatsSA, the number of households in SA has grown from 12.8 million to 16.7 million over the past 10 years – and less than 40% of these now consist of families with four or more members. Almost 26% (more than 4m) contain just one person, while a total of 62% are composed of three people or less.” Meanwhile, notes Botha, although the number of families living in formal homes has risen by 5. 5 million since 2002 to a total

of 13.5 million currently, there has also been an increase in the number of those living in informal homes, from 1.5 million to almost 2.2 million (13.1%) – with the remainder living in traditional or other homes. “In other words, the provision of new formal homes has also not kept pace with the growth in the number of households – and there are vast opportunities and possibilities inherent in this fact for developers, builders, banks, investors, estate agents, originators like ourselves and many others involved in or associated with the residential property sector.” He says the potential for job creation and empowering people over time to become homeowners rather than tenants is also massive. “Research has shown, for example,

that every home built gives rise to between one and three permanent jobs. “It has also shown the benefits of homeownership in terms of social cohesion and private wealth creation, but right now even the creation of more formal rental accommodation that is affordable would be a significant advance for almost 1m households that currently rent informal homes – mostly close to SA’s major urban areas.” It would also create many new opportunities for buy-to-let investors, although the GHS shows that this market is already fairly large, with some 3,4m households currently occupying formal rental accommodation, says Botha. “Consequently, we hope to see the vigorous implementation of government’s plans, announced during the recent State of the Nation Address, to rapidly identify and allocate underutilised public land close to the metros for new affordable housing projects.” “In addition,” he says “we would like to see more streamlined access to the Flisp government housing subsidy for those earning between R3500 and R22 000 – and more firsttime buyers becoming aware of the benefits of applying for their home loans through a reputable originator like BetterBond. “Our services are free to home buyers and investors and to start with, we can help them to prequalify for a home loan and to work out how much they can afford to pay for their property, taking account of any deposit they have saved as well as the costs of transfer. “Then once they have found a home to buy, we can use our multiple-lender application process to ensure that they get a bond at the very best rate available for their personal financial circumstances.” This is important, says Botha, because even a relatively small difference in rate can make a big difference to the total cost of the property over the lifetime of the bond – and to the monthly home loan instalment. “We find that the average variation between the best and worst interest rates offered on the bond applications we submit is currently around 0.5 percent – and on a 20year home loan of R1m, for example, even that small percentage translates into potential savings of R80 000 in interest, as well as R4000 a year off your home loan instalments. “What is more, if you can afford to pay that R4000 a year back into your loan account, you will pay off your home two years early and save another R157 000 worth of interest.”

How ‘refirement’ is reshaping senior housing People are generally living longer these days than they used to, with the result that the over 60 sector of the population is growing and the need for senior accommodation is also increasing. However “retirement” now is also a very different concept from what it used to be, says Berry Everitt, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Chas Everitt International property group. “In fact, it is now often called ‘refirement’ because it is so common to find people still working or even starting new business ventures in their 60s, and still extremely active and independent well into their 70s. “Consequently, many are not ready to move to the old age homes or care centres we traditionally think of as senior accommodation until they are over 75 or even 80, and the type of home being sought by those in their late 50s and 60s is extremely varied.” He says most people of this age do have in

common the desire to downsize and live more simply, though, and a need in many cases to make their retirement savings last longer than they originally thought, so there is a definite preference for smaller, low maintenance homes. “These include lock-up-and-go apartments and townhouses in secure sectional title developments, as well as, houses and cottages in purpose-built retirement villages with all manner of ‘active lifestyle’ facilities and their own frail-care centres, sold on either a life-rights or a sectional title basis. “And in response to demand, we are also now seeing the integration of a senior housing component into many of the new lifestyle estates, which is just one of the new trends emerging in this housing sector.” Everitt says that in the same way that estates now often have apartments that are affordable for young, first-time buyers or renters, they are also providing townhouses or

cluster homes or full-scale retirement villages for seniors who are ready to scale down from big family homes but still want access to estate facilities and want to live in a multigenerational setting. The type of facilities includes golf courses, clubhouses, and wellness centres. “In addition, we are seeing a rise in demand for freehold properties that have ‘granny flats’ or garden cottages and can comfortably accommodate more than one generation of a family. Not everyone can afford to buy into an estate or a retirement village, and in any case, many families find it convenient and more secure to share one property, as well as the running costs and child-care responsibilities, between working parents and grandparents. “Indeed the just-released Old Mutual Savings and Investment Monitor shows that Writing in the Property Signposts newsletter, he says a third trend developing is the

preference of many seniors for renting rather than buying. It gives them more freedom to move should the accommodation become too expensive, and to keep more money in their retirement savings for the time when they might need frail care, which is extremely costly. “And as a result, retirement village apartments and cottages have become a very attractive proposition for property investors.” Meanwhile, a fourth and increasingly popular option for single seniors is to share a large house with others in the same boat and hire staff to help with meals, laundry, transport and other tasks as needed. “It must be said, however, that there remains a serious shortage of decent old-age or care facilities for those who have to live on a state pension and have no families to care for them, and we believe this is something the Department of Social Services needs to address with urgency.”

City libraries have the write stuff T

he City of Cape Town’s libraries have partnered with the Open Book Festival organisers to give storytellers, writers and poets an opportunity to see their work in print through the #WritingMyCity project. The best contributions will be printed in an anthology, which will be launched at this year’s festival in September. The competition has closed and the final selection for the anthology is being made. “A total of 187 entries were received from

librarians and patrons. These included stories and poems in Afrikaans, English, Xhosa and Kaaps. All the work that will be selected will focus on an aspect of our beautiful city,” Badroodien said. Budding storytellers and writers were asked to submit their stories about Cape Town and creative writing workshops were facilitated at libraries to find the voices, said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien.

He continued: “It has given participants a platform to celebrate and deepen our understanding of who and what makes Cape Town such a wonder. It is also providing an opportunity for writers, young and old, to see their work in print and share their diverse stories. “Open Book appointed a judging panel to make the final selection of 40 contributions and I am excited to see and read more about our diverse city,” said Badroodien.

Speaking on the writers’ narratives, he said: “The city is home to a multitude of different voices and the anthology will give us a glimpse into some of the stories which make up the colourful fabric of Cape Town.” The printed anthology will be available through the library network and also available for sale at the Open Book Festival taking place from Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 September.

Right people key to success of business PROMOTION To be in business for almost 22 years is an achievement in itself but would not be possible without the right employees. This is how Nathaniel Roberts, owner of Timbacore in Stikland, sums up his success through the years since his company was established in 1998. To make a success of a business is a miracle and you’ll have to deal with trials and new challenges on the way. “International statistics show that a very small percentage of companies make it past the 10-year mark. The odds are in my favour as I am celebrating 21 years in business,” he said. Use reputable timber suppliers The Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA), the SA timber engineering industry’s professional body, wishes to reiterate the importance of using reputable timber suppliers or merchants whose timber complies with the relevant characteristic values. “We encourage our members and the industry at large to remain steadfast in selecting and using only compliant structural timber that is certified by either of the only accreditation bodies currently in South Africa: The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and South African Technical Auditing Services (SATAS), who certify products in compliance with the relevant standards,” says Amanda Obbes, ITCSA General Manager. It is critical that standards are maintained at all times and that all timber produced and destined for the SA structural market, is compliant. As such, it is expected that local as well as interna-

tional manufacturers of structural timber destined for the SA market, will be certified by a South African-based ISO 17065 accredited Product Certification Body, which is also applicable to the neighbouring states (Swaziland and Zimbabwe). “We request that all members to be aware of the need for compliance with national legislation and to not make use of either locally produced timber or imports that do not comply with SA standards and requirements,” Obbes concludes. The institute was established 45 years ago to self-regulate the engineered timber roof structure industry and to provide design, manufacturing, erection, inspection and certification for compliance with inter alia SANS 10400 and SANS 10082, where engineering rational designs are applicable. Changing lives through health SAMANTHA LEE @SAmantha_Lee121

A

fter her 16-year-old son was hospitalised around 10 years ago, Benita Niemann set out to investigate the benefits of a mineral few acknowledge as important. Magnesium, she would come to realise, is one of the most important minerals in your body. “As a single mother of three, I basically lost everything because of medical bills. My son ended up in ICU. He was a flatline. At that time, my total hospital bill came to R200 000. It bankrupted me,” says Niemann, founder of Magnesium Café. “My son had liver damage and the doctors said they could not give him any medication because it was too strong for his liver. They pulled him through with a Panado drip and prayer.” Following her son’s ordeal and recovery, Niemann started researching magnesium and founded Magnesium Café. She had sold other products before finding Doctor Frank Muller who assisted her in developing Mag1, a magnesium mineral supplement, designed for maximum absorption into the body. Magnesium plays a role in more than 350 enzymatic processes in the body, which include the metabolism of food, synthesis of fatty acids and proteins, and the transmission of nerve impulses. The human body contains around 25g of magnesium, of which most is stored in the skeletal system. The rest is present in muscle, soft tissues, and bodily fluids. The company was founded in October 2017 and is based in Tyger Valley. “Medical bills destroyed me and I realised there must be something more and that is when I started with magnesium. I worked for a medical aid company and I would see how medical funds were depleted quickly, especially with athletes,” she says. “Athletes would go back and forth to doctors and never recover. It was like the more tablets they get, the sicker they get. After researching the magnesium, I thought that if

