merican children’s author Dr Seuss once wrote: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This will soon be a reality for learners at Zerilda Park Primary School in Seawinds after their library was officially opened last Tuesday. Learners were told about the importance of reading and how they should make use of their library. The library has 4000 books at the moment and will be used by 1300 learners at the school. Speakers emphasised the importance of reading and that the learners should grab the opportunity of having their own library. Through collaboration by organisations like Learning in Reach, the Bookery and School Aid UK
with local businesses and volunteers an unused classroom was turned into a library. The official opening was attended by representatives of different organisations, principals and premier Helen Zille. Principal Lorna Engeldo says it was a significant event because they were setting in motion a process that could change many individuals through reading. “Communities seek alternatives to bring children off the streets full of drugs and crime. A lot of people had lost hope because they don’t have the resources, but this library has brought hope – not only to the children of this school but to the community. “We have seen how our children thirst for knowledge and they are faced with the challenge of no quiet place to complete homework or to read. This library will unlock so many doors for our children.” V Continued on page 4.

queals of joy were heard as three “differently abled” patients took to a surfboard for the first time on Tuesday. The residents of Iris House in Bellville – Nola Mbane (28), Esona Mpitolo (8) and Tyler Moses-Meyer (5) – took to the waves at Muizenberg beach with nonprofit organisation Walking on Waves. Walking on Waves is an outreach programme which uses surfing as a form of therapy for people with severe disabilities. The programme also provides surfing lessons to poor children across the peninsula. The organisation was started by surfer William Leadbutter when he was approached to give surfing lessons to Ashtan Davids, who has cerebral palsy. Davids has since gone on to compete at the disabled world championships in California. Leadbutter realised the local surfing community needed to become open to those with disabilities. “I worked with Ashtan and then the momentum grew. Last year in September I started Walking on Waves,” he explains. Leadbutter says the organisation looks to get as many people into the sea as possible, and to grow the adaptive surfing community. “It’s a heart-warming experience. It’s just about love. It’s about sharing smiles, love and energy,” he says. Awareness of the organisation has slowly grown through social media, he explains, with the organisation now being sponsored and working with homes like Iris House.

William Leadbutter and Tyler MosesMeyer get ready to ride the waves at Muizenberg beach. Iris House’s Sue van der Linde says not all residents are candidates for the surfing therapy. “We look at who can get into the water and don’t include those who suffer from seizures, as the cold water could trigger the seizures,” she explains. “It’s about them enjoying their day. It has an unbelievable impact. They lose their fear and become more confident. Everything is done for them usually, but out there on the board, that’s their time to be free.” Leadbutter says: “You have to approach each child differently. Each one is unique. They’re not disabled, they’re differently abled. You need to connect with them and go out with a pure heart.”

