Drug centre spruced up SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_lee121

“H

ope is seeing there is light through the darkness.” This is one of the inspirational quotes painted along the bright blue building on a corner in Civet Street. The Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre facelift was made possible by a group of students from Holland. The 10 students and their two guides from Wolvfert Bilingual School in Rotterdam in the Netherlands have been at the centre since Wednesday 27 April and finished their revamp on Friday. Dion Fabe, a registered tour guide, has been instrumental in the initiative.

“As a tour guide, I am exposed to many foreigners. I take them to see the attractions but I also take them to see the townships. They always leave asking what they can do, so we put together this initiative. I put them up at my house for two weeks and choose a project for them to participate in. They then raise the funds and come here,” says Fabe. The initiative forms part of obligatory community service, explains teacher and guide Fransiscus Kusters. “Back home our government made it law that every pupil in their pre-exam year must do community service. Because we are a bilingual school we decided to take it abroad and we have worked in South Africa, Ethiopia and Sir Lanka. Now the government has changed it and it is not an obligation any-

more, but we have all these beautiful projects in place and we said we would continue with the support from all the parents,” says Kusters. The pupils are assigned to various areas and raise the funds themselves. Ashley Potts, director of the CTDCC, says they have done an amazing job. “We have opened up a section and will create an area for the community to enjoy. The section will feature two braai spots, benches and built-in chess or checkers boards.” Potts says the students painted and purchased all the materials for the job themselves. Potts had made contact with the local authorities for assistance in selecting a project for the students, but says he received a nega-

tive response. This prompted the invlovement of the international studens at the CTDCC. This is year five of school’s projects are in South Africa. Fabe says the group did not want to leave money, but rather make a difference and do everything themselves. Kusters says they have had a positive response to their initiatives. “I think the key is hope, inspiration and the feeling that they can do more themselves and it is a wonderful thing,” he says. Other phrases include: “Everything in life is a reflection of choice”, “Change starts here with you” and a freshly painted enlargement of the CTDCC logo. The group has already moved on to their next initiative in Woodlands.

RELAY AGAINST RACISM

Racism Race now rainbow colours T

he closing date for entries to take part in the inaugural Relay Against Racism race has been extended to Friday 27 May. Due to great interest in the family Fun Walk, the organisers, Cycle of Life, have decided to extend the closing date for entries. The dress code has also been changed from black and white sportswear to full colour. “Many participants requested that we change the dress code to full-colour to further enhance the key objectives of this initiative, which we fully support,” the organisers say. People’s Post is the official media sponsor of the event taking place at the Green Point Athletics Stadium on Saturday 28 May. The Relay Against Racism event is a 22lap family and corporate fun walk around the track and represents one lap for each year of South Africa’s democracy aiming to unite all people against all forms of racism, xenophobia and related intolerances. More importantly, the event aims to bring together people from all walks of life to promote a better understanding and trust between various communities. As a result of logistical constraints, the organisers will only be able to accommodate the first 2500 entrants into the event. Entry into the event is R25 for pensioners and children under the age of 13, and

R40 for people 13 years and older. Each participant will receive a free gift and a beverage at the registration point on Friday 27 May. Every participant that completes the Relay Against Racism on Saturday 28 May will also receive a certificate of appreciation in recognition of your support and commitment to walking away from racism, xenophobia and related intolerances. Participants are urged to arrive at the stadium at 09:00 on relay day, and take along handmade posters and banners denouncing all forms of racism. There will be plenty of activities for children, including face painting and jumping castles, while exciting spot prizes will be up for grabs. The local DJ in attendance will be Ron X Rated, a very popular radio DJ, who will be providing the perfect music setting for the day. The WP marching squad will also join in on the festivities. A complimentary weekend hotel break valued at more than R3000, a trip on the world famous Blue Train valued at more than R37 000 and some other exciting prizes will be up for grabs. These prizes and free gifts are valued at more than R150 000. V Enter today at www.relayagainstracism.co.za or call Sharon on 021 391 0140/1 for entry forms and additional information. Those unable to access the online entry forms and payment facility, may also visit the stadium on Friday 27 May between 11:00 and 18:00 to enter.

