A Philly POPS Christmas | December 2017 | 3
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Welcome to A Philly POPS Christmas! Michael Krajewski has outdone himself with this year’s program. We’re thrilled to see Philly native Justin Hopkins back as our guest vocalist. With 300 performers on stage, this is just the biggest show in town! We’ve just enjoyed the Fourth Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders. Once again, we filled the hall with 2,000 American heroes, members of the Armed Services and veterans community, the Police and Fire Departments, and other service personnel. Each year, we honor their commitment by providing free tickets for them and their families. The holidays are a time of giving and this concert is our effort to thank them! POPS in Schools is having a banner season! We have Winter Festivals, featuring POPS musicians and student performers, at all four of our elementary schools. We have some photos from their first weeks of the school year in this book—please take a look! We love to follow their progress through the year and know that you will enjoy seeing them grow as well. Finally, we want to thank KeyBank, our presenting sponsor for this year’s Christmas series. Each year, we add a little something to make these programs more spectacular and KeyBank’s support has made this year’s concerts that much more special.
On behalf of our Board of Directors, I extend to you the warmest of wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

who serve our country, its cities, and communities. Performances including Memorial Salute, POPS on Independence on July 3, POPS in Philadelphia on July 4, and Veterans Salute showcase the magic of the orchestra to diverse and enthusiastic crowds. The annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas concert rings in the holiday season with a free concert for active military, police, and fire department families.
POPS in Schools POPS in Schools, an EITC certified program, enhances music education for approximately 2,000 students in the Philadelphia School District by embedding POPS teaching artists in ten high schools and four elementary schools to train, coach and mentor music students. The Philly POPS is the presenting sponsor of the All-City Jazz Festival held in April at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
Now in its 39th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 150,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from American traditions of music up through today’s chart toppers. The Philly POPS BIG Band, an 18-20 piece ensemble performing a rock and rhythm and blues repertoire, premiered in 2017 to enthusiastic response at the July 4 Welcome America Concert on the Parkway. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances – including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders concert – celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside

A Philly POPS Christmas | December 2017 | 11
He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream – no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony – all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational , pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra – we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia – it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellent music and performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynona Judd, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting and that’s what I ended up doing with my career.” 12 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
Michael lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography and travelling – especially to Italy.
“Many people are interested in a symphony orchestra, but don’t feel like classical music is for them. When we’re playing the music of Frank Sinatra, movie soundtracks, Broadway and Top 40, audiences get a kick out of hearing a full orchestra with highly trained musicians playing songs that they feel is their music.”

CORPORATE SPOTLIGHT KeyBank
At KeyBank, helping clients and communities thrive means going beyond traditional banking activities so we can bring our values to life by fully participating in local communities and encouraging others to do the same. In the greater Philadelphia region, one of the ways we do this is through our support of the arts. By bringing life to the stories of everyday people, art is a powerful way to portray what’s real, what’s important, what’s uncomfortable and what we need to learn. And sometimes, as is the case with The Philly POPS Christmas concerts, art makes us feel joy. This is why KeyBank is a proud sponsor of the 2017 Philly POPS Christmas. POPS IN SCHOOLS Launched in 2015, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that supplements music education for approximately 2,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia through the ten schools that participate in the All-City Jazz Festival and with weekly in-school activities at four underserved elementary schools. In its fourth year as Presenting Sponsor for the All-City Jazz Festival, The Philly POPS provides professional masterclasses and in-school coaching to high school musicians that culminate in the All-City Jazz Festival presented in April at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. POPS in Schools provides customized programs, music training, general music education, performance opportunities, and access to experience professional concerts to students at Delaplaine McDaniel Elementary School, Isaac Sheppard Elementary School, GW Childs Elementary School, and, most recently, Bache-Martin Elementary School.

The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.