STEENBERG
Young player scores spot in US tournament again TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
A
Steenberg teenager is over the moon that he has been selected to participate in an annual soccer youth tournament in Dallas in the United States in April. This is not the first time that Liam Schnell (16) has been selected but he hopes that this trip strengthens the possibility to play there permanently. He plays for Greenwood Athletic Football Club. He made a good impression when he participated last year. Not only was he the youngest player in the tournament, he was also the top goal scorer. Richard Poole, Ikapa United project coordinator, says young talented soccer players across the province are selected to form part of the development project. “The project is not all about soccer, but also affords the players an opportunity to form part of the diversity programme that is visiting schools to interact with learners and attend cultural events organised by the host team in the United States,” he says. More than 180 teams from around the world participate in this tournament. While everyone is overjoyed about Schnell’s selection they are worried about the funds needed to get him there, Poole says. “The project does not have a sponsor. Parents and the organising committee arrange for the majority of the funding through fundraising and personal contributions. Most of the players come from the most disadvantaged areas, which makes it a little difficult. However, we are hopeful,” adds Poole.
Liam Schnell (in white and green) from Steenberg is the only soccer player in the southern suburbs who has been selected for a youth tournament in the United States. Schnell needs R25 000 to be able to take this trip. He is not letting the issue of not having readily available funds bother him. “I’m quite excited. I know I will make it. We are organising events and fundraising nights so that we can raise the money for me to be able to go there. This also makes it even more fun. “I’m looking forward to going to the tournament. I really like soccer. This is the only sport that I have ever known and understood. It makes me so proud to be selected,” he says.
His father Cedrick says his selection and participation in the tournament means a lot to them. “We are happy and we are hopeful that he is going to do much better than the last time. We are working around the clock so that we raise the money for him to go. We don’t want him to miss this opportunity. He is the only one from the southern suburbs who was selected so it means a lot not only to us but to the community. He will be a great example.” V To donate or attend the fundraising events call 081 552 4105 or 081 555 0622.
Teen runs with gun A 16-year-old boy from Walton Road in Lavender Hill was arrested for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition last Monday. He appeared in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court the next day. Sergeant Velile Matinise and Constable Mncedi Zele of Steenberg police station were busy with crime prevention patrols in Lavender Hill when they heard gunshots at about 12:20 on the day of his arrest. They went in the direction of where the gunshots were coming from. As the officers got out of their car, a group of people ran towards them, says Warrant Officer John Bartlett, spokesperson of Steenberg police. “The officers saw a young man running with a firearm in his hand. The suspect was ordered to stop and to drop the firearm. “When the suspect was approached, he dropped the firearm and began to run away and the police officers chased after him. Matinise picked up the firearm and gave chase and caught the suspect.” “The firearm is a black Taurus 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off. “He was arrested on the spot,” says Bartlett. Colonel Jan Alexander, commander of Steenberg Police Station, says Steenberg officers will continue with their zero-tolerance approach to fighting crime, especially firearm and gang-related incidents. He has congratulated the officers for the diligent way in which they handled this matter. V Anyone with information about illegal firearms and gang-related incidents should call Steenberg police on 021 702 9000.

Leanne Reid, project manager of Learning in Reach, invited the learners to use the library. “We want you to make use of the library. Walk into it and start reading. Learn about anything you want to know. Make new friends and with these friends you will never be alone. Discover your inner self, escape from Seawinds, Zerilda Park, escape the world and unlock your full potential through reading,” says Reid.
After cutting the ribbon Zille sat down with a group of children and read to them. She told the children learning to read was difficult for her. “The most important thing you will ever learn is to read. I remember when I first started to learn to read it was difficult, very difficult. “Read every single day and the more you do it, it will become easy. Put time aside to read; it will help you,” she says.

rotea cricket star JP Duminy, who grew up in Strandfontein, is adding his batting prowess to raise awareness for a special school project that empowers learners. He is the latest addition to the MOT brand ambassadors as he takes to the field in the current one day international series that ends on Saturday. During this series Duminy is displaying the MOT logo on his bat and is tweeting about the organisation. “I’m extremely proud to be a part of such an incredible NPO that has the lives of the youth as its core focus,” he says. “They have identified the need for life-skills development among our young people. Placing the logo on my bat is a sign of my commitment to work with them to empower and strengthen the youth in South Africa.” MOT South Africa is a non-profit organisation specialising in life-skills development among the youth at colleges and high schools in the Western and Eastern Cape. The organisation’s theme this year is “Together is better”. MOT CEO Wanda Möller explains that the organisation’s programmes help young people develop self-awareness, make conscious life choices and show courage that will enable them to develop to their full potential. “We give young people the strength to manage peer pressure, to believe in themselves and to take responsibility for their own lives and future,” she says. “The impact the programme has on the youth is lasting. To witness these young minds challenging themselves to be greater, motivates us to keep going.” V For more information follow JP Duminy on Twitter at @jpduminy21.

