We asked a group of present Marist students, “What does the Blessed Mother Mary look like?” Our artist, Sr. Mary Southard, Br. Paul and I listened for almost an hour. Sr. Mary went home, drew sketches, made a clay model, shared with the students, and sculpted the beautiful final product. What we share on the front cover of the Point, Winter 2014, is the result of that conversation. Our Lady of the Way is the newest prayer space for Marist students, and is a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Ken Martin in honor of their son, Michael Martin, Marist graduate, Class of 1978. On behalf of the Marist Family, our deepest gratitude to the Martins for their love and gift for today’s Marist students. Although winter has now come to the space, so many of our students have taken advantage of the prayer bench as the Fall continued, to have conversations with our “good mother”, very much in the spirit that our Founder, St. Marcellin, and our early brothers did. Fr. Champagnat would always bring his cares and worries about the Brothers and our students to Mary. He believed any good that happened for us was a result of her care for us. All to Jesus through Mary was a motto he lived and prayed. Hopefully, in your days as part of the Marist family, among all the things you learned, you picked up that good habit. Do you still stop and offer a prayer, as you begin your daily activities, as you did here? When you’re in need, do you take the time to stop Our Lady, to ask her to hear your story or your need? Look at this image of Mary. You can see she’s welcoming, caring and energetic. She wants the best for her Marist Family and you. Don’t forget to ask her to ‘pray for us.’ As a result of Mary’s care for us, we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. This has been a banner year with celebrations remembering our past and planning for our future. Students lead the Marist Brothers in as the 50th Anniversary Liturgy begins.
Marist Celebrates 50 Years EXACTLY FIFTY YEARS to the day the Marist Brothers
first opened the school doors, the Marist community gathered to share a special liturgy at Red and White Stadium on Sept. 9. Archbishop Francis Cardinal George presided at the Mass and was escorted to the field by Marist President Br. Pat McNamara in Brother Pat’s trademark red and white golf cart. Concelebrating with Cardinal George were Bishop Raymond Goedert, 31 Marist Brothers from across the country, and over 15 priests and deacons from across the Chicagoland area. Many alumni from the first five classes (1967-71) joined in the celebration, along with the entire

student body and faculty on what proved to be a sunny and unseasonably hot morning. Deacon Andy Neu ‘78 read the Gospel, followed by the Cardinal’s homily, in which he congratulated Marist for a half century of making Jesus known and loved. Following the Mass, Br. Pat addressed the gathering, thanking students for their ability to cope with the excessively hot weather. He also challenged students to devote 50 hours of community service this year as part of the celebration. A post-liturgy social was held at Chateau BuSche’ immediately following.

2013 Dick Foy Open ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2013 the Marist
Alumni Office held the 24th Annual Dick Foy Open at Ridge Country Club in Chicago, Illinois. 120 golfers participated in this year’s event. It was a day that was one of the season’s most spectacular. Proceeds from the Dick Foy Open benefit the Marist Work – Study Program. To date there are 100 students who participate in a program allowing students to pay down their tuition through the performance of various tasks Results of the Dick Foy Open throughout the school. r. Brice Byczynski, fms, is a member of the first graduating class from Marist in 1967, and he says his time at Marist and with the Marist Brothers has been a gift. “It’s all a gift. My life has been full of talented and caring people, with whom I have had incredible opportunities to do worthwhile things, in various, beautiful parts of our country. It has moved me far beyond anything I could have planned or imagined at 17-18. Marist was a “wonderful part of my growing up,” Br. Brice said. He said the Brothers who ran Marist in the 60’s were “young, spirited, educated and inspiring” men who treated students like a person. “The Sisters I had at St. Nicholas of Tolentine taught me to read and write, and for that I am grateful. The Brothers though, taught me to think, dream and act.” As a member of Marist’s Christian Action Group, a prayerful service group, Br. Brice tutored, helped run retreats and canned food drives, and planned school prayer services. This exposure to service led him to be interested in the life of a Brother, and upon graduation, Brother went to live in the “House of Studies” – the Marist postulate – at 4821 S.Ellis in Chicago. While living at the Marist Postulate, Brother Brice earned an English degree with a minor in Theology from DePaul University in Chicago, in 1971. Afterward, his first teaching assignment took him to Massachusetts where he taught English and Religion at Central Catholic High School from 1971-74. His principal then encouraged him to earn a Master Degree in Religious Education, which he earned in 1975 from Boston College. He used that degree in Lawrence, and later, in South Dakota, when

