AMERICAN SONGBOOK WITH
TONY DESARE
NEVER OUT OF DATE BY STEVE HOLT
Ah, the American Songbook. For many people, it evokes a trip down memory lane, celebrating the classics from Broadway and Tin Pan Alley: songs by giants like Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein. And while that music clearly has earned its “timeless” status, it’s lucky for all of us that American songwriters haven’t been resting on their laurels in recent decades. Instead, the Songbook has grown fatter by the year. And who better to share all of it with us than dynamic singer/ songwriter/keyboard whiz Tony DeSare, the driving force behind American Songbook, Then and Now. This is a perfect program for The Philly POPS,

Tony DeSare is an ideal guest performer for this concert. “Tony’s able to bring this sincere

Billy Joel, and even honorary American Songbook writers like Elton John, The Bee Gees, and Paul McCartney. (Tony actually met Sir Paul one night, when the music legend came to see one of his shows at New York’s Carlyle Hotel. As he told Making Music magazine, “It would be like, in the 1930s, having George Gershwin walk into your show.”) It all makes for a modern-day twist on this classic music — and a show like none other. From Carnegie Hall to Calgary, Canada, audiences and critics alike have been hailing this musical phenom. Fittingly for someone whose musical tastes cross generations, Tony inherited his love of music from his father. “My dad would play guitar and sing every single night. I was exposed to his favorite music, and I instantly gravitated toward it.” A love of his dad’s guitar shifted into a fascination with the piano. Around age 10, piano lessons “became the focus of my free time.” (See kids? This is what happens when you practice!) In fact,
Tony is especially happy to be paging through the Songbook in Philadelphia. “I love the city!” he exclaims. He’s performed here many times, including at the late lamented jazz club Zanzibar Blue (“one of my favorite jazz spots to play”). He’s also recorded at Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, where he played piano and arranged many of the tracks on Larry Carlton Plays the Sound of Philadelphia. Tony is looking forward to sharing the Philadelphia part of his soul from the Kimmel Center stage. What are his hopes for this concert series? “My goal when I perform is to always make a positive impact, change someone’s life in some way or at least their day. Everybody enjoying music together is a communal experience — there’s something nurturing about that, and my job is to facilitate that process.” As it says in another chapter of the American Songbook: “Nice work if you can get it!”
one of his showcase pieces is a dazzling rendition of Irving Berlin’s witty “I Love a Piano,” setting off Berlin’s inimitable lyrics with mind-blowing keyboard pyrotechnics. The performing bug bit during his junior year in high school when a teacher invited him to sing and play piano during a break in a school orchestra performance. “I sang three songs, and the audience went nuts, and it changed my life,” he recalls. “It was so encouraging. I’ll never forget that.”

TONY DE Named a “Rising Star” Male Vocalist in DownBeat magazine’s 2009 Critics Poll, DeSare has lived up to the distinction by winning critical and popular acclaim for his concert performances throughout the United States, as well as in Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong. From jazz clubs to Carnegie Hall to Las Vegas headlining with Don Rickles, Tony has brought his fresh take on old school class around the globe. DeSare has three top ten Billboard jazz albums under his belt and has been featured on the CBS Early Show, NPR, and the Today Show — and his music was even recently posted by social media celebrity juggernaut George Takei. These new inductees include Ray Charles, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, and Michael McDonald, as well as "adopted" American songwriters like Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Barry Gibb. HISTORY OF THE PHILLY POPS® First launched in 1979, The Philly POPS was founded by impresario Moe Septee as part of his All-Star Forum with the highly respected Marc Mostovoy. It was Septee who had the foresight to bring a major national pianist/conductor to Philadelphia to serve as the music director — Grammy Award-winning pianist Peter Nero, who led the orchestra for 34 years.
“The best pops ensemble on the planet today” —allaboutjazz.com Under the leadership of Maestro Michael Krajewski and President and CEO Frank Giordano, The Philly POPS exudes a new vitality. Giordano says, “Our goal is to provide a music experience like none other in the region. Attending a Philly POPS concert should always be fun, even before our guests enter the concert hall. We love to plan surprises and provide outstanding music with exceptional experiences. Our Music Director, Michael Krajewski, is a first-class conductor who knows how to keep an audience entertained.”

THE PHILLY POPS FRIENDS COMMITTEE
Dottie Giordano, Co-Chair “I was drawn to the POPS through my love of music. My husband Frank is the President and CEO. I serve on several boards alongside my husband and am delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of the POPS family.”
Cindy Wanerman, Co-Chair “A friend gave us tickets 20 years ago. At that first concert, I turned to my husband and said, 'I want a subscription.' We’ve been coming regularly ever since.”
The Friends Committee is dedicated to helping a wider circle of friends get to know The Philly POPS. The POPS brings the Great American Songbook — the work of popular composers and performers, Broadway tunes, and movie themes — to captivated audiences each year. We are certain that others will enjoy the celebration that is the POPS experience as much as we do, and our mission is to bring the enthusiasm we feel to everyone in the area. We thought that a series of community parties and get togethers organized through Community Hosts would be the right introduction for folks who weren’t familiar with the magic. We kicked off the Committee with three August events — one in Ambler at Cindy’s home, a second at Dottie and Frank’s Moorestown home and a third at their cabin in Medford Lakes. In September, the Rittenhouse Friends were hosted at the Michaelson’s and, in December, we hosted a tree-lighting party back in Moorestown to kick off the recent holiday season. Friends Committee events for this Spring are planned for the Cherry Hill area and for Center City. Let us know if you’d like to be a Community Host for one of our upcoming events, or if you’d like to attend a Friends Party in your neighborhood by e-mailing The Philly POPS Friends Committee at friendsofthepops@phillypops.org. We’d love to get to know you.
