LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Chilly February begins with this lovely Leonard Bernstein birthday celebration from our newly appointed Principal Guest Conductor, David Charles Abell. It’s a particular benefit for the program that David had such a close and personal relationship with Bernstein. We’re always thrilled to welcome David back to Philadelphia. It’s quite delightful each time to see the special relationship that he’s put together with the Festival Chorus! The idea for a revue of Bernstein’s groundbreaking crossover from classical to popular music was initially suggested by our Chairman of the Board Emeritus, Sam Savitz. A thank you to him for his part in this citywide celebration. Remember to attend the Bernstein exhibition that opens on March 16 at the National Museum of American Jewish History! Don’t forget to celebrate Valentine’s Day with us—each year, we announce our upcoming season with all the warmth, hearts, sweet treats and flowers appropriate to the day. We’ve got so many great surprises this year, so watch for the details! Make your plans for Todd Ellison’s Best of Broadway show in March. He’s one of the Great White Way’s most prolific and honored Music Directors these days, fresh from last year’s Tony-nominated work on An American in Paris. He’s bringing some new names—three of Broadway’s most celebrated stars—to showcase everyone’s favorite tunes. POPS in Schools is off to a great start for the second half of the school year. All four of our elementary/middle school programs are off to a great start for their second semester of the year. We’re gearing up for our fourth All-City Jazz Festival partnered with the Kimmel Center on April 18. This is an all-day showcase for the School District of Philadelphia’s high school jazz bands. Both the University of the Arts’ Z Band, directed by POPS Principal Trumpet Matt Gallagher and the Temple University Jazz Orchestra, directed by Terell Stafford will participate in this all-day festival open to the public. Please stop by to hear the future of music in the City! See you at the POPS!

LENNY’S REVOLUTION
BERNSTEIN ON BROADWAY
A Centennial Celebration of Bernstein
By: Ivy Weingram
Leonard Bernstein is remembered as the first American-born conductor and composer to receive worldwide acclaim for his classical work. He effortlessly crossed over to popular music through his intuitive use of film, Broadway, radio, and television. He composed across all genres: classical, opera, ballet, Broadway and was nominated for an Academy Award for the Best Scoring of a Dramatic Picture for his work on 1955’s Best Picture, On the Waterfront. He is also remembered for his outspoken political views and his lifelong interest in philanthropy, particularly his work on the integration of music and education for all students of any age.
Those who watched Leonard Bernstein lead the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1950s and 60s remember him as a passionate, larger-than-life personality—a charismatic conductor, devoted educator, and skilled musician who popularized classical music in the concert hall and through the television screen. Less familiar is Leonard Bernstein the thoughtful composer and ambitious social actor, the second-generation American who leveraged his love of learning and teaching, public celebrity, and musical talent to inspire social change.
As the longtime Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein lived his life at the center of what was then the media capital of the world. He remains best known for West Side Story, a loose adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set in Upper Manhattan. Lin Manuel Miranda, the creator of today’s Broadway blockbuster Hamilton, is often referenced as a keeper of Bernstein’s popular music legacy. Miranda won his first Tony for In the Heights, set in a similar New York City neighborhood and builds similar messaging into his work. He crafted Spanish language lyrics for West Side Story’s 2009 Broadway revival. Bernstein completed his studies at Harvard in 1939 and came to Philadelphia, enrolling at the Curtis Institute of Music. While here, he studied conducting, piano, orchestration, counterpoint and score reading. He is said to have received the only “A” ever awarded by his conducting instructor, Fritz Reiner.
Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25, 1918 to Jewish immigrants Jennie and Samuel Bernstein, then living in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Samuel founded the Samuel Bernstein Hair Company and built a successful business as the New England franchisee of the Frederic’s Permanent Wave machine. Leonard began piano lessons at age 10 and studied at Boston Latin School, Harvard University, the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, and Philadelphia’s own Curtis Institute of Music. He graduated from Curtis in 1941, and within months led the Boston Pops in his first appearance with a professional orchestra. On November 14, 1943, Bernstein famously made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut, broadcast nationally on radio, when Maestro Bruno Walter fell ill. In January 1944 Bernstein premiered “Jeremiah,” the first of his three symphonies that included “Age of Anxiety” and “Kaddish.” He followed “Jeremiah” by composing numerous concert works (“Chichester Psalms,” MASS), theater works (On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide, A Quiet Place, songs and chorus for Peter Pan, West Side Story), film scores (On the Waterfront film score, among others), and ballet scores (Fancy Free, Dybbuk). Bernstein became Music Director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1958—the first American born-and-trained conductor to hold this position. His Young People’s Concerts made him the face of classical music and music education for a generation of Americans who still point to him as one of the earliest musical influences on their lives. Bernstein traveled the world as an internationally recognized conductor and taught at Tanglewood, Harvard, and Brandeis University. He helped found music festivals and academies in the US and abroad—nurturing young talent, popularizing classical music, and bringing young composers, conductors, and new music to a wide audience.
Ivy Weingram is Associate Curator at the National Museum of American Jewish History and curator of the Museum’s upcoming exhibition Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music (March 16 – September 2, 2018) NMAJH.org/Bernstein 6 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