The group of homebased caregivers from Ward 78.

PHOTO: SAMANTHA LEE

Giving care at home SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_Lee121 A group of women working in the Beacon Valley area have had their praises sung by the locals. The seven women are part of the City of Cape Town’s home-based caregivers and assist aged, frail and disabled residents within the ward. The initiative is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme project, developed and implemented by the City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate, says Suzette Little, Mayco member for the directorate. “The programme commenced in 2014 and the community home-based care givers are trained to provide services to seniors who are frail and/or bedridden,” she says. The project is being run in three wards in Mitchell’s Plain – Ward 78, Ward 79 and Ward 81. “The wards were chosen as they were identified as priority wards in the area. The programme will not be run in other wards at this time, but will be considered in the new financial year,” says Little. The primary responsibilities include: . Identification of frail and bedridden seniors who require home-based support through door-to-door profiling, . Assessment of clients’ needs, . Respite relief for family members and care givers, . Companionship, . Reading, . Light household duties, and . Referral of client to specialist organisations for any hands-on medical support. Christine Finch, a senior at the Beacon Vale Seniors club, says she appreciates the nurses’ efforts.

Male cancer support groups The Can-Sir Malecare and PSA Male Cancer Support Group will meet on Tuesday 17 May. The meeting will take place from 18:00 to 19:30 in the boardroom of the MediClinic Constantiaberg, Plumstead. Dr Prenevin Govender will speak on urology and cancer. All patients, their spouses, partners, friends and caregivers are welcome. Snacks will be served. For more information, phone 079 315 8627 or email info@can-sir.org.za.

“They are very helpful and came to us to explain their duties and how they can help,” says Finch. Another senior, Valerie Ditta, agrees. “They are doing exceptional work in such a short time and we are expecting they will get many calls from people who need their help,” says Ditta. One of the success stories of the group also include assistance in more serious matters. A woman, who cannot be named due to the sensitive nature of the case, explains the caregivers, through the help of other officials, assisted her mother in the successful removal of an abusive family member. “He would ask my mother for money and to avoid any trouble she would give it to him. I met the nurses at a shop and asked about the work that they do and they came to my mother and told her to take steps against him,” she says. “The caregivers helped her get an interdict at the police station. He will be appearingin court on 1 July where he will face further charges for abuse and molestation.” The home-based caregivers for this programme are not nurses, says Little. They are unemployed people interested in homebased care and were identified through the City’s job seeker database,” she says. “These workers received five days of training on home-based social care and three days of first-aid training.” People who are unemployed and interested in non-medical home-based social care can register on the job seeker database at their nearest subcouncil offices. Previous home-based care training or experience is an advantage, but not a requirement. V To enlist the help of the group, call the local district office on 021 444 2320 or 021 444 2926.

Conservation through art Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden will be hosting an exhibition of world-renowned Belgian artist William Sweetlove’s work from Wednesday 11 May to Saturday 11 June. Sweetlove has been using his unique artworks to challenge people to become environmental thinkers and behavioural ecologists for close to 50 years, through more than 600 exhibitions worldwide. His “Water Wars” exhibition highlights the reality of how the excesses of humanity are threatening natural resources. The exhibition can be seen in two places in the garden. The Fisherman-hunter sculpture will be on display at the Old Dam and more than 60 penguin sculptures will be set up in the Vlei Garden. V Visit www.sanbi.org/events.

