LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, I am happy to point out that spring is right around the corner. And this Best of Broadway program is a breath of fresh air! I met Todd Ellison some years back and, right away, thought he’d be great for the POPS. It’s taken us this long to get lined up with scheduling, but there’s great news. He’s coming back to do the POPS Christmas series this year! Be sure to read all about his amazing Broadway career on page 6. If you haven’t seen next year’s season lineup already, it’s in the center fold for today’s Program Book. Each year, I look at our schedule and think it’s the best one yet. This year is no different. We’ve upgraded the guest artist roster significantly for this, our 40th Anniversary Season. I hope you’ll agree that the best is yet to come—yet right around the corner in next season’s glittering set of performances. Michael Krajewski returns next month for Sinatra & Friends. There’s something about Sinatra and Philly that is just electric, every time out! Michael Andrew and Ashley Brown give a fresh take on Frank’s collaborations with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Liza Minelli and more! Mark your calendars for the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend—Memorial Salute at the Mann is set for 7 PM on May 26. If you don’t go to the shore, and certainly not everyone does, join us for this free, under the stars Salute Series concert. See you soon again at the POPS!

music director

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting and that’s what I ended up doing with my career.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream – no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony – all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational , pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra – we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia – it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellent music and performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynona Judd, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography and travelling – especially to Italy.

Susan and David are new POPS subscribers this season! Newlyweds Susan and David are both big golfers and met through playing golf. They’ve been together for six years and just got married in December. They live in Cherry Hill, New Jersey now, but Susan is from Pittsburgh and David hails from San Diego. Work brought them both to the Philadelphia area. Susan is a professor at Widener University, where she teaches counseling, and also has a small, private practice. David is a West Point grad who spent half of his career in the Army and half with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); he recently retired. When Susan lived in Pittsburgh, she attended pops shows with the symphony there. She came to a Philly POPS Christmas show, enjoyed it, and became a subscriber to Friday night shows in Row D. “We really enjoy Michael Krajewski,” Susan said. “He has such a warm presence and he engages the audience.” Favorite shows: Susan loved The Music of Elton John and POPS Rocks. She’s looking forward to the Broadway show. David’s favorite was A Star Wars Celebration. Hobbies: Susan and David still enjoy golfing and go a few times a week when the weather is nice. They travel together to warm places in the winter to golf. They also like the BYOBs in Collingswood and Haddonfield, and enjoy trying IPAs at craft beer spots.

POPS IN SCHOOLS! POPS in Schools has begun another exciting spring semester providing supplemental music instruction to approximately 2,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia. Philly POPS musicians are embedded in schools to coach and mentor music students.

Our January highlight saw students at Delaplaine McDaniel Elementary attend the first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Assembly for 2018 which focused on woodwinds! Featuring student performances and a POPS Saxophone Quartet, the students learned about the science behind how the instruments produce sound. The musicians in the saxophone quartet, led by Ron Kerber, shared their musical background with the attentive audience. Many of them started playing music when they were the same age as the students in the audience through assemblies just like STEAM. This is a reminder as to the importance of exposing future music leaders and appreciators through these opportunities. Next up: Percussion!

Shining a spotlight on creativity.

The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.
