At the turn of the 20th century, William Leslie Miller and his wife Mary moved their family from Washington County, Florida to Grayton Beach where they made a home on what is now known as Western Lake. On October 10, 1910, W. Leslie Miller was granted a patent by President William H. Taft for homestead of 159.89 acres where he operated a cattle ranch, now comprised of Old Miller Place and a portion of Grayton Beach State Park. Just one year later,

the town’s postmaster, for whom Mary provided care, passed away, leaving the Miller’s his home on DeFuniak Street. In the 1920’s, the Murray family moved to Grayton Beach, combining two shacks to make their home just south from the Miller’s new beachside retreat. Through three generations, the two families were neighbors, up until the Murray’s sold to W. Leslie and Mary’s granddaughter, Shirley Sahlie, in December of 1989.
Not long after purchasing the Murray House, the Sahlie’s hired newly-established O.B. Laurent Construction to helm its renovation. The two-year long project begun in 1991 was among the home builder’s first, to be followed by the construction of the garage apartment in 1996. In the years that followed, the Sahlie’s would enclose the back porch where Shirley’s mother Willamina would sit on a wicker sofa and read regularly, and renovate the kitchen.
The original ice box is still a fixture in the home to this day. The pool was added in 2005, joined by the Hufham Farris-built pool house two years later. The Grayton Beach chapter in the Miller’s four-generation (and counting) story continues, and now your family has a rare opportunity to make itself a part of that story, and Grayton Beach history, through the purchase of the Murray House.

CANOE Enjoy a day on the water at Grayton Beach State Park. Explore the backwaters of Western Lake, a 100-acre coastal dune lake surrounded by the natural areas of the state park. Coastal Dune Lakes occur in only a few places around the world, so exploring this rare geological phenomenon is a treat.
