LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Just when I think things can’t get any better… they always do. Last month’s performances of Uptown Nights featured a sincere, soulful, and overall powerful trio of talented guest artists. Many guests left the hall saying this was one of the best shows they’ve ever seen. And they’re in good company — we’ve been hearing comments like that for every show this season. Today, we welcome the talent of three renowned vocalists, Catherine Russell, Ben Davis, and Lisa Vroman, to celebrate a genius of American musical theater, Cole Porter. And it’s always a pleasure to welcome my friend, our Principal Guest Conductor David Charles Abell, back to Philly! Our free summer Salute Series performances are just around the corner. We’re eager to visit the Mann Center for the Performing Arts for Memorial Salute on May 25. We expect a big turnout from the Festival Chorus and a number of our student choirs, all joining Todd Ellison and the POPS Orchestra. There will be hundreds of voices singing the songs of our nation. Frequent POPS collaborator and Philadelphia Boys Choir alumnus Justin Hopkins is this year’s guest artist. If you’re not headed down the shore, join us! Don’t forget to secure your subscriptions for our 2019–2020 TOPS of the POPS season — you certainly won’t want to miss this celebration of music’s best, including The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Stephen Sondheim, and Frank Sinatra. THE PHILLY POPS The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. The POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert performances and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives. Now in its 40th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 150,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from American traditions of music up through today’s chart-toppers. The Philly POPS BIG Band, an 18-20 piece ensemble performing a rock and rhythm and blues repertoire, premiered in 2017 to enthusiastic response at the July 4 Welcome America Concert on the Parkway. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances — including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders concert — celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside brings POPS music to local communities. The Philly POPS performs as a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and at venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

DAVID CHARLES ABELL Born in North Carolina, Principal Guest Conductor David Charles Abell grew up in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, attending Germantown Friends School through the sixth grade. A gifted musician from a young age, his study of trumpet, viola, piano, and composition eventually led to a concentration on conducting. He attended Yale University, the Juilliard School, and the Conservatoire Américain in France, where he studied under Nadia Boulanger. At age 13, David met Leonard Bernstein while singing in the world premiere of Bernstein’s Mass in Washington, D.C. Ten years later, David assisted his teacher John Mauceri in the tenth anniversary production of Mass, leading to a close association with Bernstein—as both a conducting student and as an editor of Bernstein’s music. David made his debut with The Philly POPS in 2013’s Christmas Spectacular, returning again in 2014 and 2015. He has since conducted Blockbuster Broadway in 2017, Lenny’s Revolution in 2018, and will lead 2019’s A Philly POPS Christmas and 2020’s Sondheim: A 90th Birthday Celebration. In addition to his work with The Philly POPS, David conducts concerts, opera, and theatre performances around the world. He has performed with such distinguished artists as Dame Judi Dench, Dame Emma Thompson, Heather Headley, Idina Menzel, Petula Clark, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, and Matthew Morrison. He has conducted many prominent orchestras, including the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Atlanta and Cincinnati Symphonies, and Boston Pops. David is widely known to TV audiences for the 10th and 25th anniversary Les Misérables concerts, both of which have become PBS fund-raising perennials. In the UK, he has performed many times on television, most notably as conductor of the immensely successful Sondheim 80th birthday Prom and as the conductor for four years of the Olivier Awards, the UK’s equivalent to the Tony Awards. Recently, he made his Zurich Opera debut with Sweeney Todd, starring Sir Bryn Terfel. In 2008, David undertook the monumental task of creating a critical edition of Kiss Me, Kate. It restored Cole Porter’s landmark score to its original 1948 form, correcting errors and annotating the 742-page orchestral score and 344-page piano/vocal score. He has since conducted the show three times, garnering praise from The Guardian: “There can be no conductor in the world with a more intimate understanding of this piece…[the] orchestra is so darn hot it’s practically a fire-risk.” David currently lives in London.

CATHERINE RUSSELL Vocalist Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist/ composer/bandleader and Louis Armstrong’s long-time music director. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist/guitarist/bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. After graduating with honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Catherine embarked upon musical adventures with Carrie Smith, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, and Rosanne Cash, among others, touring the world and appearing on over 200 albums. Her repertoire features a selection of gems from the 1920s through the present; vital interpretations, bursting with soul and humor. With an off-the-beaten-path song selection, sparkling acoustic swing, and a stunning vocal approach, Catherine Russell has joined the ranks of the greatest interpreters and performers of American Popular Song. She’s earned critical praise and spots on the charts for her six solo albums, most recently 2016’s Harlem On My Mind, featuring songs from the Great African American Songbook.