Lenny’s Revolution with David Charles Abell | February 2018 | 9
MEMORIES OF LENNY By: Principal Guest Conductor David Charles Abell I first met Leonard Bernstein at age thirteen, when I was singing in the Boy Choir of his Mass, the piece which opened the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Not a mass in the liturgical sense, it is a theater piece which tells a story about 1970s society. The story is told in the form of a Catholic mass. A strange idea indeed — and conceived by a Jewish composer! — but it works brilliantly.
the art of conducting, the craft of composing, and introducing me to the great classical masterpieces that he knew inside and out. He was even responsible for my professional conducting debut at age twenty-three. A producer in Berlin wanted to present Mass and Bernstein said, “Let’s send David to conduct it.” Lenny trusted me to conduct his music! What a way to get started on my life’s path… Tonight, the Mass connection continues as I introduce you, our Philly POPS audience, to some of its treasures. We will also explore Lenny’s popular side: the Broadway shows On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide and, of course, West Side Story. You’ll get to experience his great sense of humor, his theatricality, his mastery of many different styles, his daring way of bringing modernity to musical theatre, his big heart — in short, everything that went into creating Lenny’s Revolution.
Let loose inside the Kennedy Center, we boys explored. We snuck up to the grid, far above the stage, and sought out every nook and cranny of the new building. It was an incredible adventure. The following year, I toured with Mass to New York’s Metropolitan Opera House and Philadelphia’s Academy of Music — more thrills for a star-struck kid. This made it all the more poignant when, last autumn, I made my Academy of Music conducting debut with Opera Philadelphia’s production of Mozart’s Magic Flute. At age thirteen, I had not yet made up my mind to pursue music professionally. Meeting Leonard Bernstein, American legend, sealed the deal. He was not only a great conductor, but also an amazing composer who had written a piece that brought together elements of rock, jazz, soul, Broadway, and classical music. I was hooked. After I graduated from Yale, my conducting teacher John Mauceri was asked to conduct the Tenth Anniversary production of Mass at… the Kennedy Center! John asked me to assist him on the production, so, once again, I was on that great stage, this time playing keyboard in Mass’s Blues Band. Later, I was asked to edit Bernstein’s music for publication and assist him on various other projects. Lenny was one of the most generous people you could ever meet. I was just a kid who had dreams of becoming a conductor, but he was happy to spend time with me, telling me about 10 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

