LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Elton John has been a part of American music for as long as I can remember. He’s generated hit after hit for more years than I can count. I remember the last time Elton John played on the Parkway with the POPS and with Rufus Wainwright — on July 4, 2005. We’ll see Rufus perform with the POPS again — in January. More about that Philadelphia Freedom 2005 concert later in the book. And it’s always great to see Michael Cavanaugh. We were so pleased with his The Music of Billy Joel presentation in 2016 that we brought him back for Elton John! The POPS celebrated Veterans Day vigorously over the past days — at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, at Dilworth Plaza, during the Veterans Day Parade. We love our role as the City’s orchestra of civic celebration and hope that you’ll attend one of our free Salute Series shows in the upcoming year. The I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders annual concert for the members of the armed forces, police and fire fepartments is set for December 1. It’s my favorite event of the year — the way we say thank you to these brave men and women who commit to a life of service so that we can all be safe and secure. Don’t forget to purchase early for Michael Krajewski’s new program for A Philly POPS Christmas. All 300 of our choir members are back to fill the hall with sound. Justin Hopkins, Philly native and familiar to you from the July 3, 2016 POPS on Independence concert, guest stars this year — with a special surprise segment for the entire family. POPS in Schools is off to a great start. We now provide supplemental music education in four School District of Philadelphia elementary schools: Delaplaine McDaniel in Point Breeze, Isaac Sheppard in Kensington, Childs Elementary in South Philadelphia and Bache-Martin in North Philly. We’re pleased to enter into our fourth year of partnership with the District. Take a look in tonight’s program book for some great photos of the students getting back to school with music! See you at the POPS! With great appreciation,

ABOUT SIR ELTON JOHN Elton John owns a five-decade career with over 300 million records sold and thirty Rufus Wainwright also performed at this meaningful July 4 show. In 2004, Elton John called Rufus “the greatest songwriter on the planet at the moment.” They collaborated on Elton’s Songs from the West Coast album. At the 2005 show in Philly, Rufus wore a teal bracelet given to him by the Keystone Hospice in Wyndmoor which cared for HIV/AIDS patients.
albums recorded. He has charted more than fifty Top 40 hits with at least one song on the Billboard Top 100 for 31 straight years from 1970-2000. While his ode to Princess Diana, 1997’s reworking of Candle in the Wind, may have been top seller with over 33 million copies sold worldwide, Philadelphia Freedom, penned for Billie Jean King’s culturally resonant Philadelphia-based tennis team, is perhaps the one that comes to mind for most Philadelphians. That title has a particularly Philadelphia story.
The Philly POPS and Sir Elton John share a special honor: performing on Independence Day in Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation. The Philly POPS performed at the first July 4 concert in 1993 and have been part of many Welcome America celebrations since then. In 2005, Elton John delighted Philadelphians by headlining the Philadelphia Freedom Concert to cap that year’s Independence Week celebration. Even better: The Philly POPS orchestra performed on-stage with Elton John at that show!
Rufus himself returns to Philadelphia on January 19, 2018 to perform a one-night-only show with The Philly POPS. Tickets are on sale now: www.phillypops.org/Rufus
The concert and a related fundraising event sought to raise money for HIV/AIDS education and treatment causes, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation and a regional organization. Wainwright’s 2018 concert with the POPS will benefit local non-profit William Way.
Mark Segal, publisher of Philadelphia Gay News and concert organizer of the July 4, 2005 Philadelphia Freedom Concert on the Parkway recalls: “We began adding new acts to the line-up, which now consisted of Sir Elton John, Patti LaBelle, Bryan Adams, and then we were delighted that Elton brought Rufus Wainwright on board… We now had our orchestra with The Philly POPS, our legendary ensemble made up of musicians who played orchestral versions of a variety of musical genres. PGN has been a proud partner of the POPS ever since.”
Elton John, with the POPS, performed many of the songs you’ll hear in today’s show, including “Rocket Man,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Tiny Dancer.” 6 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
Earlier in the concert, the POPS even played the overture to Star Wars – which many in our audience heard last month during our concert series dedicated to the films.
The POPS is proud to again be part of Wawa Welcome America’s events and the July 4 Parkway concert. In addition to the traditional July 3 show at Independence Hall, the new Philly POPS BIG Band debuted on July 4, 2017 led by Matt Gallagher and featuring singers Mandy Gonzalez, Luis Figueroa, and Tony DeSare. He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream – no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony – all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational , pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra – we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter.

“Many people are interested in a symphony orchestra, but don’t feel like classical music is for them.
