LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to our smash hit The Music of Billy Joel! Each of our series is special. I have been looking forward to this weekend since we decided on the program last March. Billy Joel has always been popular in Philadelphia, so it’s quite wonderful to present his music for the first time with the sound of our very own Philly POPS! This year, we changed up our program schedule and had great response. The majority of our concerts — Sinatra, Christmas, and Carole King — have sold out or been close to sellouts. I’m now looking ahead to our Broadway’s Greatest Hits show in April and, most particularly, our premiere of an original program for May — Cirque Goes to the Movies! Cirque features the amazing acrobats of Cirque de la Symphonie in a Michael Krajewski created show that you will see first. Next season, we have an incredible variety of popular music — spanning the decades from jazz to rock to modern Broadway. This newly announced 2016/2017 season includes Elvis; the Beatles’ 50th celebration of the Sgt. Pepper’s album; the freshest, newest hits from Broadway; and a centennial celebration of Ella Fitzgerald. The new POPS Rocks series that premiered last May closes out next season with the music of the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Journey. I think it’s the strongest lineup we’ve ever had. THE MAKING OF PIANO MAN MICHAEL CAVANAUGH HAVE YOU ALWAYS LOVED MUSIC?
Growing up in Cleveland, there was music in my house all the time. The first instrument my parents bought me was a snare drum when I was 5. It was too loud, and then one day it disappeared. I was always singing. I would use a wooden spoon as a pretend microphone. When I was 7, my mom bought a piano for herself, but I was all over it. I was cranking out songs and playing it like crazy, so they got me piano lessons.
WHEN DID YOU START PERFORMING?
I put my first band together in 6th grade — keyboard and drums. We played at the talent show, and all the girls screamed. And I thought to myself: This is the only way I’m ever gonna make girls scream. By the time I was 13 or 14, I was playing 4-5 nights a week in nightclubs. Fortunately, I was a good kid. My parents were always there. We weren’t breaking any laws — except maybe curfew!
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A BILLY JOEL FAN?
When I was 21, I camped out in the snow to get Billy Joel tickets in Cleveland. It was like 13 degrees — that’s how big of a fan I was! I’m glad I don’t have to do that anymore.

Guest artist Michael Cavanaugh starred in Broadway’s Movin’ Out — the show that combined dance with Billy Joel’s songbook. Movin’ Out ran from 2002–2005 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical. Today, Michael performs with symphony orchestras around the country. HOW DID YOU MEET THE PIANO MAN HIMSELF?
In 1999, I moved to Las Vegas to play at a dueling piano bar at New York, New York Hotel and Casino. One night, Billy Joel’s touring manager Max called me and says, “I’m bringing Billy to come hear you at the piano bar.” Billy watched me play for an hour and was requesting songs. At the end of the set, Max says, “You want Billy to get on the other piano and play with you?” We had a blast! We were jamming on the Beatles and Elvis — trading off verses and singing together. All I could think was: Is this really happening?
AND THAT EXPERIENCE LED YOU TO BROADWAY?
Two months later, I went to New York, met Twyla Tharp, and auditioned with the Movin’ Out band. We’d never met each other, but we played Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, and it sounded like we’d been playing together for 10 years. Everything worked out, and I moved to New York.
WHAT WAS STARRING IN MOVIN’ OUT LIKE?
Very intense. Playing in bands and piano bars was never the level of pressure that you have on Broadway. The first time I had to do Billy’s whole show in front of him, I don’t think I slept for a week. I remember singing Uptown Girl, and I completely screwed up the words. I look at Billy, and he’s laughing. I started laughing, and then I relaxed. It was a crazy time. I was nominated for a Tony Award. I was getting phone calls to open NASDAQ and appear in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. People back home in Ohio were losing their minds. It changed my life.

HOW PHILADELPHIA CREATED BILLY JOEL Back in 1971, Joel was a no-name 22-year-old from Long Island. Then one day in 1972, local music producer Dennis Wilen, who had launched a live 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia concert series from Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studios, got wind of Joel during a visit to New York and invited him to do a show. On April 15th, Joel sat down at Sigma’s piano. He played through much of Cold Spring Harbor, including “She’s Got a Way,” but it was a new and previously unrecorded song that really impressed Wilen and WMMR’s deejays: “Captain Jack,” based on a real-life neighborhood heroin dealer in New York City. In the following days and weeks, the station put its live Sigma recording of the song on constant rotation. Other stations on the East Coast caught on, and before long, a lot of people were singing the weird tune. Over at Columbia Records, legendary producer Clive Davis heard the buzz and signed Joel to a contract. Joel released the Piano Man album the next year, and the rest, as you know, is history. “It had a tremendous ripple effect,” Joel tells us. “The song just took on a life of its own.” Longtime Philly DJ Michael Tearson was working at WMMR at the time and says listeners couldn’t get enough of “Captain Jack.” “They wanted to hear it over and over and over again,” he remembers. “It was the top-requested item for the next two years.”
