I’ll Be Home For Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION Frank Giordano, President & CEO, The Philly POPS

Brigadier General (Ret’d) Carol Eggert, Senior Vice President, Military and Veteran Affairs at Comcast Festival Fanfare For Christmas Wasson

A Message of Thanks to Those Who Serve... Tonight, I extend to you, on behalf of the Philly POPS family and our Board of Directors, a warm welcome to Verizon Hall for our Fourth Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders. It’s my favorite way to kick off the holiday season of giving, by gathering together to honor these deserving men and women who, each day, make our community safe and secure. A special thank you for the first responders, veterans and their families in the audience tonight: your commitment and your service are an inspiration! We thank Governor Tom Wolf for serving as Honorary Chairman of this evening’s event. Mayor of Philadelphia Jim Kenney, Police Commissioner Richard Ross, Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel and Joseph Brooks, President of Liberty USO of Pennsylvania, all have made significant contributions to tonight’s events and to the other Salute Series events through the year.

INTERMISSION This event marks a third collaboration for this benefit concert between the POPS and Comcast NBCUniversal, our Salute Series Presenting Sponsor. Brigadier General (Ret.) Carol Eggert, a Philly POPS Board Member, has been instrumental in her role as Senior Vice President, Military and Veteran Affairs at Comcast, in making tonight and the entire series through the year meaningful to the 50,000 audience members who enjoy a Salute concert annually. This partnership brought the Independence Week POPS concerts to another huge audience through the telecasts of these events on NBC10 and Telemundo. I would like to recognize the ongoing contribution of the chairman of the Philly POPS Board, Gary Frank, as well as that of both Bank of America and John and Pina Templeton who have supported this Christmas Salute generously and deserve a special thank you.

The Salute Series, an expanding portfolio of programs performed on American holidays, celebrates those who serve our country, its cities, and communities. Performances including Memorial Salute, POPS on Independence on July 3, POPS at the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony and POPS on the Parkway on July 4, and Veterans Salute showcase the magic of the orchestra to diverse and enthusiastic crowds. The annual I’ll Be Home for Christmas concert rings in the holiday season with a free concert for active military, police, and fire department families. A festive benefit concert that rings in the holiday season for 2,000 members of the service community with a night of magical music and generousity of spirit.

Every year, the Philly POPS celebrates the on-sale date for A Philly POPS Christmas with a bike giveaway event for children of members of the military, and Philadelphia police and fire departments. In coordination with Comcast NBCUniversal and a number of private donors, the POPS gave 130 bicycles and helmets to local children.

COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

GREETINGS: It is my honor to join with the Philadelphia POPS to welcome all those gathered for the Fourth Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders benefit concert. Each year during the holiday season, we must reflect upon the unwavering commitment of the military and emergency first responders. The character and courage of these individuals and their families reflect the highest ideals of the commonwealth. Tonight’s event salutes those whose obligations call them elsewhere during the holiday season. Together in camaraderie, and in the spirit of Christmas, we honor all service members for answering the call of duty and the sacrifices they have made. I commend the gifted performers and staff of the Philadelphia POPS for hosting such a moving event, and I am certain this concert will have a tremendous impact on the audience. As Governor, and on behalf of all the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I am pleased to welcome everyone to tonight’s concert. Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable evening.

VIOLA Christmas came a little early for local children tonight: immediately preceding the Fourth Annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders concert, Amazon presented Fire tablets and content cards to children of active duty military, all serving nearby at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. The Philly POPs is grateful to Amazon for the donation and for gifting local children with new devices to support learning and reading. Last year, Amazon pledged to hire 25,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years. This past November, Amazon announced they hired more than 17,500 veterans and military spouses across the United States and expects to hire 10,000 more by 2021.

POPS IN SCHOOLS Launched in 2015, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that supplements music education for approximately 2,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia through the ten schools that participate in the All-City Jazz Festival and with weekly in-school activities at four underserved elementary schools. In its fourth year as Presenting Sponsor for the All-City Jazz Festival, The Philly POPS provides professional masterclasses and in-school coaching to high school musicians that culminate in the All-City Jazz Festival presented in April at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. POPS in Schools provides customized programs, music training, general music education, performance opportunities, and access to experience professional concerts to students at Delaplaine McDaniel Elementary School, Isaac Sheppard Elementary School, GW Childs Elementary School, and, most recently, Bache-Martin Elementary School.

It is the Soldier, not the minister Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician Who has given us the right to vote.
