Welcome to The Pleasance Theatre Trust’s 40th Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme, where innovation, creativity and the Fringe spirit of discovery converge once again in one of the great cities on the world’s stage. As we celebrate four decades of theatrical excellence, we are thrilled to once again showcase such a diverse array of groundbreaking performances, with a particular focus on the development and support of new work.

As we embark on our 40th year at the Festival Fringe, we are profoundly grateful for the unwavering support of all the incredible artists and dedicated audiences who have been with us every step of the way. It is your talent, passion, and enthusiasm that have fuelled our journey and made the Pleasance the vibrant hub of creativity it is today.

It really wasn’t much of a surprise that the Collins Dictionary’s word of the year for 2022 was ‘permacrisis’, defined as ‘an extended period of instability and insecurity, especially one resulting from a series of catastrophic events’. For many, this word encapsulates this moment in history where we juggle multiple crises: a pandemic, political upheavals, wars, climate change, cost of living crisis etc.

Another ‘crisis’ is in the mental health arena: mental ill-health accounts for more than 20% of the UK’s increasing public health challenges - more than cancer and cardiovascular disease. However, while 1 in 4 people experience mental health issues each year, up to 75% receive no treatment at all. Shockingly, about 20% of young people with mental ill-health will wait more than six months for specialist care (imagine the outcry if a child with diabetes or a teen with a broken arm had to endure the same wait time).

As a mental health practitioner, I know how demand for mental health treatment exceeds supply. As children, teens and adults languish on waiting lists, their problems becoming worse and more

difficult (and costly) to treat. It is clear that we need to think outside the traditional treatment box and explore evidencebased alternatives; such evidence related to mental health gains can be found in the research literature around the arts.

But before we dive into the evidence, I want to ask you how your festival is going? You have immersed yourself in a world of art, music, drama and comedy; a world where your imagination is engaged, your feelings impacted. Perhaps you have also learnt something new? Maybe you have found solace in the stories of others - stories that resonate and reassure you. You will have laughed, maybe you’ve also cried. As Picasso wisely said: ‘Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life’, and scientific research supports his claim.

depression and in older adults, regular engagement in cultural activities halves the risk of developing depression, lowers the risk of developing dementia, increases wellbeing, and reduces loneliness.

Storytelling is where art and therapy combine”

Neuroesthetics, the study of the neurobiological basis of the arts, uses brain imaging, brain wave technology and biofeedback to investigate how we respond to the arts. Such research shows, for example, that visual art impacts directly on neural circuits enabling adaptive responses to stress by reducing levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and triggering a cognitive shift into a state of mind called ‘flow’, which, being neurochemically rewarding, induces feelings of wellbeing.

Developmental research has shown structural and neural differences in grey and white matter in children who engage in music compared with those who do not - with significant differences found in reading skills, sound-processing skills and speech. Studies have also shown that childhood engagement in arts activities can increase academic performance across the school years, while reducing behavioural problems and antisocial behaviours - with earlier engagement showing larger effects. Research also shows that the use of the performing arts in education enables greater retention of core subject information, due to greater motivation, engagement and focus.

From a mental health perspective the evidence is also clear. Research examples include evidence that arts activities such as singing can be used to treat depression, listening to music in pregnancy reduces the risk of developing postnatal

Storytelling is where art and therapy combine: we can explore our thoughts and feelings and gain insights via a narrative structure. The arts help us connect with others and with ourselves. As a therapist, I understand the power of storytelling for mental health. The stories we tell (e.g. in therapy) as well as the stories we hear (e.g. at the theatre) empower us to address challenges, process trauma and push through adversity, offering us new perspectives and comfort. Art can provide a safe outlet for expressing difficult emotions and processing challenging life events.

However, despite increasing evidence of the measurable benefits of the arts for mental health and in education, funding for the arts continues to be squeezed. Central government and local authority funding for the arts has collapsed, while Department of Education statistics show an up to 50% reduction in the arts curriculum. These cuts are made not only despite the evidence around mental health and educational gains, but also in the face of clear evidence that cuts to spending on cultural and environmental services are associated with worsening population mental health.

The arts can have powerful and lasting effects on mental health. Preventatively the arts can help to protect against a range of mental health conditions, reactively the arts can support recovery from mental ill-health. It’s a no-brainer that reinvesting in the arts, both in education and in the community, will contribute to improved public mental health, while saving money in the NHS and social care. It is the arts that will enable us to navigate the era of ‘permacrisis’.

The Pleasance has worked in partnership with Edinburgh’s International Conference Centre since 2016. We are delighted to be partnering with them again this summer.

For 40 years, our festival volunteer programme has been proudly at the heart of our organisation, giving people of all backgrounds and ambitions the opportunity to enhance their skills, grow confidence and become part of a community that puts people above all else.
