A Philly POPS Christmas | December 2018 | 3

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, presenting sponsor

Welcome to the most spectacular presentation of A Philly POPS Christmas to date! Each year we welcome more than 20,000 people to Philly’s favorite holiday tradition. This year we’ve put together a performance so marvelous, that it slots perfectly into the intersection of our 40th Anniversary Season and this “most wonderful time of the year.” First and foremost, I cannot say enough about tonight’s talent. Mandy Gonzalez is a singer and performer unlike any other. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has gone as far as to call her “one of the greatest singers on earth.” Expect to hear unforgettable renditions of your favorite Christmas tunes like you’ve never heard them before. Conducting this luminescent performer and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra is the incredible Todd Ellison, music director-designate of The Philly POPS. With myriad Broadway credits under his belt, Todd has rightfully earned the title from The New York Times as “one of Broadway’s electric conductors.” Finally, after accounting for the amazing talents of The Philly POPS Festival Chorus, the award-winning Philadelphia Boys Choir, the celebrated African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas Gospel Choir, and renowned organist Peter Richard Conte, we will have more than 300 performers on stage welcoming the Christmas season, Philly POPS style! It’s Winter Festival time at our POPS in Schools partner locations. POPS in Schools serves 15 school district locations with tailored supplemental music education experiences, designed to help raise the music leaders of tomorrow. Beyond all of this first-class programming, we will also have students from POPS in Schools perform as pre-concert entertainment before one of our shows. They’re joining our annual MORE FM school choir competition winners in making the concert experience that much more magical. Finally, we want to thank our presenting sponsor KeyBank for this year’s Christmas series. KeyBank’s support helps us to not only keep this Philly tradition alive, but it has helped it grow to new heights each and every year.

From the POPS family to yours, we wish you a wonderful holiday season! With great appreciation,

Frank Giordano, President and CEO Encore Series, Inc., The Philly POPS 4 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

SPOTLIGHT The Philly POPS Today

Thanks to its passionate supporters, The Philly POPS is generating significant growth in ticket sales and attendance, with particular growth in the POPS subscription base. These advances are the driving force behind innovative programming for new audiences, meaningful work that benefits local communities, and a new slate of in-school education programs. The Philly POPS is breaking out of the concert hall and bringing music to the streets of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns. Look for POPS artists performing in pop-up beer gardens, city parks, leisure venues, public schools, and alongside some of the greatest vocalists of our time.

THE PHILLY POPS The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. The POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert performances and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives. Now in its 40th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 200,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from American traditions of music up through today’s chart-toppers. The Philly POPS BIG Band, an 18-20 piece ensemble performing a rock and rhythm and blues repertoire, premiered in 2017 to enthusiastic response at the 4th of July Welcome America Concert on the Parkway. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances — including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders concert — celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside brings POPS music to local communities.

Salute Series The Philly POPS Salute Series encourages recognition of service and commitment through an expanding set of events and activities — each transformative moments of celebration for our community. Salute performances recognize the service and sacrifice of those dedicated to a collective identity of American values and tradition.

POPS in Schools Launched in 2015, POPS in Schools is an EITC-certified program that supplements music education for 2,500 students in the School District of Philadelphia by embedding POPS Musicians and Teaching Artists in schools to cultivate the music leaders of tomorrow with mentorship from the music leaders of today. POPS in Schools provides programming for high school students through the All-City Jazz Festival, held each April during Jazz Appreciation Month and with weekly in-school activities at four elementary schools and one high school.

The Philly POPS performs as a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and at venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region. 6 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

guest artist

MANDY GONZALEZ Called by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the musical sensation Hamilton, “one of the greatest singers on earth,” Mandy Gonzalez has thrilled audiences on Broadway, lit up the screen on television, and started a social movement. Mandy currently stars in Hamilton as Angelica Schuyler and on the CBS hit, Madam Secretary. Onstage, the dynamic range of Mandy’s voice sets a new standard — one moment, she can be soft and sultry; the next moment, she can shake the rafters. Mandy is a Warner Music artist and recently released her debut album, FEARLESS, which debuted at #13 on the iTunes pop charts. Mandy is also known for originating the role of Nina Rosario in the Tony award-winning show In the Heights. Previously, she also starred as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked — blowing the roof off of New York’s Gershwin Theatre every night. Mandy is the proud founder of #FearlessSquad — a social media movement for inclusiveness and belonging. The movement connects millions of people around the world, encourages them to be their best selves, and helps them empower each other. Mandy is also an author — she recently published a widely-cited article in the Harvard Business Review on how to overcome one’s fear of public speaking and be more confident in communication and leadership. Mandy previously appeared with The Philly POPS for 2017’s 4th of July Party on The Parkway, where her version of “This Land is Your Land” shook the crowd.

CORPORATE SPOTLIGHT KeyBank

At KeyBank, helping clients and communities thrive means going beyond traditional banking activities so we can bring our values to life by fully participating in local communities and encouraging others to do the same. In the greater Philadelphia region, one of the ways we do this is through our support of the arts. By bringing life to the stories of everyday people, art is a powerful way to portray what’s real, what’s important, what’s uncomfortable and what we need to learn. And sometimes, as is the case with The Philly POPS Christmas concerts, art makes us feel joy. This is why KeyBank is a proud sponsor of the 2018 Philly POPS Christmas. KeyBank understands that our ability to make a difference directly

DECK THE HALLS Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa-la-la ,la-la-la, la-la-la. Troll the ancient Yuletide Carol Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. See the blazing Yule before us, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Strike the harp and join the chorus, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Follow me in merry measure, Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la. While I tell of Yuletide treasure, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.
