letter from the president
A MESSAGE OF THANKS TO THOSE WHO SERVE…. Tonight, on behalf of The Philly POPS Family and our Board of Directors, I welcome you to Verizon Hall to celebrate our Second Annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders. What a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season, honoring those men and women who, each day, make our community safe and secure. For those of you here in the audience tonight, we take this opportunity to say this: your commitment and service inspire us all! We thank Governor Tom Wolf for serving as Honorary Chair of this evening’s event. We are grateful to RADM Thomas Lynch for serving a second time as Chair of the event. The Honorable Mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer, and USO of Pennsylvania President Joseph Brooks, all have made significant contributions to tonight’s events and to the other Salute Series events through the year. This event marks a second collaboration for this benefit concert between The POPS and some very special individuals. Without their support, we would not be here tonight. I would like to recognize the ongoing contribution of the chairman of The Philly POPS, Sal DeBunda, as well as that of board member Sandra Muller of Muller, Inc. Sandy’s work with Miller Brewing Company led to their becoming tonight’s Presenting Sponsor. In addition, RADM Lynch has brought on NEW DAY, his company dedicated to ensuring that veterans receive a fair opportunity to buy their own home following the completion of their service, as our Major Sponsor. To our guests tonight from all branches of the service community, we wish you and your families an especially wonderful Christmas season. Enjoy the concert! Sincerely,
Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

TINA RAMAGNANO Philly POPS subscriber Tina Ramagnano, 89, was the first female civilian to head the Special Services Department at Philadelphia’s Naval Hospital (a post typically held by a naval officer), where she Bob Hope presents the Surgeon General’s Meritorious Service Award to Tina in 1975 for her innovative recreation program at the Naval Hospital.
worked from 1953-1979. In 1972, the Secretary of the Navy awarded her for having the most innovative program for veterans at a naval hospital — Bob Hope presented her with the award. “We had over 1,400 wounded troops at one time and I became aware that many wonderful veterans groups would entertain at military hospitals,” Tina says. “One night, I happened to be seeing Bill Haley and The Comets with my husband. I said, ‘Jim, I think the boys would really enjoy seeing him,’ so I asked Bill and he agreed.” “Our auditorium was jammed for his show. We brought them down in their hospital beds. That was the beginning. And

then any time I saw a movie star or a celebrity within 100 miles, I would invite them. Ginger Rogers and Phyllis Diller, in particular, did a beautiful job.”
...the Secretary of the Navy awarded her for having the most innovative program for veterans at a naval hospital — Bob Hope presented her with the award. Today, Tina still lives in her South Philadelphia home and volunteers with the Opera and AARP. “I love to wake up in the morning with something to do,” she says. “When I left school, I went to work and I’ve been working since.” She’s been coming to POPS concerts for the last five years. “It’s always wonderful. I love every minute of it. I just get the Broad Street bus and come.” “In this career that I had, I can’t give myself all the credit — Marlene Dietrich poses with soldiers at the Latin Casino in 1959.
Ginger Rogers visits patients at the Naval Hospital in 1968.
I’m sure it came from up there,” Tina points up and says. “I did some of the most unbelievable things.” The POPS is proud to have Tina in the audience tonight.

THE PHILLY POPSŽ The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. Now in its 37th season, the POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert presentations and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives. The holidays are truly the most wonderful time of the year for the POPS. We get in the holiday spirit in November and December with our Festival Brass playing carols at tree lightings around the Philadelphia region. Our annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders concert kicks off the season with a free concert for active military, police and fire department families. The nine concerts that follow bring more than 20,000 people to the Kimmel Center to enjoy our popular Christmas Spectacular series.