7 he taught at the Red Cloud Indian School from 1974-77. From 1977-87, Br. Brice left the classroom, and worked first as a member of the pastoral team for three parishes in South Dakota, and next as a vocation minister in Eugene, Oregon. From 1988-92, Br. Brice taught English and Physical Education at a Marist-sponsored school for Oglala Sioux youth. From 1992-96, he taught full time again, first at St. Agnes High School in New York, and then back to Central Catholic High School in Massachusetts. When Br. Brice’s mom died of cancer in 1996, he moved back to Marist in Chicago, and worked in the bookstore for a year. His last five years in schools were at John A. Coleman Catholic High School in New York, where he worked in guidance and college counseling, as well as teaching Scripture classes. Since 2004, Brother has been active working in the archives for the Marist Brothers in New York. He is responsible for organizing, safe-
guarding and making accessible the heritage of the 127 year history of the Brothers in the U.S. Additionally, in 2010-2011, Br. Brice took 350 hours of course work to become a New York State credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselor. In the future, he hopes to complete the required test and internship hours to become state certified. After 45 years as a Marist Brother, Br. Brice is still learning to “do the next thing” that is in front of him, with all his heart. “I can’t say enough good about my Marist High School experience. Marist gave me an education that I’ve continued to grow into and be grateful for, all these years. The Brothers and other lay Marist educators were great role models then– actively interested in the students, challenging, spiritual and supportive people. Today the administration, faculty and staff at Marist continue to provide such a rich educational environment, as well as the opportunity to participate in an education that truly is, ‘For time and eternity.’”

Br. John Murray fms (‘67) Brother John Murray grew up on the South Side of Chicago and attended St. John Fisher Elementary School. He once told the story that after he graduated from St. John Fisher, he intended to go to Brother Rice High School, but when he and his father arrived to register, there were long lines. His father told him to get in the car so that they could check out the lines at the new high school that was opening on 115th Street, and so, he became a member of the first class admitted to Marist High School, thus graduating in that first class of 1967.

After graduating from Marist, Brother John joined the Marist Brothers who then had a House of Studies in Chicago. He attended DePaul University, and after one year, he entered the Marist Brothers’ Novitiate in Cold Spring-on-Hudson, New York. After taking first vows, he returned to DePaul to finish his degree, majoring in English.
When through one man a little more love and goodness, a little more light and truth come into the world, then that man’s life has had meaning.”

Brother John had a strong interest in theater. His first assignment was as an English teacher at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts. There he worked with students who loved his special way of making tedious work very clear. They also enjoyed working with him in building sets for the school plays.

Brother John also did graduate studies and Northeastern University in Boston, and received a Master of Education in Language Arts, and also received his MBA from the University of Notre Dame. After leaving Central Catholic, he was assigned to St. Agnes High School in New York City. There he was the Dean of Students. While he was at St. Agnes, the Brother who was Treasurer for the Marist Brothers’ Province died suddenly. Brother John was assigned to take up this work and functioned as Provincial Treasurer for the next 10 years. Brother John then worked in Chicago as a campus minister and later returned to teach Religion at Marist. He continued in this role until he developed cancer. Brother John died in Chicago on December 12, 2004.

Br. Rick Carey fms (‘76) Br. Rick, who grew up in Oak Lawn with two brothers and a sister, came to Marist first as a student, and next as someone who helped around the school, doing odd jobs such as mowing the lawn. In that way, he got to know the Marist brothers and was comfortable around school. Br. Rick graduated from Marist in 1976, and went on to college, but in his sophomore year, he was asked if he could possibly be interested in becoming a Marist Brother. He answered with a simple, “No, why would I want to do that?” Given his exposure to the Marist Brothers, however, and his appreciation for the values they had, he soon changed his mind about becoming a Brother.
After graduating from Bradley University in Peoria with a degree in business management and education, he earned a Master of Art in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University. He also earned another advance degree. This time he earned a Master of Art in Education/Administration and Supervision from Boston College. In 1980, Br. Rick taught at Central Catholic School in Massachusetts for two years, and then went on to a novitiate in Calumet Park for two years. In 1984, he took his vows and then taught at Marist High School in Eugene, Oregon for two years, and next taught at Mt. St. Michael, in New York. After that stint, he became principal at Central Catholic High School, and ››

