LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, We are celebrating the final concert series of this amazing season with some of the most popular music of three unforgettable bands—the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Journey. Through the exuberance of this performance, we want to express our thanks to all of you for making this season so very special! Our Salute Series is now completely free. Register at phillypops.org/Salute for Memorial Day at the Mann on May 27. We anticipate 500 choir members—our own Festival Chorus and the Voices of the POPS, along with students from area high schools, all gathered to sing in honor of those who sacrificed for our nation. We welcome Mandy Gonzalez, now appearing on Broadway in Hamilton and POPS favorite Tony DeSare back for POPS on Independence @ Wawa Welcome America on July 3rd. Both will appear again at POPS on the Parkway on July 4th—this time with The Philly POPS BIG Band. The BIG Band will also play on the morning of the 4th at the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony. We’re ever grateful to Comcast NBCUniversal for their generous support of our series. My friend and colleague Sal DeBunda has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the POPS for the past five years. It’s been a wonderful ride. I could not have appreciated his support and his contribution more. It is with my heartfelt thanks that he completes his term at the end of June. The POPS of today would not be the vibrant, healthy, thrilling organization that it is without him. I know that you join me in wishing him well. It’s been a great season—and I look forward to an even more eventful one next fall. See you at the POPS!

CHAIRMAN'S LETTER Dear Friends, On June 30, my five-year term as Chairman of the Board of Directors for The Philly POPS comes to an end. I have so many wonderful memories of my life at the POPS and I am so proud of what the POPS team has accomplished during this time that it’s difficult to express them in a page. It’s been a great ride—from that first meeting following the re-birth of the POPS as an independent organization, to that very first POPS Ball gala at the Bellevue, to our sold-out Sinatra weekend that kicked off the 2015-2016 season. The growth of the organization has been astounding. I know that the best is yet to come! Personally, I loved the Cirque Goes to the Movies program last May and the Billy Joel show last March as well as that great Sinatra show the best. In that order. And I loved the way that Frank Giordano made every POPS concert a wonderful, fizz-y, and fun place to be. And I loved the way that the crowds expanded and that they quickly began to enjoy the shows as much as I always have. Thank you to Frank and to the amazing staff of the POPS, thank you to the other members of our Board of Directors, thank you to my partners at Archer & Greiner, who have supported both the POPS and my work there throughout, and, most of all, thank you to my most significant other, Cheryl Finocchiaro. Without all their contributions, we could not have the vibrant, exuberant POPS of today. And thanks to all of you. See you at the POPS!

Salvatore M. DeBunda, Esq., Chairman

POPS ROCKS! The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Journey—all ranked as some of the world’s best-selling musical groups—were among the super bands of the '70s and '80s characterized by diverse musical talent, incredible vocals, and original songwriting with broadly appealing themes. The Eagles got together in Los Angeles in 1971 with original members Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner, adding Don Felder in 1974. The California rock band combined country and blues with hard rock and creative songwriting, producing favorites such as “Take It Easy,” “Witchy Woman,” and “Desperado.” The band’s 1976 compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, is the second best-selling album of all time, right behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller, selling 29 million copies. According to Rolling Stone: “No other band did as much to translate the explosively creative, politicized rock of the 1960s into the massively popular, de-politicized rock of the 1970s as the Eagles.” Fleetwood Mac, the British-American blues band, formed in London in 1967. The band evolved significantly from its formation and today includes members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, for whom the band is named, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac evolved from traditional blues to an increasingly pop sound with the release of the band’s bestselling album Rumours, which is listed as the eighth best-selling album in the world, having sold more than 20 million copies. In 1973, Journey formed in San Francisco, originally as an instrumental progressive rock band and went on to become one of the best-selling rock bands in history. Originally made up of former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch, the band’s members have changed over the years, but its popularity remains. At its height, Journey released the album Escape, which produced favorite songs “Who's Cryin' Now,” “Don't Stop Believin’,” and "Open Arms.” Journey’s Greatest Hits album is the 25th best-selling album selling more than 15 million copies.

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what probably steered me toward becoming a pops conductor.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream—no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t tried.”

8 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a major American orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony, and music director of Modesto Symphony—all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops, and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra—we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and creating tributes to American popular music legends like Simon & Garfunkel and Carole King. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia—it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellence in music and the performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynonna Judd, Jason Alexander, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography, and traveling—especially to Italy.

“I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts, and I love Philadelphia…" — MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI

DENISE AND FRANK McNAMARA

Denise and Frank McNamara have been subscribing to the POPS since the late 1980s. Grade school sweethearts, the McNamaras grew up in Mt. Airy and have lived in Flourtown for the last 34 years. They’ll celebrate their 45th anniversary in July. Denise works in the construction industry as a bookkeeper and Frank is in sales. They’re both close to retiring and look forward to spending more time doing their favorite activities: golf, dancing, traveling, and cheering on the grandkids. Their favorite beaches to visit are Negril, Jamaica, and the Jersey shore. “No one enjoys music more than Frank and I,” Denise said. “All types of music…that is one of the reasons that we’re enjoying the POPS so much. Michael Krajewski has been brilliant evolving the POPS program into Baby Boomer favorites with the Great American Songbook, Motown, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Broadway, and beyond.”

FAVORITE SHOWS “I didn’t think it was going to be, however, one of my favorite shows was Sgt. Pepper Celebration,” Denise said. “The POPS just outdid themselves with the arrangements of the Beatles music. Motown and Sinatra were also among my favorites.”

FAMILY PRIDE The McNamaras have three daughters and seven grandchildren, several with musical interest in viola, guitar, percussion and voice. Everyone lives locally, making it easy to attend their musical and sporting events.
