EDITOR’S NOTE DIGIMAG – 2ND EDITION
WELCOME TO
ON POINT As autumn unfolds and Sea Point sunsets become a kaleidoscope of colour, The Point Mall celebrates the essence of life. This includes looking good, feeling great and eating well, all of which you can take care of at The Point. In this edition, we look back in time at Sea Point’s colourful history by talking to some residents who have been around longer than most of the buildings. We take a look at the latest autumn beauty trends hot off the catwalk, making sure that when you step out, you do it in style.
While looking good is important, it’s even more important that you feel good. That’s why we investigate the importance of good body alignment with Biodynamics Institute and the benefits of Trace Therapy, a new alternative, non-invasive therapy that can treat a range of illnesses and injuries. We also look at the People of The Point, a photographic essay of the eclectic mix of visitors to Sea Point’s latest destination point, and we offer amazing gift ideas and promotions running just in time for Mother’s Day. Despite mammoth changes, Sea Point remains the Mother City’s most cosmopolitan suburb, and The Point Mall is fast becoming its heartbeat. A place where young and old, hippies
and hipsters, fitness fanatics, entrepreneurs, locals, and foreigners meet, eat, shop, do business and play. Take charge and celebrate your essence through living a balanced lifestyle that focusses on style, wellness, activity, taste, business and the essentials of life. See you at The Point.

“
Probably the most eccentric, eclectic mix all of South Africa, a kind of old Hillbrow
“Meet me at the Ritz Hotel bar at 5pm, it’s happy hour.”
I was lucky enough to talk to Sea Point freelance journalist, and resident cheerleader and voice, Herman Lategan. We met on the 21st floor of the famous Sea Point landmark, the Ritz, which seemed the perfect place for reminiscing. We chatted as the afternoon sun shone brightly over Cape Town’s most densely populated suburb. Paragliders decorating the sky, as Lategan shares some of his favourite memories from what he calls “probably the most eccentric, eclectic mix of people in all of South Africa, a kind of old Hillbrow by the sea.” 4
As a long-time resident myself, I have always been fascinated by Sea Point. It’s a cultural hot box brimming with a rich history and a cosmopolitan atmosphere that goes beyond any stereotyping. I went on a mission to find Sea Point’s essence, and I thought that those who have lived here the longest were the best to talk to. Herman has lived here most of his life and loves the characters and character of this suburb. He happily agreed to share his memories of local nostalgia, which are as colourful and vibrant as the Sea Point pool on a hot summer’s day. He tells me about one of his mother’s friends –‘Lady’ Peterson. “Of course he wasn’t a real lady, he was a big old queen who spoke with a frightfully posh accent, who in summer wore outrageous caftans, flower motifs, large hats, big sunglasses and sandals. He was ahead of the times, it was the seventies and he only dated across the colour bar, which was no problem for my mom and her circle of friends, but it did raise some eyebrows with the conservative locals.” AUTUMN 2015

“Lady Peterson once decided to end it all by walking into the cold water at Three Anchor Bay. He didn’t get far; no one knows if it was the cold that stopped him or Herman’s mother screaming, “Lady Peterson! Have you gone mad? Have you forgotten the new special at the Elizabeth (Hotel)? Two Martinis tonight for the price of one?” He turned around, ran towards her, gave her a hug and said: “Come darling, what are we waiting for? Let’s run.”
Herman Lategan at the Ritz Plaza restaurant in 1974 with his dad and stepmom.
There are many ‘Lady Petersons’ roaming Sea Point today, but residents are far more accepting. After all, it’s the diversity of people that make this place so special. A good example is Dr John Sonnenberg, who at 87 is the oldest practicing doctor in Sea Point, he also happened to have delivered Herman about half a century ago. Sonnenberg grew up in Green Point, and says, “Sea Point was always the superior suburb, Green Point was more for the working class, the poorer cousin.” His fondest memory as a kid was walking 5

never lived in the suburb as a youngster; he attended CBC School in Green Point, played rugby at Hamiltons and IFA soccer on the common. Most of his memories revolve around the many places he and his friends frequented in the 60s and 70s. “Hamiltons had no liquor license in those days; so we had to go elsewhere to drink. We went where the girls were.”
A favourite haunt of his was the Starlight Café, next to the Sea Point Baths, where there was regular live music, including a young Jonathan Butler, Richard John Smith, and the recently passed Zayne Adams.