film made on the streets of Mitchell’s Plain will soon be released. Mitchell’s Plain – The Movie is in the final stages of production and is set to tell a story of hope and be an accurate portrayal of the day-to-day lives of those who live in the area. Robin Van Der Byl, the script writer and producer of the film, says it took a little more than a year to put the movie together. “I wanted to portray the positives of Mitchell’s Plain without denying the bad side. You do see it in the film but the movie highlights the unsung heros,” says Van der Byl. Several characters also commented on their favourite sections in the movie. Across the board none of them have had any acting experience before the movie. Sergio Muller says he enjoyed working on the movie and could relate to the character he played. “It is important for everyone to see this movie because many people can relate to it. There is a lot of good in Mitchell’s Plain and this can help change people’s perceptions,” says Muller. Alfred Albertus agrees, saying his character taught him life lessons that he can apply to his daily life. “I took a while to respond to the offer to get involved but it turned out well in the end. I can relate because, as a father and husband, I learnt what to do and what not to do,” he says. Abasia Khan, Renaldo Tarentaal, Kyle Apolis, Damian Kolby, Yolande Carelse, Robert Jnr Carelse, Olge Kolby-Van Wyk, Sharon January and Bianca Makatees are some of the other main characters who helped bring the film to life.

Football fiesta for all The Liverpool-Portland football club will host a football fiesta disco at the Portland Indoor Centre on saturday 28 May at 20:00. Tickets will cost R40 per person. Refreshments and XYZ will be on sale. Prizes are up for grabs. For more information call Sharlene on 083 260 8842 or Alison on 084 971 4147.

Awareness at Cornerstone Cornerstone Community Outreach ministries will host an awareness campaign at the church on the corner of Boabob and Sixth Avenue, Eastridge on Saturday 21 May. RHEMA FAMILY “CHURCH N AFRICA” The cast and crew of Mitchell’s Plain – The Movie. Van der Byl says there were more than 100 people working on the film as actors and extras. Several setbacks also caused delays in filming but, with the new director Andrew Bennett on board, the film was quickly back on track. Now with the launch a few days away the cast and crew reflect on the journey. “We are a family now,” Khan says. “It was challenging at first but we got to know eachother and that made it easier for us to learn lines.” Van der Byl says they would also like to assist the Eastridge Baptist Church which burnt down earlier this year. A few scenes of the movie were shot at the church ahead of the fire, he says.

PHOTO: SAMANTHA LEE

The movie was produced on no budget and everything needed was paid for out of pocket, explains Van der Byl. The movie will be launched on Saturday 14 May at the City of Grace Living Waters Auditorium in Belhar. Tickets for the premier can be purchased via computicket at R50. Seats are limited Van der Byl says a second screening in Mitchell’s Plain is in the works at a later stage. Dresscode for the event is smart casual and all white for women and black and white for men. V For more information call Robin Van der Byl on 060 334 2627 or email mplain.themovie@gmail.com or visit their facebook page: Mitchells Plain - The Movie.

BEACON VALLEY

Buckle up for winter SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_lee121

bout 100 pupils at AZ Berman Primary received a pair of brand new shoes as part of an annual donation drive. Yesterday (9 May) the Shekinah Full Gospel Church in Beacon Valley handed out the school shoes, to children identified by the school, according to sizes collected says Pastor Dean Carelse. “This is an annual initiative done in the second term. Members of the church participate and those in the church who need shoes, we help, but majority of the shoes sourced are donated,” says Carelse.

The shoes vary in sizes and are donated to a school chosen by the church. Carelse explains AZ Berman Primary was chosen because they want to make a difference at the schools surrounding the church. Church elder Thomas Porthen says this is the third year of the initiative. “We visited Alpine Primary and Beacon View Primary before AZ Berman,” he says. School principal Mervin Stoffberg thanked the church for their partnership and generosity. V If you want to donate school shoes to the annual initiative call the church office on 021 376 1281 or Porthen on 082 777 7607.

MOTHERS CELEBRATED: The Rocklands Library hosted a Mother’s Day pamper session at the library on Thursday 5 May. The event saw them entertain, pamper and feed 50 seniors from the area ahead of Mother’s Day celebrated on Sunday.

