Leslie Odom Jr. Celebrating the POPS 40th Anniversary | September 2018 | 3
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Welcome to the inaugural show of our 40th Anniversary Season! We couldn’t be any more excited to have you here for tonight’s first celebratory performance. It’s simply the first of a number of concerts dedicated to the POPS’ dazzling history and to the Philly-connected artists and musicians who have made popular music such a vibrant part of our lives. As the brightest star in the Philly firmament today, Leslie Odom, Jr. is the perfect choice to kick off our 40th Anniversary celebration. Supporting Leslie through the weekend are his School District of Philadelphia alma maters, Masterman and CAPA, both now part of the POPS in Schools program, and the choir of Canaan Baptist Church in Germantown, where Leslie sang his first solos. What a way to round out this Philadelphia homecoming! In addition to our subscription line-up, we’re looking forward to another acclaimed Tony and Grammy Award Winner next month — Heather Headley for The Philly POPS Presents: Heather Headley’s Broadway My Way, which will also feature Broadway legend, Philly-native, LaSalle College High School and Temple University graduate, Hugh Panaro. I can’t help but reflect on the magnificent season that lies before us. In addition, our school programs are off to a vigorous start — POPS in Schools now serves 15 school district locations with a variety of tailored, supplemental music education experiences. And, people are already signing up by the hundreds for our annual free Christmas Salute Concert, set to benefit first responders with a POPS-style holiday kick-off. As always, I’m looking forward to this momentous season and all the joy it will bring. I hope to see you at the POPS even more often this sparkling anniversary season! With great appreciation,
Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Friends, As the Chairman of the Board for the 2018-2019 season, and on behalf of The Philly POPS, I welcome you to this brilliant, engaging new POPS season. I am excited for the journey of this season, and I’m certain that this 40th Anniversary Season will be memorable for all. The POPS serves a very important place in the Philadelphia community, as its 40-year pedigree can attest. Through its 40 years, the POPS has grown substantially in all respects, and each year the POPS reaches a higher level. I hear people say that just when they thought the POPS couldn’t get any better, it does. We are, first and foremost, the best show in town! But the POPS is so much more than entertainment. Through POPS in Schools, we supplement music education in 15 Philadelphia School District schools — raising the music leaders of tomorrow, today. The POPS is the partner of civic celebration with the City of Philadelphia through the Salute Series — providing music for important civic events such as Independence Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day. Each December, the POPS presents Christmas Salute, a free concert for members of the military and veterans communities, the Police and Fire Departments and other deserving first responders. Additionally, the POPS is a leader in community entertainment, bringing free POPS Outside concerts to parks and other outdoor venues across the city. All this growth and engagement would not have been possible were it not for the efforts of President and CEO, Frank Giordano. Frank has revitalized the POPS in a way that no one else could have. He has infused the organization with his energy and pursuit of excellence, and it shows in every way. We are so very grateful for Frank’s commitment to the future of the POPS. Just as Frank pushed the organization to new heights, Maestro Michael Krajewski pushed the orchestra to realize its full potential. Krajewski has been a transformative force in the orchestra, and he has brought it to a world-class status. With such a bright future ahead, I am honored to lead the Board of Directors to bring the POPS to new heights. See you at the POPS!

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what I ended up doing with my career.” 8 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream — no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony — all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra — we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia — it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellent music and performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynona Judd, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography and traveling — especially to Italy.
“Many people are interested in a symphony orchestra, but don’t feel like classical music is for them. When we’re playing the music of Frank Sinatra, movie soundtracks, Broadway and Top 40, audiences get a kick out of hearing a full orchestra with highly trained musicians playing songs that they feel is their music.” - MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Leslie Odom Jr. Celebrating the POPS 40th Anniversary | September 2018 | 9

THE PHILLY POPS TURNS 40! The 2018-2019 Season marks the 40th Anniversary of The Philly POPS! Step back in time to the 1979 beginning... The Philly POPS debuted on November 25th, 1979 with a Gershwin-themed show at the Academy of Music. The show sold out and the Inquirer’s Samuel Singer wrote, “The POPS is tops … Philadelphia has a Pops symphony at long last.” In May 1980, Philadelphia Magazine wrote, “Can a town with an internationally renowned symphony, several excellent smaller ensembles and more chamber groups than there are chambers in which to perform, support yet another orchestra?” “Moe Septee insists the answer is yes.” POPS Founder Impresario Moe Septee
Septee was an energetic concert promoter who managed the All-Star Forum. According to Philly Mag, he formed The Philly POPS after the Boston Pops turned down an offer to perform at the Academy of Music, preferring a larger venue like the Spectrum. “Septee was aghast. A symphony orchestra in a sports-rock arena! ... Septee had decided that anything Boston did, Philly could do as well or better.” And after the success of its first concert, Septee knew that the POPS would become a Philadelphia institution.
In 2018 and 2019, we’re celebrating the 40 year history of the POPS! During each program, we’ll play a tune or arrangement that relates to the history and legacy of our organization and the musical genre of POP. We’ll also continue with our ongoing effort to showcase artists and music with Philly roots — starting with today’s show that features Philly’s own Leslie Odom, Jr.!

