LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, It’s been too long since we’ve presented a Subscription Series concert at the Kimmel! I am thrilled to be back and excited that it’s ELVIS: The King’s Songbook. Everyone remembers the first time they saw Elvis perform. There is no one more charismatic— whether as a movie star or a rock icon. What everyone forgets is this: Elvis reinvented rock 'n' roll as the American popular music form, adapting from multiple uniquely American traditions including blues, gospel, and even a little bit of country. His magical performances opened the door; his contribution to our shared music history is sometimes lost in the brilliance of his presentation. This is the season that the POPS marches through the very best of popular music — celebrating Ella’s centennial year with an assist from the music of Louis Armstrong to Elvis to the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ life-changing Sgt. Pepper’s album to the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac straight through to the blockbuster hits of modern Broadway. And, of course, the POPS Christmas tradition is a holiday kick-off party for everyone. As the POPS has grown over the past seasons, we’ve made it our mission to give back to the community that we strive to inspire, entertain, and serve. POPS in Schools! provides supplemental educational programming for twelve School District of Philadelphia locations. The newest is the Isaac Sheppard Elementary School at 2nd and Cambria — Suzuki violin for kindergarten, choir for grades one through four, and general music orientation for all. Of course, pictures to come! The Salute Series had an amazing 2016 with incredible shows on Memorial Day weekend at the Mann Center and on Independence Mall for July 3 and 4—and more to come! We’re set for Veterans Day at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and for our third annual Christmas Salute scheduled for December 2. If you’d like to support the POPS’s civic engagement through these free concerts, helping us to bring music to members our active military, our veterans and first responders, take a look at our website: phillypops.org/SALUTE. I want to wish you an amazing season at the POPS, hoping that you’ll enjoy all of these moments ahead as much as I do!

THE PHILLY POPS® The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. The POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert presentations and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives. Now in its 38th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 100,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from colonial times to the 1920s up through today’s chart toppers. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances – including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I’ll Be Home for Christmas — A Salute to the Military and First Responders event – celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside brings POPS music to local communities. The Philly POPS performs as a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and at venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

SPOTLIGHT
The Philly POPS Today Thanks to its passionate supporters, The Philly POPS is generating significant growth in ticket sales and attendance, with particular growth in the POPS subscription base. These advances are the driving force behind innovative programming for new audiences, meaningful work that benefits local communities, and a new slate of in-school education programs. The Philly POPS is breaking out of the concert hall and bringing music to the streets of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns. Look for POPS artists performing in pop-up beer gardens, city parks, leisure venues, public schools, and alongside some of the greatest vocalists of our time.
Salute Series The Salute Series, an expanding portfolio of programs performed on American holidays, celebrates those who serve our country, its cities, and communities. Performances including Memorial Salute, POPS on Independence on July 3, POPS in Philadelphia on July 4, and Veterans Salute showcase the magic of the orchestra to diverse and enthusiastic crowds. The annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas concert rings in the holiday season with a free concert for active military, police, and fire department families.
POPS in Schools POPS in Schools enhances music education for approximately 1,000 students in the Philadelphia School District by embedding POPS artists in ten high schools to coach and mentor music students participating in the All City Jazz program. The Philly POPS is the presenting sponsor of the All City Jazz Festival held each spring.
POPS Outside Outside the concert hall, POPS Outside brings the talented and experienced musicians of the Philly POPS to unexpected places, including monthly community engagement experiences, free pre-concert activities, and in-school events.
POPS Presents POPS Presents events expand The Philly POPS' reach into a variety of genres and with guest artists of ever-greater reputation and talent, including Andrea Bocelli and Deana Martin. The Philly POPS has proudly been a Philadelphia icon for the last four decades and happily anticipates reaching tens of thousands of new listeners through these expanding programs.

music director
MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what probably steered me toward becoming a pops conductor.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream — no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t tried.”
10 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a major American orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony, and music director of Modesto Symphony — all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops, and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra — we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and creating tributes to American popular music legends like Simon & Garfunkel and Carole King. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia — it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellence in music and the performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynonna Judd, Jason Alexander, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography, and traveling — especially to Italy.

vocalist
ALLISON BLACKWELL A frequent collaborator with Maestro Michael Krajewski and The Philly POPS, Allison Blackwell is thrilled to be returning to her hometown of Philadelphia to celebrate the music of Elvis Presley. Last seen with The Philly POPS for its July 3rd Independence Hall concert, Philadelphia Inquirer reviewer Peter Dobrin noted, “…for my money it was vocalist Allison Blackwell who made the evening. In a luscious orchestration of Gershwin’s ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’, the POPS and Blackwell created one of those great city moments when everything seems to stop. The sounds of goodness, sincerity, and warmth poured forth.” A singer with a versatile range from opera to gospel, Allison has been seen in such Broadway shows as The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, A Night With Janis Joplin, and Disney’s The Lion King. She has been a guest artist with various orchestras across the country and made her Philly POPS debut last February in Tapestry: Carole King Songbook. Ms. Blackwell has also been seen in two Live from Lincoln Center on PBS productions: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starring Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson and Show Boat starring Vanessa Williams and Norm Lewis. Allison is a graduate of Springfield Township High School in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. She holds a M.M. in Musical Theatre from The Boston Conservatory and a B.A. in English from Spelman College. She dedicates these concerts to her mother and father who taught her to dream without fear.

DAVE BENNETT A multi-instrument phenomenon, Dave Bennett is a clarinet virtuoso who plays electric guitar, piano, drums and vocalizes. He is the only artist anywhere saluting The Roots of Pop, covering music from the Swing Era to early Rockabilly and Country, to Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and more. His 2013 CD Don't Be That Way met with critical acclaim. His second CD, slated for 2016 release, is currently in production featuring original compositions influenced by Dave’s appreciation of jazz, blues, swing, gospel, and pop.
“My favorite era of Elvis is 1954 to 1956 when he was 19 to 21 — he was purely going by instinct and he was revolutionizing music. In sixth grade, I instantly fell in love with the "Elvis ‘56" album and as a result, taught myself to sing and play guitar.” —DAVE BENNETT

ELVIS SPOTLIGHT Excerpted from the If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra album booklet, October 2015
"Elvis ... loved the big sound and fullness of an orchestra. If he had his way, he would have had a full 60-piece orchestra on his stage performances. Elvis never seemed satisfied after many of his recording sessions. If he had it his way … he would have made the sound fuller … added richness with even more instruments. What I would like people to know is that Elvis was so much more than rock ‘n’ roll. Elvis taught himself by listening to the music of those artists who inspired him. His personal record collection was so diverse from classical as in the Boston Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, opera, R&B, country, gospel, crooners, harmonizing groups and ballads." —Priscilla Presley