STRANDFONTEIN

Strandfontein youth show talent S

hihaam Domingo from “Domingo Effect Productions” chose the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum to host a youth talent show, sponsored by Kyknet and the cast from the Suidooster soapie. The show was held on Saturday 30 April and saw scores of talented individuals come to strut their stuff. And this with great reward. Those spotted will also sign with Performing Arts Network of South Africa (Pansa). Pansa will then mentor the talented youth in the hope that they can get the relevant exposure and possibly a gateway into the field of their specific talent. “It’s an opportunity we could not resist with only a few days to arrange,” says CPF chairperson Sandy Schuter. “The CPF, Proudly Strandfontein and the

Strandfontein Neighbourhood Watch partnered to ensure that we grab this lovely opportunity for our youth. “It was an amazing atmosphere and the talent was top notch.” Talent from Strandfontein High Performing Arts, Celeste Schoeman, and the 9 Miles Band, to name a few, graced the stage, with Vinnete Ebrahim – Charmaine from 7de Laan – also making an appearance. Abdu Adams, Irshaad Ally, Gideon Lombard and the MD of Kyknet were there as well. “The talent we have in Strandfontein is amazing. And we definitely should continuously try and create as much exposure as possible. Our youth deserve it.” V Any youths who would like to come on board email strandfonteincpf@gmail.com or call 021 370 1501.

Members of the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum and the neighbourhood watch as we as from Proudly Strandfontein were responsible for putting the show together.

Celebrate new century of spoken word poets The Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement will show that the art of spoken word, the lifeblood of unique, indigenous South African literature, is alive and well when they host the Naked Word Festival this month. Spoken word is a performancebased form of poetry which will be pushed into the spotlight with the Western Cape’s first and only festival dedicated purely to the art at the Magnet Theatre from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 May. The Naked Word Festival will serve as an affirmation, a declaration and an exploration of the future of a distinctly South African poetry. This festival will also celebrate a new century of spoken word poets actively redefining South African literature, in both its oral and written forms, by highlighting young poets from different cities, backgrounds and cultures. V Tickets for the festival are available at Computicket. Visit www.linguafrancapoetry.co.za for more information about the event and participating performers.

USA choir turns 150 Two Cape Town choirs will join a touring American choir for an International Choir Festival in Bonteheuwel on Thursday 19 May. The Church of the Resurrection Parish Choir and Gugulethu’s Igugu Le Kapa Chamber Choir will be joined by the University of the Michigan Men’s Glee Club for a concert at the Church of the Resurrection Anglican Church, David Profit Street, Bonteheuwel from 19:30. The concert forms part of the American choir’s 150th anniversary tour and will also be part of the church’s 50h anniversary celebrations. Riding the waves to a win

Send your sport news and pictures to earl.haupt@peoplespost.co.za

H

out Bay local Tanika Hoffman and Joaquin Del Castillo from Peru clinched the women’s and men’s titles respectively in the inaugural Cape Town Pro presented by Quiksilver at Big Bay, Bloubergstrand on Sunday. The first World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series QS1000 rated events held in Cape Town for six years for men and since 1992 for women, the Cape Town Pro presented competitors with the opportunity to earn points on both the QS and WSL Africa regional rankings, along with prize- purses of R30 000 for men and R20 000 for women. Hoffman emerged triumphant in the seesaw women’s final in which she and Faye Zoetmulder (Port Elizabeth) both delivered scores in the excellent range, taking the lead with an 8.83 that left Zoetmulder needing an 8.60 for victory. “To be a winner in my home town is just great! I haven’t won an event in so long and to win a WSL event and earn some points here is really an honour and so exciting,” says Hoffman. “It was a very well surfed final. Faye had a couple of really good waves while I played the patience game. Then I found a great little runner that let me do a couple of turns and gave me an eight, and Faye didn’t find another good wave.” Zoetmulder, who like Hoffman has competed extensively on the QS circuit overseas, was proud of the standard of women’s surfing at an event in home surf. “It was a really good final with Tanika, we threw some good scores down. The waves were pretty tricky and it was challenging so to both be getting scores in the excellent range was really good,” says Zoetmulder. “I used to surf the QS overseas and to have two events at home now and not have to travel is amazing. The girls are all competing, we are getting more entries and I’m stoked for the all the sponsors to be getting involved.”