stayed there for eight years, until he became the president of Marist High School in Chicago, where he served for nine years. From there we went to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he is the coordinator of special projects for student affairs. He set up methods and acted as a resource to assure that students from other countries, for example, are comfortable in an American school setting.
Life’s twists and turns brought him back to Central Catholic High School where he is now serving as President. “Over the course of 30 years, living as a Marist Brother allowed me to live out values I believe in – values reflected in the Marist community. I believe in family, community, and the idea of taking care of those who are the least favored. These are what matter and are important to me.”
Br. John Kachinsky fms (‘80) 10 Brother John Kachinsky, FMS, was born on Easter Sunday at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, Illinois. Brother John lived with his parents at 107th and Hamlin, in Chicago, until he joined the Marist Brothers in 1984. Brother John had two siblings, but tragically, they passed away when they were children. This event was certainly life altering, but Brother John feels the experience positively influences him today in his work as a school counselor. A 1980 graduate of Marist High School, Brother John went on to earn an undergraduate degree in Social Work from Loyola University of Chicago. After his 1984 graduation, he earned a Master of Social Work degree from Fordham University in New York, and earned a post graduate certificate in Child and Adolescent Therapy from Fordham, in 2005.

Today, Brother John works at Central Catholic High School, in Lawrence Massachusetts, where his primary ministry is counseling. In addition, he runs programs for the admissions office, does vocation promotion, and serves as the Religious Brother Representative on the Pastoral Council for the Archdiocese of Boston. Brother John also ministered at Marist High School, St. Agnes Boys High School in New York, Mount St. Michael Academy, also in New York, and at Marist Brothers’ International School in Japan. Brother John said his four years at Marist were transformative. “During those years, I came to know the Marist Brothers very well. I was impressed by their competence as educators, their passion for spreading the Gospel, their joie de vivre, and especially, their deep concern for each other, for the students entrusted to their care, and for their lay collaborators on the faculty.”

Brother John said his life as a Marist Brother is filled with many blessings, and is the most authentic way for him to follow in the footsteps of Christ. “I pray that the Spirit continues to lead more young men to the unique and rich vocation of Marist Brotherhood which was revealed to me some 37 years ago as a student at Marist.”

Marist Homecoming and Tailgate Party ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2013 The Marist Alumni Office hosted the annual Tailgate party. This event has become a Marist Family tradition enjoyed by all generations. Alumni, parents of alumni, friends of Marist, and future RedHawks feasted on the delicacies provided by our volunteer barbecue chefs and workstudy students. Adding to the festivities of the evening was the annual alumni soccer game. Coach Maxwell, Coach Barwacz, and Coach Hennessey proved to the youngsters they still have it. Well, most of the time, anyways. And speaking of still having it, Mr. Frank Manna commemorated 50 years of Marist Band by serving as the guest conductor for the halftime show where a contingent of 50 alumni band members performed “The Safety Dance.” The evening was highlighted by the Marist RedHawk victory over ESCC rival Carmel Catholic of Mundelein 35 – 25.

Marist/Notre Dame Tailgate Event ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2013

the Marist Development Office hosted the 5th Annual Marist – Notre Dame Tailgate Party. The event was part of the pre-game festivities leading up to the Notre Dame versus Oklahoma Game. Though the Sooners of Oklahoma got the better of the Fighting Irish, it was a magnificent day. Marist President, Brother Patrick McNamara fms, had the opportunity to meet with Marist and Notre Dame Alumni, who traveled from all parts of the country to attend the game and tailgate. All future Marist/ Notre Dame Tailgates will held in the parking lot of the Compton Ice Arena.

National Merit Semifinalist

arist High School recently announced seniors Jim Costin, Rachel Folga, and Liam Gibbs were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. Three other students were named National Merit Commended students. Jim Costin (Oak Lawn) has balanced participation in the school’s football program, along with membership in the Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS), National Honor Society (NHS), math team, and student ambassadors. He also serves as a peer leader, providing academic support to students in lower grade levels. Rachel Folga (Oak Forest) is a peer mediator, helping students resolve issues or disputes. She, too, is a member of SNHS and NHS, and serves as a student ambassador. Liam Gibbs (Evergreen Park) is a member of the school’s band, and is also a member of the math team, NHS, and SNHS. He also serves as a tutor for local grammar school students through Marist’s youth service group. All three have carried challenging course loads and have taken advantage of Marist’s many advanced placement courses, which provide the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. They are all considering highly-selective universities in the Midwest. They represent the highest scorers in each state based on results of the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). Approximately 16,000 high school seniors in the nation receive the distinction of semifinalist from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation located in Evanston, Illinois. That number is less than one percent of all students who take the PSAT. Semifinalists will be notified in February if they have advanced to the finalist level. At that time, they are able to compete for nearly 8,200 scholarships totaling $34 million. Brenna Donegan (Oak Lawn), Sandra Hansen (Homer Glen), and Anna Schieber (Orland Park) were named National Merit Commended Students. These students will be referred to colleges as outstanding participants in the PSAT.
MARIST FALL SPORTS SEASON has come to a

