Get UP CLOse and personal with the most popular figures in hollywood

READY TO SEE SOME STARS?

Every wonder what is would be like to be up close to Beyoncé? Sit back and relax with George Clooney? Stand right in from of Justin Timberlake? Sit down with Audrey Hepburn? Your can do all of this and see more with your favorite celebrities at the world renowned Madame Tussauds in Hollywood, California. I have never been to an attraction like this before in my life. So when we got our tickets and went up the elevator, I started to think about what I was about to expect. I was wondering if I was going to see all these statues standing against the wall just waiting for you to stare at them up and down. Boy was I wrong. As I stepped off the elevator…BOOM! A man with a flashing camera stood right in front of us as soon as we got off the elevator. I took a few steps back, and I startled. I realized he was a wax figure. Is this how a celebrity feel when a paparazzi surprise them?! As I entered the first room, perfectly titled the “A List Lounge” and “A List Party,” I didn’t know who was a visitor or who was a was figure. Once I started to look around, I noticed that these celebrities were all posed. You could sit on the couch next to Simon Cowell, strike a pose with Rihanna and lounge around with Natalie Portman. For all you Justin Bieber fans, you will be able to spot him in the “A List Lounge” too. The next room was called the “Spirit of Hollywood,” where the classics come alive, in wax formation of course. Everyone from Elvis Presley, Judy Garland and Alfred Hitchcock are presented in famous scenes from movies that they have been apart of. I traveled on over to the wild

wild west and found classic western traveler just waiting for to have their picture snapped. I walked on over to the “Pop Icon” room where I found Whitney Houston, Madonna and Justin Timberlake. With pop music playing in the background, someone can’t help but want to dance and sing along to some great pop songs. For all you sports lovers out there, don’t think Madame Tussauds forgot about you. The “Sports” area has the latest and greatest athletes. For the dad that loves golf, you can hit a couple golf balls with Tiger Woods. If you’re into David Beckham or Tony Hawk, they are there too. Tony Hawk’s figure is actually on a skateboard doing a trick. I ended my tour with the “Marvel Super Hero’s” arena and here I found Tony Stark from Iron Man, standing at the podium looking as if he was ready to give one of his infamous speeches. Iron Man and Captain American both stood in the room while they waited to save us from the next evil villain. Don’t forget to watch the 4D Marvel Super Hero’s movie. Let’s just say get ready for a few surprises. Other rooms included the “Crime”, “Making Movies”, “Modern Classics”, “Action Heroes” and “Behind the Scenes”. At Madame Tussauds, I was able to see all my favorite celebrities up close and to see them all in one place. It was so much fun to watch so many people taking pictures with their favorite celebrities as well. Come and visit Madame Tussauds in Hollywood, California. I promise you won't regret it, and you might get a little start struck.

Learn the secrets of the EAST AT

THE Bowers Museum

T

o most, visiting a museum is always an eye opening experience. You learn, read and see how people have lived all over the world. Right in Orange County’s backyard stands one of the most prestigious museums’ that Orange County has to offer. The Bowers Museum, located in Santa Ana, California, has been enriching lives through the world of art and culture for many years now. Founded in 1936 by the City of Santa Ana, the Bowers Museum is one of California's finest and Orange County's largest museums. In 1992, a new cultural center and Kidseum opened. To live up to its mission, the Bowers offers exhibitions, lectures, art classes, travel programs, children's art education programs, and other special community programs. Bowers Museum has held such exhibits as; “Beethoven: The Late Great”, “Faberge: Imperial Jeweler to the Tsars” and “Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor’, just to name a few. I had a chance to take a look around and look at some of the wonderful exhibits they are showing. “Heavenly Horses: Two Thousand Years of Chinese and Japanese Equine Art” was the first exhibit I walked into and was taken back by the beauty and at times fine detail to these horses made. According to Chinese and Japanese culture, the horse was embraced as companion and participant in leisure and recreational activities including polo, horse "dancing," and hunting. Horses also figure prominently in the mythology, philosophy, religion, and folklore of both China and Japan. Also on display was the “Spirits and Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands”, the first thing that took my breath away was a unique necklace …made of human

The exhibit also features 'the ninth wonder of the world'.

teeth. After gazing at this piece of tribal wear, I wondered around the hall. There I found, beautiful bags made of feathers, marvelous tribal arm bands made from shell and complicated yet distinct wood carvings of tribal men in a long boat. Where were they going? Who were they? We may never know, but these carvings tell stories through art of the Pacific Islands of our past. In October, Bowers Museum welcomed a new exhibit called “China’s Lost Civilization: The Mystery of Sanxingdui. This exhibit features treasures and riches from around the world and includes objects from the discovery termed "the ninth wonder of the world". It's known by many scholars as one of the greatest archaeological finds ever to be unearthed. Excavations at Sanxingdui reveal the remains of a refined culture that were advanced in their bronze making abilities. These cast bronzes were far larger and stranger in appearance than anything seen in another ancient world. The three largest masks are in the form of human heads with supernatural features such as large wing-like ears and much more. Other bronzes reveal traces of paint or are covered with gold. The Sanxingdui culture left no written record or human remains and appears to have existed for only about 350 years before it vanished. This exhibit is one on the biggest and most notable exhibits that the bowers museum will be able to present. If you are looking some adventure and seeing history, take a trip to the Bowers Museum. I promise you won’t regret your experience. //by Maegan Castro-Flores

