LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, This season of the new Philly POPS has certainly been the most amazing ever! We close our Subscription Series this weekend with Legends of Rock, featuring a rousing repertoire of favorites. The 2014/2015 season has exceeded all expectations. This second year with our terrific Music Director, Michael Krajewski, and the fabulous members of our POPS musician family clearly resonated with our patrons. We welcomed an impressive number of new subscribers this season, and the Christmas Spectacular concert series experienced record-breaking attendance. In December, we began an exciting new series of concerts celebrating American traditions and holidays — the SALUTE Series — with our December 5th I’ll Be Home for Christmas Spectacular — A Salute to the Military and First Responders. This new concert series will span the year with The Philly POPS performing in a variety of regional venues from Memorial Day Weekend at Longwood Gardens to the Philadelphia Veteran's Day Parade. At this point, we must stop and say, “thank you.” Because, without your support, this incredible year could not have happened. On behalf of the musicians, our staff, and our Board of Directors, let me express our deep gratitude. We have achieved a great deal, and there is much work left to be done. We will kick off the exciting new 2015/16 season in October with a weekend of Frank Sinatra in honor of his 100th birthday. After our new Christmas Spectacular series, our season continues with The Carole King Songbook in February. Check out Page 9 for an overview of the entire season, and be sure to subscribe early for the best seats. Please put two more dates on your calendar: On September 17th, we will host our Third Annual POPS Ball, and on December 12th, we will present Andrea Bocelli in Concert at the Wells Fargo Center. Exclusive POPS packages are still available for Bocelli’s first concert in Philadelphia in a decade. Please visit our brand new website, phillypops.org, for season subscriptions, to order your POPS Ball tickets, and for the most up-to-date information on all of our great events, and, as always, let us know if you have any feedback or questions. And now — it’s show time!

THE PHILLY POPS:

ROCKIN’ THE CONCERT HALL BY STEVE HOLT

An orchestra playing rock and roll? Of course! says Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski, who created this show. “When our audiences at Legends of Rock hear the first two or three notes of a song, they're going to say, 'Oh, I love this song!' We're doing our best to recreate these legendary songs in a very authentic way. Of course, one thing will be very different — they will be backed up by The Philly POPS! We're not exactly a rock band, but we have 65 musicians who will provide the power behind the music.” The Philly POPS is the perfect partner for the

the history-making hits of legendary rock performers, including everyone from The Beatles to Sting, from Queen to Chicago to Coldplay, and everything in between. Who are these guys leading us down rock’s memory lane by channeling all of these different styles and songs?

Multi-instrumentalist Shem von Schroeck is another former child prodigy; he’s mastered everything from double bass to Broadway to opera. Rob Evan is a member of the platinum-selling rock band Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but he’s also starred on Broadway, and created the 2009 theatrical fusion concert The Rock Tenor, which debuted to rave reviews here at Philadelphia's Wilma Theater.

wonderful: the strings, the woodwinds instead

The Rock Tenors love to solo (it’s kind of a requirement for being in a band), but Evan insists, “To me, the most fun is when we’re singing together. I'm fortunate to work with these really great musicians.” He’s especially fond of the medley that closes the first act of Legends of Rock. Talk about greatest hits! It moves from the Beatles to Crosby Stills & Nash to Yes, Kansas, and Journey. “That’s a fun first-act ender!” Other highlights of the show include music from Queen, Coldplay, The Animals, Paul McCartney, and Michael McDonald. Evan says “It’s a well

of a synthesizer. When you’re ready to deliver Queen’s We Are the Champions, it delivers big. It pounds. It really lands hard. But it’s not 'scary' rock and roll! It’s a really fun night for the entire family.” Orchestras and rock go way back. Buddy Holly is generally recognized as the first rocker to record with a string section. And The Beatles made brilliant use of violin, viola, and cello on such immortal tracks as Yesterday and Eleanor Rigby. Now, The Philly POPS and the Rock Tenors will take that tradition to the next level. Don’t stop believin’!

thought-out show. Very eclectic. It’s not just classic rock, not just the '60s or the '70s. It moves all over the place. And Michael picked material to highlight our individual strengths.” Why is this music still so popular, decades after it first hit the airwaves? Evan can’t explain it, but he knows classic rock is having a big resurgence. “A song like Don’t Stop Believin' is more popular now than when Journey recorded it!” Evan also points to Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney, both in their 70s and still going strong, and his own young children, who are into Queen and Foreigner. “I think that’s awesome.” And Evan insists this music really works in a Pops context. “At first, it was odd, but after over a decade doing these shows, it feels really at home.

