DAVID CHARLES ABELL Born in North Carolina, Principal Guest Conductor David Charles Abell grew up in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, attending Germantown Friends School through the sixth grade. A gifted musician from a young age, his study of trumpet, viola, piano, and composition eventually led to a concentration on conducting. He attended Yale University, the Juilliard School, and the Conservatoire Américain in France, where he studied under Nadia Boulanger. At age 13, David met Leonard Bernstein while singing in the world premiere of Bernstein’s Mass in Washington, D.C. Ten years later, David assisted his teacher John Mauceri in the tenth anniversary production of Mass, leading to a close association with Bernstein — as both a conducting student and as an editor of Bernstein’s music. David made his debut with The Philly POPS in 2013’s Christmas Spectacular, returning again in 2014 and 2015. He has since conducted Blockbuster Broadway in 2017, Lenny’s Revolution in 2018, Cole Porter’s Broadway in 2019, and will lead 2020’s Sondheim: A 90th Birthday Celebration. In addition to his work with The Philly POPS, David conducts concerts, opera, and theatre performances around the world. He has performed with such distinguished artists as Dame Judi Dench, Dame Emma Thompson, Heather Headley, Idina Menzel, Petula Clark, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, and Matthew Morrison. He has conducted many prominent orchestras, including the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Atlanta and Cincinnati Symphonies, and Boston Pops. David is widely known to TV audiences for the 10th and 25th anniversary Les Misérables concerts, both of which have become PBS fund-raising perennials. In the UK, he has performed many times on television, most notably as conductor of the immensely successful Sondheim 80th birthday Prom and as the conductor for four years of the Olivier Awards, the UK’s equivalent to the Tony Awards. Recently, he made his Zurich Opera debut with Sweeney Todd, starring Sir Bryn Terfel. David currently lives in London.

MANDY GONZALEZ Called by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the musical sensation Hamilton, “one of the greatest singers on earth,” Mandy Gonzalez has thrilled audiences on Broadway, lit up the screen on television, and started a social movement. Mandy currently stars as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton and on the CBS hit, Madam Secretary. On stage, the dynamic range of Mandy’s voice sets a new standard — one moment, she can be soft and sultry, the next moment, she can shake the rafters. Mandy is a Warner Music artist and recently released her debut album, “FEARLESS,” which debuted at #13 on the iTunes pop charts. Mandy is also known for originating the role of Nina Rosario in the Tony award-winning show, In the Heights. Mandy is also an author — she recently published a widely-cited article in the Harvard Business Review on how to overcome the fear of public speaking and be more confident in communication and leadership. Mandy has performed with The Philly POPS as the lead vocalist for A Philly POPS Christmas: Spectacular Sounds of the Season in 2018. She also sang for the POPS on July 4, 2017 where her version of “This Land is Your Land” shook the crowd.

SUBSCRIBER SPOTLIGHT Marc and Yvonne Lucca
Twenty years ago, Marc and Yvonne Lucca started attending Philly POPS Christmas concerts together as part of their holiday gift to each other. They moved away to California for nine years, but picked the tradition right back up when they returned home to Philadelphia. What started as an outing with just three couples in 2007 has ballooned into a group of more than 40 friends, family, and neighbors this year. Their contingent really grew when their son Juliano became a member of the Philadelphia Boys Choir (which performs in the show). “More people wanted to hear him sing,” Yvonne says. “Each year, our group grew and grew.” She makes sure to reserve seats close to the choirs so that she can see the boys singing up close. “We sit so close to the Gospel Choir that we know some of them and high five them every year!” Always held on the first Saturday matinée, the group’s day of fun starts with cocktails near the Kimmel Center, then box seats for the show, followed by dinner at Vietnam Café in University City where each person tells the group how they originally got invited, holiday stories, and things that happened to them during the year. Yvonne is especially excited about this year’s show with David Charles Abell conducting. “He’s my favorite,” she says. “This year, I told everyone David is back and that got even more people interested.” Marc, who is now a Board member of the POPS says: “It’s a great way to start the holidays!” Want to be our next Subscriber Spotlight? behind the scenes
SINGING SANTA For the last five years, The Philly POPS has been honored to have the one and only Santa Claus perform in our Christmas show. This fall, he took a break from making toys to reminisce about his time singing with the POPS. Though Santa has always enjoyed singing carols, he knew he had to get serious about his craft when the chance to audition for POPS Principal Guest Conductor David Charles Abell came up. He worked with a vocal coach and brought in the North Pole’s best piano player to prepare his audition song: “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” “I chewed my fingernails for a couple of months and then I heard from David and [POPS CEO] Frank Giordano that I got the gig!,” Santa recalls. In the years since, Santa has joined the POPS on stage to sing “Mele Kalikimaka,” “Silver Bells,” “The Wonderful World of Christmas,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” His tune this year is a surprise, but he says you can “expect it to swing!” “Of all the wonderful things that I get to do and see, singing with the POPS is the best gig in town!,” Santa says. “It’s a great a diversion from all the hubbub of Christmastime.” Though he takes a well-deserved vacation each the summer, Santa always makes a quick trip to Philadelphia for the annual Christmas in July event, when the POPS give new bicycles and helmets to children from military, police, and fire department families. The big question though is: Are the POPS musicians on the Nice list this year? “The POPS are on the Nice list, except for a couple of those horn players who sometimes make the Naughty list. And David Charles Abell is always on the nice list.” For Santa, “running out on stage and seeing the audience and the spotlight hitting you, it’s as much fun as being pulled by eight tiny reindeer!” 24 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

REMEMBERING JOSEPHINE ‘PINA’ TEMPLETON Co-Founder, Psalm 103 Foundation Psalm 103 supports POPS in Schools at the Isaac Sheppard Elementary School in Kensington and the Philadelphia Military Academy in North Philadelphia, both with multi-year commitments. Josephine Templeton, physician, and benefactor to The Philly POPS and dozens of other cultural and charitable organizations passed away on October 25 at her home in Bryn Mawr. “Pina” as she was known by her many friends, was born on the island of Capri, Italy and moved to the U.S. when she was nine. After attending Fordham University and earning her medical degree from the University of Rome, Pina came to Philadelphia for a residency in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology and critical care at CHOP where she ultimately spent 20 years as senior clinical anesthesiologist. Having started her career in the 1960s, she was one of only a handful of female pediatric anesthesiologists in the country and became a role model for other women in the field. Over the next 30 years she became a leading anesthesiologist, and teaching doctor at the University of Pennsylvania. She worked with her husband and fellow physician Jack at CHOP for 20 years. In 2007, she received the Robert M. Smith Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, her field’s top honor. Pina and her late husband Jack promoted patriotism, and in particular the support of the men and women of the armed forces through grants and contributions to many organizations. Pina served on the Museum of the American Revolution board and was an active leader and benefactor of the Union League Legacy Foundation. Her support of the POPS in Schools program found a perfect fit for these interests with her support of the Philadelphia Military Academy and the Salute Series.

JOY TO THE WORLD Joy to the World, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.
IT CAME UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, From heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing.
CHRISTMAS SING-ALONG
HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King: Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th’angelic hosts proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!” Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King.”
SILENT NIGHT Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.
DECK THE HALLS Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. ’Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. Troll the ancient Yule tide carol, Fa la la la la, la la la la.
OH, COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL Oh, come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant! Oh, come ye, oh come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold him, Born the King of angels; Oh, come, let us adore him; Oh, come, let us adore him; Oh, come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord. Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation; Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above! Glory to God, Glory in the highest; Oh, come, let us adore him; Oh, come, let us adore him; Oh, come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord.