BEN DAVIS A versatile singing actor, Ben Davis was most recently seen in the City Center Encores! production of Irving Berlin’s Call Me Madam. His extensive Broadway career includes the Tony Award-winning musical, Dear Evan Hansen, Mr. Lindquist in A Little Night Music with Elaine Stritch and Bernadette Peters, Javert and Enjolras in Les Miserables, as Trevor Graydon in Thoroughly Modern Millie and “The Preacher” in Violet. He received a Tony Honor and Ovation Award for his work as Marcello in Baz Luhrmann’s production of La Bohème. This fall, he starred in the offBroadway production of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever at the Irish Repertory Theatre. Ben recently toured the country as Captain Von Trapp in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. He starred as Fred/ Petruchio in Kiss Me Kate at London’s Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms and performed opposite Kelli O’Hara and Victor Garber in Kurt Weill’s, Knickerbocker Holiday at Lincoln Center. An active concert artist, Ben performed as a guest soloist at Tanglewood with the Boston Pops, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Caramoor Festival, the RTE Orchestra in Dublin, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, Westchester Philharmonic, and West Virginia Symphony. He also performed at The Hollywood Bowl as Patrick in Mame and again with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Bernstein’s Mass. His television and film credits include a film version of Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge, Papageno in The Magic Flute directed by Kenneth Branagh, Blue Bloods, 30 Rock, and Numb3rs.

LISA VROMAN From Broadway to classics, on stage and in concert, Lisa Vroman has established herself as one of America’s most versatile voices. She starred on Broadway, Los Angeles and San Francisco as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera and garnered theater critics’ awards for her portrayal. Her Broadway debut was in Aspects of Love and she was the first to play both Fantine and Cosette in Les Misérables. Off Broadway and regionally, she has starred as Marian Paroo in The Music Man, Lili Vanessi in Kiss Me Kate, Birdie in Regina, Josephine in HMS Pinafore, Anna 1 in The Seven Deadly Sins, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, and Rosabella in The Most Happy Fella with the New York City Opera. Lisa appeared on PBS as Johanna in Sweeney Todd and Hey! Mr. Producer. She has played Laurey in Oklahoma at the BBC PROMS festival, Anna Leonowens in The King and I, Mary Turner in Of Thee I Sing, and sang and danced opposite Dick Van Dyke as Mary Poppins at the Hollywood Bowl Disney’s 75th. Recent performances have included a multi-city tour of China, Cole Porter’s 1928 La Revue Des Ambassadeurs with L’Opera de Rennes, and playing the role of Maria Callas in Terence McNally’s award winning play, Master Class. This season, Lisa made her debut with the Gewandhaus Orchester in Leipzig and joined award winning American composer Tom Cipullo for the premiere of his new opera Mayo. Ongoing performances include a series of events with Music Unwound and the Kurt Weill Foundation of a Weill/Brecht/Blitzstein Cabaret with Baritone William Sharp, and symphonic performances of Weill on and off Broadway, featuring The Seven Deadly Sins. POPS IN SCHOOLS: JAZZ The Philly POPS launched its innovative POPS in Schools program in June 2015 with the AllCity Jazz Festival. This annual celebration of music features a full slate of activities, including masterclasses led by POPS musicians and performances by the best student jazz musicians in the School District of Philadelphia. The festival culminates in a performance by the All-City Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Terell Stafford, the Director for Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University. Stafford provides valuable insight for the next generation of jazz musicians each year by leading this stellar ensemble. On Tuesday, April 16, the POPS and its partners will hold the Fifth Annual All-City Jazz Festival. This effort has grown into a comprehensive program for over 200 high school students and now includes performances by the Temple University Jazz Band under the direction of Terell Stafford and the University of the Arts “Z” Big Band under the direction of Matt Gallagher, leader of The Philly POPS BIG Band. Throughout the year, high school students have access to POPS dress rehearsals and concerts at the Kimmel Center. This program connects Philly’s best jazz students with the best jazz musicians in the city, many of whom are Temple University and University of the Arts professors.

Daniel K. Fitzpatrick Daniel K. Fitzpatrick, a commercial banking executive with more than 30 years of experience, is President of Citizens Bank Mid-Atlantic Region and Head of National Industry Verticals. He serves on Citizens Financial Group’s (CFG) Executive Leadership Group, the company’s senior leadership team. CFG is headquartered in Providence, R.I. Fitzpatrick, a native of Northeast Philadelphia, is a former chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and serves on its executive committee, its Greater Philadelphia Energy Action Team, and its CEO Council for Growth. As chairman of the CEO Council’s Human Capital Working Group, Fitzpatrick has focused on collaborating with public, private and nonprofit partners to provide workforce development solutions and opportunities to disadvantaged populations. SUBSCRIBER SPOTLIGHT Joan Carter & John Aglialoro
In their 43 years of marriage, Joan Carter and John Aglialoro have raised four children, run several successful, publicly-traded businesses in the medical and fitness fields, served on many boards, and started a foundation. “We’re not the retiring types,” John says. Though they’ve sold most of their business assets, they still own Gym Source, a national distributor of fitness products, and have increased their involvement in causes important to them. Joan says she “keeps waiting for the time when we have more free time.”

