REVEREND LUCY PIERRE POPS Subscriber Reverend Lucy Pierre was the first black female minister ordained in United Methodist Church in Philadelphia in 1975. She’s also a writer – of both bible school curricula and song lyrics. Her song “Love Makes the World Go ‘Round” was copyrighted in 1980. “I’ve spent my whole life surrounded by music,” she says. The New Orleans native has sung in church choirs (including the Tindley Temple United Methodist Church‘s annual Messiah), did musicals in high school, and loved listening to classical music on a Victrola with her family. Pierre is currently celebrating 30 years as clinical staff chaplain at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center in West Philly – the first woman in that role, thanks to her pastor Dr. William J. Shaw of White Rock Baptist Church. “I’ve broken a lot of barriers,” she says. “Everywhere I go I’ve been the first!” The Olney resident found the POPS through a fellow VA chaplain. She started subscribing, donating, and attended a POPS Ball. “The POPS helps me wind down because I deal with death and sadness,” Pierre says. She attends the POPS on Friday nights and sits in the third tier with seatmates/friends Arlene and Edward Gavaghan. On the way home, she often gives her bus drivers a program book to share her love of the POPS with them. Favorite Shows: “I really love the Christmas show. Also, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.” As a Chaplain/Captain in the Civil Air Patrol, she especially enjoys the patriotic concerts on July 3 and Memorial Day too. Mardi Gras in Philly: In 1996, Pierre started a New Orleans tradition at the VA Hospital. The annual Mardi Gras party features live jazz, beads, gumbo, King Cake, and dancing. “The chaplains dress in costume and we push each other around in wheelchairs like parade floats.”

THAT PHIL COLLINS GROOVE An Interview with Stuart Chafetz and Brian Kushmaul Phil Collins and Genesis are pop music icons with a long list of hits and staying power. Here, two fellow percussionists – today’s guest conductor Stuart Chafetz and today’s guest drummer Brian Kushmaul who’ve performed together for 25 years at the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra – discuss the legacy of these rock legends. Why did you want to create today’s show? Stuart: I’ve been a Phil Collins and Genesis fan for 40 years now. Being a percussionist myself, I always loved Phil Collins’ groove and especially that Genesis and Phil Collins used two drum sets. There’s a rhythmic core that’s fundamental in his music that resonates with me. The Philly POPS is the perfect vehicle for this kind of music. It gives it another level of intensity that you don’t hear when it’s just blasting through a speaker. Brian: I grew up playing rock ‘n’ roll. I started drumming in garage bands and then got into classical music. Combining rock ‘n’ roll drums with an orchestra is perfect. What made Phil Collins an iconic drummer? Brian: He’s stuck around through lots of different musical styles. He started out as a jazz drummer. Growing up in England, he watched Led Zeppelin, The Who, the Rolling Stones… all of those great bands’ drummers became part of his drumming. After Genesis became big, the drum machine was invented and Phil Collins was one of the first to start using it on his recordings. Some of his music is pure groove and drums, some is jazz-oriented, and some of it layers in electronic drums. Stuart: He did several Motown tunes as well. There’s an underlying groove to everything that he made as an artist. Have you seen him live? Stuart: I saw Phil Collins and Genesis from the third row at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, it was magical when he used the Phenix Horns (the main horn section for Earth, Wind, & Fire) to add a punch to the music along with layers of coolness, excitement, and tightness.

14 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

Why do you like performing ‘80s music? Stuart: Eighties music is everywhere! In every restaurant, hotel lobby… it’s in people’s psyche because it’s so good. Playing it with a symphony orchestra adds a velvety cushion to these wonderful tunes. Brian: It’s fun. I have fun playing it, Stu has fun conducting it, and the audience has fun. What’s your favorite Phil Collins or Genesis song?

Stuart playing drums in the '80s

Stuart: I love “Sussudio.” The horns add so much energy. Our opener “Turn It on Again” is a beautiful song. “Hold on My Heart” is one of the most beautiful ballads ever.

And how can you not love “In the Air Tonight”? With that air drumming groove. Brian: I especially love “Take Me Home” and “I Don’t Care Anymore” because they’re built around these great drum parts. What’s something people might not know about Phil Collins? Brian: He’s written music for Disney and Broadway (for Tarzan). What should people expect at this concert? Stuart: It’s hit, hit, hit, hit, hit after hit. When you realize the huge catalog of songs he’s created, you’re blown away.