Dining & Shopping Take a deep breath

No you’re not in heaven...it just may seem like it with all the delicious food and superb shopping. Dozens and dozens of amazing malls surround the freeways as you pass through Southern California, but don’t forget to pull off one of those exits to explore an unknown’s city’s hidden foodie restaurants and fun boutiques. One of our favorite cities in central Southern California is Anaheim. Not only does this city host one of the most famous amusement parks of all time, Disneyland, but it also hosts some of our favorite sports teams, shopping malls, and outstanding restaurants.

ANAHEIM WHITE HOUSE RESTAURANT

Gourmet Italian/Seafood Bistro | $$$ 887 S. Anaheim Blvd., Anaheim 714-772-138 anaheimwhitehouse.com Before even walking through the doors, arriving at the Anaheim White House Restaurant is already a special experience. The National Historical Landmark building is unlike any other in the area, with its welcoming patio and regal façade outlined with hundreds of twinkle lights shining in the evening sky. It’s the kind of place where everyone is treated like a special VIP guest, from the gracious host who greets you to the incredibly professional wait staff who cater to your every need, no matter how big or small. Upon being seated we had the honor of being visited by the owner Bruno Serato, who educated us on the history of the restaurant, its authentic Italian influences, such as the one-of-a-kind wall murals, and all of the important people who have graced its tables. Even more impressive is the charity work that Bruno does with the underprivileged children in the Anaheim area. Each night he delivers fresh pasta to 1,000 children who wouldn’t otherwise have food on their table, so every purchase made at this establishment helps keep this amazing program going. CNN, People Magazine, and the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric have all reported on this ongoing outreach of community support that continues to do such good for the children of Orange County. After this intellectual and spiritual education, we moved on to the culinary

schooling. We were treated to special appetizers ranging from a delicious and tender Carpaccio, to individualized sampler platters of their rich and flavorful pasta items. The wine selection is diverse and extensive, with enough selections to please even the pickiest of wine connoisseurs! The main course made for some tough choices, but everyone at our table was beyond pleased with their selections, which made for a lot of sharing and passing around of plates. The waiters are all well-informed, and were able to explain in detail how each dish is prepared and offered good suggestions to the indecisive ones in our group. The fresh local vegetable sides were a perfect companion to the meat and fresh seafood.

Thanks to over 30,000 voters, Anaheim White House Restaurant was named in the 2013 OC Hot List as the Best Fine Dining in Orange County! We didn’t think we’d have room for dessert, until we saw the menu and (of course) had to order one of everything. Everyone left satisfied, and already planning our next excursion at the White House Restaurant. //by Samantha Stuber placesmagazine.net

I got caught up in all the art shops, people and activity that surrounded me but I finally found my destination to Selanne Steak Tavern in Laguna Beach, California. Owned by hockey legend and 2007 Stanley Cup winner and star player for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Teemu Selanne converted long time Laguna Beach eatery French 75 into Selanne Steak Tavern. When I valet parked my car, I wasn’t sure how formal Selanne Steak Tavern was going to be; as I walked in I instantly adored the look of the place. The inside of the restaurant looked like a house you would see in the Hamptons. When I say house, I really mean house. This newly transformed restaurant was also a historic 1934 home. The inside features upstairs and downstairs dining, a warm tavern-style bar and beautiful outdoor dining. We checked in and immediately got seated upstairs. Selanne’s is upscale, but had a comfortable and inviting feeling. I didn’t feel like it was over the top formal and maybe that had to do with the beachcomber vibe that was felt throughout the restaurant. If you are looking for hockey and Ducks memorabilia to grace the walls

of Selanne, think Chef-driven again. The walls menus are made are washed in gray, with fresh, susare adorned with art tainable, ingreand black and white dients procured photographs. locally wherever We sat in front of possible. the upstairs wine cellar that holds 500 bottles. As our waiter noticed us admiring the “wall of wines” we got a lesson about Selanne’s extensive wine collection. Selanne’s has two other wine storage rooms and focus their wine list primarily on Napa cult wines and wines from vineyards throughout California. There approximately 25 reasonable wines and “The BlackList," which offers eight high-end, hardto-find wines from around the world. As we got settled and chatted over our drinks, our waiter came back to explain the menu to us. Our waiter, Jesse, knew everything there was to know about the menu. Everything on the menu appeared grain-feed, freerange, organic, or freshly caught that very day. Jesse made everything seem too appealing but didn’t rush us, and his timing was impeccable.

