LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, I so totally enjoyed the excitement of Christmas, but it’s been too long since we’ve presented a Subscription Series concert here at the Kimmel! And I’m glad that it’s the 50th anniversary of one of the best albums ever produced. Get ready for Sgt. Pepper Celebration! This music changed the world, and I remember the first time Dottie and I heard it. Last fall, we talked about POPS in Schools, our twelve school program with the School District of Philadelphia. We enjoyed Winter Festivals at both of our elementary schools—the Delaplaine McDaniel School in Point Breeze and Isaac Sheppard Elementary at 2nd and Cambria and are looking forward to our third annual All City Jazz Festival in June. If you want to hear the best of the high schoolers playing some Ella Fitzgerald favorites, stop in Commonwealth Plaza before any of the Ella, Louis & All That Jazz shows in April. And take a look inside our program book to see some of the pictures that were taken at these great student events. The Salute Series is set for its second annual Memorial Day weekend concert at the Mann Center and for Independence Mall for July 3 and 4. These concerts are free to everyone. If you’d like to support the POPS’s civic engagement through these free concerts, helping us to bring music and recognition to members of our active military, our veterans, and first responders, take a look at our website: phillypops.org/SALUTE. Now for the big news: our 2017/2018 Season Announcement is set for Valentine’s Day. The Philly POPS's heart to the City of Philadelphia is next year’s incredible schedule—check Facebook or our website to get the details in just these few weeks! I hope you enjoy today’s concert and the flashback to the incomparable magic of The Beatles!

The Beatles
SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND Review It took 129 days to record, between autumn 1966 and spring 1967, and it changed the world. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band may have all but disappeared under an avalanche of hyperbole, but if there’s one reason why this album stands the test of time it’s because its sum is greater than its whole. After five listens most people will know it as a suite, where Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds always follows With a Little Help from My Friends. And it will always be thus. The reason it took 129 days to piece together isn’t due to the band’s indulgences – on the contrary, The Beatles were extremely disciplined during their studio sessions. It’s simply because guiding an album this complex to fruition in those days took a long time. These guys weren’t just recording songs; they were inventing the stuff with which to make this record as they went along. But with George Martin and his backroom boys on hand, the Faberge psychedelic egg that was finally laid on the eve of the Summer of Love came so fully-realised that it changed the way we listened to recorded sound forever. Sgt Pepper’s… is at once warm and familiar, yet wild and strange; cosy and English with a very empirical eye on the exotica of the East (note George Harrison’s underrated Within You Without You). Shot through with Peter Blake-assisted Edwardiana, it was also as fashionable as it could possibly be. It was also a release key in the canon of concept albums, coming with its own alter-ego mythology and very much addressing the pressing concerns of their generation, ie: how to achieve higher states of consciousness in 60s suburbia. It is riddled with The Beatles’ trademark love/hate affair with the

Establishment as their own lives were suddenly shoved unceremoniously up against those of the chattering classes, encapsulated by She’s Leaving Home’s blow at straight parenthood, Lovely Rita’s suggestion of sexual deviancy, and A Day in the Life’s oblique references to minds being blown on buses in rush hour traffic. Yet it’s all a far cry from the militancy of their American peers. Paul McCartney’s When I’m 64 is pure nostalgia for his parents’ golden age, one which was taken from them. It’s less a kicking out of the jams, more a spreading them on scones at teatime. Yet what was revolutionary was the sonic carpet that enveloped the ears and sent the listener spinning into other realms. There was the nursery rhyme surrealism of Lucy in the Sky…, the crazed calliopes of Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite! and, of course, the lysergic collage of A Day in the Life, promising the meaning of life in its endless final chord. And it still rings on today. Chris Jones 2007, BBC bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/5dcz

CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR Since its initial performance in 1996, Classical Mystery Tour has performed for nearly 20 years with more than 100 orchestras in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The group played to packed houses at the Sydney Opera House, and has performed with America’s most prestigious orchestras: the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, among many others. The four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert. The show presents more than two dozen Beatles tunes transcribed note-for-note and performed exactly as they were originally recorded. Enjoy the classical/rock blend on "I Am the Walrus” and relish the cascading orchestral crescendo on “A Day in the Life.” Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles — from early Beatles music on through the solo years — like you've never heard them before. Many have called it “the best show The Beatles never did!”
Classical Mystery Tour CDs and T-shirts are available for purchase on their website: classicalmysterytour.com.

