LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Just over one month ago, we celebrated the most amazing action adventure film composers of all time with a night of Hollywood’s best. Plus, we just played The Met Philadelphia, honoring Danny Elfman’s masterpiece, The Nightmare Before Christmas, for a spectacular Halloween bash! Tonight, we continue our journey through the TOPS of the POPS and travel back in time to the streets of 1969 London, to the most well-known crosswalk in history — an image that would define a generation, and a record that would change music forever. Abbey Road was the final album that the Beatles recorded as a group, and it features some of their greatest hits. But because of the band’s untimely breakup, they never performed any of these iconic pieces live. Our special guest Classical Mystery Tour will take us on a trip through the album, imagining how it sounded when the Beatles recorded these songs 50 years ago. In less than a month, we’ll head back to The Met Philadelphia for a brand-new star-studded holiday experience — A Philly POPS Uptown Christmas. This special holiday show will feature Disney Broadway star Tituss Burgess, Hamilton star Mandy Gonzalez, and Philadelphia-born Latin pop sensation Luis Figueroa in the intimate, stunning beauty of Philly’s grand opera house. Of course, we’ll have our traditional A Philly POPS Christmas right here at the Kimmel Center, featuring Mandy Gonzalez, David Charles Abell, and 300 performers on stage. With these two shows, we truly have a Christmas concert for everyone. Be sure to get your tickets soon; both shows are selling out quickly! And I couldn’t let you go without mentioning the night that means the most to me — Christmas Salute on December 6 — the concert that kicks off the holidays at the Kimmel. We perform free for qualified members of the military, veteran, Police and Fire Department communities each year, celebrating the work of our invaluable first responders. And, it sold out in August this season. With great appreciation for your continued support of all that we do,

In addition to Subscription Series performances at The Kimmel Center, The Philly POPS presents innovative programming with contemporary artists at The Met Philadelphia in The Philly POPS at The Met Philadelphia series. Other ensembles that make up The Philly POPS are: The Philly POPS BIG Band, which plays a rock and rhythm and blues repertoire, and The Philly POPS Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, under the direction of Artistic Director for Jazz, Terell Stafford. CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR Since its initial performance in 1996, Classical Mystery Tour has become the #1 Symphony Pops attraction over the last decade. The group has been performing consistently for over 20 years with more than 100 orchestras in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The group played to packed houses at the Sydney Opera House, and has performed with America’s most prestigious orchestras: The Cleveland Orchestra, The Boston Pops, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, among many others. The four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert. The show presents more than two dozen Beatles tunes performed exactly as they were originally recorded. Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet, enjoy the classical/rock blend on “I Am the Walrus,” and relish the cascading orchestral crescendo on “A Day in the Life.” Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles – from early Beatles music on through the solo years – like you’ve never heard them before. Many have called it “the best show the Beatles never did!” Classical Mystery Tour CDs and T-shirts are available for purchase on their website: classicalmysterytour.com 8 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

ABBEY ROAD AT 50 Even by Beatles standards, Abbey Road has always been an album full of mysteries. How could the world’s most beloved band make their sunniest, warmest, most charming music while they were in the middle of breaking up? How did John, Paul, George and Ringo come together to drop their alltime biggest crowd-pleaser, while gearing up to go their separate ways? The eternal mysteries of Abbey Road only get deeper as you explore the revelatory new Super Deluxe Edition, released on the album’s 50th anniversary. It follows the recent Sgt. Pepper and White Album boxes — and like them, it will transform the way fans hear and argue about this music. Abbey Road has a warmth unlike any of their other music, which is why its popularity never dips. Especially among the young folks — as Giles Martin says, “It’s a kids’ album.” The songs are full of odd role reversals: suddenly Paul is the hard-ass realist singing about money and lawyers, while John and George prefer to sing about how nice sunshine is. Paul’s lush Side Two symphony is a tour de force, but it’s also full of his melancholy that one sweet dream is ending. It’s in his voice when he sings, “Soon we’ll be away from here / Step on the gas and wipe that tear away.” That team spirit is summed up in the cocky bravado of the cover photo — the Fab Four strutting across Abbey Road, knowing how cool they look, transforming an ordinary London street into a legend just because of the eight Beatle feet trotting over the zebra-stripe crosswalk. But you also hear that teamwork in the music. When they slide from “Polythene Pam” into “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window,” that’s not a tape edit — it’s a rock & roll band deep in the pocket. It’s a moment where one and one and one is three. All over Abbey Road, you can hear that collaborative spirit, as all four Beatles come together. And then, signing off with “The End,” they step on the gas and wipe that tear away.
— Excerpted from Rolling Stone “A Deluxe Edition of ‘Abbey Road’ Lets Us Rediscover the Beatles’ Joyous Final Masterpiece” By Rob Sheffield September 26, 2019 14 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT Ten Pennies Florist
Ann Catania opened Ten Pennies Florist with her husband Jerry on May 1, 1980. Today, the shop creates florals and décor for a wide range of clients, including sports teams (The Eagles, The Phillies, The Flyers, and The 76ers), weddings and other family celebrations, private parties, personal occasions, galas, and day-to-day arrangements. In fact, as Creative Designer at Ten Pennies, Ann is the visionary behind the magical POPS Ball held every fall. Ann credits Eagles owner Leonard Tose with putting her on the map. “One day in August of 1980, Leonard’s daughter Susan Spencer Tose walked into Ten Pennies to purchase a $50 bunch of flowers. The next day, their assistant called to ask if we would like to be the florist for the Philadelphia Eagles!,” Ann recalls. “The rest is history.” A self-taught floral designer, Ann’s inspiration comes from her parents. They maintained a beautiful, tasteful home that made Ann think they were wealthy, despite their modest means. Her mother’s motto to her five girls (Ann being the youngest) was: “You can wear a $10 black dress, a strand of pearls, a pair of high heels, with combed hair and lipstick on, and you can go anywhere.” Ann took that mindset into the flower business where she says “When the most inexpensive arrangement is designed properly, it looks fabulous.” Before opening Ten Pennies, she worked at St. Anges Medical Center doing public relations. She served as the chairperson of many galas, including raising money for the St. Agnes Burn Center. Jerry thought she was too talented to work in a hospital and together they created Ten Pennies, which originally started as a gift and small flower shop. Ann is active in many causes, including organizations that address breast cancer, leukemia, and Alzheimer’s.
Today her motto is: “We’d never send anything out that we would not like to receive ourselves.”
18 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
“Our loyal clients have become our friends,” Ann says. “They could spend $5 or $50,000. We treat everybody the same.” It is still her passion to create beauty after all these years.
