A Star Wars Celebration | October 2017 | 3
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, It always feels too long between the presentation of our final Subscription Series concert of each season in May and the premiere of the next season in October. This fall, I’m excited that it’s A Star Wars Celebration. 2017 marks the fortieth anniversary of the first Star Wars film, of course. The winners of our Star Wars Family Photo Competition span three generations—and I’m getting set to take my granddaughters to see The Last Jedi coming to area theaters at Christmas time. There is a piece featured from each of the seven Star Wars films tonight. In addition, we have all five of Williams’ Academy Award winning scores represented in the program. An amazing tribute to this incredibly prolific talent.
CONCERT PROGRAM Main Title Williams Harry’s Wondrous World Williams Theme from Jaws Williams Flying Theme from E.T.: The Extraterrestrial Williams Theme from Schindler’s List
This season, we have such a magical variety of American song. From Bernstein and Sinatra to the music of Elton John and the Rolling Stones with a quick stop in January to present Rufus Wainwright’s new show, every decade is covered. And don’t forget to purchase early for Michael Krajewski’s new program for A Philly POPS Christmas. Local talent Justin Hopkins is our holiday guest artist.

Since we last performed at the Kimmel, we presented Salute Series programs at the Mann Center for Memorial Day and on Independence Mall and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for Independence Week. These free concerts of civic celebration extended our audience to another 100,000 POPS fans. NBC10 and Telemundo62 televised much of the July 3 and 4 show for the first time. We’re already two thirds full for the I’ll Be Home for Christmas Salute show on December 1. What better way to kick off the holiday season than to host 2000 members of the military, the Police and Fire Departments and their families, thanking them for their service? Take a look at our website for the photos of these incredible Salute events: phillypops.org/SALUTE

Enjoy the upcoming season—I always think each year is the very best one ever. See you at the POPS!

A Star Wars Celebration | October 2017 | 5
LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Friends, It is with great enthusiasm and humble pride that I’ve accepted the new role as Chairman of the Board for the 2017-2018 season. I’ve been intrigued by the POPS for quite some time—not only as a subscriber and great fan, but also serving as Vice Chairman of the Board for the past five years. What a magnificent journey, with the Philly POPS now at its most exciting juncture in history, as the nation’s largest stand-along POPS orchestra. Our CEO, Frank Giordano, has infused the entire organization with an unmatched energy and tireless pursuit of continued excellence. Our Maestro Michael Krajewski has built a roster of impressive programs while assembling a supremely talented and committed orchestra playing to packed houses at the Kimmel Center and overflowing concerts outside the hall. In September, we announced the appointment of David Charles Abell as Principal Guest Conductor. David spent his childhood in Philadelphia, attending Germantown Friends. He has built a faithful audience here conducting the Christmas series for three consecutive years and Blockbuster Broadway last season. He’s a natural for our upcoming Bernstein program—he sang in the first Mass at the Kennedy Center in a boys choir, he worked with Bernstein as a Yale student, and he conducted the Mass in Berlin as a 23-year-old with Bernstein’s blessing. It will be thrilling to watch David and our beloved POPS working together for seasons to come, and I congratulate David on this enhanced role. I am overwhelmingly compelled by the POPS engagement programs, particularly POPS in Schools. We have witnessed dramatic cutbacks in arts education throughout all communities, and quite dramatically in the School District of Philadelphia. The POPS now proudly supplements music education in 15 PSD schools—11 high schools and four elementary schools. Music is a powerful and irreplaceable cultural force, unifying us together as a community in celebration. We strive for the next generation to have continued exposure and access to the POPS, to the Kimmel Center, and to all the civic occasions in which the POPS partners with City of Philadelphia. We deeply believe that all PSD students should have continued enhanced access to the kind of musical training and performance skills that will contribute to their maturation, personal and professional growth, and connection to the life of our city and our collective future. The POPS has a brilliant path forward, and I am honored to lead our Board of Directors on this journey.
PHILLY LOVES STAR WARS It’s been 40 years since the first Star Wars movie was released — and what memorable scores John Williams created for the series! The Philly POPS thanks you for celebrating this milestone with us. We know that Philly loves Star Wars, so we asked local families to send in photos of themselves in costume to win tickets to this show. The submissions were creative, cute, and impressive!
See you at the POPS!
Gary A. Frank, Chairman of the Board Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS A Star Wars Celebration | October 2017 | 7
He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream – no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony – all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational , pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra – we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter.

with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynona Judd, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography and travelling – especially to Italy.
“Many people are interested in a symphony orchestra, but don’t feel like classical music is for them. When we’re playing the music of Frank Sinatra, movie soundtracks, Broadway and Top 40, audiences get a kick out of hearing a full orchestra with highly trained musicians playing songs that they feel is their music.” - MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI A Star Wars Celebration | October 2017 | 9