HISTORY OF THE PHILLY POPS® First launched in 1979, The Philly POPS was founded by impresario Moe Septee as part of his All-Star Forum with the highly respected Marc Mostovoy. It was Septee who had the foresight to bring a major national pianist/conductor to Philadelphia to serve as the music director — Grammy Award-winning pianist Peter Nero, who led the orchestra for 34 years.

“The best pops ensemble on the planet today” —allaboutjazz.com Under the leadership of Maestro Michael Krajewski and President and CEO Frank Giordano, The Philly POPS exudes a new vitality. Giordano says, “Our goal is to provide a music experience like none other in the region. Attending a Philly POPS concert should always be fun, even before our guests enter the concert hall. We love to plan surprises and provide outstanding music with exceptional experiences. Our Music Director, Michael Krajewski, is a first-class conductor who knows how to keep an audience entertained.”

CORPORATE PARTNER SPOTLIGHT:

SHARLA FELDSCHER PUBLIC RELATIONS

Sharla Feldscher, president of Sharla Feldscher Public Relations (SFPR), is one of those lucky people — she loves her work! And it's no wonder she feels this way. The Philly POPS consulting PR Director and Philadelphia Public Relations Hall of Fame inductee has had a very exciting career. PR people are often found working in the background, but they are the ones who create the ideas or implement the ideas of others to build interest in their clients. Highlights from Sharla’s career include the promotion of the following events: — Maria von Trapp, one of the children who inspired the famed Sound of Music film and musical, visits the family’s home in Merion, where they lived after leaving Austria. — Actor Richard Chamberlain, who starred in the Sound of Music Broadway tour, holds an art exhibit at Old City's Snyderman Gallery, and the paparazzi flocks. — Former Phillies pitcher Curt Shilling presents a cheesesteak to comedian Jerry Lewis to welcome him to Philly. — New York Times best-selling author Mitch Albom visits with Sister Mary Scullion in her Project Home community to publicize his book, Have a Little Faith. — Barry Manilow holds a press conference at The Ritz-Carlton to announce his musical, Copacabana.

— Former mayor Ed Rendell judges the Most Beautiful Pig in Philadelphia contest — Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pigs, that is — to promote State Fair, a musical at the Merriam Theater. — Phillies World-Series-winning pitcher Tug McGraw, Sharla's partner in many projects, plays Al Capone with a PR dilemma at a Philadelphia Public Relations Association meeting. — Marvin Hamlisch's wife, Terre Blair Hamlisch, reads his children's book, Marvin Makes Music, at Children’s Hospital. — Sharla and her PR team, daughter Hope Horwitz and Ellen Weisberg, pull off the 2014 Philly POPS Christmas in July with POPS President Frank Giordano leading a parade to The Kimmel Center riding in a fire engine joined by General Ronald Coleman and Santa and Mrs. Claus.

For Sharla and the SFPR team, passion is the driving force behind everything they do. And The Philly POPS has held a place in their hearts for many years — during their first tenure from 1996 to 2001, and again for the past two years. Sharla says, “Anything is possible in public relations. When Frank has that sparkle in his eye and another great idea for The Philly POPS, it’s our pleasure to make his dream come true! That’s how we see our work … as dream makers!” 20 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

THE PHILLY POPS FRIENDS COMMITTEE

Dottie Giordano, Co-Chair “I was drawn to the POPS through my love of music. My husband Frank is the President and CEO. I serve on several boards alongside my husband and am delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of the POPS family.”

Cindy Wanerman, Co-Chair “A friend gave us tickets 20 years ago. At that first concert, I turned to my husband and said, 'I want a subscription.' We’ve been coming regularly ever since.”

The Friends Committee is dedicated to helping a wider circle of friends get to know The Philly POPS. The POPS brings the Great American Songbook — the work of popular composers and performers, Broadway tunes, and movie themes — to captivated audiences each year. We are certain that others will enjoy the celebration that is the POPS experience as much as we do, and our mission is to bring the enthusiasm we feel to everyone in the area. We thought that a series of community parties and get togethers organized through Community Hosts would be the right introduction for folks who weren’t familiar with the magic. We kicked off the Committee with three August events — one in Ambler at Cindy’s home, a second at Dottie and Frank’s Moorestown home, and a third at their cabin in Medford Lakes. In September, the Rittenhouse Friends were hosted at the Michaelson’s and, in December, we hosted a tree-lighting party back in Moorestown to kick off the recent holiday season. Let us know if you’d like to be a Community Host for one of our upcoming events, or if you’d like to attend a Friends Party in your neighborhood by e-mailing The Philly POPS Friends Committee at friendsofthepops@phillypops.org. We’d love to get to know you.

Find out more about The Philly POPS Friends Committee by writing to friendsofthepops@phillypops.org. Legends of Rock | May 2015 | 31