Ex-pupil bust for burglary TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
T
wo people were arrested after being caught red-handed breaking into Zerilda Park Primary School in Seawinds. Captain Stephen Knapp, Muizenberg police spokesperson, says one of the arrested pair is a former learner of the school and lives in Lavender Hill. He says Muizenberg police officers followed up on a complaint of burglary at the school at 06:20 last Wednesday.
“An 18-year-old woman, who was later found to be a former learner of the school, was arrested on the scene. She was in possession of stationery and photocopy paper,” says Knapp. On further investigation, the shift commander, Warrant Officer Granville Arendse, and Constable Jason Pietersen determined that another burglar could still be hiding in the ceiling of one of the classrooms. “With the help of a police dog, the suspect was found hiding in the ceiling. The 26-year-old man, also
a resident of Lavender Hill, was then taken into custody. Both suspects have been detained at Muizenberg Police Station on charges of house breaking and theft.” Colonel Ismail Daniels, commander of Muizenberg Police Station, has applauded the tenacity and alertness of his officers. “It certainly shines through and by extension gives the community the assurance of the commitment of police to serve and protect. Schools should be protected by their communities and not damaged or broken into.”

In the quest for fame and fortune, many have opted to follow questionable and dangerous routes to get there. With the rise, and constantly growing popularity, of social media, it would seem youngsters are engaging in activities with little regard to what viral fame could mean for their futures. With videos, nude photos and other questionable material being shared and posted on various sites, the thrill of being in the spotlight for a few days may seem attractive to many. Now, while you are young and have no cares in the world, it may not seem important, but do you think, as you move forward in pursuing a career, this is wise? With all the benefits of social media, there are also several shortfalls and negative consequences – the biggest being a permanent record that will follow you for the rest of your life. Even deleting or cleaning up your profiles is not enough, as social media sites allow for the downloading of content. This makes cross-platform sharing possible. While this is how you get to go viral in the first place, it also means simply removing a post from your profile does not remove it from the worldwide web. A potential employer can simply type your name into a search engine and find everything about you in a few clicks. And trust me, so many employers do this. I am almost certain few employers (if any) – especially in a professional workplace – would take you seriously when applying for work. You could forever be known as the bully girl or the cucumber girl or the nude girl and so on, a reputation that will not likely go away. And while media coverage and hype will have teens who are seeking attention jumping at recording a simple little video, the consequences are not a factor until it is too late. They say you can become anything you want to in life. So ask yourself: Is it worth it to throw your potentially bright future away for a bad reputation and a few moments of fame? I think not. – Samantha Lee

LETTERS
Give cyclists a break The construction of cycle lanes was one of the best things that the City did with my rates money. It was with dismay that I read Lynn Coetzee’s letter in which she calls for the City to give back the lanes to Woodstock and Salt River businesses. South Africans are obsessed with owning a car. This while the rest of the world is realising what damage motor vehicles are causing, not only to the planet but to humans and animals. Most South Africans believe the car is the supreme tool for personal mobility. To Coetzee, customers in cars represent profit and that is all that matters. For years she had no interest in downtown areas like Woodstock and Salt River until it offered her a quick buck. And now the whole world has to bend over in order for her to make her quick buck. She cites Cape Town’s crime rate as a reason why cycling as a form of nonmotorised commuter transport will not work in this beautiful city. Perhaps she should ponder the fact that as long as her kind screams for more money at the expense of those she would like to disappear from her places of profit, crime will follow, pursue and bring not only her but all of us down. The City is in the process of reviewing its cycling policy. One of my contributions is going to be a similar suggestion that is currently being mooted in England that people who cycle to work should receive a 250 pound a year tax break. The reason for this break, according to proponents, is because of the health benefits as well as the increased productivity that cycling effects. AL-AMEEN KAFAAR Sybrand Park
Cyclists need to be tested I was interested to read of plans to increase cycling as a way of getting to work. A great idea, but firstly there is a fundamental flaw in the concept of cycles on the roads which should be rectified before adding to a problem. As road users, cyclists do not contribute to the use of the road as motorists do. Your average cyclist is an accident waiting to happen, coupled with the attitude and competency of some motorists we already have a serious problem. Cyclists should undergo a test as other road users do and should pay a licence fee as other road users do. This better be addressed before encouraging more cyclists on the road. Cycle lanes are a great idea but are not universally practicable and occasionally actually ignored. IAIN MOODIE Plumstead

