LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, We are thrilled to announce that our 35th Anniversary Season Sponsor is Parx Casino — the #1 casino in Pennsylvania. Parx Casino exemplifies all that is best in corporate citizenship. They understand the importance of quality cultural programming and its role in strengthening the bonds within a community. Thanks to their generous social investment and philanthropy, many of our area’s most treasured traditions have bright futures. It is with great pride that we welcome Parx Casino as our 35th Anniversary Season Sponsor! Joining the Philly POPS as guest conductor is the sensational David Charles Abell from London, England, one of the world’s most admired maestros who spent some of his formative years in Philadelphia. Special guest and Metropolitan Opera star Angela Brown is a breathtaking soprano known for her sheer vocal power and luxurious finesse, all wrapped in a captivating, larger than life personality. You will thrill to the glorious sounds of the Philadelphia Boys Choir and the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas Gospel Choir. Celebrated organist Peter Richard Conte will be at the helm of the country’s largest concert hall organ, and, of course, our very own POPS Festival Chorus will delight and amaze you with their exhilarating vocal renditions of your favorite holiday songs. And yet another treat is in store for you at four of our concerts this season, as the Philly POPS and B101 Christmas Choir Competition School champions perform for you live on stage! B101 is a wonderful partner, and we share their commitment to arts in the schools. The perfect Christmas gift awaits you in the lobby — it’s “Philly-Opoly,” Philadelphia’s very own version of the famous Monopoly real estate game! Not only is it fun to play, but it also benefits a good cause: A portion of the proceeds from every game sold will go towards the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s new ambulatory care center, the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, slated to open in 2015. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year, and this is the perfect time to thank you all for making this season such a spectacular success for your Philly POPS. From our first ever POPS Ball to the Christmas Spectacular, your enthusiastic support and generosity inspires us. I would like to personally thank our POPS musicians and Music Director Michael Krajewski for their talented generosity, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their steadfast commitment to keeping our arts community vibrant and healthy. I would also like to thank a longtime friend and supporter of the Philly POPS, Robert H. Rosen, for his most generous personal contribution. Mr. Rosen’s gift is dedicated to maintaining the high orchestral standards of the POPS and the continued growth of our audience. You, too, are welcome to join Mr. Rosen, the Parx Casino, and many others in demonstrating your support for this wonderfully unique institution. Become an official “Friend of the POPS” through your donation — inside your program book is an envelope and details on how you can contribute and participate. So here we are, with our families and our friends for the most wonderful of Christmas traditions, the Philly POPS Christmas Spectacular. Through the years, we hope you will keep the memory of tonight’s performance in your heart, and, on behalf of everyone at the Philly POPS, have a wonderful Christmas holiday and a Happy New Year!

Best Regards,

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI, music director

Known for his entertaining programs and clever humor, Michael Krajewski took the helm as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS® with the beginning of The POPS’ 35th season in October 2013. He is a much sought after conductor of symphonic pops, and takes on his Philadelphia post while serving as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, and around the globe. In the summer of 2012, he was guest conductor with The Philadelphia Orchestra at The Mann Center. He has conducted the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston and Cincinnati Pops, the San Francisco, Baltimore, Detroit, Indianapolis, Seattle, Dallas, St. Louis and National Symphonies, and numerous other orchestras across

As he joins The Philly POPS, Michael Krajewski is eager to bring his sense of the unexpected and theatricality to the audiences of Philadelphia. “I think I have good instincts of what will work with Pops orchestras,” he explained recently. “I enjoy finding artists who aren’t playing with symphonies and working with them to develop programs that would be welcomed by the Pops audience. I seek them out and make new collaborations. It’s the creative process that I value most, cultivating new works for Pops audiences — like when I encouraged James Stephenson to compose the ‘Concerto for Cell Phone,’ which we’ll be doing in Philadelphia during the April concert series.” Music has always been important to Michael Krajewski. He grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, and discovered he was fascinated and energized by the open-air orchestral music played in the summertime by the nearby Detroit Symphony. “That huge sound coming from the stage hit me

As a music education major at Wayne State University in Detroit, Krajewski assumed he found a career path where he could fully devote himself to music. Yet when he became a music teacher, he quickly felt he had not reached his full potential as a musician. In a life-changing moment of clarity, he applied to the graduate program in conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. As Krajewski furthered his training at the Pierre Monteux Domaine School for Conductors, his gifts were recognized. He became a Dorati Fellowship Conductor with the Detroit Symphony and later served as that orchestra’s assistant conductor. “I was conducting the very same orchestra I adored as a child,” he explained. “It was thrilling. I also learned a lesson that has been an important guide throughout my professional life: If you really want something, go for it.” Krajewski never expected to be conducting the highly respected Philly POPS, but he’s thrilled he “went for it.” He looks forward to many years in Philadelphia, a city he is appreciating more with each visit. Michael Krajewski lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Darcy. When not conducting, he enjoys travel, photography and solving crossword puzzles.

THE ROBERT H. ROSEN MARKETING INITIATIVE: A COMMITMENT OF $50,000 Dear Friends, For over 20 years, my family, friends and I have reveled in the excitement of wonderful concerts and fun times. I love our new Philly POPS! Let’s keep the music coming! Recently, I asked the Philly POPS what we could do together to keep the quality of our orchestra strong and to expand our audience for the future. We decided to create a campaign for the POPS – one that will use existing marketing activities, including a subscription campaign, telemarketing, direct mail, traditional advertising, e-mail communications and social media. I ask you to join me in this exciting venture by helping to raise at least another $100,000 in contributions for this project. Our success will guarantee that future generations of concert goers

"Let's keep the music coming!"

will continue to enjoy the gift of the Philly POPS. Thank you.

Robert H. Rosen

For more information on The Robert H. Rosen Marketing Initiative, please contact Larry Simpson, Director of Development, The Philly POPS, at lsimpson@phillypops.org or 215-735-2841.

SING-A-LONG

JINGLE BELLS

O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL

Dashing through the snow

O come, all ye faithful, joy—ful and triumphant

In a one-horse open sleigh

O come ye O come ye to Bethlehem;

O'er the fields we go

come and behold him born the King of angels;

Laughing all the way.

O, come let us adore him, O come let us adore him

Bells on bobtail ring

O, come let us adore him, Christ the lord.

Making spirits bright. What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight!

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh! what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way; Oh! what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.