close and the RedHawks enjoyed considerable success. The RedHawks won four Regional titles and placed at or near the top of the ESCC standings in all sports. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY won their fourth consecutive IHSA Regional title and captured 2nd place in the ESCC. Mary Clare Leonard captured First Place in the Regional and also qualified for the State Tournament with her performance at the Hinsdale Sectional. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY won fifth place in the IHSA Regional and qualified for the IHSA Sectional. THE BOYS GOLF TEAM won back-to-back IHSA Regional titles and hosted the IHSA Sectional at Old Oak Country Club. THE GIRLS GOLF TEAM capped a record-setting season by placing second in the Regional and fourth in the ESCC. Ashley Kay qualified for the IHSA Championships and represented the Marist Golf Program well with a score of 86.. THE BOYS SOCCER TEAM enjoyed a great season with a second place finish in the ESCC. Team success continued as the 8th seeded RedHawks defeated #1 seed Lockport to win the IHSA Regional title. The season ended with a double overtime loss to Thornton in the Sectionals. Sean Maxwell was named Coach of the Year in the ESCC. The future looks bright as the JV team won conference with an undefeated 8-0 conference record. THE GIRLS SWIMMING TEAM competed in the GCAC and improved weekly. They competed in the Illinois State Tournament on November 16th in Lockport, where they broke many personal records. GIRLS TENNIS, under new Head Coach Brian Burns, earned seventh place in conference. The

T
he Marist Math Team has begun its journey towards the 2014 State Math Competition. After the team’s best finish ever (4th overall team) downstate in the 2013 Statewide Competition held at the University of Illinois this past May, the squad has already started practicing. The team works from early September through mid-May each school year. This year’s team opened its season on October 19th with an 11-school conference meet. The team was victorious in all stages of competition. The freshman and sophomore squads have also passed the first test in a series of four Mathfax tests. The top math students in the school are on the Marist Math team. This year’s roster consists of an all-time high of 65 students. 1960s Chuck Fitzpatrick ‘69 retired as an Adult Probation Officer for Cook County in January of 2004. In May of 2010 he said yes to a late call to the priesthood. He is now halfway through his seminary studies for the Diocese of Rockford (Illinois). Chuck is attending the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in St. Paul, Minnesota. David Knezz ‘70 received his B.A. in Education from National-Louis University in 1992 after enjoying a successful career as a trader on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange for 10 years. He studied theatre and improvisation at the Players Workshop of the Second City and Victory Gardens Theatre. He has also taught creative and performing art classes. 1990s Bill Maheras ‘90 and wife Joy opened Olivia’s Market in the heart of Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood. Like many ideas, the concept of Olivia’s Market was born out of necessity. After living briefly in New York City, the Maheras’ moved back to Chicago and fell in love with the Bucktown neighborhood. The variety of shops and restaurants in Bucktown allowed its residents to “live locally” with one exception – a grocery store.

Kyle and his wife Christina and their daughter Taylor reside in Downers Grove, Illinois. Glenn Schneider ‘03 achieved his undergrad and Master of Arts in Literature from UIC. He has worked for 2 years volunteering in Chicago’s inner city schools with the AmeriCorps program called City Year. He has done extensive travel to South America, throughout the U.S., and Canadian West Coast. Currently, he is working in Bogota, Columbia as an English teacher. Dominic Altobelli ‘05 graduated from the College of Business at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. Dominic lettered in baseball all 4 years and was also recognized as an Academic All-Big Ten Athlete. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2009. Dominic joined Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in 2012 after playing professional baseball for the Colorado Rockies organization. As an advisor at Merrill Lynch, he now focuses on helping to guide individuals and families through the financial planning process. In addition to a commitment to his clients and professional life, Dominic con-

