Encore! Broadway's Greatest Hits 2016

Page 1

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

We’ve had a particularly rich year of success — from Sinatra: A Centennial Celebration to The Music of Billy Joel. This weekend, we’re proud to bring you one of our more traditional series, Broadway’s Greatest Hits. It is a special treat to see our magnificent orchestra showcase a range of Broadway’s best! We’re well into the Subscription Season renewal process—and, more good news, we’re seeing a great response to the 2016/2017 season, which includes Elvis, the Beatles, the best of modern Broadway, and a centennial celebration of Ella Fitzgerald. Don’t miss your opportunity for the best seats! Perhaps the best news of the month was the announcement of our inaugural Memorial Salute concert at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts. On Saturday, May 28, 7pm, the POPS full orchestra accompanied by the Voices of the Philly POPS will return to the Mann for the first time in a decade. The concert, part of our Salute Series, is dedicated to honoring those who commit to a life of service in the military, police, fire departments and other first responders. Of course, the May concert, featuring native Philadelphians and Broadway sensations Hugh Panaro and Allison Blackwell, will particularly honor the service and sacrifice of veterans. Don’t forget to plan for Cirque Goes to the Movies, our May concert series — it’s a premiere program created by Michael Krajewski just for Philadelphia! Thank you for joining us today,

Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

Many people are interested in a symphony orchestra, but don’t feel like classical music is for them. When we’re playing the music of Frank Sinatra, movie soundtracks, Broadway, and Top 40, audiences get a kick out of hearing a full orchestra with highly trained musicians playing songs that they feel is their music. —MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI 8 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

spotlight

THE POPS TODAY Thanks to its passionate supporters, The Philly POPS is generating significant growth in ticket sales and attendance, with particular growth in the POPS subscription base. These advances are the driving force behind innovative programming for new audiences, meaningful work that benefits local communities, and a new slate of in-school education programs. The Philly POPS is breaking out of the concert hall and bringing music to the streets of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns. Look for POPS artists performing in pop-up beer gardens, city parks, leisure venues, public schools, alongside some of the greatest vocalists of our time, and at events featuring renowned guest artists.

SALUTE SERIES The POPS Salute Series, an expanding portfolio of programs performed on American holidays, celebrates those who serve our country, its cities, and communities. The performances this year — POPS at Longwood on Memorial Day weekend, POPS on Independence on July 3, POPS in Wildwood on July 4, and November 11’s performance on Veterans Day — showcased the magic of the orchestra to diverse and enthusiastic crowds. Our second annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas concert rang in the holiday season with a free concert for active military, police, and fire department families.

POPS IN SCHOOLS POPS in Schools enhances music education for approximately 1,000 students in the Philadelphia School District by embedding POPS artists in 10 high schools to coach and mentor music students participating in the All-City Jazz program. The Philly POPS is the presenting sponsor of the All-City Jazz Festival held each June.

POPS OUTSIDE Outside the concert hall, POPS Outside brings the talented and experienced musicians of The Philly POPS to unexpected places, including monthly community engagement experiences, free pre-concert activities, and in-school events.

POPS PRESENTS POPS Presents events expand The Philly POPS’ reach into a variety of genres and with guest artists of ever-greater reputation and talent, including Andrea Bocelli and Deana Martin. The Philly POPS has proudly been a Philadelphia icon for the last four decades and happily anticipates reaching tens of thousands of new listeners through these expanding programs.