In addition to serving on The Philly POPS board, Joan serves as chair of The Abraham Lincoln Foundation of the Union League and the board of FreedomWorks, a grassroots organization devoted to economic freedom. John is a Trustee of the Barnes Foundation and serves on the Board of the Museum of the American Revolution. Together, they started the Foundation for Individual Liberty which primarily supports libertarian causes.
Joan, who is originally from Pittsburgh, was a music major in college. She has performed in musicals with John (who is a South Philly native) – Joan calls this “a prior life.” When Frank Giordano became President and CEO of the POPS, Joan got involved. “He has a way of changing organizations - growing them and making them successful and exciting. We knew the POPS was something that we wanted to be a part of when Frank stepped up to lead the organization.” Joan and John raised their family in Haddonfield, New Jersey and now live in Old City, Philadelphia. They’re Sunday subscribers to the POPS. “We love the POPS,” Joan says. “We subscribe to other Philadelphia institutions that we enjoy. However, I can honestly say that the POPS is one of my most enjoyable days.” Family Matters: After living in other places, all four of their children and most of their eight grandchildren (ages 8-25) now live in the Philadelphia area. They recently returned from a family skiing trip in Deer Valley, Utah. BEHIND THE SCENES Brian Brown, principal tuba
Brian Brown, principal tuba, is enjoying his 13th year with The Philly POPS. He also serves as the director of The Philly POPS Festival Brass. Brian is also principal tuba with the The Delaware Symphony Orchestra and The Stamford Symphony. He is a member of the Westminster Brass and Rowan University Faculty Brass Quintet. As a first call freelance musician, he has performed and recorded with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pennsylvania Ballet, Opera Philadelphia, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and Orchestra 2001. In addition, Brian is the tuba player for NFL Films. He is a member of the faculty of The University of Delaware, The College of New Jersey, and is a Lecturer in the Music Department of Princeton University. He has been guest lecturer at The Curtis Institute and The Eastman School of Music. Brian holds a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from The Juilliard School. His first teacher was David Powers. Brian still calls him every year on the anniversary of his first tuba lesson. His major teachers include Paul Krzywicki, Don Harry, Don Harwood, and Vincent Penzerella. Brian has enjoyed performing with Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Mel Torme, Jack Jones, Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, The Who, and The Moody Blues. As a soloist, Brian has performed with the Delaware Symphony, The College of New Jersey Wind Ensemble, and The Rowan University Wind Ensemble. When Brian is not playing the tuba, he enjoys riding his bicycle great distances.

TOO DARN HOT!
David Charles Abell, Cole Porter, and Kiss Me, Kate Principal Guest Conductor David Charles Abell’s history with Cole Porter’s music stretches back to his time at Yale University and eventually grew into a major project in his career: his Critical Edition of Kiss, Me Kate. Here, he reminisces about his time conducting and studying Porter’s meaningful music. When I was an undergraduate at Yale, I discovered an obscure corner of the University Library called Historical Sound Recordings. It occupied a huge room in that neo-Gothic structure which was filled with old sheet music, gramophones with huge horns, ancient pianos and other curiosities. The Curator was a quiet, knowledgeable fellow named Richard Warren. Richard gently steered me towards the songs of Cole Porter, Yale class of 1913. In an era before all the music in the world was immediately available on small electronic devices, it was a revelation to discover Porter’s songs one by one by playing them on the piano or listening to 78-rpm discs. A world of long-forgotten Yale football songs, gorgeous ballads, and 1920s comedy songs was revealed to me. I imagined myself at Yale (an all-male Yale) 65 years in the past. I tried to picture what that world must have been like: privileged, glamorous, formal and yet deliciously, delightfully, ‘de-lovely.’ I learned about Cole’s character: serious but pleasure-loving and charmingly naughty. His personality is perfectly expressed in his songs, many of which you will hear this evening. I was also asked by the Yale Dramat to be Music Director for the musical Anything Goes, by Cole Porter, ’13. Those of you that have been involved in musicals know that they eat your life! I can’t imagine that I got any academic work done that semester. I was in love with the silly story about wealthy people on an ocean liner, the tap-dancing, and the 1930s-style orchestrations. I was also pretty good at it, so I started to think I might be able to make conducting a career.

