LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT We Wish You The Very Merriest Of Christmases! Welcome to A Philly POPS Christmas! It’s certainly the most wonderful time of the year for us at the POPS. We’re particularly happy that our Music Director, Michael Krajewski, is conducting these holiday shows this season for the first time. And, we’re thrilled to welcome back the talented Tony DeSare, an amazing talent also here for his first set of Christmas performances. I’m sure most of you have heard about the success we had on December 2 with our Third Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders. We again honored 2,000 American heroes, members of the various branches of the Armed Services, the Police and Fire Departments and other service personnel. It was a night to remember—and the perfect way to kick off our Christmas run, infusing all who attended with the spirit of the season. We want to thank all of you for your support of the POPS throughout the year. Certainly, the POPS benefits greatly from your generosity and enthusiasm. We also want to thank the wonderful musicians of the POPS orchestra, our Music Director Michael Krajewski, the members of our Festival Chorus and the POPS staff. All contributed greatly to our best year yet.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I extend to you the warmest of wishes for a magical holiday season!

Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

music director

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what probably steered me toward becoming a pops conductor.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream — no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a major American orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony,

12 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

and music director of Modesto Symphony — all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops, and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra — we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and creating tributes to American popular music legends like Simon & Garfunkel and Carole King. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia — it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellence in music and the performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynonna Judd, Jason Alexander, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography, and traveling — especially to Italy.

“I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts, and I love Philadelphia…" —MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI

vocalist/pianist

TONY DESARE Tony DeSare performs with infectious joy, wry playfulness and robust musicality. Named a Rising Star Male Vocalist in Downbeat magazine, DeSare has lived up to this distinction by winning critical and popular acclaim for his concert performances throughout North America and abroad. From jazz clubs to Carnegie Hall to Las Vegas headlining with Don Rickles and major symphony orchestras, DeSare has brought his fresh take on old-school class around the globe. DeSare has three top ten Billboard jazz albums under his belt and has been featured on the CBS’s The Early Show, NPR, A Prairie Home Companion, the Today Show and his music has been posted by social media celebrity juggernaut, George Takei. Notwithstanding his critically acclaimed turns as a singer/pianist, DeSare is also an accomplished award-winning composer. He not only won first place in the USA Songwriting Contest, but has written the theme song for the motion picture, My Date With Drew, several broadcast commercials and has composed the full soundtrack for the December 2016 film Love Always, Santa. His sound is romantic, swinging and sensual, but what sets DeSare apart is his ability to write original material that sounds fresh and contemporary, yet pays homage to the Great American Songbook. His compositions include a wide-range of romantic, funny, and soulful sounds that can be found on his top-selling recordings. DeSare releases new recordings, videos of standards and new originals every few weeks on his YouTube channel, iTunes and Spotify. Follow Tony on Facebook, Twitter and subscribe on YouTube to stay connected. Tony DeSare is a Yamaha Artist. 14 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

POPS IN SCHOOLS Launched in 2015, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that enhances music education for approximately 1,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia by embedding Philly POPS artists in schools to coach and mentor music students. In a school system that has seen cutbacks in arts programs over the past decade, POPS in Schools provides customized programs, music training and education, performance opportunities, and access to experience professional concerts throughout Philadelphia.