Who planned for the water to run out? There are three letters on your letters page of 31 January relating to water usage in the Western Cape – two giving tips as to how to save water. The letter by Dave Stephens questions the poor outcomes of his (and others’) interventions on the overall water usage. Thus far most of the articles and letters I have read either address ways to save water and the levels in the various dams which supply our water. I would like to postulate that the drought we are experiencing cannot be the only reason why the dam levels are critically low. There are other factors which also influence the figures: 1. What were the comparative rainfall figures for the drought period as compared to “normal” years? 2. What has been the increase in population size of the Western Cape over the past few years?
3. How many new houses/flats/factories have been built over the past few years, each unit requiring water? Having recently been on a trip down the west and south-east coasts of the Western Cape, it is apparent that there is tremendous development in these areas. 4. If no new sources of water supply have been built over the past few years but the population, number of households, industrialisation and construction – all requiring water – have increased rapidly, this must surely point to some problems around proper urban and industrial planning? Development should not be allowed to progress indiscriminately, regardless of the consequences, especially if there is not enough water resources available to support these activities. DEREK HELLENBERG Email
Our work has just begun The fires of 2015 and 2016 on Elsies Peak have resulted in a wonderful resurgence of fynbos, but unfortunately, also a huge concurrent growth of alien species, especially Australian wattles. Several people have been hard at work weeding the mountain, and schools and other youth groups, such as the Fish Hoek Brownies, have also contributed. Thanks to this energy and commitment we hope to maintain the biodiversity of this very special mountain. Some species of fynbos, like Serruria cyanaroides, only grow on Elsies Peak. The battle against the aliens is long from over and at a critical stage, as many are getting to be very difficult to be pulled out by hand. In a few months’ time this will become impossible. The tree popper, an ingenuous invention by Somerset West resident Terry Negus, is a great help with the tough
stuff. I have acquired one and am willing to lend it to other alien-busting groups in the valley. However, the chief reason for writing this is to communicate with other hackers, recruit new ones and re-establish the Elsies Peak hacking group. Even if you can help only sporadically, it will be great to have you on board. Every young tree pulled out means thousands of seeds less. Call me on 083 555 2966 if you are interested. I also want to appeal to residents to get rid of invasive alien vegetation on their properties. The seeds are spread by birds, which have total freedom of movement between the urban areas and the surrounding mountains. Having these trees on your property is illegal and a threat to our environment. EVA VAN BELLE Email
Many drops in my bucket My wife and I were very interested in the article recently about how the Townhouse hotel was getting guests to save water by putting a bucket in the shower to catch water from splash or “overspray” and then using that for watering plants. As an experiment this morning, my wife put a bucket in the shower with her and was amazed at how quickly it filled up. Since much water is used/wasted by
flushing toilets, perhaps it would be more practical for the buckets of waste water to be kept in the bathrooms for flushing toilets rather than using clean drinking water, and any left at check-out taken down for garden purposes? Level 3B water restrictions have reduced garden watering considerably in any event. GLYN Email
Water is all around us, so why must we save? For the life of me I cannot understand why we as Capetonians must suffer with water restrictions. I know a huge drought is crippling large parts of the country and the most of the Western Cape, but I cannot comprehend why we would need to save water while we are surrounded by it. Yes, just have a look: all around us is water. I am talking about the ocean. Yes, I know the water is salty, but that is why the process of desalination exists. According to everyone’s favourite online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, desalination is a process that removes minerals from saline water (but you knew that). “More generally, desalination refers to
the removal of salts and minerals from a target substance, as in soil desalination, which is an issue for agriculture. “Saltwater is desalinated to produce water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. “Due to its energy consumption, desalinating sea water is generally more costly than fresh water from rivers or groundwater, water recycling and water conservation. “However, these alternatives are not always available and depletion of reserves is a critical problem worldwide. “According to the International Desalination Association, in June 2015, 18,426 desalination plants operated worldwide,
producing 86.8 million cubic meters per day, providing water for 300 million people.” So, desalinating water is an expensive option, but compared to the cost of a long-term drought it might just be worth the effort an cost. I want to know if the City of Cape Town has really made an effort to investigate the viability of a desalination plant or are they just too comfortable in their ivory tower to care. Would they rather terrorise citizens to save water during a drought when another option is available? SOUTIE Email

