R. Andrew Swinney, TPF President, 1998-2015
Pedro A. Ramos, President and CEO of TPF
LEADERSHIP TRANSITION
A Legacy of Service After 16 years as TPF President, R. Andrew Swinney retired in 2015. His many contributions to the organization included more than doubling TPF’s asset base. His 2015 honors included the R. Andrew Swinney Presidential Achievement Fund created by TPF’s Board of Managers and the Dennis Clark Solas Award from the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians.
Sadly, Andrew passed away in April 2016. His death generated a national outpouring of condolences from those who knew him as a passionate advocate for nonprofits and a person of compassion, vision and dedication.
Building on Community Leadership Longtime Philadelphia civic leader Pedro A. Ramos became President and CEO of TPF in August 2015. He previously served as the city’s Managing Director, School
Our Community Impact Across the Greater Philadelphia region, we advance causes, support institutions, convene leaders and perpetuate the priorities of our donors – all in order to meet our community’s diverse needs. During 2015 we created new funds to accomplish the vision of our donors, accepted contributions from a range of supporters, distributed grants to effective nonprofits and shared our financial data with the community.
T H E P H I L A D E L P H I A F O U N D AT I O N
Pedro launched his new role through community presentations including the keynote address for the Greater Philadelphia Leadership Exchange. He also connected with TPF donors at Presidential Open Houses and engaged with nonprofit and philanthropic leaders as he began to shape TPF’s role for its second century.

LEADERSHIP TRANSITION
Here are two examples of how TPF is helping to pave a new future by changing the status quo: • With GSK, TPF in 2015 announced a three-year $5 million grant to 10 nonprofits working together to build healthier communities. The program will empower 50,000 teens to adopt and promote healthy lifestyles. • TPF’s three-year $730,000 grant for improving the learning climate in 20 Philadelphia School District schools culminated in 2015. Demonstration sites – where attendance was up and suspensions, expulsions and serious incidents were down – brought the district favorable national attention that helped secure ongoing funding for the work.

Gifts to Last a Lifetime
Perpetuating the ongoing work of The Philadelphia Foundation (TPF) in 2015 were 1,815 individuals, families, companies and organizations who generously contributed $53 million between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2015.
Gifts were gratefully received through the establishment of 32 new funds totaling $4.2 million, as well as contributions to existing funds. In addition, donors contributed $105,000 toward Charitable Gift Annuities, which will provide them with income now and will support the causes they care about far into the future.
The Philadelphia Foundation salutes and thanks all those who have established or contributed to TPF funds that provide enduring philanthropic resources for Greater Philadelphia! Thanks to your heart and vision, we will be able to continue to support and sustain those community organizations and initiatives that teach our children, train our future workforce, heal us, entertain and inspire us, preserve our natural spaces and provide social services to those most in need.

President & CEO Pedro A. Ramos chats with Shirley Dennis, a member of The Philadelphia Foundation’s Repplier Society, which is composed of those who have included us in their estate plans. By informing us of their generosity that will extend over many generations, these visionary donors allow us to honor and thank them during their lifetimes. The society is named for Sidney N. Repplier, the Foundation’s second director (1961 – 1982), who transformed The Philadelphia Foundation into a proactive philanthropic institution.

YOUTHadelphia members celebrate in December with representatives of Rock to the Future, which was among 15 organizations to receive a total of $95,000 in funding through the Youth in Philanthropy Committee of our Fund for Children. Each year, Philadelphia teens from a cross-section of public and private schools meet in the fall and spring to set funding priorities and select appropriate recipients for their grants. They develop an application, host an open house, narrow the applicants to a set of finalists and conduct site visits to learn more about the programs offered. The 2015 priorities included social justice, mental health, college and career guidance, college prep programs and empowering young women.
NEW FUNDS IN 2015
Your Vision of Generosity The 32 new funds established at The Philadelphia Foundation (TPF) in 2015 illustrate the vision and generosity of those who created them, along with the breadth of possible philanthropic impact available through TPF. The new funds join more than 900 total funds established at TPF to benefit Greater Philadelphia and beyond.

GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS
Over $26.2 Million in 2015 Grants In 2015, The Philadelphia Foundation (TPF) was proud to provide grants and scholarships totaling more than $26.2 million to 1,285 community organizations. These grants and scholarships were awarded by our Board of Managers after staff members matched donors’ intentions with the needs of the community and performed due diligence on the recipient organizations. The Philadelphia Foundation salutes all those generous donors who have supported and sustained our community organizations that contribute so much to the vibrancy of the Greater Philadelphia region! Our 2015 grants listing, seen on the following pages, names those organizations receiving a cumulative total of $5,000 or more.

2015 GRANTS LISTING KEY
Discretionary Grants Discretionary Grants were awarded by TPF’s Board of Managers upon the recommendation of staff members, who reviewed applications submitted by community nonprofits. Discretionary grants are supported through two types of funds.
Unrestricted Funds are donated to meet the greatest needs of the community. TPF has unlimited discretion to award grants from these funds to address critical issues.
Field of Interest Funds are donated to support a general area of donor interest. These may include a geographic or a demographic community (for instance, Chester County or older adults) or a field of endeavor (for instance, the arts or the environment). TPF has wide discretion to award grants within the specified field of interest.
Non-discretionary Grants Non-discretionary grants were awarded through donor recommendations after staff due diligence was completed and board approval was received. These grants are supported through four types of funds.
Designated Funds name specific organizations as recipients. These funds are set up by those who wish to provide a nonprofit with permanent annual support. Should an organization go out of existence, TPF has the power to redirect these grants to other organizations closely matching the donor’s original intent.
Organizational Endowment Funds make distributions to the nearly 100 nonprofits that have chosen The Philadelphia Foundation to administer their endowments.
Donor Advised Funds are established by individuals, couples, families, organizations or businesses who recommend specific grants to named organizations. These recommendations vary over time on a case-by-case basis while conforming to the fund’s founding purpose. TPF performs due diligence on the recommendations and the Board of Managers has the ultimate authority to accept or reject these recommendations.
Scholarships are awarded to academic institutions to assist students meeting the criteria established by the funds’ founders.
