FEATURING

Dear Friends and Treasured Members of our Service Community,

Feliz Navidad José Feliciano

On behalf of The Philly POPS family and our Board of Directors, welcome to Verizon Hall. Tonight marks the fifth annual Comcast NBCUniversal I’ll Be Home For Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders. This concert is a particularly special one for me — it is the final Salute Series performance of 2018, bringing to a close our series of concerts dedicated to those who choose a life of service.

Mary Did You Know? Mark Lowry / Buddy Green / R.C. Fleischer

We’d like to thank Governor Tom Wolf, the Honorary Chairman of this evening’s event, and we’d also like to recognize Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney for coming this evening. Thank you to Police Commissioner Ross, Fire Commissioner Thiel, and Joseph Brooks, President of Liberty USO of PA for their contributions to all our Salute Series events. Finally, we thank Comcast NBCUniversal, our Salute Series presenting sponsor. Salute Series events have become part of the fabric of Philadelphia’s culture — reaching over 200,000 people annually — and there is no better way for the POPS to honor our service members and first responders. Brigadier General (Ret.) Carol Eggert, a member of The Philly POPS Board of Directors and Senior Vice President, Military and Veteran Affairs at Comcast, has been instrumental in making tonight and every Salute Series event possible. On this momentous occasion, from the POPS family to yours, we wish you a wonderful holiday season!

To all of the service members and first responders in the audience: we offer our profound thanks for keeping our community, and our nation, safe and secure. Your commitment inspires all of us. In a Salute Series first, we will honor New Jersey Assemblyman and Navy SEAL Ryan Peters with the inaugural Salute Service Award. We also honor the sacrifice of fallen fireman Captain Matthew LeTourneau. Captain LeTourneau passed away in the line of duty in January of this year.

FIRE COMMISSIONER ADAM K. THIEL

CAPTAIN MATTHEW LETOURNEAU

Adam Thiel is the Fire Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia.

Captain Matthew LeTourneau, an 11-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department, died in the line of duty when part of a row house collapsed during a fire that he was fighting on January 6, 2018.

Commissioner Thiel is responsible for leading the Philadelphia Fire Department’s 2,800-plus uniformed and civilian members in every facet of protecting our nation’s 5th-largest city from fires and emergencies arising from all hazards. He previously served as a Deputy Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was the fire chief for the City of Alexandria, Virginia from 2007-2014 and chaired the Northern Virginia Emergency Response System (NVERS) Steering Committee. Commissioner Thiel’s 26 years of experience spans five states as a chief fire officer, incident commander, company officer, fire and emergency services instructor, hazardous materials team leader, paramedic, technical rescuer, structural/wildland firefighter, swiftwater rescuer, and rescue SCUBA diver. He has directly participated in planning, response, and recovery efforts for multiple Presidentially-declared disasters and National Special Security Events (NSSEs), including the 9/11 tragedy, hurricanes, tropical storms, floods, an earthquake, major blizzards, international sporting competitions, and political events.

Just two months prior, he attended last year’s I’ll be Home for Christmas concert with his niece Hailey, mother Janice, girlfriend Mary, brother-in-law John, nieces Sammi and Jackie, and friend Alex. Capt. LeTourneau’s sister-in-law Mary E. LeTourneau wrote to the POPS about the show:

letter of commendation for his service during the World Meeting of Families in 2015. He was working at Engine 45 in North Philadelphia at the time of his death. The Philly POPS is honored to welcome members of Capt. LeTourneau’s family and friends to tonight’s audience.

“My daughter was so happy to spend this time with him. It was one of her last outings with her uncle. When she came home, she was thrilled that she received a button from the show. I never really looked at the button until today. I was struck by the message: ‘I’ll be Home for Christmas.’ Though this was his last Christmas with his family, my daughter will forever have the memory of this concert with him as will the other family members that attended.” Capt. LeTourneau had previously served at Engine 43 in Center City and Engine 57 in West Philadelphia, and was promoted to lieutenant in 2015. THE SOLDIER’S NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (EXCERPT)

“They all enjoyed freedom, each month of the year, because of the soldiers, like the one lying here. I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and I started to cry. partner spotlight

PSALM 103 AND THE ESTATE OF JACK TEMPLETON Psalm 103 supports The Philly POPS mission through its Salute Series and POPS in Schools program at the Philadelphia Military Academy.

JOHN M. “JACK” TEMPLETON Physician, Philanthropist, Seeker, Patriot Jack Templeton led a life of charity. From his career as a leading pediatric surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania to his years of guiding the Templeton Foundation to engage the world in issues of liberty, free enterprise and the search for truth to his personal charity, both public and private, Jack lived a life rich in good works, always generous and ready to share. Jack had a deep sense of gratitude to those who served in defense of freedom. His vision of freedom was inspired by that of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He served as a physician in the U.S. Navy and was generous to many causes that support the military and first responders, and his love of his country was evidenced by his generosity of both his time and treasure to the many patriotic causes that he supported and was part of. Jack died in 2015, but his legacy continues.

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, “Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice; I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more, my life is my God, my Country, my Corps.”

DECK THE HALLS

O, COME ALL YE FAITHFUL

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa-la-la ,la-la-la, la-la-la. Troll the ancient Yuletide Carol Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. See the blazing Yule before us, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Strike the harp and join the chorus, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Follow me in merry measure, Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la. While I tell of Yuletide treasure, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.

O, come all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant. O, come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the king of Angels. O, come let us adore Him. O, come let us adore Him. O, come let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord.

SILENT NIGHT Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright. ‘Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild. Sleep in Heavenly peace, Sleep in Heavenly peace.

JINGLE BELLS Dashing through the snow In a one horse open sleigh O’er the fields we go Laughing all the way Bells on bobtail ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to laugh and sing A sleighing song tonight Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh
