Pleased to make your acquaintance! Tell you about us, you ask? Ok. We are Byrdeen (pronounced Bird-een, just like the cute little chirpers that flutter outside your window). We hatched in 2022, ready for our new venture to take flight and see the world. Based in Orange County, California, we designed a glassware line that is fun and playful and elegant, with each piece inspired by real travel and nature experiences. Our glasses are made one by one of handblown crystal, uniquely crafted by skilled glassmakers, and nested in exquisite packaging. Perfect for any gifting occasion or a unique addition to any home, these beauties are a great reason to get together, laugh, gossip, reminisce, plan, toast, or whatever strikes your fancy. Cheers! costariqueÑa collection

Inspired by the vibrant color palette of Costa Rica’s nature (and maybe a few cocktails), this debut collection brings home some incredible hues. Each glass in this family is infused with an element of Costa Rican natural beauty.

The collection consists of five unique colorways:

Flora

Named after the red, pink, and orange hues of the native ginger flower; Rio

born from the exquisite blue color of the Rio Celeste river surrounded by lush green foliage (trust us, just Google it);

Cielo

created from the incredible purple and peach colors of the sky during sunset;

Quetzal

this byrd couldn’t be more breathtaking, so naturally this fabulous flyer’s pinks and greens have a place in this collection;

Cascada

yes we know, it’s just clear. But the beauty of Costa Rica’s crystal clear cascading waterfalls deserves some attention.

a little bit about handblown glass

We’re a little different than a lot of glassware products. Did you know that some companies will call their products handblown, yet only a piece of it, such as the base of the glass, is actually handblown, and the rest is made in a machine?  Tricky, tricky.  While we appreciate the beauty and perfection of machine made glass, we think the artistry of glassblowing is pretty neat, and love that our glasses are made completely by hand. Here’s how:

It all starts as a hot glob of crystal in a fiery furnace that looks like hot lava.  The glob is stuck on to the end of a glassblowing rod, and the glassblower blows air through the rod to make a glass bubble. The bubble is pressed into a mold that shapes the bowl of the glass. From here, the glassmaker works some magic, spinning and shaping the glass on the end of the rod with continuous movement. Another hot crystal glob is attached to the bowl, and pinched and stretched and pulled to make the stem. A third glob is pressed into a mold for the base, and connected onto the stem. A little fire is used to polish off the edges, and each glass is set to cool and cure. It’s pretty amazing to watch!

Given this process, every individual glass is unique, and may have very slight variations from one to the next. And let’s talk about bubbles! In handblown glass, bubbles are a natural and expected part of the process. We inspect each and every glass to make sure only the best of the best make it to you, but if you see a small bubble, it’s not a flaw. It’s part of our story, a stamp that this glass was made by hand with a lot of love and a lot of expertise. Hats off to the talented individuals who create our glasses!
