POPS Rocks The ‘80s with Stuart Chafetz| February 2019 | 3
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Two short weeks ago, we hit the ground running in the second half of our 40th Anniversary Season with JAZZED!, a show honoring Philly’s rich tradition of jazz music. Our city’s pedigree of astounding and innovative jazz musicians is truly amazing. With the talents of the incredible Terell Stafford and the breathtaking vocals of Dee Dee Bridgewater, coupled with The Philly POPS BIG Band and its leader Matt Gallagher, the show reached yet another momentous high point for this already landmark season. Today, we pivot to another genre that made its mark on Philly: rock ‘n’ roll! From its rebellious beginnings, rock reached unprecedented popularity in the ‘80s — filling entire stadiums with fans. Philadelphia was host to the internationally televised Live Aid in 1985. Philly’s own band, The Hooters, kicked off that show. Across the world, artists like Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Blondie, and Huey Lewis and the News packed venues with their towering rock sounds. Outside of the concert halls and stadiums, people watched as “video killed the radio star” with the creation of MTV — featuring former WMMR DJ Mark Goodman at the reins as an MTV VJ. To get this “totally happen’en” performance underway, we’ve brought in our rock specialist, Stuart Chafetz. You may remember Stuart from The Music of Elton John in 2017, where his performance of Riffer Madness catapulted the biggest rock ‘n’ roll band in the city, The Philly POPS, onto the radio and into the hearts of our POPS Rocks fans. A drummer himself, Stuart has an impeccable sense of rhythm — making him the perfect DJ for this mixtape of ‘80s rock hits.

THE PHILLY POPS The Philly POPS, the largest standalone pops orchestra in the United States, delights audiences with the inspired performance of American popular music. The POPS celebrates this distinctive musical heritage through an expanding repertoire of innovative concert performances and a robust set of educational and engagement initiatives. Now in its 40th season, the official POPS orchestra of Pennsylvania serves a consistently growing audience of over 150,000 annually. Music Director Michael Krajewski and the 65-piece Philly POPS orchestra keeps listeners tapping their toes to an impressive repertoire of songs from American traditions of music up through today’s chart-toppers. The Philly POPS BIG Band, an 18-20 piece ensemble performing a rock and rhythm and blues repertoire, premiered in 2017 to enthusiastic response at the July 4 Welcome America Concert on the Parkway. Outside the concert hall, Salute Series performances — including POPS on Independence on July 3 and the I’ll Be Home for Christmas: A Salute to the Military and First Responders concert — celebrate the American tradition of service around important national holidays; POPS in Schools enhances music education for Philadelphia School District students; and POPS Outside brings POPS music to local communities.

THE HOOTERS After meeting as University of Pennsylvania students, Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian formed the band The Hooters in 1980 in Philadelphia. The Hooters became one of the iconic bands of the 1980s, opened the 1985 Live Aid show in Philly, and continues to perform for enthusiastic audiences in the U.S. and abroad. Their music will be featured in today’s concert.
As a songwriter, you wrote “Time After Time” with Cyndi Lauper which went to number one and earned you a Grammy nomination. How did that happen? Rick Chertoff was Cyndi’s producer and Eric and I became her band for her debut album “She’s So Unusual.” The album needed one more song, so Cyndi and I just sat at a piano. We’d never written a song together, but she had the title and I had a way to sing it. We had a feeling about “Time After Time” and Eric played guitar beautifully on it. It went to number one. It was a gift and it opened up doors to working with other artists.
Who else have you worked with? We’ve worked with some of our idols and influences, including Mick Jagger, The Band, The

How did you get interested in music?
Why did you make Philly your home?

It’s been a wonderful experience and Philly’s been a huge part of that.
He grew up in the Germantown area and was a physics major. We started to jam outside of the library on weekends.
So, how does a Biology major become a globally-known rock star? Right from the beginning, in 1980, we starting playing local clubs almost 4 or 5 nights a week. It’s always been a strong live band – there’s an incredible chemistry that happens on stage. After moving up and down the East Coast on our own, we opened for some big groups in the Philly area including The Who, Clash, and Santana. In the mid-‘80s, we did a lot of recording and touring around the country and audiences abroad love us now. The Philly crowds are tremendous though – we have die-hard fans and 3-hour concerts with old and new material. It feels like a homecoming. Shining a spotlight on creativity.
The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.
