POPS ROCKS! Storm Large, A Crazy Kind Of Love | November 2018 | 3
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, I cannot overstate the beauty, passion and virtuosity we’ve seen so far this season. Leslie Odom, Jr. and Heather Headley kicked off our 40th Anniversary Season in style, and everyone was simply astounded by their musicianship. With many saying that these two concerts were the best they’ve ever seen at the POPS, tonight’s show has high expectations — and we think you’ll find Storm Large is up to the challenge. Like Leslie Odom, Jr., Storm Large is a truly unforgettable interpreter of American pop music. But unlike Leslie, Storm’s bold power and classic-rock roots create her trademark sizzling approach to the classics. But of all the things we do each year, I’m perhaps most proud of the Salute Series. This year’s Christmas Salute not only honors the veteran and service communities with a concert dedicated to their sacrifice, but we also have two special recognitions on tap. First, we recognize the service and bravery of fallen fireman, Captain Matthew LeTourneau. In his honor, the POPS has invited his friends and family to celebrate his memory. Secondly, we will recognize New Jersey Assemblyman and Navy SEAL Ryan Peters with the inaugural Salute Service Award for his decades of leadership as Lieutenant Commander Navy Seal and for his dedication to the service of New Jersey. Please consider supporting our efforts to create this amazing holiday kick-off for those who have given so much to our nation and our community. To support this wonderful night, visit phillypops.org/christmassalute2018. And speaking of the most wonderful time of the year, the festivities are right around the corner! In a few short weeks, A Philly POPS Christmas will deck the halls of the Kimmel. This year’s guest artist, Hamiton star Mandy Gonzalez, will also be headlining the 6ABC Thanksgiving Day Parade! Be sure to tune in for a Thanksgiving performance you won’t forget and be sure to make your POPS plans early! With great appreciation,
Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS

in memoriam
GERRY LENFEST 1926 — 2018 Philanthropist H. F. “Gerry” Lenfest came to Philadelphia in 1965 to join Walter Annenberg's Triangle Publications, Inc., publisher of Seventeen magazine and owner of cable television companies. In 1974, he formed Lenfest Communications, Inc., which grew to become one of the top cable television companies, with over 1.2 million subscribers. He and his wife, Marguerite, founded The Lenfest Foundation in 2000. The Lenfests donated over $1 billion to more than 1,000 organizations, including The Philly POPS. Fifteen years ago, they launched Love the Arts, which provides year-round advertising and promotion for more than a dozen local arts organizations via television, billboards, radio, social media, and online marketing. No other city in America has a program that supports the Arts in this manner. Lenfest passed away on August 5, 2018 at age 88.
“While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Gerry, we are also eternally grateful. His and Marguerite's support helped make the POPS what it is today, and for that, everyone at POPS thanks Gerry from the bottom of our hearts.” - Frank Giordano, President and CEO of The Philly POPS 6 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

music director
MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting, and that’s what I ended up doing with my career.” 8 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream — no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony — all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational, pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra — we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia — it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellent music and performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynona Judd, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography and traveling — especially to Italy.
“Many people are interested in a symphony orchestra, but don’t feel like classical music is for them. When we’re playing the music of Frank Sinatra, movie soundtracks, Broadway and Top 40, audiences get a kick out of hearing a full orchestra with highly trained musicians playing songs that they feel is their music.” - MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI POPS ROCKS! guest artist
STORM LARGE Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Highlights of the 17-18 season include debuts with the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Vancouver, Jacksonville, and RTÉ National Symphonies, as well as return engagements with the Houston, Toronto, and Toledo Symphonies. Storm and her band, Le Bonheur, continue to tour concert halls across the country. The 16-17 season included debuts with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and BBC Symphony Orchestras, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, as well as return engagements with National Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Recent highlights include engagements with the New York Pops, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Memphis Symphony, and the Knights, as well as performances at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. She joined Michael Feinstein as special guest on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Popular Song series, as well as with Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, and the Pasadena Pops. She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold out performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of the Spring for Music festival. The New York Times called her “sensational,” and the classical music world instantly had a new star. Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she was featured on their CD, Get Happy. Storm’s autobiographical musical memoir, Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-week sold out run at Portland Center Stage. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the show to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia, and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012, named Oprah’s Book of the Week, and awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction.

POP QUESTIONS Q&A with Storm Large Where did you grow up? Southboro, Massachusetts
How did you become interested in making music? Loneliness.
Who were your favorite musicians as a kid? Beatles, Miriam Makeba, John Denver, The Clash, Public Enemy, Nina Hagen, Sex Pistols, Bad Brains... too many to name.
What was your first paying music gig? Wait.... You can get paid to play music?
What was your big break? Pinkie toe when I was 16. Real answer: Pretty much any time you perform in front of people for the first time and they want to see you again, is a break. Big ones come and go just like the little ones, you need them all and they have to be continuous throughout a career. I've been on TV, but I wouldn't have had I not played a 200-seat theater in Portland. I play big and small theaters, tiny rock and jazz clubs still, after 25 years of doing this. I've received standing ovations at Carnegie Hall, and I'm not really famous. You never "MAKE IT" — you just keep making. Thank God.
We know that you’re an animal lover. Tell us more about your favorite animals and how you grew to love them? Yes. Dogs, cats, squirrels, birds, snakes ... my childhood dream was to be a werewolf so I would have a legitimate reason to live outside and avoid humans.
Where do you live now? Portland, Oregon.
You’ve traveled all over to perform. What’s your favorite place in the world? I have several: Portland, Reykjavik, Barcelona, Paris, Budapest, NYC, and Louisville, Kentucky.
12 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
Have you been to Philly before? Some of my happiest memories are from Philly. My grandparents lived in Spring House and Bluebell. My uncle and cousins were in Ambler and Bucks County. I feel very much at home there.
Have you tried a cheesesteak yet? Cheesesteak, scrapple, anything from Wawa...
Do you have a favorite: Song to listen to? Presently "Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters.
Song to sing? Presently "The Story" Brandi Carlisle.
Musician or Band? Presently Regina Spektor.
Movie? Pretty much any Mel Brooks or Monty Python.
Color? Crimson red.
Instrument? Heart strings.
Do you have any non-music hobbies? Cage fighting and exaggerating.
What do you like about performing with orchestras? It's like surfing on champagne.
Where are you excited about performing next? Feinstein's/54 Below in NYC December 3 and 7.

Internationally, this network has evolved into the Girls Rock Camp Alliance. Shining a spotlight on creativity.
The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.
