LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, April is International Jazz Month—and what better way to celebrate than to present Byron Stripling and Marva Hicks singing Ella and Louis! This is our legacy program for the season—each year we bring you at least one show dedicated to that magical time in American popular music that birthed jazz, the big bands, and swing. Our POPS in Schools education programming for this series is terrific—take a look at page 24 for the full description of how the students of the School District of Philadelphia are connected to the history of jazz through Ella! We’re well into the Subscription Season renewal process—and, more good news, we’re seeing a great response to the 2017/2018 season which includes the music of Star Wars and Elton John, a salute to the popular legacy of Leonard Bernstein in his centennial year and a POPS Rocks sing-along focused on the music of the Stones, Zeppelin, and Queen. Don’t miss your opportunity to line up the very best seats for what is certain to be an amazing year. I want to take a moment this month to remind you that ticket sales cover only a percentage of the costs of bringing the orchestra to you for each concert series. If, as you plan your ticket purchases, you would consider a donation in support of the orchestra or of our many educational and engagement activities, we would greatly appreciate your generosity. We’ve had about 1,000 donations already this fiscal year and are hoping for 200 more. The vibrant health of today’s POPS and, most particularly the POPS in Schools program detailed on our website, is a testament to your ongoing support. We cannot do any of it without you! Don’t forget to plan for POPS Rocks: The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Journey coming up in May. Our rock shows, many of them created by Michael Krajewski just for us, have found a new and vibrant audience…and fill Verizon Hall to capacity with energy and fun. I’ll always love the more traditional POPS swinging and jazzing, but these new shows certainly bring down the house! Thank you for joining us today,

Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

Ella, Louis & All That Jazz | March-April 2017 | 5

ELLA FITZGERALD Dubbed “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She worked with all the jazz greats: Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, and Benny Goodman. She performed at top venues all over the world, and packed them to the hilt. Her audiences were as diverse as her vocal range. They were rich and poor, made up of all races, all religions and all nationalities.

Humble Beginnings Ella Jane Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Virginia on April 25, 1917. Her parents parted ways shortly thereafter and her mother moved her to Yonkers, New York. After her mother and stepfather tragically passed away, Ella returned to Virginia and went through a rough patch that landed her in reform school. By age 15, she found herself alone and broke during the Great Depression. Later in life, Ella appreciated her difficult years for helping to mature and summon emotions for performances.

Wowing the Crowd In 1934 Ella won the opportunity to compete in Amateur Night at the Apollo. She sang Hoagy Carmichael's “Judy.” The crowd demanded an encore. “Once up there, I felt the acceptance and love from my audience,” Ella said. “I knew I wanted to sing before people the rest of my life.” She began entering - and winning - every talent show she could find, eventually meeting drummer and bandleader Chick Webb who gave her a spot in his band.

Sharon B. Maguire

Jazzing Things Up In 1936, Ella’s first recording “Love and Kisses” was released and in 1938, at the age of 21, she released a playful version of the nursery rhyme, “A-Tisket, A-Tasket.” The album sold 1 million copies, hit number one, and stayed on the pop charts for 17 weeks. Suddenly, Ella Fitzgerald was famous.

6 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

Coming into Her Own In the 1950s, Ella began working with Louis Armstrong and also recorded a series of widely-popular covers of albums by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, the Gershwins, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and Rodgers and Hart. “I never knew how good our songs were until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them,” Ira Gershwin once remarked.

Overcoming Discrimination Ella's manager Norman Granz felt very strongly about civil rights and required equal treatment for his musicians at hotels, restaurants or concert halls. Norman wasn't the only one willing to stand up for Ella. She received support from numerous celebrity fans, including a zealous Marilyn Monroe who insisted that the owner of Sharon B. Maguire

the popular Mocambo nightclub book Ella.

Worldwide recognition Ella received the National Medal of Arts from President Ronald Reagan, Kennedy Center Honors, France’s Commander of Arts and Letters award, and honorary doctorates from Yale, Dartmouth and several other universities. In 1991, she gave her final concert at New York's renowned Carnegie Hall. On June 15, 1996, Ella Fitzgerald passed away in her Beverly Hills home. music director

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what probably steered me toward becoming a pops conductor.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream — no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t tried.”