I could educate children about living a healthier life, then they could put bread on the table,” she says. Knowing the restorative benefits of magnesium, Niemann started sponsoring athletes, who saw a remarkable increase in healing and reduced durations of sport-related injuries. Niemann says many of the children they now work with have lost either one or both parents and end up becoming the breadwinners in their households. This results in them not looking after their bodies. Niemann believes that assisting in improving their health, it assists them in putting bread on the table, through prize money or sponsorships for young talent. The recent addition to their athletes and ambassadors is also Paralympic athlete Hilton Langenhoven, who is using and endorsing the benefits of the product leading up to the upcoming Paralympic Games. “The product is a tool. With every product that is bought, it makes it possible for us to sponsor an athlete. There are so many athletes who need support,” she says. This is sometimes financial support to assist in getting young athletes to training camps or access to sessions where they can be scouted. The company had recent such success with a young athlete being sponsored to a training camp and running himself into a scholarship. The athletes are from all over the country and all use the product to assist them in improving their performance and healing. “I wanted to start a non-profit organisation (NPO), but recently joined up with an existing NPO, the Hendrick Ramaala Sports Foundation. They heard about me sponsoring the athletes and asked if I would like to partner with them. They are quite well known with supporting marathon athletes,” she says. “We are hoping companies will get involved through our NPO partnership and that people will get involved because these athletes need a lot of support.” Each bottle of 30 tablets cost only R99. At

Benita Niemann this stage, the product is available at some pharmacies and health shops. There are also agents selling products and is available for sale via their online store. For more information on the product, to

Jean-Marc Johannes

fter shattering yet another Guinness World Record recently, Athlone-born Jean-Marc Johannes was in Los Angeles competing in the second round of the prestigious, global Street League Skateboarding (SLS) series. The competition, which ended on Sunday 28 July, was stop two of the 2019 World Tour, with the first having taken place in London earlier this year and will be Johannes’ first time competing in LA. Founded in 2010 by renowned pro skateboarder and host of MTV’s Ridiculousness, Rob Dyrdek, the Street League Skateboarding is the premier international competitive series in professional

skateboarding and showcases an international roster of skating’s elite pros. Before leaving for the States, Johannes said the chance to skate with the world’s elite is a big opportunity for him. “In skateboarding, it’s considered an honour to receive an invitation to the SLS. I’ve grown up watching events like these and to be selected to be part of this season’s is a dream come true. It’s the highest level of street skateboarding in the world and it will be assisting me greatly in accumulating points for the Olympic Games ahead,” he said. At each indoor SLS event, arenas are transformed into custom concrete skate plazas,

challenging the pros to be innovative and take the progression of skateboarding to new highs as a selection of worldclass skateboarders compete for the largest purse in skateboarding. The event carries all the more weight with pro-skaters vying for the chance to prove themselves ahead of Tokyo 2020, where skateboarding will make its Olympic debut as one of the most exciting new developments in the Summer Games. Johannes also achieved his second Guinness World Record when he broke Dyrdek’s 15 year-long record for the most fakie flips in one minute recently, one of skate boarding’s most difficult manoeuvres.

Softball shakes things up NOORE NACERODIEN

T

he Cape Town Softball Association, formerly known as the Western Province Softball Federation, held its 27th annual general meeting on Sunday 28 July at the Turfhall Softball Stadium. The newly-elected executive committee is the youngest committee ever to be elected to administer the sport in Cape Town since unification in 1992, with all the elected officials still playing, which augurs well for the sport in Cape Town. Newly-elected chairperson Hayley Carolus, who plays for Battswood Softball Club, thanked the clubs for having the confidence in the new group. “We will work together for a better association and in the interest of the game of softball. Our starting foundation blocks should be softball first. I am here to serve softball and our clubs,” said Carolus. She will feel comfortable having Devonshire Rovers’ Bradley Johnson by her side as her deputy chairperson. Tantasport’s Nawaal Nacerodien will see to the secretarial duties with Samantha Jones from Falcons taking

care of the association’s coffers as the treasurer. Excell Dodgers’ Dwain Kerchhoff will look after the youth with Nicole Alexander from Westridge Yankees taking the reins of development director and Pirates’ Denver Anthony looking after the technical portfolio. Filling up the compliment of the committee is Westridge Yankees stalwart Candice Bull will head up the transformation portfolio. Social media has been flooded with congratulatory messages with the hope that the sport will flourish once more. “May you serve with pride and integrity as you lead softball into a new chapter of hope,” said Dianne Morgan. Cape Town has been the stronghold of softball in the country for many years at all levels of the sport. It is hoped that this new young group can reignite that flame. Former coach and umpire, Preston Ringquest, said: “May the youth prosper and take softball in Cape Town back to where it deserves to be.” The local softball season is expected to kick off in October.
