WELCOME BACK FOR OUR FIRST CONCERT WEEKEND IN 2016… Thanks to all of you, we had such a magnificent 2015, capped by our record-setting ten-show Christmas Spectacular run in December. Nine of the ten Christmas shows were SOLD OUT. Now, the POPS is dedicated to making 2016 even more special. This weekend, we welcome acclaimed vocalist Liz Callaway, along with Allison Blackwell and Bryce Ryness, to interpret the premier songwriter of our day, Carole King. Carole’s music has thrilled us since we were teenagers; her performances resonate with all of us who came of age in the ’70s. I remember playing her Tapestry album right as I fell in love for the first time and ultimately got engaged to my wife, Dottie. The Carole King Songbook is our Music Director Michael Krajewski’s program. We’re thrilled to welcome him back to the POPS and to the Kimmel to conduct this incredible concert series. The remainder of our concert season is filled with innovative programs, new to the POPS! Another singer/songwriter’s work is next up in March — The Music of Billy Joel. For the more traditional, we do have our annual excursion to Broadway in April with Broadway’s Greatest Hits and then the big surprise of the season, an original program created just for us — Cirque Goes to the Movies! Thank you for coming!

TAPESTRY: THE CAROLE KING SONGBOOK Carole King trailblazed the way for women during the singersongwriter movement of the 1960s. For the first time, “there was ownership — we who created, recorded,” King said. Beginning as a writer, with her first number-one hit at age 17, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow for The Shirelles, King went on to create dozens of chart-topping hits with then-husband Gerry Goffin. Their work includes early ’60s favorites Up on the Roof and One Fine Day. In the late 1960s, Aretha Franklin immortalized King and Goffin’s A Natural Woman. Her landmark 1971 solo album, Tapestry, sold more than 25 million units and remained the best-selling album by a female artist for a quarter century. Tapestry won her Grammy Awards for Record, Song, and Album of the Year — a first for a female writer/artist. That same year, James Taylor recorded King’s You’ve Got a Friend, which soared to number one on the charts and remains a classic today. King’s 400-plus compositions have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles. Her book, A Natural Woman: A Memoir, detailing her remarkable life and career, became a bestseller in 2012. In 2014, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical opened on Broadway. The show, about King’s life and music catalog, won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album and two Tony awards. In December 2015, King received Kennedy Center Honors for her lifetime of artistic achievement.

CHASE & SUSAN MCDANIEL Long-time POPS supporters Chase and Susan McDaniel and Chase’s sister, Nancy Miller, have partnered with POPS in Schools to create a new music education program at Delaplaine McDaniel Elementary School in Philadelphia’s Point Breeze neighborhood. In a school that lacks adequate support for music instruction, the POPS collaborated with three PSD educators to create a vibrant set of activities. Today, a choir of 30 K-3 students rehearses twice a week after school with a Philly POPS Festival Chorus member and credentialed teacher. In addition, a dozen students are experiencing early instrument readiness training with bucket drumming and another group enjoys beginning Suzuki violin training. Finally, 5th graders are being given vocal instruction in the classroom. These efforts culminated for the semester in the McDaniel Winter Festival held on December 23, 2015, when the new music students took the stage in front of their parents, teachers, and classmates

It’s rewarding to see the enthusiasm the children have when exposed to music. They even want to stay after school to learn new songs and play new instruments. —CHASE MCDANIEL to showcase their new skills. In January, these programs were continued with refreshed repertoire and extended into 3rd grade classrooms. “Getting a basic education in reading music and preliminary instrument skills is important for children — whether they choose to pursue a career in music or not. In Philadelphia, especially, it gives them the opportunity to apply to respected magnet schools focusing on the arts, such as CAPA and GAMP, which offer some of the best opportunities available to the city’s public school students,” said Frank Giordano, POPS President and CEO. “We thank Chase, Susan, and Nancy for their leadership and support of POPS in Schools.” Chase and Nancy’s great grandfather, Delaplaine McDaniel, a successful iron ore manufacturer and merchant who passed away in 1885, left the funds to build the school, which opened in 1937.

POPS IN SCHOOLS

One of the most exciting developments of 2015 was the growth in education and engagement opportunities through the POPS in Schools program. POPS in Schools supplements and enhances the School District of Philadelphia’s current music education programs. POPS artists have worked with the McDaniel School in Point Breeze, The High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), Central High School, The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, and the Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP) to coach and mentor music students,

THE POPS TODAY Thanks to its passionate supporters, The Philly POPS is generating significant growth in ticket sales and attendance, with particular growth in the POPS subscription base. These advances are the driving force behind innovative programming for new audiences, meaningful work that benefits local communities, and a new slate of in-school education programs. The Philly POPS is breaking out of the concert hall and bringing music to the streets of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns. Look for POPS artists performing in pop-up beer gardens, city parks, leisure venues, public schools, alongside some of the greatest vocalists of our time, and at events featuring renowned guest artists.

SALUTE SERIES The POPS Salute Series, an expanding portfolio of programs performed on American holidays, celebrates those who serve our country, its cities, and communities. The performances this past year — POPS at Longwood on Memorial Day weekend, POPS on Independence on July 3, POPS in Wildwood on July 4, and November 11’s performance on Veteran’s Day — showcased the magic of the orchestra to diverse and enthusiastic crowds. Our second annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas concert rang in the holiday season with a free concert for active military, police, and fire department families.

POPS IN SCHOOLS POPS in Schools enhances music education for approximately 1,000 students in the Philadelphia School District by embedding POPS artists in 10 high schools to coach and mentor music students participating in the All City Jazz program. The Philly POPS is the presenting sponsor of the All City Jazz Festival held each spring.

POPS OUTSIDE Outside the concert hall, POPS Outside brings the talented and experienced musicians of The Philly POPS to unexpected places, including monthly community engagement experiences, free pre-concert activities, and in-school events.

POPS PRESENTS POPS Presents events expand The Philly POPS’ reach into a variety of genres and with guest artists of ever-greater reputation and talent, including Andrea Bocelli and Deana Martin. The Philly POPS has proudly been a Philadelphia icon for the last four decades and happily anticipates reaching tens of thousands of new listeners through these expanding programs.