VRYGROND
Drug addict makes amends in art TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
“I
t’s time to give back to my community now, because for long I have been breaking it down.” These are the words of Charles Jansen (30) from Vrygrond, who says he was destroying the community for more than 10 years to feed his drug problem. But now he is setting the wrongs of his past right. He is now an art facilitator at the Butterfly Art Project, giving back to his community by teaching children art. With the help of the organisation he managed to complete Grade 12 and he has enrolled at Unisa for a higher certificate in qualified teaching. “I never thought I would enjoy teaching children but the more I do it, the more I love it.”
Jansen says his past was a disaster waiting to happen. He was addicted to tik and dagga; he would go to extremes to get a fix. He robbed people, even in his own community, to buy drugs. At the age of 16 I got involved with gangs and crime. I committed my first crime, then I went to prison for attempted murder, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. My mother used to accompany me because I was a minor, but the case dragged on until I was so old I didn’t need an adult. I had to go to court on my own. I was scared, so I didn’t go, I ran away.” He continued to commit crimes until he was caught again. “When we robbed someone again police caught up with me and the previous case came up. I was sentenced and I had to do my time.
Despite being in prison I didn’t learn my lesson. I went out and continued again. I was robbing just to feed my drug habit,” he says. He had a passion for art, but he used it for the wrong reasons. “I did murals to feed my habit. Most of the murals were done so that I could go buy drugs.” When he went to prison for the 24th time, he decided to change. “When I was released my aim was to survive the first day out of prison because I knew the days after would be easy. If I survived a day at home with no drugs or gang I was prepared to face the days ahead,” he says. “I’m happy where I am. I will not move away from this community because I have to correct my mistakes and help other children know that crime doesn’t pay.”

Crowbar gang arrests TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji
W
ynberg Main Road came to a standstill as crowds watched what looked like a real game of cops and robbers last Thursday. Police officers were chasing three members of a “crowbar gang” who had driven into Wynberg but couldn’t drive as fast as they wanted because of slow-moving traffic. The ordeal, which had started in Fish Hoek, resulted in six crowbar gang members being arrested after a break-in. Reacting to information received, Fish Hoek police arrived at a house and the burglars sped off, but police gave chase. Three of them were arrested in the Fish Hoek area and the other three in Wynberg. Wynberg police spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Nqunqeka says members of the flying squad chased the gang that was fleeing in two cars. “The flying squad arrested three of the suspects in the Fish Hoek area where the chase started. The other car sped off and police officers gave chase. The suspects
drove into Main Road and collided with a minibus taxi as they were trying to escape. They fled on foot but the officers gave chase and arrested them,” she says. Nqunqeka adds: “Officers found
a jewellery safe, rug and a plasma TV in their possession. They also had house-breaking tools in their car. They will be charged with house breaking and possession of stolen property.”
Crowds gathered to watch as three members of a “crowbar gang” were arrested in Wynberg last Thursday.