PLACES

We ordered our first course, Cream of Cauliflower and the Chef “Signature” Pacific Diver Scallops. We both immediately took a bite and melted every time we ate some more. We switched plates, only to experience new flavors and tastes that popped in our mouths. We finished the first course, only to be introduced next to palate cleanser held in a clear glass bowl with passion fruit sorbet immersed in champagne. The entrees came and we were blown away. The beef was so tender while the seafood was the freshest seafood I had ever tried. Yet again, we had to try each other’s meals and were taken back by the presentation and portion size. The vegetables’ were Al La Carte and there was enough for four people. The entrees did not disappoint. After dinner we had a cup of coffee and shared a dessert called “Chocolate Decadence” which was the conclusion of a fine meal. After all was said and done, we walked out of the restaurant into the warm balmy summer night. We found our way back to the valet and as I got into the car, I noticed something on my dashboard, a quick Thank-you note from Selanne Steak Tavern with two-chocolate mints. A final touch of class that Selanne Steak Tavern provided for a perfect ending to our night. //by Maegan Castro-Flores November 2014 |

P.F. CHANGS' CHINA BISTRO

Chinese-American Cusine | $$ 1145 Newport Center Dr., Newport Beach 1-866-PFCHANG | pfchangs.com We were thinking of someplace different to go for dinner. What sounded good was Chinese, so we decided to treat ourselves to P.F. Changs' in Newport Beach, California at Fashion Island. Neither of us had been to P.F. Changs' in a while so when we walked into the newly remolded P.F. Changs' we noticed the changes; there was a lighter and brighter feel to it. To our surprise the Newport Beach location is the only location to offer a full sushi bar along with its classic menu list. The restaurant has a new seating layout, modern and creative components to make the space brighter. New tables and chairs, wall coverings and operable windows that when opened, brings in that fresh ocean breeze. To say the least, the new P.F. Changs' in Newport Beach has become almost like a boutique-type style restaurant. After walking through the restaurant and marveled at all the changes, we were seated in front of two big windows. We opened them, and the breeze was wonderful. We decided to try one of their specialty cocktail called the Asian Pear Mojito. Let’s just say we ordered a second. Their customer service was without a doubt excellent service our waitress was attentive checking in to make sure we were doing well. She was personable. She chatted with us answered all our inquiries without hesitation, she knew her menu, which made the restaurant even more inviting. As we discussed the menu items the operational manager, Jim Rice, came over to talk with us about the complete renovation. He explained more about the layout and the “designated seating area." This seating area is an open seating area for people who don’t want to wait for a table, or who don’t want to sit at the bar.

The designated seating is open seating where you can order and dine with other diners. This restaurant is a well-planned establishment a lot of thought went into making this place a chic yet inviting place to have a fine meal As we relaxed from our day, our waitress brought out one of my favorite appetizers, the chicken lettuce wraps. Their signature appetizer is wok-seared to perfection chicken, mushrooms, green onions and water chestnuts over crispy rice sticks, with crisp lettuce cups. Simple yet amazing and probably most guest’s favorite item on the menu. We also had ordered a few different selections from the sushi bar, and diners can have an opportunity to sit at the bar and watch as your deliquesces are made for your consumption. The sushi bar includes sashimi, and maki rolls the Ahi Tartare with Avocado was fantastic. Something I recommend to anyone. When our meals came the out and the aroma was delicious, and the dishes were inviting At P.F. Changs', the food is served "Family Style." the dishes are bigger, and

YES, THIS IS Paradise

From Los Angeles to San Diego, Southern California contains some of the most famous beaches with year round warm weather. If you want to do more than just soak up the sun, look through this section for exciting and unique things to do around the beaches. Every beach city has it’s own culture; so don’t be shy to check them all out. If you’re looking for more recommendations, take a look at page 28 for some our favorite beaches. Now that we’ve taken care of where to go and what to do, all there is that is left to do is close your eyes, feel the sand beneath your feet, and don’t feel bad about ordering that extra drink!

Hop On, Hop Off Make a Beeline for Starline Tours Whether you’re a visitor looking to see the sights of Hollywood, or like me, a seasoned SoCal mom who’s always a bit too busy to find time to see the sights, Starline Tours is the way to go. Starline Tours offers many tours to choose from. I’ve got three daughters, and for my family’s adventure, we opted for the Hop-On, Hop-Off Double Decker Fun Tour of Hollywood on an open-air bus. This particular tour stops at 17 different locations where you can hop off at any time and see the sights, then catch the next bus 40 minutes later. We checked in at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and our day was already starting off with delight. The girls were mesmerized by all of the stars’ hand and footprints left in the cement. There seemed to be hundreds of them. We boarded our big red bus and headed to the top level. My kiddos were so excited to see Hollywood. Here’s just a taste of some of the awesome sights we experienced: - House of Blues Sunset Strip - Nickelodeon Studios - Millions of Milkshakes - LACMA - The Original Farmers Market - Pink’s - Paramount Studios - Pantages Theatre, Hollywood - Hollywood Walk of Fame - Madame Tussauds Hollywood - And so much more… The main Starline Tours terminal is located at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre at 6925 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood.