THE PHILLY POPS® The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. The POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert presentations and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives. Now in its 38th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 100,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from colonial times to the 1920s up through today’s chart toppers. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances – including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I’ll Be Home for Christmas — A Salute to the Military and First Responders event – celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside brings POPS music to local communities. The Philly POPS performs as a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and at venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what probably steered me toward becoming a pops conductor.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream — no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t tried.”
12 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a major American orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony, and music director of Modesto Symphony — all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops, and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of the Philly POPS. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra — we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and creating tributes to American popular music legends like Simon & Garfunkel and Carole King. “I feel that the Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia — it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellence in music and the performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynonna Judd, Jason Alexander, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography, and traveling — especially to Italy.

POPS IN SCHOOLS Launched in 2015, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that enhances music education for approximately 1,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia by embedding Philly POPS artists in schools to coach and mentor music students. In a school system that has seen cutbacks in arts programs over the past decade, POPS in Schools provides customized programs, music training and education, performance opportunities, and access to experience professional concerts throughout Philadelphia. The newest POPS in Schools program, at the Isaac A. Sheppard School in North Philadelphia, supports and enhances music education in collaboration with the School District of Philadelphia. In partnership with Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance and lead consultant/ retired educator Diane Dannenfelser, The POPS launched an elective choir for second through fourth graders, provides general music education and bucket drumming lessons for the entire third grade. In addition, POPS Violist and Teaching Artist, Marj Goldberg, is leading an adapted Suzuki strings program for all 31 kindergartners. Meeting weekly at school, 2016's work culminated in the first-ever student-led musical performances at the school.

Beasley Media Group is the proud ownership group of 93.3 WMMR, 102.9 WMGK, 95.7 WBEN, and 97.5 WPEN — four Philadelphia radio stations dedicated to enhancing life in the communities they serve. WMMR’s morning hosts Preston & Steve have long been involved in the fight against hunger. The duo started ‘camping out’ for hunger in 1998 with a modest goal of collecting one ton of donated food. In 2016, Preston & Steve’s Camp Out For Hunger collected an amazing 683 tons of food (and over $74,000 in monetary donations) for Philabundance, which sorts and distributes food to 350 local agencies to help hunger in our communities. WMGK was proud to partner with the Philly POPS for 2016’s first annual Memorial Salute concert at The Mann Center. Honoring those who serve and supporting veterans is one of WMGK's main annual initiatives. Each June, the entire staff joins morning host John DeBella in encouraging listeners to make a donation to his Veterans Radiothon. Over the past 10 years, the John DeBella Veterans Radiothon has raised $1 million for local veterans via the Veterans Multi-Service Center.

At 95.7 BEN-FM, the holiday season brings an opportunity to brighten the lives of families in our community that have fallen on tough times. The station’s annual Adopt A Family Radiothon is held live each December from outside of Comcast Center. The $60,000+ raised goes to assist Volunteers of America Delaware Valley’s Adopt a Family program. “Partnering with Beasley’s radio stations has been a wonderful experience for The POPS,” said Frank Giordano, President and CEO of the Philly POPS. “While entertaining Philadelphians by playing some of the best music on the airwaves, WMMR, WMGK, and WBEN are also hard at work improving lives in our communities. We look forward to continuing to entertain, inspire, and honor Philadelphians together.”
“We are proud of our continuing partnership with the Philly POPS and their legendary support of the arts, music, and entertainment in Philadelphia. As a music and entertainment institution with long-tenured radio stations in the Delaware Valley, we feel a responsibility to connect our audience with an important organization like the Philly POPS." — PAUL BLAKE VICE PRESIDENT/DIRECTOR OF SALES, BEASLEY MEDIA GROUP PHILADELPHIA Sgt. Pops offer a patriotic trip back in time By Peter Dobrin
T
CLASSICAL MUSIC CRITIC
he Philly Pops plucked the reliably resonant strings of patriotism Sunday night. How could it have been otherwise? Using Independence Hall as a heady backdrop, with an estimated 15,000 listeners stretched across the mall, the Pops were back for their annual sound track to Independence Day festivities. Conductor Michael Krajewski presided over a program of Americana very much like the ones of years past. Yet if something was different this time, that something was us. The political realm has become unrecognizable since our last musical gathering at this birthplace of a great idea for a nation, and it was hard to escape the thought that what kind of America you listened for had at least something to do with the America you see us becoming. Music is mirror. Who did listeners sense peering back? The amplified words of John F. Kennedy, Lincoln, Washington, and the Declaration of Independence in James Beckel’s orchestral piece Liberty for All came over the mall as a dignified redress to so much of the poison that has escaped into the atmosphere lately. Singer Justin Hopkins was the dramatic narrator.