8 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a major American orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony, and music director of Modesto Symphony — all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops, and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of the Philly POPS. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra — we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and creating tributes to American popular music legends like Simon & Garfunkel and Carole King. “I feel that the Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia — it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellence in music and the performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynonna Judd, Jason Alexander, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography, and traveling — especially to Italy.

“I feel that the Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts, and I love Philadelphia…" — MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI

ROBIN HAUNER AND MICHAEL SCOTT

Robin Hauner and Mike Scott have been POPS subscribers for several years and regularly attend the POPS Ball. They met at Devon Seafood Grill and were married four years ago. Robin, a retired insurance professional, grew up on Long Island. Mike, who is from the Scranton area, is an attorney in Center City. They live in Gladwyne. Robin and Mike’s children have made successful careers for themselves in places near and far, including Colorado, Los Angeles, New York, and in nearby Wynnewood — where their grandsons live. They enjoy golfing together and tend to go regularly in the summer and when they visit their winter home in Palm Beach, Florida. Mike said that Robin is the better golfer, but she said, “no, neither of us is any good, but I’m more willing to take lessons.” They also both read a lot and Mike intends to learn how to play the piano whenever work stops keeping him so busy. Traveling through France — once to Normandy and once to Provence — on group bicycle trips have been some of their favorite vacations. On those trips, they bike about 20-25 miles a day.

FAVORITE CONCERTS “Every year, my favorite is the Christmas show,” Mike said. “Absolutely every year.” Robin agrees and also especially remembers the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel shows.

“As the younger generation of our city continues to see a decline in funding for the arts in schools, I am honored to partner with my colleagues at the Philly POPS to contribute to the growth of music programs in the region. I have formed special bonds with several local students, meeting weekly to work on saxophone and clarinet technique, improvising, and college audition prep. JUNE 9, 2017— SAVE THE DATE! The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Philly POPS present the All-City Jazz Festival

“The Philly POPS' three year-old POPS in Schools program and Kimmel Center Education share a mission of educating and inspiring young Philadelphians. After presenting the School District of Philadelphia’s All-City Jazz Festival for two years, the POPS has now partnered with the Kimmel Center, the city’s premier performing arts venue to provide an enhanced experience for students, parents and audiences. As the home of the Philly POPS, we can’t think of a better organization and venue to join forces with for this special event.” — Frank Giordano President and CEO of the Philly POPS

ANNE EWERS IS THE PRESIDENT & CEO OF KIMMEL CENTER, INC, which owns The Kimmel Center, The Merriam Theater, and operates The Academy of Music. Home to eight Resident Companies, The Kimmel Center produces and presents Broadway, theater, jazz and popular mix. Under Ms. Ewers leadership, the Center retired its $30 million construction debt, raised the endowment from $40 million to $72 million and garnered $10 million to establish a biennial city-wide festival, The Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. In tandem with Kieran Timberlake Architects, the Company has developed a Master Plan for which $14 million has been raised to improve Verizon Hall acoustics, renovate Hamilton Garden and Innovation Studio and open Volvér with famed iron chef Jose Garces. Active in her community and in several professional organizations, Ms. Ewers serves the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and is a member of the Philadelphia Women’s Forum. She recently completed 6 years of service on the Executive Committee of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Ewers is also a frequent panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Ms. Ewers has a Bachelor of Arts in theatre and Bachelor of Music from Fontbonne University (1974) and a Master of Music in opera production from the University of Texas at Austin (1977).

In an effort to cultivate the next generation of theatergoers and arts lovers, the Kimmel Center continues to expand its robust set of education offerings for families, students, teachers, and aspiring artists. With ten full education programs, the Kimmel Center reaches students of all ages and skill levels, stimulating students’ artistic expression and thought through multidisciplinary experiences. Whether toddlers or teenagers, musical mavericks or the newest newbies—the programs educate, engage, and inspire the next generation!

“We are delighted to partner with our esteemed Resident Company, the Philly POPS, to present the 2017 All-City Jazz Festival to Philadelphia. With ten education programs for all ages, our year round mission is to transform lives daily through the arts. This Festival is an additional opportunity for the Kimmel Center to unite as a Campus to reach, educate, and inspire future generations of arts lovers.” — Anne Ewers President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts
