SINATRA AND PHILLY We asked POPS fans for their favorite memories of Sinatra. Here are some of the highlights of what they sent us.

“When I was a child, my Dad introduced me to Friday with Frank with Sid Mark. Sid’s show is now Sunday with Sinatra and I still enjoy it!

—Gee Ireland “My Mom and Dad were in Vegas in the ‘60s. They saw Joey Bishop gambling and my Mom asked if she could meet Sinatra. It was around 5 a.m. and my Dad said, “please get Sinatra to meet my wife so I can get some sleep.” A few minutes later, Bishop comes back with Sinatra. Sinatra kisses my Mom on the cheek. My Dad thanked him. When my parents came back to their room, they called us. The phone rang and my Mom was screaming that Sinatra kissed her cheek. She swore she would never wash her face again.”

—Cheryl Cohen

“I’ll never forget when my brother took me to the Earle Theatre (in Philadelphia) to see Sinatra. I was 13. People were screaming and pulling their hair. They were going crazy when he walked on stage. That was 1948; I’ll never forget that day.”

—Joanna Pacini 6 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

“As a teenager I had an 8x10 photo of him in our living room. My Mom and Dad let me keep it there.”

—Maria Eleana Citino Dowd

“The first concert I ever went to was Sinatra at The Spectrum in 1968. I was 7 years old! I took this photo of Sinatra at The Spectrum around 1975 when the Flyers were in the playoffs and someone presented Sinatra with a Flyers jersey. He remarked that they’ll win because they have the right colors. Sinatra’s favorite color was orange.”

—Michael Nigro Sr.

music director

MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Philly POPS Music Director Michael Krajewski’s earliest memories of hearing symphonic music were summertime concerts in local parks in his hometown of Detroit. “My parents enjoyed music, but didn’t go to classical concerts,” Michael says. “My first tastes of hearing an orchestra live were in that informal setting and that’s what I ended up doing with my career.” 8 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

He knew he wanted a career in music and always harbored the idea of becoming a conductor in the back of his mind. “I decided to get serious about myself as a musician and see how far I could push myself,” he says. “It seemed like a pipe dream – no one around where I grew up even thinks about something like becoming an orchestra conductor, but I didn’t want to live the rest of my life wondering what would have happened if I tried.” Michael’s big break came when he was named Antal Dorati Fellowship Conductor of the Detroit Symphony in 1979 and gained experience conducting a big orchestra. He went on to become assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony, resident conductor of the Florida Symphony and music director of Modesto Symphony – all the while splitting his time between conducting classical, educational , pops and outdoor concerts, often before non-traditional audiences. He is now a full-time pops conductor and serves as principal pops conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and since 2013, as Music Director and Conductor of The Philly POPS®. Michael especially enjoys creating pops programs from scratch. “We’re playing music that wasn’t written for symphony orchestra – we create all new arrangements and match the right artists to the programs,” he says. “It’s really satisfying.” His favorite experiences include pairing music with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and a show that featured an on-stage speed painter. “I feel that The Philly POPS is the best pops orchestra in the country and the best at doing these kinds of concerts,” Michael says. “And I love Philadelphia – it has a wonderful history and tradition of excellent music and performing arts.” Michael has conducted throughout North America and around the globe, and has collaborated with a diverse group of internationally-renowned artists, including Art Garfunkel, Kenny Loggins, Ben Folds, Wynona Judd, Chicago, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Michael lives in Orlando, Florida with his wife Darcy. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, photography and travelling – especially to Italy.

“Many people are interested in a symphony orchestra, but don’t feel like classical music is for them. When we’re playing the music of Frank Sinatra, movie soundtracks, Broadway and Top 40, audiences get a kick out of hearing a full orchestra with highly trained musicians playing songs that they feel is their music.” - MICHAEL KRAJEWSKI Sinatra and Friends | April 2018 | 9

guest vocalist

MICHAEL ANDREW For two years, Michael Andrew was the headline singer and bandleader at the world famous Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center in New York City, where he entertained audiences nightly and hosted a live radio broadcast, Live from the Rainbow Room. He was the bandleader and singer at Merv Griffin’s “Coconut Club” in the Beverly Hilton in California. While on Larry King Live, Merv called Michael Andrew “one of the great singers of all time.” A frequent symphonic pops guest artist, Michael Andrew has appeared with orchestras in Akron, Albuquerque, Birmingham, Charlotte, Melbourne (Florida), Houston, Jacksonville, Long Beach, Missoula, Orlando, Pasadena, Philadelphia, Providence, Palm Beach, Palm Springs, San Antonio, Sarasota, and other cities across America. He wrote the musical comedy, Mickey Swingerhead & the Earthgirls, that was a hit with audiences and the press. The hit show led to the formation of his band, Swingerhead, which remains a favorite among audiences and has toured extensively throughout the country. Michael also formed the Atomic Big Band, an 18-piece band that has performed in Hollywood for the premier of the Warner Bros. movie, Poseidon, and his bands continue to play engagements from Presidential Inaugural Balls to high society fundraisers. On the other side of the curtain, as a composer, lyricist and book writer, he’s created shows paying tribute to the writers of the American Songbook including Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins. He composed / performed his music for motion pictures including Heartbreakers, Inglourious Basterds, Mad Hot Ballroom, Bobby Jones – Stroke of Genius, and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Recently, he produced music for Mitch Album’s new musical, Hockey, which debuted in Detroit. Michael Andrew starred in the world premiere of the new musical, The Nutty Professor, written by Marvin Hamlisch and Rupert Holmes and directed by Jerry Lewis. Time Magazine praised his “terrific lead performance” and Jerry Lewis called him “one of the best talents to come down the pike in 50 years.” 10 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT Sid Mark

Host, Sounds of Sinatra, Sunday with Sinatra, WPHT-AM For 61 years, Sid Mark has been a leading local and national authority on Philadelphia’s favorite musician: Frank Sinatra. It all began with an all-night radio show where Sid played jazz and Sinatra on WHAT-AM, which evolved into the first full-time jazz station in the country when Sid launched his “Mark of Jazz” program. In 1974, he was awarded Billboard Magazine’s “Program Director of the Year.” When WWDB-FM became the first talk FM station, Sid’s program Friday with Frank became its only music program and then he added the dynamic and beloved Sunday with Sinatra to the lineup. 12 | Encore! | The Philly POPS

In 1979, the Mutual Broadcasting Company invited Sid to host a three-hour New Year’s Eve program titled “It Was a Very Good Year” with Frank Sinatra as co-host. Sid drove to Atlantic City and presented the concept to Sinatra, who said, “Let’s do it.” The show aired on 350 stations and ultimately led to the formation of the nationally-syndicated Sounds of Sinatra which still airs today.

Frank and Sid

After 45 years at WWDB, another format change brought Sid to WPHT-AM, one of the country’s top radio stations. His highly-rated Sunday with Sinatra can be heard from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday on air and online. Sid’s career is one of both adaptability and constancy. He uses his turntables as an artist uses his oils — blending, refining, and creating from a blank palette, a vibrant and soulful portrait of Sinatra. His loyalty and devotion to Frank Sinatra produced a cherished friendship, and has cemented his role in music history. People have occasionally asked “What is so different about Sid’s shows?” The best answer came from Sinatra himself, who said: “Sid, your show has oregano.”

Shining a spotlight on creativity.

The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain, move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.