DAVID CHARLES ABELL
MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI
David Charles Abell made his Philly POPS debut in 2013 with the Christmas Spectacular series and was delighted to be asked back to conduct it again in 2014 and 2015. Last season, he returned for Blockbuster Broadway, and was named Principal Guest Conductor of The Philly POPS shortly thereafter. David grew up in Philadelphia. He attended Germantown Friends School from kindergarten through sixth grade and sang in the choir of Grace Church in Mt. Airy. He later attended Yale University and the Juilliard School, and studied at the Conservatoire américain in France with legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. At age 12, he met Leonard Bernstein while singing in the world premiere of Mass at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Ten years later, he was asked to assist his teacher, John Mauceri, for the Tenth Anniversary production of Mass. This led to a close association with Bernstein, both as a conducting student and as an editor of Bernstein’s music during the last decade of the composer’s life. David’s face is widely known to American TV audiences from his conducting of the two Les Misérables Anniversary Concerts (10th and 25th), both of which have become PBS fundraising perennials. He regularly appears on radio and television in the UK, where he has lived since 1996. He has conducted five times at the BBC Proms, London’s annual music festival at the Royal Albert Hall, most notably for the immensely successful Sondheim 80th birthday celebration. Following his English National Opera debut with Sweeney Todd in 2015, he returned with Carousel to rave reviews last season. His passion and expertise in the pit has earned him a thriving US opera career. Last September, he made his Opera Philadelphia debut with The Magic Flute. He has conducted Kevin Puts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Silent Night to great acclaim at three U.S. companies. Later this season, he will be conducting Verdi’s Rigoletto in Kansas City and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at Hawaii Opera Theatre. His ever-increasing catalogue of recordings includes Something’s Gotta Give with baritone Simon Keenlyside, Forever with soprano Diana Damrau, excerpts from La bohème and Madama Butterfly with the Royal Philharmonic, Jonathan Dove’s community opera Tobias and the Angel, complete recordings of the musicals Miss Saigon and Man of La Mancha, and, exclusively for The Philly POPS, the 2015 Christmas Spectacular CD. 14 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting and that’s what I ended up doing with my career.” He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream – no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony – all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational , pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra – we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia – it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellent music and performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynona Judd, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography and travelling – especially to Italy.

“In addition to the fun I that I had with the children, I was able to improve my own teaching skills. It was rewarding to conduct the choir at the City Hall Tree Lighting Ceremony. They got to see their hard work pay off and had a wonderful time making music together!” – Katerina Lansang, Student Teaching Artist
School District of Philadelphia through the ten schools that participate in the All-City Jazz Festival and with weekly in-school activities at four underserved elementary schools.
“A new feature at McDaniel Elementary School this year includes developing audiences of the future with a series of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) assemblies to acquaint students with the sounds of The Philly POPS as well as making musical connections to STEM.” – Virginia Lam, Teaching Artist and Liaison Coordinator The newest POPS in Schools program at Bache-Martin Elementary School in Fairmount supports and enhances music education in collaboration with the School District of Philadelphia. POPS Guitarist and Teaching Artist, Sam Riessen, is supplementing a guitar program for students in grades 7 and 8. At our other schools, the month of December was filled with Winter Festivals. At Isaac Sheppard Elementary School, the student chorus performed “Believe” from The Polar Express and “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. GW Childs Elementary School’s auditorium was filled with the glorious sound of its chorus performing “His Eyes Is on the Sparrow,” conducted by a Temple University Music Education student, and Delaplaine McDaniel Elementary School students listened to a POPS saxophone quartet performing alongside Santa Claus. Rehearsals and lessons for all of our schools are now back in session for the 2018 Spring semester!
“The POPS is reaching the next generation of Philadelphia musicians and art lovers, while providing the school district with greatly needed resources.” -Philadelphia Mayor James F. Kenney 22 | Encore! | The Philly POPS
“When I retired from the School District of Philadelphia, I had a strong desire to still do some teaching and to mentor future music teachers. The Philly POPS made that possible! Music Education majors from Temple University and I are able to work in public schools, helping develop choirs and bringing music to our city’s kids.” – Diane Dannenfelser, Teaching Artist and Retired Director of Music at GAMP

PHILLY POPS AND MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI HAVE A GRINCHY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. The POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert presentations and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives.