Step into a jungle at beach You too can have a jungle experience, right on your doorstep. Thanks to the support of the department of arts and culture, the Jungle Theatre Company is bringing an double bill of outdoor performances to beaches in False Bay this month. Performances will take place at Monwabisi Pavilion this Saturday and Sunday from 15:00 to 17:00, at Strandfontein Pavilion on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 February and at Muizenberg Pavilion (on the grassy terrace) on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 February. Butterfly Dreams, the first performance, starting at 15:00, is a celebration of a girl experiencing the transformation from caterpillar into butterfly. “I feel like they broke the mould with this show, which seems to me to be a near-perfect example of what high quality, engaging, inclusive and enter-
taining street theatre should look like,” says Kyla Davis of the National Arts festival. “I took my one-year-old to see the show and he was riveted (apart from when he wanted to get up and dance when the drums really took off). The humour, honesty and talent that made Butterfly Dreams make me excited to see what Jungle will cook up next for South African audiences.” The second performance, When Lion had Wings, starts at 16:00. This show uses stilt characterisations, animal masks, original music and Nama language to tell a traditional Khoi folktale. Jungle Theatre Company has developed a style of theatre that is based in clowning, draws from different cultures and is ideal for a family audience. All performances are free and donations are welcome.

lenthorn A’s stayed unbeaten but lost two valuable points in the race to retain their softball super league title. The Westridge Yankees came back strongly in the last batting turn, scoring six runs to tie the game at 8-8. Roxanne Ohlson had the opportunity to inflict a first defeat on the A’s when, with two outs and a runner on third base, she could only fly to the outfield. Astrid van Kesteren (2-2) and Cindy Davids (2-2, including a three base hit) were the cream of the A’s batters. Glynnis Koopman (2-3) led the Yankees offensive. A’s took a commanding 8-2 lead going into the last inning. Lisa Erasmus pitched for A’s, giving up six hits. The pitching duty for Yankees was shared by Megan Cable and Carly Davids. The two gave up six hits between them. On Saturday, A’s easily defeated Kenfac Phillies (10-1). The Falcons are keeping an eye on the A’s with a tightly contested 7-6 victory over Westridge Yankees. St Martins easily disposed of bottom-of-the-table Normies with a 11-1 victory.

Many games to play at show in March The Cape Argus Sport Show returns for its second year over the weekend of 24 to 26 March. Sandringham outside Stellenbosch will play host to a three-day sporting showpiece that encompasses live shows, sport celebrities, clinics, exhibitors and games. According to event organiser Stephan Jooste, the Sport Show promises fun for the whole family. “Too many sporting events exclude moms and dads and daughters,” says Jooste. “But the Sport Show is wholly inclusive, and pleases casual fans and hardcore sports fanatics alike.” Last year’s highlights included the worldfamous slam-dunk team Lords of Gravity,

Nick de Wit and his freestyle motocross riders, triathlete Conrad Stoltz, as well as food, craft beer and play areas for children. Jooste promises they’re “only warming up”. From tag rugby and cricket to golf, netball, paintball, watersports, BMX biking, obstacle courses and even drone racing, the Sport Show promises to be bigger than ever. Team players and individuals are welcome to sign up for games on the day of the event or simply soak in the action on offer. Clinics and seminars will help players hone their game. The Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy will be present to give invaluable advice. Inside two large halls, sporting exhibitors

will be on hand with gear and technology for sale. The main halls serve another purpose: host of the third SA schools’ sports summit, in which more than 120 schools and 350 delegates will gather to discuss the future of school sport in South Africa. Flanking the halls, an action sport and tag rugby arena sits beside a paintball court, where the Western Cape provincial cup will be contested. In the middle of Sandringham, a freestyle stunt arena is sure to draw crowds, while South African freediver Hanli Prinsloo will demonstrate tips for holding your breath under water. A food truck and beer tent will be busy all
weekend alongside a fives soccer arena and children’s area. Finally, water sport action takes place at the nearby dam. “South Africans live and breathe sport and it’s fantastic to be able to put together an event that champions the fun of competition,” Jooste says. “Whether you’re after the craft beer and grub or want to get active, there’s something for everyone.” Sport is a way for families to come together, Jooste adds – “a language everyone can understand”. Tickets are available at www.sportshow.co.za and Computicket. The show is open from 09:00 to 18:00 throughout the weekend.
