ANNOUNCING THE 2014-2015 SEASON: Renew or Subscribe Today! See page 9 for details.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the life of Marvin Hamlisch. We are honored to host guest conductor Larry Blank, one of Marvin's good friends who performed with him often—including his final concert. Our guest vocalists also have wonderful memories of working with Marvin, from Tony Award-winner Donna McKechnie, to the world-renowned Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid), to Broadway star Doug LaBrecque. We know you will enjoy this performance of beautiful music and sentimental memories. We have also started a new tradition in our program: A page dedicated to you, our guests, with photos from the prior concert. Your enthusiasm is apparent in all of the pictures and in the beautiful letters of appreciation we receive. We all read them, and we couldn’t feel more personally rewarded by your kind words. Keep in mind that it's not too late to subscribe to our next two concerts, and we have added a special pick-two subscription option for a limited time only. In April, our music director, Michael Krajewski, will present the movie blockbusters of legendary composer John Williams. And, in May, you will dance in the aisles as Michael and the Philly POPS perform the top hits of the Sixties, joined by the Midtown Men, the incredibly talented original cast members of Broadway’s Jersey Boys! Earlier this month, we announced an exciting new lineup for next season, which you will see on page 9. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to subscribe now for next season to enjoy substantial savings and the best seats in the house. Join us for the music of ABBA (of Mamma Mia! fame) to Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, the Bee Gees, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Sting, The Beatles, and so much more. As we prepare for next season, I hope you’ll agree there are fantastic opportunities for you to become a subscriber and reap exclusive benefits, such as access to the best seats for less, special parking discounts, and much more! You can also become a “Friend of The Philly POPS” with your tax deductible donation. Your support will enable our one-of-a-kind orchestra to continue bringing world-class performers and musicians to Philadelphia.
Now … sit back and enjoy the show! Best,

Marvin Hamlisch – A Musical Tribute • 2014 • 5
WHAT HE DID FOR LOVE (… OF MUSIC) BY STEVE HOLT
Photo: Len Prince
The depth and range of Marvin Hamlisch’s musical accomplishments are almost impossible to grasp. From Broadway to Hollywood, he collected a trophy-room full of the music world’s top awards. He collaborated on stage with everyone from Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli to Groucho Marx. He led orchestras all over the planet. For several generations of devoted fans, he literally created the soundtrack for their lives. Looking back, Hamlisch’s astonishing career can

So the boy wonder was on his way to a career in the concert hall. Except for two things: he suffered from debilitating stage fright, and he preferred show tunes to the classics.

That in turn landed him soundtrack duties for Woody Allen’s first two movies, Take the Money and Run and Bananas. And in what was surely the unlikeliest collaboration of his career, Hamlisch served as musical director for An Evening With Groucho Marx, punching up the master’s comic songs and serving as straight man. The planets all aligned in 1974, when Hamlisch took home three Oscars on the same night: for the song “The Way We Were,” for the original score for the movie of the same name, and for the adapted score for The Sting, which revive interest in Scott Joplin’s original ragtime music, and produced a hit single (“The Entertainer”).
We keep Marvin alive by performing his music. Marvin Hamlisch continued to create for Broadway, Hollywood, and television, at the same time keeping up a busy schedule of pops concerts. In fact, he was such a fixture in the musical firmament for so long that his death on August 6th, 2012, came as a shock, to friends and fans alike.

The first workshop was a bit chaotic, undefined, but in the second workshop, when I heard the music, I was so moved. If you haven’t seen her face, you almost certainly know her voice: Jodi spoke and sang as Princess Ariel in Disney’s animated classic The Little Mermaid. She also voiced the character Barbie in Toy Story 2 and 3, and was named a Disney legend in 2011. Marvin puts a stick in my hand and said, ‘Get up there and conduct.’ He hired me from then on to be his POPS conductor. Within two years, I had guest conducted every POPS orchestra in the U.S.” Blank was with Marvin for his final public performance, on July 21, 2012, sharing conducting duties with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra with Michael Feinstein as guest artist. MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI, music director
Known for his entertaining programs and clever humor, Michael Krajewski took the helm as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS® with the beginning of The POPS’ 35th season in October 2013. In Canada, he has led Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic, and the Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphonies. Other international appearances include performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Ulster Orchestra in concerts in Belfast and Dublin. 10 • ENCORE! | The Philly POPS
His musical collaborations are just as creative and extensive. One of The Philly POPS programs — The Sounds of Simon & Garfunkel, which took place in February — was developed by Krajewski in partnership with touring artists AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle. He will take this concert all over North America. Among the list of internationally respected artists and groups with whom he has collaborated are flutist James Galway, mezzo soprano Marilyn Horne, pianist Alicia de Larrocha, guitarist Angel Romero, and pop artists Roberta Flack, Judy Collins, Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Doc Severinsen, Patti Austin, Sandi Patty, Ann Hampton Callaway, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Chieftains, Pink Martini, Rockapella, Cirque de la Symphonie, Classical Mystery Tour, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael is excited to share his sense of the unexpected and theatricality with the audiences of Philadelphia. “I think I have good instincts of what will work with Pops orchestras,” he explained recently. “I enjoy finding artists who aren’t playing with symphonies and working with them to develop programs that would be welcomed by the Pops audience. I seek them out and make new collaborations. It’s the creative process that I value most, cultivating new works for Pops audiences — like when I encouraged James Stephenson to compose the ‘Concerto for Cell Phone,’ which we’ll be doing in Philadelphia during the April concert series.” Michael looks forward to many years in Philadelphia, a city he is appreciating more with each visit. Michael Krajewski lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. When not conducting, he enjoys travel, photography and solving crossword puzzles.

THE ROBERT H. ROSEN MARKETING INITIATIVE: A COMMITMENT OF $50,000 Dear Friends, For over 20 years, my family, friends and I have reveled in the excitement of wonderful concerts and fun times. I love our new Philly POPS! Let’s keep the music coming! Recently, I asked the Philly POPS what we could do together to keep the quality of our orchestra strong and to expand our audience for the future. We decided to create a campaign for the POPS – one that will use existing marketing activities, including a subscription campaign, telemarketing, direct mail, traditional advertising, e-mail communications and social media. I ask you to join me in this exciting venture by helping to raise at least another $100,000 in contributions for this project. Our success will guarantee that future generations of concert goers will continue to enjoy the gift of the Philly POPS.
"Let's keep the music coming!"
Thank you.
Robert H. Rosen