Duke is an Industrial Services Company, specializing in Scrap Metal Recycling, Demolition, and Logistics. Maggie Mulchrone ‘07 ran track and cross country and also played basketball while at Marist. She attended the University of Illinois where she ran track and cross-country. She received her undergraduate and master degrees in Accountancy and then went on to
achieve her CPA. She currently works for PricewaterhouseCoopers public accounting firm where she performs consulting and auditing work for clients. She spends a lot of time traveling across the country to visit clients’ plant or retail locations to perform location-based audits or consulting projects. Her duties involve working on teams to complete a project. Her athletic team concept experience has proven invaluable in her work. Megan Heinlen ‘07 graduated with her BSN in Nursing from the University of Illinois in 2011. She worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago from August 2011 until October 2013. Megan left Northwestern to begin Travel Nursing as a NICU specialist. Megan is currently working under a 13-week contract in the NICU at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Downy, California. She is living in San Clemente, California with Kathleen Murphy ‘07, U of I ‘11 BSN Nurse who is also doing travel nursing. Megan hopes to continue her travels in Austin, TX; Charleston, SC; Nashville, TN; and possibly Boston and/ or Denver.

Shannon Ruzevich ‘08 and Tyler Newsome ‘07 were recently married. Tyler graduated from Lewis University and Shannon graduated from DePaul University. Shannon is currently a nanny and Tyler is working at Shepard High School as an aide in a special education classroom and is coaching baseball. He is also going back to school for a Master Degree in Special Education. Tyler and Shannon recently bought a new condo in Crestwood. Colin Monnier ‘08 University of Dayton redshirt senior linebacker Colin Monnier has been named a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame’s William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth. In addition, Colin is now a candidate for the 2013 NFF National Scholar- Athlete Awards presented by Fidelity Investments. The Campbell Trophy has been referred to as “The Academic Heisman.” The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country

Monnier, battled back from injuries that cost him the 2010 season, to eventually starting in every game since. He was named First Team AllPFL, First Team Academic All-PFL, team MVP, and the winner of the Chief Toscani Hitter Award in 2012. He was also presented with the Outstanding Leadership by a Male Student-Athlete Award at UD’s end-of-the-year all-sport banquet this past spring. A Pre-Med major, Monnier is a four-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll. He carries a 3.49 cumulative GPA. Erin Kelly ‘09 is currently working for the Boston Celtics as a Fan Relations Specialist. Her position entails working with season ticket holders throughout the season, planning events for them, and working to keep retention rates high. After Marist, Erin attended Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts where she received an athletic scholarship for
volleyball. Stonehill is a Division II school that competes in the Northeast 10 Conference. Besides playing volleyball at Marist, Erin also was a member of Coach Connolly’s Basketball team. If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy; she was a member of the Marist Drama and Choral Groups as well as an NHS and Spanish NHS inductee.
2010s Dan Piko ‘10, (Ashland University), and Vince Maida ‘10, (University of Indianapolis) were both named captains of their respective football teams for the 2013 season. They met mid-field as team captains in September at UI Key stadium. Lily Paterno ‘13 is attending Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. Lily was recently recognized by the Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women for an essay she submitted on “What it means to be a Catholic Women Today.” She received a $1,000.00 Scholarship for her efforts. Lily is studying music at Belmont University.

Development Office Update THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE has seen some personnel and program changes this summer. Maggie McEldowney ’07 made an internal move to become the Director of Student Activities at Marist. We wish Maggie all the best; our loss is the students’ gain. Amy Hughes is on board to run our Annual Fund efforts and the ongoing Marist Way project. The Parents Club will be running A Very Marist Christmas, bringing the event off-campus. By now you have read or heard that Marist is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Since 1963, over 20,000 students have walked our hallways. So many achievements, friends made, good memories – too many to even consider covering in a letter. But the constant in all of the generations is the mission of Saint Marcellin Champagnat and our devotion to Mary, our Good Mother. For years it was mostly Marist Brothers who carried the lantern of that mission but over time, more lay faculty were weaved into the fabric of a Marist education. For many years the sacrifices of the Marist Brothers impacted the tuition; giving anyone who attended an incredible, affordable education. But as the transition from religious to lay continued, the operational costs increased and the

you to all who have said yes to our call for assistance. As we celebrate our 50th year, one initiative in our annual fund drive is to focus on asking first-time donors to donate $50.00. The Annual Fund is an important component in our fundraising programs that provides budgetary income that is used for various programs throughout the building, ranging from technology and athletics to theater and club programs. The Development Office also continues to market The Marist Way.This walkway will be constructed to highlight the campus and will incorporate engraved bricks,pavers,and benches throughout the walkway. The first section of The Marist Way will begin at the entrance of the varisty baseball field.