Hoffman pocketed R8000 and 1000 points for her victory with Zoetmulder collecting R4000 and 750 points. Nikita Robb (East London) and Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie) finished equal third after losing to Hoffman and Zoetmulder in their respective semi-final encounters. Del Castillo led the high scoring final against Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffrey’s Bay) from the outset, weaving his way through the tricky one metre high tide waves and finishing his rides with flair on the sand. The 20year-old from Punta Hermosa, just South of Lima, posted rides of 7.33 and an excellent 8.67 which Lightfoot could not match, despite earning a pair of sevens. “This win is for my family, for my country and for Punta Hermosa where I live,” says an ecstatic Del Castillo, who was cheered from the edge of the water to the podium by a pair of local surfers in a heart-warming display of sportsmanship. The victory earned Castillo R12 000 and 1000 points that will see him jump nearly 100

positions up the QS rankings from his ranking of 167th coming into the event. Lightfoot, ranked 96th before the Cape Town Pro, was satisfied with his runner-up finish and the 750 points that will see him rise nearly 40 places on the leader board, but was frustrated at coming so close to a first QS win. “I was just out of rhythm with the waves in the final. Joaquin got that eight which was a turning point in the heat and he was in much better rhythm.” Del Castillo defeated top seed Beyrick de Vries (uMhlanga) and Lightfoot defeated Michael February (Kommetjie) in their respective semi-final match-ups. De Vries and February finished equal third overall with R3 000 and 560 points each. The final day of the event started in glassy one metre waves, but a thick mist bank that rolled in after the semi-finals put the event on hold for more than three hours before it was completed in brilliant sunshine and windless conditions. Strandfontein cause huge upset JOSEPH PILLAY

I

t has been quite a magical and heartwarming start to the season for Strandfontein High with a match-winning performance that had the partisan crowd on edge in the Mr. Price Foundation High Schools Soccer League. The growing pains of the team, affectionately known as the “Sea Robbers”, saw them finish at the bottom of the 2015 league championship. But the struggles of the past did not impede on the progress of the Strandfontein side. The rejuvenated Strandfontein side caused the biggest upset of the opening round by sending Cloetesville High, the defending and three-time league champions (2008, 2009 and 2015) crashing to a 2-1 defeat. With an excellent opportunity to redeem themselves under new coach Jason Alexander, who was part of the playing team of last season’s squad, and team manager, Mano Adams, the lads in the blue and white dished up good attacking, scientific football. However, Chris Joubert’s Cloetesvilleside staved off early pressure. Scott Williams, in the no.7 jersey, constantly troubled a very nervous Dean Gordon in goal. It was the home side, Cloetesville High, that minutes before half-time surged 1-0 ahead through a well execution pin-point goal, in which the team strung seven passes together, before Ian Floris landed it safely into the back of the net. But after the changeover the schoolboys from Strandfontein High, which still has 75% of last seasons’ squad, started to gel and had Cloetesville on

sent the crowd into a joyous celebration. Chris Joubert and his Cloetesville side will be quick to admit they were no way near their best and that Alexander’s Strandfontein side fully deserve their morale boosting 2-1 victory. Beacon Hill triumph over Oval North Last year’s league runners-up, Beacon Hill High, topped the log after the opening round following their 3-1 triumph against arch-rivals Oval North High. However, they could find the going much tougher against a stubborn and defensive Rocklands High side, who shared the points (1-1) with Lentegeur on Saturday. Mondale rise to the occasion Mondale High – the 2012 and 2013 champions – showed glimpses of the side that wiped out all opposition for two consecutive seasons and had their long-time educator and coach – since the introduction of the league in 2004 – Nigel Crowie smiling from ear to ear. The Mondale side beat a plucky Aloe High 2-0. Westridge edge out Princeton Westridge High did enough with some quality playing methods to conquer Princeton High 1-0 in a quite an evenly balanced encounter. Though Charles Uys’s Princeton side, who won back-to-back league championships in 2005 and 2006, should have scored twice in the first half through their industrious strikers Sayeed Mentoor and Cole Hartzenberg, they always fell short. Other results: Tafelsig High 2, Glendale High 1; Cedar High 2, Spine Road 0; Portland High 2, Woodlands High 1; Lentegeur High 1, Rocklands High 1.
