ABOUT US Isn’t January a miserable month? (sorry to all those with birthdays!) It’s cold and dark and usually rainy. There’s a whole year until it’s Christmas again, and there’s nothing fun happening. Well, this year you can escape the winter blues at The Place with a whole season filled with great shows. To commiserate January being the post-festive period we’ve made all our events available with friends’ discounts. That means if you’ve become a Friend of The Place you can get discount on ticket prices for all 9 shows in January, as well as loads more through the rest of the season. For more info on joining see the details on page 5 of this brochure. Mental Health Programme 2018 sees the start of an ongoing strand of shows exploring Mental Health, and covering a wide variety of areas including depression, anxiety, grief, and PTSD. The programme as a whole is designed to help reduce the stigma that surrounds Mental Health and its impact on people’s day to day experiences. The Place are proud to provide a space for open and frank discussion and a variety of wraparound activities aimed at opening up the venue to people with lived experience of Mental Health, carers and members of the public. We have plans for a series of events including Q&A sessions, panel discussions, drop-in coffee mornings, etc. This season of work is presented in partnership with Mind BLMK, Bedfordshire and Luton NHS Mental Health services provided by ELFT, and other local organisations. Check out our website for further details of additional activities as they are confirmed.
LGBTQ+ Month Programme To celebrate February’s LGBTQ+ history month The Place present a short series of films and live events. This is part of our ongoing drive to increase representation and visibility for LGBTQ+ people at the venue, making Bedford and The Place safe environments for all LGBTQ+ people. We’re looking for more work and opportunities to develop this area over 2018, so if you have an idea, or know someone who may be interested in helping us, please get in contact with the team.

ABOUT US Fantastic For Families At The Place it’s really important to us that we make sure the venue is open and welcoming to as many people from our community as possible, as well instilling the magic of live theatre in the next generation of audiences, theatre-goers and hopefully theatre-makers! Programming work for children and families is a core part of our vision for the venue, as can be seen in over the spring season, with shows suitable for families and young people of all ages. We are very happy to display the Fantastic for Families accreditation at the venue as part of the Family Arts Standards: “All event organisers that are signed up to the Family Arts Standards, whether they’re a theatre, an artist, an orchestra or a dance company, will provide some activities that all family members can enjoy together. They are welcoming to families, with helpful staff, good facilities and considered pricing. They give clear information to help families decide what is or isn’t suitable for them and their children.” We think we fit that mould and we’re committed to doing even more to improve the experience for all going forwards. Look out for our new sensory tours for children with anxiety, autism or other complex needs, too.
DramasInPyjamas Part of our ‘Fantastic For Families’ drive is our new initiative ‘DramasInPyjamas’. Some of our best children’s shows have early evening performances, and it can be a worry sometimes if you know your children are going to have a late night...so, why not come to see a show in your pyjamas so all your children have to do when they get home is pop straight to bed? You’ll also be super-comfy, and it adds a bit of extra special sparkle to a theatre experience. Not only can you attend these shows in your pyjamas, but thanks to a very generous grant from Community Dental Services UK’s CDS Action we can provide all children attending with free toothbrushes and free toothpaste, and everything you need to clean your toothie-pegs at the theatre - making getting home and into bed even easier! We’re building on our reputation for being friendly and cosy, and inviting families to treat ‘Our Place as Your Place.’

1979. On a beach in Brazil, Josef Mengele, the notorious doctor of Auschwitz, takes his routine morning swim. At the age of twenty, Verity Taylor was charged by the police for damaging a chair by fire in the psychiatric hospital where she was a patient. Later she was committed to Broadmoor from where she may not be discharged or transferred elsewhere without permission of the Home Secretary. This disturbing play about mental health and difference is based on indepth interviews with the family of a real-life Verity. These interviews and access to Verity’s own writing took place while Verity remained locked up in Rampton Secure Hospital. Written by Olwen Wymark in 1977, Find Me was a searing indictment of the provision for juvenile mental health at that time and is often considered a historical drama. However, given the current difficulties being experienced by the carers of children and young people trying to access professional help, it feels an appropriate time to revisit this powerful piece of theatre.

Embarking on a national tour to demonstrate the importance of clowns in modern society, Familia De La Noche are coming to Bedford and they’re looking to recruit a whole squadron of new clowns from the smaller citizens as part of their mission to ‘Save the world from Seriousness’. A short course on how you can help to add humour and laughter to your lives and performance work covering: 1. Short history of clowning and why it’s important culturally in performance 2. Basic outline of clown styles and character 3. Finding your clown - physical characterisation 4. On the outskirts of a small Wiltshire town, in Rooster’s Wood, Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron and his motley band of misfits maintain a tenuous grasp on his caravan and the patch of land it sits on. This is the remarkable story of Jayaben Desai, the inspirational leader of the 1976-78 Grunwick Film Processing Factory Strike. Jayaben brought the issue of workplace exploitation and racism to the fore, challenged the perception of Asian women being inherently passive and docile, whilst having the measure of the most brutish and charmless of her managers, telling them: “What you are running here is not a factory, it is a zoo. But in a zoo there are many types of animals. Some are monkeys who dance on your fingertips, others are lions who can bite your head off. We are the lions, Mr. Manager!” This is social history presented in Townsend Productions’ imaginative, engaging style with songs and music of the 1970’s. Act One Theatre School has been running successfully at The Place since 2002. There are three groups every Saturday morning in term time for Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors. Act One Beginners for 5 to 8 year olds takes place on Tuesday afternoons. Every year Act One gives pupils the opportunity to take part in the Bedfordshire Festival of Music, Speech and Drama, perform in a Showcase and take part in a Senior production. There are Speech and Drama lessons available after school preparing pupils for LAMDA examinations and holiday courses open to all in the Easter and Summer school holidays.