across the Green Point Common with his granny to visit her friend in Mouille Point. “There were two dairies at the time, and we walked through herds of cows.” His father Fritz was a well-known Cape Town lawyer and one of the founders of Sonnenberg Hoffman and Galombik, today Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs, one of the largest law firms in the country. As a city councillor for the area and Mayor of Cape Town in 1951 & 1952, Fritz Sonnenberg even has a road named after him in Mouille Point. Dr Sonnenberg grew up at a time when “Beach Road was lined with grand mansions,” most of which had been converted to blocks of flats by the time he moved to Sea Point in 1970. Like most youngsters in those days he enjoyed the local swimming baths and the many cinemas.
“Cinemas were classier then,” says the Doctor, “cinema managers wore dress suits to evening performances.” While Sonnenberg was building up his Sea Point practice, Kevin Tucker was ‘jolling’ in and around Sea Point. Tucker 6
There were even gangs in those days. He remembers the Rocklands Boys, “more mischievous than malicious”, and the Penguin Café Crowd. Signal Hill was also a good hangout where he would occasionally visit one of the old war lookouts to sneak a smoke. Tucker also remembers the Kramat on Signal Hill playing host to a hunger strike by the late Anglican priest, Rev Bernie Wrankmore. His aim was to fast until the apartheid government investigated the death in detention of Muslim cleric and political activist, Imam Haron. Says Tucker, “We often went to visit Bernie, trying to convince him to at least drink something, but he stood fast, eventually ending his fast after 67 days for health reasons.”
Another character Tucker recalls, was a certain bartender named “Short Tot” Louis. Louis’ customers’ main gripe was obvious, but Louis’ gripe was that he couldn’t join the United Kingdom Bartenders Guild (UKBG), reserved for English bartenders, many of whom arrived on various Union Castle ships that used to visit the Cape. Not happy with his exclusion, he formed the WBG with a homemade flag that boasted WBG, (World Barmen League). He still kept pouring short though. A fun event from his youth was the annual race, when waiters from various establishments in Sea Point would start somewhere on Main Road, run with a beer to a certain point, pour the beer and run back. With the amount of restaurants in the suburb today, it might be time to bring this one back. Today, a walk along Main and Regent Roads reveals newer buildings, including The Point Mall, which was once the site of the Loreto Convent Girl’s School, but is now home to an assortment of people from all walks of life, and all corners of the globe. The suburb of Sea Point, perfectly positioned in the wind shadow of Table Mountain, with Signal Hill on its one side and the ocean on its other, continues to defy accurate description, but the memories from days gone by live on as we create new ones in the meantime. I still marvel at the compendium of characters in the streets; I love watching the parade of watercraft along the coastline, and regularly run Maskew’s Path, with its wonderful bird’s eye view of the colourful suburb. But, the final word goes to Herman, and his memory of how happy hour saved Lady Peterson. Bless happy hour and bless all the ‘crazy’ and eccentric people of Sea Point. AUTUMN 2015

CATWALK BEAUTY
Words by Megan Abels
Forget the prêt-à-porter garments and pay attention to the latest beauty trends on the runway.
With the wrap up of global
fashion weeks, the world is abuzz with hot new trends as seen on the runways in New York, London, Milan and Paris. Fashion and beauty trends are a constant rollercoaster. Some styles lose momentum quicker than you can say “haute couture” while others have real staying power. Get the latest scoop on Autumn 2015 beauty trends, from the colours of the moment to makeup, nails and hair; ladies and gents, get yourself to The Point Mall for your beauty essentials. 10
AUTUMN 2015
Hair all about it Dare to colour Fashion designers don’t just spin a Pantone pinwheel and randomly choose the ‘colours of the moment’. Colour specialists predict colour trends well in advance so designers have time to conceptualise and bring their ideas to life, readying them for the upcoming season. Since the early 1950’s, khaki has been a staple on the runway in the form of military jackets, trench coats and pants. We’re used to seeing olive green or khaki on the bodies of militants or historical war fighters going into battle. Now in 2015, there are splashes of khaki and olive shades on cardigans, shoes, denims, accessories, skirts and blouses. Pair this colour with nude, grey or black to create a simplistic, chic look. Marsala is a rich, deep purple hue that has been voted ‘The Colour of the Year’ for 2015. If you prefer wearing muted tones, spice up your look with a marsala accessory such as a beanie or scarf. Blush tones such as champagne, light beige, ivory and white is a trend that can be worn throughout the year. The Americans used to believe that wearing white in winter is a no-no, but it is safe to say that the “no white after Labour Day” rule has been kicked to the curb. Best of all, headto-toe white is a trend that has followed us since 2014 and is still guaranteed to make you look chic and well put together. Men - Bold blue is the colour of the season for men. Royal, cobalt and navy blues are favoured by the world’s greatest designers. Issey Miyake, Dior and Roberto Cavalli have clothed men in blue suits, jerseys and pants, paving the way for stylish men this coming autumn.
The cut of the moment is the long bob. Wavy or straight, this cut suits a variety of face shapes and body frames. Haircuts, however, are unique to each person and the focus has moved away from messy bed hair to styled tresses. The playful French braid was a summer trend that has continued to grace catwalks for the season of change. Autumn favours warmer hair colour variants such as chestnut brown and copper blonde. If you are still getting used to Ombré hair, quit while you’re ahead. The daring new trend you can pull off for this season is pixelating, which consists of various tones of the same colour dyed on your hair in forms of little blocks, emulating pixels on a digital screen. Men - Men’s hair has taken a step up from “messy, don’t care” hair to sleek and suave styles. The pompadour, characterised by short sides and a long top with a definitive side parting, has been one of the biggest game changers in male hair trends. The trend itself had a makeover and the new, updates do is similar but with longer sides and a choppier top. One thing is for sure, men should stay away from the man bun! #stoptheknot Yemaya hosts some of the best hairstylists in the business and they cater for men and women; visit their salon on the second floor for a hair experience like no other.
Put polish to nail Nail trends are always in limbo, and this autumn season calls for soft blush tones like nude, beige and soft pinks. A new trend on the rise is the feature nail, which stands out from the rest with glitter, nail art or just a bright colour, and can also be incorporated with softer colours. It is usually on the ring finger and adds instant appeal to any look. Sorbet has a great selection of trendy colours that are perfect for a feature nail that complements everyday wear or a special occasion. 11
AUTUMN 2015
Beauty wrap-up TOUCH-UP TIME Oxblood red and wine-stained hues are the popular colours on the lips of runway models and celebrities alike. It is always essential to balance your look by focussing on one aspect of your face. If you’re going bold with a red lip, keep it simple with your eyes. On the opposite end, darkly lined eyes with flushed cheeks and muted lips were equally as prevalent on the catwalks of the Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang shows.
The most important thing to remember about beauty trends is that they come and go; don’t get sucked into a trend that leaves you feeling uncomfortable and overwhelmed. You wear the trend, not the other way around. So celebrate your true self by taking these beauty trends and adapting them to suit you. Visit The Point Mall for all your beauty essentials and get professional advice about seasonal trends.

SHAPE Words by Paola Cardoso-Fraser
You drive your body harder than you drive your car and consistently expect peak performance from it. At some point, your body’s suspension needs to be realigned to reduce long-term damage – much like a car’s. We all know how essential movement is, right? Every day we need to be able to sit, stand, walk and run to live happy, functional lives. Yet we take the importance of mobility for granted because we’re too busy rushing through our jam-packed days. It’s only when someone breaks an arm or
twists an ankle and is left to struggle with everyday tasks that we realise how critical correct movement is. Few people are aware that bad body alignment can cause the same pain and loss in functionality as injuries, and even play a major role in causing them. From the passive beach stroller and couch potato to the highly active Comrades runner, anyone can have bad body alignment and suffer the effects. If you’re sitting up straight by now and wondering how to improve your posture and avoid ailments, Biodynamics Institute in The Point Mall can provide you with answers. They are committed to improving the overall wellness of people by using a holistic approach and attempting to realign the

body’s symmetry. Biodynamics Institute’s director, Carlo Longano is a fifth-generation shoemaker, Podiatrist, body-alignment extraordinaire and a firm believer in Newton’s law of gravitation. I was curious about this promise of realignment, so when Carlo offered to assess me, I was more than willing to jump at the opportunity. Keeping in mind that I was an extremely sporty individual in my heyday, and still spend a vast majority of time literally running after kids, I expected that my muscles and joints would stand up to being scrutinised by Carlo, but boy, was I wrong. He explained to me that someone’s fitness level doesn’t stem from their endurance capacity alone but that the alignment of bones and muscles play a big part. By putting more emphasis on the forces that impact the joints, as well as looking at why certain body parts experience more pain, they can suggest strength exercises, the correct fitness programme as well as the type of shoes that can help improve the body’s alignment. The series of biomechanical evaluations would indicate which muscles fatigue easily, at what point they strain, and why they can’t achieve their full potential. Like most others, I’ve paid minimal attention to the dynamics of my joints and muscles, blissfully unaware of its impact, until now. Stuart Baillie (the extremely helpful and professional in-house sports science fundi) placed small pink and white markers on key points down my spine, across my back, down my legs and on my Achilles tendon, which pointed out my structural foundation. I then took a leisurely stroll on the treadmill while a camera recorded my walking gait and Stuart analysed and explained why my stride was irregular. He pointed out that my hips roll, that my right leg is longer than my left and then advised me on the symptomatic outcome. The regular impact
on my shorter left leg has led to a stiff left hip, and, as a result, my right ankle compensates for my weaker left one and is overworked. After analysing my gait and establishing my body alignment, electrodes called electromyography (EMG) were attached first to my ankles, then to my shoulders and finally to the lumbar region of my back. These electrodes provided a virtual reading of my muscles at work, offering insights into which muscles were coping well, which ones were struggling and going into spasm at various weight-lifting stages and which ones were almost powerless. After the tests, Carlo and I sat down and he drew my digital skeleton based on the markers on my body. The sketch indicated that I have a slight curvature of the spine and that my walking stance interferes with my lower joints. The different tests revealed why I was struggling with muscle fatigue, joint pain and had less endurance than I used to. The need to realign my body to minimise further damage was significantly bigger than I expected.
“He explained to me that someone’s fitness level doesn’t stem from their endurance capacity alone but that the alignment of bones and muscles play a big part.”
The next step is to get me onto the programme that was custom designed to target my problems. Luckily, Biodynamics Institute is dedicated to getting you back on track to strengthen your muscles, realign your body and change your physical posture forever. After my assessments, my understanding of body mechanics completely changed and I’ve now made the commitment to follow up with my tailor-made programme and to run the Sanlam 10km Peace Run. This means I’ll be putting my correctly cladded right foot forward with my newfound zest for fitness.

