LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: Once again it’s time to dim the lights, sit back and enjoy another concert with your favorite Pops orchestra, as music director Michael Krajewski, The Philly POPS and the POPS Festival Chorus treat us to the beautiful and expressive music of the incomparable John Williams. And, as you have come to expect with any Philly POPS experience, there are plenty of surprises in store for you that will make this another POPS Concert you will never forget! In May, our 2014 season ends with the biggest top 40 hits of the Sixties featuring none other than the world famous Midtown Men—the original cast members of Broadway favorite Jersey Boys! Tony® Awardwinner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony® Award nominee J. Robert Spencer have taken their sensational sound to the Kimmel Center, bringing audiences to their feet as they perform your favorites tunes from The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Motown, The Four Seasons and more! And even as this fantastic season draws to a close, we’re already excited about what’s in store for next year. We are proud of the energy and momentum our Philly Pops have brought to our city’s music scene and look forward to bringing more of the refreshing, fun sound of popular music to you, your family and your friends. If you love ABBA (of Mamma Mia! fame), Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, the Bee Gees, Carole King, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Sting, The Beatles and so many others, you’ll want front-row seats to our 2014-2015 season! As President of the Philly Pops, it is most gratifying to receive your letters and e-mails. When I read comments such as, “I’ve just become a new Philly POPS subscriber – for life!” you truly make our day. Please keep those cards and letters coming. And for those of you who are new to the Philly POPS or someone who is rediscovering the joy of spending an evening with America’s favorite Pops orchestra, please consider subscribing to our series and offering your financial support. It is because of friends like you that we can continue to bring the most talented singers and musicians together with innovative programming for music lovers of all ages. And now, it’s showtime! JUST CALL HIM MR. MOVIE MUSIC BY STEVE HOLT
It may be the most memorable piece of film scoring ever, and it’s essentially just two notes, a half step apart: bah-DUM, bah-DUM. The chilling main theme from Jaws made a huge contribution to the film’s blockbuster success. More importantly, it established John Williams as a movie-music giant, whose name is inseparable from some of the greatest film hits of the last five decades. Just to hear the titles is to visualize the movies:

As astonishing as Williams’ film output is, scoring movie magic has only been a part of his career. Do you watch NBC Nightly News? His theme kicks off the program. He’s contributed to the soundscape of everything on TV from Lost in Space to Gilligan’s Island (the original version of the theme song). Williams has also moved easily from the soundstage to the concert hall. His classical works include a dozen concertos for everything from oboe to bassoon, from flute to tuba. He’s even set poetry to music; his Seven for Luck is based on the work of Rita Dove, a former U.S. Poet Laureate. Williams conducted the world premiere with the Boston Symphony and soprano Cynthia Haymon. His best-known conducting gig was with the BSO’s brother organization, the beloved Boston Pops. Williams succeeded the legendary Arthur Fiedler on the podium in 1980, and led the ensemble until 1993; he’s still the Pops’ Laureate Conductor, and conducts them several times a year.
Just to hear the titles is to visualize the movies
The true measure of John Williams’ musical brilliance is that it transcends the movie theater, the TV set, and the concert hall. Skeptical? Then try this the next time you’re down the shore. Take a nighttime stroll on the beach. Look out at the ocean. Then close your eyes and try NOT to hear it: bah-DUM, bah-DUM. It’s impossible. Thank John Williams.

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI, music director
Known for his entertaining programs and clever humor, Michael Krajewski took the helm as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS® with the beginning of The POPS’ 35th season in October 2013. He also serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. A conductor who brings an impressive list of

has conducted the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston and Cincinnati Pops, the San Francisco, Baltimore, Detroit, Indianapolis, Seattle, Dallas, St. Louis and National Symphonies, and numerous other orchestras across the United States. In Canada, he has led Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic, and the Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphonies. Other international appearances include performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Ulster Orchestra in concerts in Belfast and Dublin. 10 • ENCORE! | The Philly POPS
His musical collaborations are just as creative and extensive. One of The Philly POPS programs — The Sounds of Simon & Garfunkel, which took place in February — was developed by Krajewski in partnership with touring artists AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle. He will take this concert all over North America. Among the list of internationally respected artists and groups with whom he has collaborated are flutist James Galway, mezzo soprano Marilyn Horne, pianist Alicia de Larrocha, guitarist Angel Romero, and pop artists Roberta Flack, Judy Collins, Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Doc Severinsen, Patti Austin, Sandi Patty, Ann Hampton Callaway, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Chieftains, Pink Martini, Rockapella, Cirque de la Symphonie, Classical Mystery Tour, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael is excited to share his sense of the unexpected and theatricality with the audiences of Philadelphia. “I think I have good instincts of what will work with Pops orchestras,” he explained recently. “I enjoy finding artists who aren’t playing with symphonies and working with them to develop programs that would be welcomed by the Pops audience. I seek them out and make new collaborations. It’s the creative process that I value most, cultivating new works for Pops audiences — like when I encouraged James Stephenson to compose the ‘Concerto for Cell Phone,’ which we’ll be doing in Philadelphia during the April concert series.” Michael looks forward to many years in Philadelphia, a city he is appreciating more with each visit. Michael Krajewski lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. When not conducting, he enjoys travel, photography and solving crossword puzzles.

THE ROBERT H. ROSEN MARKETING INITIATIVE: A COMMITMENT OF $50,000 Dear Friends, For over 20 years, my family, friends and I have reveled in the excitement of wonderful concerts and fun times. I love our new Philly POPS! Let’s keep the music coming! Recently, I asked the Philly POPS what we could do together to keep the quality of our orchestra strong and to expand our audience for the future. We decided to create a campaign for the POPS – one that will use existing marketing activities, including a subscription campaign, telemarketing, direct mail, traditional advertising, e-mail communications and social media. I ask you to join me in this exciting venture by helping to raise at least another $100,000 in contributions for this project. Our success will guarantee that future generations of concert goers will continue to enjoy the gift of the Philly POPS.
"Let's keep the music coming!"
Thank you.
Robert H. Rosen
