Letter From the President Dear Friends: Welcome back to the Kimmel Center for another fabulous evening with your very own Philly POPS! Tonight’s program features the Philly POPS performing Simon and Garfunkel’s most endearing music, joined by the acclaimed national touring duo of AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle. AJ’s warm baritone and Jonathan’s soaring tenor combine flawlessly to capture the essence and magic of Simon & Garfunkel’s sound of the early years in Greenwich Village, with their heartfelt interpretations of Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Sound of Silence, The Boxer, America, Mrs. Robinson, and many other favorites. And this is just the beginning of an exhilarating 2014 season. In March, be sure to join the Philly POPS as we celebrate the musical legacy of that one and only singular sensation, Marvin Hamlisch. This very special series will be conducted by one of the people who knew Marvin best — his longtime friend, Larry Blank. Maestro Blank will also share his behind-the-scenes experiences and adventures in show business. In April, Michael Krajewski returns to lead the POPS as we perform the movie blockbusters of the legendary composer John Williams. And in May, you will be dancing in the aisles as Michael and the Philly POPS perform the very best top 40 hits of the Sixties, joined by the incredibly talented original cast members of Broadway’s Jersey Boys! And for those of you still catching your breath from the Holiday POPS Christmas Spectacular, we are thrilled to announce that conductor David Charles Abell will return next year! Thanks to all of you who helped make our last season a success beyond our wildest dreams. Your cards, letters, and emails of support mean so much. Now is a fantastic opportunity to become a subscriber and reap exclusive benefits, such as access to the best seats for less, special parking discounts, and much more! You can also become a “Friend of The Philly POPS” with your tax deductible donation. You will help support our one-of-a-kind orchestra, and enable us to continue to bring world-class performers and musicians to Philadelphia. So now it’s time to sit back, relax, and let the beautiful sounds of Simon and Garfunkel fill the air. Thank you for spending your evening with us, and enjoy the show! Best,

Michael Krajewski, music director

Known for his entertaining programs and clever humor, Michael Krajewski took the helm as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS® with the beginning of The POPS’ 35th season in October 2013. He is a much sought after conductor of symphonic pops, and takes on his Philadelphia post while serving as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. by the open-air orchestral music played in the summertime by the nearby Detroit Symphony. “That huge sound coming from the stage hit me and overwhelmed me,” he recalled with a smile, gesturing to emphasize the robust and exciting impact it had upon his whole body. Living in a community at the heart of the U.S. automotive industry, in a family with no experience with orchestras or elite music studies, he took piano lessons with the teacher from his church and happily practiced on an old piano. He joined school bands, learned the trumpet, accompanied the school choruses and played in the pit for the high school musicals.

AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle have been performing this remarkable tribute to the music of Simon & Garfunkel for more than a decade, and their sold out shows prove the effect on their audiences is undeniable. A 1991 chance meeting in a local club in Bethlehem, PA, brought these two talented artists together. Moments after a brief introduction, they were blending their voices as if they had been performing together for a lifetime. AJ’s warm baritone and Jonathan’s soaring tenor combine flawlessly to capture the essence and magic of Simon & Garfunkel’s sound from their early years performing in Greenwich Village. With a quiet stage and an acoustic guitar, AJ and Jonathan recreate the memories of the duo’s classic hits and obscure songs. Discover why audiences are cheering for this duo as they capture the magic of Simon & Garfunkel. 

The Robert H. Rosen Marketing Initiative: A Commitment of $50,000 Dear Friends, For over 20 years, my family, friends and I have reveled in the excitement of wonderful concerts and fun times. I love our new Philly POPS! Let’s keep the music coming! Recently, I asked the Philly POPS what we could do together to keep the quality of our orchestra strong and to expand our audience for the future. We decided to create a campaign for the POPS – one that will use existing marketing activities, including a subscription campaign, telemarketing, direct mail, traditional advertising, e-mail communications and social media. I ask you to join me in this exciting venture by helping to raise at least another $100,000 in contributions for this project. Our success will guarantee that future generations of concert goers will continue to enjoy the gift of the Philly POPS.

"Let's keep the music coming!"

Thank you.

Robert H. Rosen