Continued from A1 hanged for treason — got no traction at all. “We like to believe that the key events — voting for independence, adopting Jefferson’s declaration, signing the parchment — all happened on one dramatic day, July 4, 1776,” said professor Stuart Leibiger, an expert on the American Revolution who teaches history at La Salle University. But the creation and signing of the declaration evolved during a succession of proximate events and dates in June, July and August — motions, votes, revisions,
Allison Blackwell and Justin Hopkins were part of the annual Philly Pops concert at Independence Mall. Conductor Michael Krajewski led a program of Americana in words and music. STEVEN M. FALK / Staff Photographer And if America idealized is the image of waving flags silhouetted against a brightly lit Independence Hall, the Pops sent those
patriots home with a sound track of “God Bless America” still ringing in their ears and beating in their hearts.
There’s something startlingly hokey and old-fashioned about the Pops’ programming at these concerts — this was the 15th
debates and approvals. So, how did July 4 lay claim as the birth date of independence? It was on that date that the Continental Congress approved and adopted the declaration, severing ties to Great Britain. Also that day Congress ordered the first copies printed. And there’s that big, bold date on the document itself: In CONGRESS, July 4, 1776. “It was that date, July 4, that the country recognized as the public’s irreversible stand for independence,” said Coxey Toogood, historian at Independence National Historical Park. “The Declaration offered the world a detailed justification for the declaration of independence made
in Congress two days earlier.” Some public celebrations marked the July 4 date even while the revolution was being fought. But generally, Leibiger said, the anniversary didn’t get wide attention in the early years. Only in the 19th century, when the last Revolutionary War statesmen and veterans were dying off, and the story of the revolution itself was becoming legend, did the anniversary begin to get its due. “At that point,” Leibiger said, “mythology compressed several days’ events into one magical day, probably because that is the date that appears on the parchment.”
That, he said, furthered a trend of giving credit to Jefferson, who drafted the declaration, as opposed to Adams, who led the floor fight for independence that culminated in the July 2 vote. Both men helped cement July 4 as the official date during their final act on the public stage, when they died on the same day in 1826 — July 4.
year — and the music could come from any number of days gone by. The audience looked largely young, and yet From Sea to Shining Sea, a musical tour across America crafted by Robert Wendel, was a name-thattune medley likely to confound anyone who has not yet opened the mail to find an AARP card. “Carolina in the Morning”? “Tennessee Waltz”? Some of these melodies must have been meeting virgin ears. Even so, it was nice to see the Pops handing them off to a new generation. And if you closed your eyes during the George M. Cohan medley, you’d have sworn the Voices of the Philly Pops had arrived on loan from Lawrence Welk. Patriotic tunes — “This Is My Country,” “Stars and Stripes Forever” — were to be expected. But for my money it was vocalist Allison Blackwell who made the evening. In a luscious orchestration of Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me,” the Pops and Blackwell created one of those great city moments when everything seems to stop. The sounds of goodness, sincerity and warmth poured forth. Someone, please, put these qualities in a bottle. We may really need them when the Pops returns this time next year. +pdobrin@phillynews.com ^215-854-5611