TRACE THERAPY: THE NON-INVASIVE ANSWER TO PAIN RELIEF Words by Jolandi Morkel
When TRACE Therapy moved into their office on the 7th floor of The Point building, we were all curious about the stylishly decorated space and the therapists luring us in with the tranquillity and smell of vanilla incense.
A bit nervous with no idea what to expect, owner and therapist, Linda Bennett made me feel right at ease with her soft and friendly demeanour from the moment I walked in for my treatments. First up was my BEMER (Bio-Electro-Magnetic-EnergyRegulation) treatment. This machine is designed to create a pulsed magnetic field around the body, increasing the electromagnetic energy of all the cells, improving circulation and oxygenation of the tissues.
After turning to Google for answers (as one does these days), I learned that TRACE offers ‘non-invasive, drug free medical technology, effective in the treatment of a diverse range of illnesses, injuries and defects – both acute and chronic, using Scenar and Bemer machines, in conjunction with an innovative technique called TRACE’.
Linda explained that I wouldn’t feel any discomfort and that I could lie back and relax. She placed the small matt of the BEMER under my shoulder and left me to unwind for 20 minutes, comfortably dressed in a fleecy bathrobe and covered with blankets.
‘Luckily’ for me, I’ve been living with chronic pain in my shoulder from an old sports injury for more than 12 years, making me extra curious about any treatment that promises pain relief. I decided to test it out myself and popped over to book an appointment.
Completely at ease, I moved to the next room for my Scenar (Self-Controlled Energo Neuro Adaptive Regulator) treatment. Linda placed the Scenar device on specific trigger points down the back of my spine, sending electric impulses through my body that I experienced as a light tingle on the skin.
18
AUTUMN 2015
I definitely felt it prickling more intensely in my neck and back while the muscles went into slight spasms. Linda assured me this was perfectly normal since these were my injured areas.
and developed this innovative therapy after investigating many diverse healing treatments for her chronic back pain of 15 years.
This sophisticated electronic device uses biofeedback between the skin and the brain and gives the therapist different readings, indicating where the problem areas are throughout the body. The electric impulses then stimulate the nervous system to help the body heal itself in these damaged areas.
After the treatment, I was in a slight daze but luckily, it was time to head home for the weekend. Throughout the weekend, I could feel the treatment’s influence on my body making me slightly tired but according to Linda, meant that it was working. The fact that I slept like a baby during the nights was a welcome bonus.
After my Scenar treatment, I was wrapped up in a thick Energy Blanket that enhances the healing process and prevents electromagnetic emission from the body. All snuggled up, I was left to de-stress and take in the magnificent view of the ocean stretching out in front of me.
By Monday, I felt refreshed and my shoulder pain was less intense. Although the technology behind these treatments might be a bit complicated and hard to understand for us non-scientists, it’s definitely effective. The results speak for themselves with patients reporting on Asthma relief and other on Arthritic pain disappearing, to name a few. I’ve already booked my next appointment and recommended it to friends and family members suffering from pain and illness. If you’re looking for a solution for your ailments or just want to improve your health, pop up to the 7th Floor of The Point building or visit their website at www.tracetherapy.com.
Just when I thought I couldn’t be more relaxed, therapist Jess came in to administer TRACE by lightly pressing under the toes’ section of my feet. TRACE uses touch to exchange energy where the therapist feels different vibrations on certain areas of the feet. Linda herself is the founder of this treatment

AUTUMN TREATS Words by Megan Abels
Delight in some sweetness this season to make the upcoming cooler months more bearable..
With
a nip in the air, leaves on the ground and spectacular sunsets, autumn brings about feelings of reflection and change; we start layering our clothes and even start indulging in comfort food. Eating is one routine that changes with the seasons, and while you’ve spent all summer eating healthy fresh fruits, you can get away with indulging in some autumny delights for the next couple of months.
Swapping cocktails for coffees Cooler temperatures are on the horizon, and while a chilled cocktail never goes out of style, coffee and warmer drinks definitely make more appearances. Whether you need a wake-me-up coffee, a latté midday warmer or a goodnight hot chocolate kiss, there is a drink to suit every taste. The comfort you feel after one sip is like a bear hug from your favourite person, which will help ease the transition between summer and autumn. The Bootlegger Coffee Company has a variety of hot drinks to warm you up, why not try something out of the ordinary like a Honey Nut Latté or Red Cappuccino.
a lunchtime muffin or an after-supper cake. Block out the thought of those gremlin calories for a moment; imagine the bakery’s delicious smell, the golden-brown pastry, the soft texture on your lips and the sweet taste as it hits your tongue. Whether it’s an almond croissant, a chocolate tartlet or a slice of carrot cake, you can satisfy your craving for a tasty treat.
So long strawberry sorbet Desserts take on a whole new meaning in the cooler months. Icy sorbets and brain-freeze ice creams simply don’t make the cut. NV-80’s baked Cheese Cake with White Chocolate Ganache or their Crème Brulee and Hazelnut Shortbread are the order of the day. Both these desserts are guaranteed to delight your taste buds and make for a hearty and enjoyable evening. Soft bites and warm textures are easy on the palate and can be enjoyed with a dessert wine of choice or a hot drink, without taking away the distinctive flavours. Sweet tooth or not, whether you prefer a warm drink, a tasty treat or a delectable dessert to finish off a meal, you can satisfy your appetite at The Point Mall.
Fresh fruit vs flaky pastry Knead is known for its artisan breads and varied menu. For a quick snack on the run, they specialise in lip-smacking pastries, cakes and muffins. With such a wide variety of nibbles, you can pop in anytime of the day; enjoy a breakfast croissant, 21