We’ve also invited local students from our POPS in Schools programs to join in the music-making fun!

LESLIE’S PHILADELPHIA “Philly gave me everything in those formative years,” Leslie Odom, Jr. said. “It gave me my taste, my eyes, my ears, what I think is good, what I think is great, art — I got that from the streets of Philadelphia.” East Oak Lane Leslie grew up in the East Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Canaan Baptist Church At Canaan Baptist Church, known as the Gem of Germantown, Leslie sang solos in the church choir while growing up and when he returned home during college breaks. Of his Canaan experience, he told the Inquirer: “I always felt that I was seen in my community,” he said. Masterman Leslie’s interest in performing developed during his Middle School years at Philadelphia’s renowned Julia R. Masterman School. According to Philly Style Magazine, his coach, Frances Turner, identified a gift for speechwriting which led him to deliver numerous presentations on the floor of City Council and the Pennsylvania state capitol.
“These artists [The Philly POPS] are the crème de la crème; professional musicians with their own sound and their own thing going on, their own style.” - LESLIE ODOM, JR. ICON MAGAZINE INTERVIEW

Freedom Theatre Leslie’s talent for speechwriting and presentation gave him the confidence to explore drama at Freedom Theatre, which, according to the New York Times, is Pennsylvania’s oldest African-American theatrical institution. He said: “Freedom Theater was where it all began for me. Freedom is the foundation of all of my formative training and I am grateful for that every single day... I walked out of the doors at Freedom a better version of myself than when I entered. Couldn’t have asked for more.”
CAPA Leslie attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). Already a star in high school, he played the leading role of Birdie in CAPA’s production of Bye Bye Birdie in 1997. PHILADANCO! Leslie trained in dance with PHILADANCO!, a fellow resident company of the Kimmel Center, that is known for its innovative choreography, blending African American-based dance with ballet, jazz, and modern.
“If I’m making Philadelphia proud, if I making art that Philadelphia deems quality, then I know I’m on the right track.” Leslie receiving honors from the City of Philadelphia with Philadanco founder Joan Myers Brown, City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, Beverly Harper, president emerita, Philadanco, state Rep. Dwight Evans, and Sandra Haughton, executive producer, New Freedom Theatre. credit: The Philadelphia Tribune Media company

DR. D. WALTER COHEN 1926 - 2018 Dr. D. Walter Cohen was involved with The Philly POPS since its 1979 founding, eventually becoming Chairman of the Board. He served as Chairman Emeritus until his passing at age 91 in June 2018. An admired philanthropist, dentist, teacher, and colleague, Dr. Cohen was dean emeritus of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, chancellor emeritus of the Drexel University College of Medicine, and a former president and chancellor of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He received the French government’s Legion of Merit, received eight honorary doctorates, and was a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Cohen was also chair of the Pennsylvania Diabetes Academy, president of the National Museum of American Jewish History, and served on many other educational and non-profit boards. As the organization approached its 40th anniversary, Dr. Cohen shared his favorite memories of the POPS: “We began to recognize people who made significant contributions in the field. I remember the event for John Glenn, the astronaut, which was a very, very significant event.” “The July 4 program in front of Independence Hall became a standby. That happened in the first summer of 1980; [since then] the POPS has been an important part of Philadelphia’s cultural scene.” Join the POPS on October 6 at the Trenton War Memorial for the annual benefit concert in support of Morris Hall and St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center. Cohen’s daughter Jane Millner, Director of Community Relations and Development, organizes the event. SUBSCRIBER SPOTLIGHT John and Palma Daly Shortly after John and Palma Daly started dating about seven years ago, they became POPS subscribers. They’ve now been married for four years and consider POPS shows a highlight of their life together. Palma is originally from outside of Atlanta, Georgia and John is from Mount Airy. They have three homes: Gladwyne, Wilmington, and Naples, Florida in the winter. Both have lived in cities all over the country, but according to John, Philadelphia is the best place because it has wonderful arts, sports, universities, friends and colleagues. John and Palma have 8 children and 11 grandchildren. Palma is an interior designer and enjoys gardening. John is a surgical oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center and was previously the Dean of Temple University’s medical school. At the POPS, the Dalys sit about five rows from the stage on Friday nights. As Union League members, they often have dinner there before POPS shows. They especially loved the recent Broadway, Elvis, Beatles, and Star Wars shows and are looking forward to this weekend’s Leslie Odom show. “We always go away happy and singing the songs on the way home,” Palma said. They both love shows featuring the Festival Chorus, too. “The combination of voices and music is spectacular,” John said. The Dalys love to travel, especially to Italy, and they visited national parks in Wyoming and Montana this summer. Why they subscribe: “A subscription offers the opportunity to become familiar with the conductor and musicians by their expressions and movement,” John said. Favorite moment: Palma especially loved seeing Michael and Rachael Ludwig get married on stage in 2015.

Shining a spotlight on creativity.
The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.