My Cole Porter connection came full-circle in 2008, when I was asked to conduct Kiss Me, Kate at the Glimmerglass Festival in upstate New York. I wanted it to sound like it had sounded at its Broadway premiere in 1948, so I did some research about the original orchestrations. They were still available in 2008, but the score and orchestra parts were full of mistakes. I made it my mission to correct every single one. That means I had to go through all five saxophone parts, all five brass parts, the harp, guitar, piano, percussion and strings with a fine-toothed comb. There were hundreds of mistakes! We did a pretty good job with Kate at Glimmerglass, but that was just the beginning. After the production was finished, I went to the Cole Porter Trusts — an impressive suite of law offices in a Sixth Avenue skyscraper — and asked their impressive suite of lawyers to hire me to create a ‘critical edition’ of Kiss Me, Kate. What, they wanted to know, was a critical edition? A meticulously-researched script, score and set of orchestra parts with hundreds of footnotes was my answer. I wanted everyone to be able to perform Kate in its original 1948 form. The Cole Porter Trusts embraced the project with Kiss Me, Kate performance in Paris, enthusiasm (and enough money to let me devote a large conducted by David Charles Abell chunk of my next four years to it). I roped in one of the best musicians I know — my husband Seann Alderking — and together we learned how to properly edit a critical edition. We found the original 1948 Broadway orchestra parts in a dusty publishers’ basement. We spent days in the Columbia University archive of Bella Spewack, the original scriptwriter. We went back to Yale and examined Cole Porter’s papers. Once we had all the ‘sources’ scanned into our computers, we went home to London and started comparing them: Is that really a B-flat in the oboe part? Is this an early version, later replaced, of the ‘Too Darn Hot’ dance routine? Did Porter really change the lyrics when the show left Broadway and toured around the country? (Yup. ‘I’d like to stop for my baby tonight and blow my top with my baby tonight’ became ‘I’d like to stop for my baby tonight and play bebop with my baby tonight.’) At the end of the process, we produced an orchestral score (with footnotes) of 742 pages, a piano/vocal score of 344 pages, and a completely new set of error-free orchestra parts. Well, almost error-free — we have a short errata list which I keep meaning to send to the publisher. Anyone can now perform the show with its original ‘sound.’ My intention with all of this is to show that American musical theater, our unique art-form, deserves the same respect as the music of Beethoven and Bach. All of the major classical music pieces are available in critical editions. I think that all of the great American musicals should be too. POPS in Schools Launched in 2015, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that supplements music education for 3,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia by embedding POPS Musicians and Teaching Artists in schools to cultivate the music leaders of tomorrow with mentorship from the music leaders of today. POPS in Schools provides programming for high school students through the All-City Jazz Festival, held each April during Jazz Appreciation Month and with weekly in-school activities at four elementary schools and one high school.

MARIN MAZZIE 1960-2018 Critically acclaimed performer, three-time Tony Award nominee and inductee into the American Theatre Hall of Fame, Marin Mazzie has been heard in many of the country’s major symphony halls, cabaret and concert venues, and has been seen starring in some of the most memorable musicals on the Broadway stage and London’s West End. Marin starred on Broadway as Anna Leonowens in Lincoln Center’s acclaimed revival of The King of I for which she received the Joan Cullman Award for Extraordinary Creativity at Lincoln Center. Previous to that, Marin starred on Broadway as “Helen Sinclair” in Woody Allen’s Bullets over Broadway Credit: Michael Sharkey for which she received the Outer Critics Circle Award. Marin starred on Broadway in Next to Normal opposite real-life husband, Jason Danieley. She received Tony and Drama Desk nominations and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her performance as Lilli/Katharine in the hit revival of Kiss Me, Kate and later received an Olivier Award nomination when she made her West End debut in the show. Other Broadway credits include: Enron, Monty Python’s Spamalot (also West End), Ragtime (Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics noms.), Passion (Tony nom.), Man of La Mancha, Into the Woods, Big River, and Out of This World, Kismet, and Zorba (all at Encores!). Her Off-Broadway appearances include Terrence McNally’s Fire and Air, the revival of Carrie (Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award nominations) as well as The Vagina Monologues, The Trojan Women: A Love Story, and The World Goes Round (also National Tour). Marin’s extensive concert career spanned the country from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl to around the world in Abu Dhabi and the Czech Republic. She has been seen with the NY Philharmonic in two of its PBS specials: Sondheim: The Birthday Concert and in its Live at Lincoln Center performance of Camelot as Guenevere. Other PBS Great Performances: Passion, My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies, My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs, and Live from Lincoln Center’s Ring Them Bells! A Kander & Ebb Celebration (also with husband Danieley, Chita Rivera, and Joel Grey). Marin and her husband, Jason Danieley, performed their cabaret concerts He Said / She Said, Opposite You, and Broadway & Beyond, among others, at Feinstein’s/54Below, The Cafe Carlyle, Feinstein’s at the Loew’s Regency, Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series, Joe’s Pub, the Cinegrill, and numerous other venues nationally.
